I wanted to leave a comment here that I feel should be addressed - you do not need to read 6 books in a day to be "intentional with your reading" or to "read well". Whether you are able to read one book a day, week, month, year - the most important thing is to enjoy and appreciate what you're reading. Don't feel pressured to read solely to check off a to-do or TBR list, do it because you enjoy it :) Please also don't feel discouraged if you can't match the reading rates of other people, everyone reads at their own pace ❤
Thank you - this is a really important reminder. There is obviously no need to ever read six books in a day. It is excessive, and I know that. Everyone has different reading preferences, and I enjoy the occasional full reading day so I can focus entirely on books - but, if someone doesn't like that, they should most definitely not read just for the sake of it! Thanks for this comment x
@RubyGranger8 I'm glad you agree 🙂 I see so many people stressing that they haven't read enough and it makes me so sad - as long as you're reading for enjoyment, that's all that really matters
I don't think that was her intention; I genuinely think she was excited to have a reading day. But I do agree with you and I think it's really important for people to be aware of. Trying to read like reading influencers is stressful and completely unreasonable for the vast majority of people. But yet it discourages so many and turns reading into a to do list item, instead of your fun relaxed hobby.
It's also not fun for everyone. I would not personally enjoy reading 6 books in a day, and I genuinely like taking longer over books so that I have more time to live with them. It's fine either way, but I think people are starting to think there are right and wrong ways to enjoy reading, and if you don't read enough, you like ... don't "count" as a reader.
This was delightful! I noticed in this and your previous upload that you include these intermissions where you just sit and chat about your thoughts on a certain topic (like in this case, read-a-thons). They feel spontaneous and conversational as if I am sitting down with you to muse on these matters and it makes me want to think about them more. I hope you will incorporate such sections in your future uploads as well!
I started watching you last year and want to say that i love your video style. You are so wise at a young age, and i love hearing about what you’re reading. You have inspired me to pick up a few classics and read them. I do find i take longer with them, but I’m happy to be reading something written in such a different time. Thank you and keep doing what makes you happy!
Dear Ruby, thank you so much for your videos - and the time and effort you put into them. You make me feel so contented, and I am inspired by your kindness and your love for learning and reading. I‘m so glad that I found your videos. For the first time I found that I’m not the only one who enjoys the things I like and who has a similar aesthetic to me. You give me the confidence to be myself, even if I‘m different to the majority of the people my age. Thank you so much. You make the world a better place! Emmi xx
We had to read Italo Calvino's "Baron in the Trees' in our literature class and after all these years I still come back to read it every through years. Everything I learnt from reading that story still rings true today. I haven't really read too many other stories, except for the other two short stories in the 'Our Ancestors' anthology, but hearing you talk about 'Invisible Cities' is tempting me to explore more. I find Calvino to explore unreliable narration often, and your comments on the perception of a city could be a further play into this type of narration! Thank you Ruby for being such a sweet soul and sharing your reads with us! Happy 2025, I hope we remember to 'let ourselves' move through the year- like your title suggests, instead of applying pressure and force into it.
‘M is for Autism’ is another wonderful middle grade book written my autistic girls. I think it goes deeper into what’s it like for autistic girls, in not just the amazing way we see the world but also the real struggles and meltdowns we go through. Definitely give it a try.
I enjoyed watching this video! I’m dyslexic, and it amazes me how you can read so much in a day. I read at a slow pace, but I’m able to remember everything I’ve read. I can even tell you what page a quote is on, years after reading the book. When I had more free time, and I could spend the whole day reading, it took me three days to finish one book. Now that I have a busier schedule, it takes me months, or even a year, to finish a book. The last book I finished was “The Witching Hour” by Anne Rice, and it took me over a year to finish.
I just spent the entire day yesterday reading Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. It was absolutely delightful❤️ Yes, I had to let some responsibilities fall by the wayside, but I’ll catch up during the week. Thanks for another cozy video😊 Also, thank you for putting the titles and authors in the description.
I read really fast. That being said, I'm not a fan of readathons. Firstly because it's impossible to change your natural reading speed (seriously, try it, whether it's faster or slower: it simply does not work) and secondly because how much of each book do you really remember at the end of the day? I get that it's a fun challenge, but reading to me is about leasure and opening one's mind, which takes time. Books need to be "digested", even if you're a really fast reader. I guess it's just not my thing!
