    Urine has 9.3 g of nitrogen per liter & 0.75 g of potassium per liter.
    You can't just continue to add urine to your compost pile as it will be WAY too high in nitrogen by spring.
    A good rule of thumb is that 3 fluid oz. of urine per square foot will increase soil N fertiity 40 ppm (for 4 to 6 weeks). FYI... An ideal vegetable garden has between 20 to 50 ppm of N available for plants. Plants such as legumes (beans, peas, etc. need only about 20 ppm of N. Corn requires 60 ppm of N. Potatoes require 105 ppm (and 100 ppm K). IMPORTANT: If you increase the soil fertility (i.e. N ppm) above a required amount for a plant, the plant will grow very fast & be lusciously green, but it very likely will produce low OR NO produce. In other words, you don't want to plant tomatoes in soil that has 105 ppm of N -- it wouldn't likely produce desireable results.
    The take away is---don't over do it peeman! :)

    In the area that I was raised nearly everyone had a septic system which consisted of one or more 500 gal holding tanks and a subsurface lateral distribution field. In a sense we did what this guy did for many years. Although we could not pour directly onto haybails we could instead plant fruit trees or gardens over the lateral field. We planted a dwarf pear tree on the edge of the field and got BUSHELS for fresh juicy pears every year. One year the fruit was so heavy it broke some of the tree limbs. Also the tomatoes we planted were very prolific. Note well that we refrained from pour any toxic household chemicals down our drains that might have harmed the septic system or our plants. Even today I have a septic lateral field under my front yard and I never fertilize.

    We collected ours and used it to compost down a huge pile of wood chips we were given, which it did in three months. We did this daily, before it started to smell. We made a square of wood chips then covered it in a layer of sand and made 4 evenly spaced holes in the top and poured in the urine in to each hole. We also added washing machine water to the pile via one of the holes and in less then three months we had well rotted compost. We never turned the pile or any of that sort of thing. We also use a dilute solution on garden beds that are "resting" after organic matter has been added prior to the seedlings being planted in or on any plant/s that does not want to thrive or needs a bit of a boost. You can see the results and the best part it is natural and free.

    @PRLIBRENOWMAGNUS: Thanks for your insights. I don't add urine directly to seeds or plants (but some other gardeners do, in a very diluted form)... I only add it to compost (or straw bales that I am composting), typically months before I am planting, so I don't really worry about killing the seeds or plants.

Where I noticed the squirrels were having a field day in the loose soil before, since I started adding urine, I haven't seen any digging - and the beds are raked completely smooth, so I would notice any digging. Urinate into a bucket (with a lid) of char as start to making biochar. The carbon will absorb the urine and keep it from smelling (similar to sawdust) if kept in bathroom. Then when full, store outside and gradually add/mix the char into the compost pile or bin to help keep nitrogen balanced at reasonable levels.

    yup your right loll !!!Human urine fertilizer. This is a kind of fertilizer that is best for any kind of plant but is most tested in cases of tomatoes. The human urine contains nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium that are all enriching nutrients for the plants. Tomatoes fertilized by human urine are found to contain more protein and beta carotene. The same has been observed in cucumbers, maize, and barley. This can be prepared by combining human urine and wood ash.

    NITROGEN in normal human URINE: "Normal values range from 12 to 20 grams of Nitrogen per 24 hours."
    Thus, let's say urine's Nitrogen is 15 grams/day x 365 days/year = 5,475 grams/year = 12 pounds/year.
    That's GOT to help the compost. (especially if you have a mostly carbon-based compost like leaves or straw bales).

  • @OrganicGarden123
    @OrganicGarden123  11 років тому +10

    My straw bales on the front lawn are in full view of my neighbors, street traffic, etc., so I don't whip out my penis on my front lawn to pee there. Also, I would be going out there many times per day. It is MUCH easier to pee in a jug inside, and then make the trip out there once or twice a week. Very easy.

    I started doing this one month ago because the wood chips were not breaking down or warming up enough. The piles have shrunk by 33% in that amount of time. The urine can trickle down 3-6 feet with no problem and I do not have to turn the pile. It was enough work moving 20 yds of oak wood chips/ with green leaves from the front yard to the back yard. I will likely get another load of wood chips from my local tree guy. Thanks.

    Great question.... I don't know. I did some calculations once based on electrolytes values published for normal human urine, but I didn't know how that compares with soil values. Maybe there's lots of great micronutrients in urine, but maybe the salts build up over time. Using piss will not grow them better unless you water well first (80% of water used with Miracle Grow) and then apply the piss and lightly water again (10% of full water used with MG).
    You have to use the same amount of water to make it a fair test. Deduct the water for equal amounts of urine applied.
    Instead of doing this, I make compost pits throughout my gardens. It's where I dispose of my food scraps, my collected piss, and add dirt I dug out of the pit. These are layered and work great. Easiest way to compost in my opinion.
    I make these compost pits upon gardens I buried trees/limbs under.
    I have a family of 5. We live on a secret Colorado ranch and have a blast with outdoor chores.
    I've been measuring our recycle waste, paper/wood/textile waste, and unusual rubbish. I have determined by volume (using 42 gallon black garbage bags) that 70% is recyclable, more than 25% is compostable/fuel for heat, and less than 5% is rubbish (however I burn these mixed into my wood fuel burns also).
    Human kind with its pride and greed is its own worst enemy. Living like Yeshua is our only hope to prolong our self-inflicted, self-destruction. It's coming and we can either slow its arrival or help it arrive more quickly.
    The choice is each of ours to discuss and make.

