Wow!! I had this bike in a brown/gold paint scheme, but it's the same bike. First one I ever bought, and I bought it my senior year in college. Rode myself and my girlfriend all over the North Carolina mountains. She later became my wife. Thank you for the great memories. I had totally forgotten the particulars of this bike. Wish I still had one. Thanks again.
Sweet bike! I just got another CM400(T). Years ago, I got a CM400(E), and restored it for my son. He recently moved out-of-state, and couldn’t take the bike with him, so it’s back in my possession. As luck would have it, literally days after I got that bike, another CM400(T) appeared just down the road, at the home of a guy who builds choppers as a hobby. He planned on scrapping the Honda, as he got it as part of a “package deal” with another bike that he wanted. I saw the Honda sitting outside, and figured I could use a few parts from it, so I bought it. Upon getting it home, closer inspection showed that the bike wasn’t really as bad as it looked, so I’m currently restoring my second CM400… The Hondas from the early 70’s to the early 80’s are some of my favorite bikes. They’re easy to work on, parts can be found anywhere, and they seem to run forever with just basic maintenance.
I had this same bike here in the UK from new only mine was the 250 version. Basically the same bike, but with sleeved down bores for our then "learner Market" but mine was in the more attractive bronze colour, with slightly different inlays on the tank and side panels. I loved the look of the bike, and traded in my 250 SuperDream (SuperHawk in the US) and it was a real looker. I have photos and even me riding it on 8mm cine film. Great Times.
Just replaced all the little carburetor parts, jets, valves, seals, etc. Was surprised she fired up and runs great. Your pipes are the sane as my 81 cm400. Bought a new 24 cb300, to have a "for sure" bike, but end up toting my wife through the country roads on the old '81.
I had one just like that around 1990 in boston, same color and everything. Someone did a U turn from a parking space in a busy intersection right in front of me and i had to drop it and twisted my knee. I got an insurance check and have no idea what happened to the bike. I used to get up at night and just ride it around because i loved the engine sound from start up and the instrument lights at night and the all around ride.
Cool, My dad passed away in December of '76 and in the spring of '77 my six years older than I brother and I went to a Honda dealer and he talked me into buying a bike. I got a used '75 Honda CB750 when I was 18. I think my brother drove it at first until he got his own bike. Like you my dad wasn't keen on his boys owning any bike so I am sure he was rolling in his grave after I got one. I bought an after market set of bugle horn mufflers for mine where you cut the pipes off an clamp the new ones onto the old pipes. I had the seat back for the passenger and the bars in front. My 750 was high centered. A real bugger to drive when you came to a stop. It would take for me to extend my toes straight done to touch the ground and I was six feet tall. I hated it. I sold it to a classmate that insisted that wanted it. I won't get a bike unless I can put my feet flat on the ground. I kinda want one back. I still have my M endorsement on my drivers license. They keep asking me if I want to keep it and I ask them do I look dead to you? What a stupid question!
Those 750s were a handful...my buddy that had the 400 when we were teenagers was kind short as am I and he had trouble controlling that bike at low speed. That's why he got rid of it and bought the 400 instead
I gave 50 for a cm400 with no rear wheel I didn't have a truck at the time so I couldn't take home I left it there for 2 yrs but he sold it off I couldn't blame him I will have one soon they are all over Clist and market place Good vid I will be following your repairs
I have a cm400 custom it’s all original the only thing I did was removed the baffles out of the megaphone mufflers and you would LOVE the sound it gives it
The gas didn’t go through your seals, it overflows in your carb and flows down the intake manifold into your cylinder and then down into the oil. If you ever find gas overflowed from your carbs you should change the oil before you start it up. Those exhaust tips are stock pipes. Cool bike.
A friend of mine found a parts 400 when we were in highschool. We put the engine on a go cart in shop class. His sisters boyfriend had made one with a 750 cc engine on a go cart. Both were total death machines. Surprised they both lived through it. The 750 would leap all 4 wheels in the air if he reved it up and dumped the clutch.
I had a CB400 back in the early eighties, not sure if that's right model. Looks very close, had wire wheels but same parallel twin. Nice bike and cool series! Take care
Have you done anything on the CM400C wiring harness/diagram? Something isn't right with my wiring and I've been searching long and hard for the answer and the diagram in the manual is kind of a mess and hard to understand.. I'm not sure what to do..
Great and inspiring video man all the way.. I see one near me for 800 bucks. I am 6ft6...would i.be ok on this bike.. Just looking to ride again after many years without throwing a lot of cash down right at the moment...thx👍😊
Nice how things find the right time and place in life. Yes , do you keep it totally original which puts it in a certain price bracket, and often only appreciated by old bastards like us, or do you change it up which might make it lose value in some peoples eyes ????????? I'm looking for one at the moment and that's what brought me to watching all these CM 400 vids.

That’s a cool bike! Love the history about it! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome story Rob!! I love those old Hondas. Thanks for the two wheeled video!!

Cool story. Bit of a rare machine there Rob. Nice clean Sunday driver. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thanx and stay safe.

I've got the automatic version i love it so cool no clutch to deal with and ultra smooth
Had a Honda CL360 - Loved that bike!

It wouldn't hurt...

Hell of a go cart! Those 750 engines were pretty potent for their day..
Awesome story

The cb400 and cm400 bikes were very similar but the CB's were more common I think.
I'm in the process of restoring my 82 cm450e ,
Have you done anything on the CM400C wiring harness/diagram? Something isn't right with my wiring and I've been searching long and hard for the answer and the diagram in the manual is kind of a mess and hard to understand.. I'm not sure what to do..
I haven't touched the wiring on this bike. Sorry to hear you are having trouble
Speedo twitch is probably caused by cable binding of dry gears at the wheel side. Try lubing the cable first.
I lubed the cable last year....no joy. I plan to check it again just in case but suspect the problem is elsewhere....I'll keep you posted

I think this bike would be too small for you. I'm a foot shorter than you and I feel a little cramped on it.
I have an 81 Yamaha xs850, an 81 GL1100I, and an 84 Motoguzzi. Old bikes Rule!
They do indeed!
Working on one myself just need to in seize engine