I agree! To me, one of the things I love about reading is losing myself in the story, and I think rushing through a book just to check it off a list would be short-changing myself. I need time to process what I read before picking up another book, and to decide what I want to read next.
I'm like this as well. I like to live with a book. I might binge one book in a day now and then, and even that can be too much. The more I like a book, the more I'm inclined to drag out the read for a while if possible, so it really feels almost like an "era" made up of that experience. This does obviously also depend on the genre etc. But sometimes I see people have "I read 38 books this month" videos, and I literally can't imagine how unpleasant I would find that.
@@klatskyn I get that! And then when you look at what you read at the end of the year it's like "my whole february was influenced by that book" or "this summer I was really into this genre" which ultimately makes you learn about yourself, too. By reading just to tick off boxes in a booktok template, I don't think you get the same experience.
Yes. This is nothing but bing-reading and very disrespectful to the authors. It might be okay with YA novels or trashy romance flicks, but binge-reading "real literature" is nothing but a kick in the authors' guts. No real literature-lover would do that. It's just performance at this point
4:14 it was one of my very first books that we discussed at the Theory class when I’ve started studying Architecture. First Italo Calvino despite has Italian parents was born in Cuba, initially they went to México and then migrate to Cuba short after the Mexican revolution (Mexican civil war) started in 1910. The first edition from the book was on Italian “Le città invisibili” and after its publication in Spanish conserved the same name “Las ciudades invisibles”, both titles has the exact translation in English. And they’re called as invisible because all of them are non existing in a physical space but them classification have an epistemological value for the architecture post modern era, the cities are classified according a predominantly value, like continuity, desire, memory, signs... but all those values were contained in more or less amount on our cities, buildings, and our own selves as a society. Spaces don’t have any value by it self, and the way we use it and live it converge in those values.
@Aldo.flores This sounds interesting! Can I ask you what othe books you've read for your Architecture-Degree? (I am writing a novel and my main character is also studying architecture)
Love your channel so much. Video suggestion (request) for a study tips/mindset video that help you out of an unmotivated phase. Recently you'd said its hard to get motivated when you feel like you'll fail no matter what. Can you do a video on what made you get motivated and get out of that period?
Love this video, especially the "in the moment" reaction to reading all of these books. The emotional and raw response adds so much to your overall reviews. Compelling! Your love of reading shines brightly! Also, you might consider recording audiobooks, lovely voice as ever❤thank you for sharing
Seni seviyorum Ruby. Türkiye'den bir takipçinim. Aslında bunu ingilizce de yazabilirdim ama kendi kelimelerim ile konuşmak, bana kendimi iyi hissettiriyor❤
I adored "Keedie". I also read Toffee by Sarah Crossan, an utter delight, would highly recommend giving it a read if you haven't already! Sending you love for the year ahead, and keep up this book series - I'm loving it❣
I haven’t thought about One in years! When I was in secondary school we were part of a scheme getting a range of books for free and I picked out One and it was so incredible but I’d forgotten until now. Maybe I’ll give it a reread! Also thank you for pointing me towards Ellie McNicoll I’m dyspraxic and constantly on the look out for any form of representation so going to give her other works a go. Love the reading content already :)
Calvino is an incredible writer!! I highly recommend The Invisible Knight, The Baron in the Trees, The Cloven Viscount (3 different books but related). He was an incredible writer and Italian intellectual, I adore him 🫶 PS the original Italian title of the Invisible Cities is exactly the same as in English (Le Città Invisibili) :)
Hi :) I liked the video but I have a little note. Italo Calvino was an Italin author not Spanish. Also a note on the genre, which is postmodernism and magic realism. Magic realism like in Garcia Marquez work. I'll read the Italian original version and I let you know the name of the cities. ;)
Also, I’m not sure if you’ve done a video like this, but could you do a video about how to better comprehend & kind of dissect books? I feel like I never know to properly dissect a book or value its literary worth.
I love how all of the books were from the library, a good reminder that we don't need to buy every single book we want to read. I'm adding "Orbital" to my tbr, which definitely doesn't need more books!😂
Oh, I read Saturday many years ago, but it didn't really stick with me, and I barely remember it. I've also read and loved Atonement, and then another of his books that really stuck with me over the years was Sweet Tooth. I haven't read an Ian McEwan for so long and there are at least 3 of his books I'm keen to read, so maybe I'll bump him up my tbr.