    Thanks for the tip. Are you saying to let the urine "set" in the jug for weeks before dumping the jugful or urine on the compost? Or to let it "set" for weeks IN the compost before using the compost elsewhere?

  • @OrganicGarden123
    @OrganicGarden123  13 років тому

    @yes350yes There are LOTS of chemicals in human urine. Per NASA, the main things are (in order): Urea, Chloride, Sodium, Potassium, Creatinine, Sulfur - Inorganic, Hippuric Acid, Phosphorus -Total, Citric Acid, Glucuronic Acid, Ammonia, Uric Acid, Uropepsin (as Tyrosine), Bicarbonate, Creatine, Sulfur- Organic, Glycine, Phmolr, Lactic Acid, etc

    If I kept a few weeks of urine around before dumping it on my compost... I would have many gallons of urine sitting around, raising my concerns that it would start to leach the plastic jug, or lose Nitrogen to air (ammonia gas), or, most likely, my wife would make me sleep in the shed. :-)

    @CairnsFoodGarden: if you look in "ALL comments" for this video, there are some math calculations about the amount of Nitrogen, Sodium, etc., in urine (i.e., what you are adding to compost via your pee), but I don't know any other good links about this. Someone should do a mini-paper on this topic! Any graduate students out there?

    There are a lot of salts in urine which can be bad for many types of plants. You might be increasing the salinity of your compost as well as adding nitrogen. I generally dilute my urine, 8:1 beforehand.

    • @danieljordan4320
      @danieljordan4320 5 років тому +3

      Fan Stanner some of those salts are potassium, phosphate, and nitrogen salts, not just sodium. Diluting doesn’t take away the ‘salts’. They are all still there when the water evaporates

  • @OrganicGarden123

    personally I don't add urine directly to the plants, to the soil the plants are growing in, or to compost tea. I add urine to compost, and it is probably a year later by the time I use that compost. But I don't doubt that other systems could potentially be as good or better than mine

  • @OrganicGarden123
    @OrganicGarden123  11 років тому +2

    Surprisingly, it does not stick. Do you compost? Those who do not compost would think that rotting kitchen scraps would make compost stinky, but it does not. Same for pee in compost.

  • @bosatsu76
    @bosatsu76 11 років тому +1

    Urine does not need to be composted or aged, or anything like that.. The breakdown of Urea is a bacteriological process... One bacteria takes off a single hydrogen atom, leaving ammonia... Another bacterium takes over and takes another hydrogen atom, and then another until you have something the plant can absorb.. All those bacteria exist in the ground and atmosphere. The moment you expose urine to the natural world, this process begins naturally. They do suggest dilution of 10 to 1 with water.

Seems like you are working against yourself.

  • @OrganicGarden123
    @OrganicGarden123  12 років тому

    actually, normal urine does have a yellow tinge. If it is totally clear like water, you're actually overhydrated. Pee into a 1-gallon jug, an opaque one, and see what it looks like. It will look WAY darker than your single stream going through the air on the way to the toilet, and WAY darker than it looks when diluted by a bowl of toilet water. (Then pour the jug on your compost and you are started in the right direction!)

    @timwagoner1 Unlike poop/stool/feces, our urine is usually sterile (no bacteria). Most males like myself will go our entire lives without ever getting a urinary tract infection (UTI), and women will be UTI-free the vast majority of their lives, so it should be perfectly fine.

    People are always saying that in order for composting to work, you have to keep your liquid separate from your solid, thus the design of composting toilets that divert the urine into another receptacle. But then they never explain the specifics of what to do with it. Why is it important to keep them separate if you’re just going to pour it back in later?

    Human urine fertilizer.

    @paromipatri Before I started, my main concern was whether the urine would smell, either in my bathroom or in the compost. But the good news is that the bathroom doesn't smell (I keep a cap/lid on the urine jug) and on the compost it soaks right in and I get no odd smell at all. I empty a gallon or two onto the compost a few times per week (mostly depends on when the jugs get full.... week's when I am away a lot for long hours at work, then I'm peeing less at home).

    Sewage treatment doesn't need to use LOTS of chemicals. Clorine as a final treatment is all that is needed for treating the liquid stream and polymer to release excess water from the solids stream. I wouldn't consider that to be lots of chemicals. Also, some Sewage Treatment plants create a "Class A" biosolids which can be used to grow vegetables for your garden. It's an excellent product!!

    @MrFlatline5 Yes, you may be right.... I could use to drink more fluids. BUT.... there is an optical illusion whereby when you put any urine (even dilute, watery urine) into a gallon-jug, which is also an opaque container, the urine looks MUCH darker than it would look if you pee'd it into a toilet bowel full of water. But I'll still agree with your advice to drink lots of water/fluid each day. Happy Gardening. Peace.

    • @Al-hf5ey

      Ammonia is a nitrogen containing molecule and plants love it. Google the Nitrogen cycle; "Plants must use nitrogen in its fixed form, such as ammonia, urea, or the nitrate ion."

    • @CountToBen

    • @Al-hf5ey
      @Al-hf5ey 10 років тому +2

      CountToBen Upon some research, urea is actually not a bioavailable form of nitrogen for plants it needs to be broken down further. The good news is that bacteria convert it to bioavailable forms quickly and easily. Time really shouldn't matter much, if you dilute urine to recommended levels you really cant go wrong.
