For anyone wondering the train does not actually go to George Town itself but the port area and industrial hub of Bell Bay which is just South of George Town township. The port area has a multitude of business’s and a variety of cargo from wood chips to finished timber products, container cargo and bulk cargo. The large piles of ore seen beside the tracks is Manganese which is shipped in from Groote island to use in the Aluminium smelter at the port. The finished product is shipped world wide.
I didn't realise railway lines were so prolific in Tasmania. I take it all are freight only. Are there any passenger services in Tasmania? Maybe Hobart to Launceston and through to Devonport and Burnie. I would suggest buses only throughout Tasmania
There are more railways than people think in Tasmania but there are no passenger services on Tasrail tracks, only freight. The only passenger trains in Tasmania are on tourist lines. 👍😊
Walked to Coldwater Creek Junction a few times then up along the North East Line (commonly called the 'goat track' by ANtasrail and TGR crews). I have some UA-cam of the steam trip to Scottsdale. The Bell Bay line is the most recent constructed about 1972..constructed with earth moving machinery not horse and scoop. Average grade about 1 in 80. Steepest section on the spur APPM-F.R siding @ 1 in 40 for only 1 km.
@@driver667yes it was or is. In 1987 1989 - walked and rode locos between Tonganah and Ledgerwood. Spectacular to get to the top and see the Bass Strait Islands. All my photos and heritage Commission submission is now with TAHO and Dorset Tasmania Historical Group. Jeff Jennings mini doco on Denison Gorge is worth a look. I'm trying to get Local and State Government to see an economic and community commercial development but again easier to try to get cats to start out of a starting gate and race.
@@rsinclair6560 I think there certainly would be potential with that line. I hope they succeed. Tasmania has some great rail tourism opportunities right under their noses but they don't seem to see them. 🤔👍
@@driver667If they worked backward and understood and researched the very limited set tour agenda of visitors to the State and very thought exact statistics on the number of holiday campers on the North East Coast they could present a strong business plan for State funding but unfortunately yet another hobby railway.
Ahhh that shrill sound of a blown EMD engine, they beat the later turbocharged engines for awesome sound! I actually thought a lot of the locomotives down in Tassie has 4 stroke engines, nice to hear an EMD on the apple Isle!

@@eccentricsmithy2746 it has some of the steeper hills in Tasmania with some challenging grades. Add that to the fact that it was heading to one of the busiest export and import ports in Tasmania I would not be surprised if it was dragging some serious weight behind it.

The width between the tracks seems narrower than in the rail videos in Victorian. Is this narrow gauge?
Yes. The Tasmanian rail network is 3'6" (1067mm) gauge. 👍😊