Hi Ruby! I still haven't finished the video yet, but as a fellow Italian follower I just wanted to say that Italo Calvino is Italian and not Spanish like you said at minute 4:10. Your videos are always cozy and inspiring! I also plan on reading a lot this year, starting from Harry Potter!
Hello, another Italian follower here! Just popping in to say that the original title is, in fact, "Le Città Invisibili" so you have an equivalent word in the English edition. 😊
About near-death experience and heaven...People from the beginning needed to believe in sth to explained themselves what they cannot understand.Nothing changed still. It's natural for the human being.I understand that but our dying brain can create different visions (as when we sleep deep).Book 5 U read is needed really,if U are looking for hope for ex. but I do not believe such things and do not gravitate towards these books so I understand it's not for everyone:)
I finished reading Little Women today, truly an amazing book! I’m now going to read Anne of Green Gables which I’m so excited for! Did you manage to read The Miniaturist? Would love to know what you thought of it :)
I adore Anne of Green Gables! I think Anne of the Island is my top favorite out of them all. Read The Miniaturist and enjoyed it too! Have you read Hamnet??
@ I have read Hamnet yes! Ruby recommended it and I adored it :) have you read The House Of Fortune? It comes after the Miniaturist and is equally as good! I got the full box set of Anne of Green Gables for Christmas and I am honestly so excited to start reading it!
@@charlik1ng I have not read House of Fortune yet, will definitely add it to my list! How exciting to get an Anne box set for Christmas! I cherish mine. She is indeed a kindred spirit. 😊 If you love Anne, I recommend Grace of the Wild Things by Heather Fawcett. It’s a middle grade book, a reimagining of Anne but with witches and magic! A great October read for sure.
if you’ve ever felt like no one notices you, trust me, i get it. i felt like that for years, trying all the confidence hacks and advice out there. but nothing clicked until i read Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki. there’s something about chapter 3-it’s like the missing puzzle piece i didn’t know i needed.
Invisible Cities is a beloved masterpiece by Italo Calvino ! It is a great resource for everyone who is interested in the effect of urban environment on human soul and mind. Great choice ! It has great depth and - according to my opinion - should be re-read at a lower pace
Saturday was a bit of drag for me too and I love McEwan. I read it as part of a university course so I have been wanting to pick it back up 3 years later to see if my opinions have changed! I do love The Cement Garden by McEwan but do check potential triggers before reading ❤
As an autistic viewer of yours, it meant so much to hear you talk about the importance of autistic representation in books (and media in general)! Lovely video as always, Ruby!
Italo Calvino was an italian writer, I don't know why on the cover says "spanish fiction" 🤔. You mention that you'd like to know which words were used in the original version, in spanish, but the book was written in italian. Still confused with the sticker 🤨 Edit: the title is: Le città invisibili, the translators kept the original.
This was such a lovely video. Thank you! I put "One" on my list and requested it from my library. I love books-in-verse. Elizabeth Acevedo is great for books like that, if you'd like to read others.
"Le città invisibili" is the original Italian title. I love this book 🥰 Have you read "The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-time" By Mark Haddon? It also deals with autism. One of the best books I've ever read.
That last excerpt from Keedie made my cry! I'm definitely going to check out that authors' work! Would you suggest reading A Kind of Spark or Keedie first?
What pens are you using? I've been researching better pens (even at my old age!) in order to enjoy writing with my hand more! (Nothing wrong with me physically, other than being left handed ha!). I do have a goal of writing in my Pumpkin Productivity planner for at least 10-15 min a day, every singe day!
Idk if you have an option to put a long ad every ten minutes instead of 1 short one every 2 minutes, because that seems much preferable to the latter. Love your Readathons.
Hello JayCo RV past the Taylor Place. Did you see all the demonstrative Steller's Jays last spring? Wasn't that bizarre? I've never the species before in my 26 long years here. I have it on tape/disc.
Ah, Italo Calvino. I went through a whole Italo Calvino phase when I lived in San Francisco lo those many years ago.... Now of course I can't remember a word. But enjoyed them "in the moment"................ You know of course that I'm an Ancient of Days.......... 149 summers passed, each .... year .... gets .... harder....... (Floats into the aether, a PT sighting near the Andromeda Nebula.) ??? ❤
@RubyGranger8 Hmm, nice of you to ask considering I don't remember a word, or maybe a few? If you like the absurd aspect you'd probably like Cosmicomics. But if you want to get to know the man, his posthumous autiobiography Hermit in Paris might be just the thing....
Nice one Ruby. I enjoy the off-camera audio in your household, particularly that 'banging' door which peppers so many episodes and which should have its own channel. I too have a noisy door. 🙂 But seriously, it's a nicely authentic family life addition to your content.
I love your videos, however these ones are contradictory to what you had said before about reading slowly, stats, etc. I don’t think there’s any need to read 6 books in a day and many would be feeling quite confused and intimidated by this, I imagine. I don’t enjoy it - simply too much and it makes me question the feelings/motivations behind such content 😮 makes no difference to me either way, it is an observation of why do it…
You're quite right that six books is excessive! I do enjoy occasionally giving myself the opportunity to read for a full day though. I know not everyone enjoys reading like this - and I don't always - but there are times that I do :) I filmed it because Readathons are some of my most requested videos, and I haven't done one for years x
Nobody "needs" to read 6 books in a day. I get that it's mostly a fun challenge to do on UA-cam but I can't seem to see the point. Do you really retain everything you read? My brain would be fried at the end of the day.
It's an Afrikaans word, and Afrikaans developed from Dutch mostly (because the Netherlands colonised South Africa), with some German and even French influence.
People who love reading do not speed through books like it's a nuisance. People who love reading do not binge-read for the sake of having more books under their belt. People who love reading take their time with the books, reflect on it and let it sit before starting a new one. Ergo, Ruby does not love to read
do you mind giving us some pointers on fastreading? Read a lot as well, but nowhere near six books. I'm curious about how you read so many books? Do you read everything or just some words? :) thanks
@RubyGranger8 That's a lovely skill to have! I'm back in school and got quick naturally, but still, I'm not as fast as I need to be. I've noticed that I have started liking reading. That is a very good sign I suppose! :). your channel inspires me, love your content! Thanks, Lauri
The more you read, the faster you'll get. That being said, people do have different reading speeds, and that's totally fine. I'm a fairly slow reader, and I love being one! Just read at a pace that is comfortable for you and don't stress too much about speed. Ruby is a very fast reader indeed; I think that's pretty uncommon!
I wanted to leave a comment here that I feel should be addressed - you do not need to read 6 books in a day to be "intentional with your reading" or to "read well".
Lovely vlog Ruby! I really enjoyed your video and all your lovely books sound amazing! Happy New Year! :)
I'm so pleased you like it!
Italo Calvino wrote in Italian not Spanish, he lived most of his life in Italy, in Italian it is invisibili which is invisible
if you’ve ever felt like no one notices you, trust me, i get it. i felt like that for years, trying all the confidence hacks and advice out there. but nothing clicked until i read Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki. there’s something about chapter 3-it’s like the missing puzzle piece i didn’t know i needed.
Ah cmon i take ages to finish one book, how i wish i could read ALL these books in a day! marvellous 💖
This was great!!! Thank you I added orbital to my tbr list. Looking forward to more.
I love your reading videos, Ruby
As an autistic viewer of yours, it meant so much to hear you talk about the importance of autistic representation in books (and media in general)! Lovely video as always, Ruby!
So interesting hearing your thoughts about Saturday, I adore it and wondered why nobody ever talks about it, maybe this is why 😂
Italo Calvino was an italian writer, I don't know why on the cover says "spanish fiction" 🤔. You mention that you'd like to know which words were used in the original version, in spanish, but the book was written in italian. Still confused with the sticker 🤨
Edit: the title is: Le città invisibili, the translators kept the original.
This is so lovely Ruby! ❤
Hello from Finland! - Well done, Ruby!😊 I love your love for literature and your positive energy. Keep going the same way! You're fabulous!💜👍
Ruby...you are an inspiration. Read as much as you want for pleasure, for when you start your PhD, you will be extremely busy. ❤
Love your read-a-thon and for discussing the books with us!
5:12 i am curious as to what are those cards hanging over her head?
I enjoyed every book along with you❤ the surrounding was soo soothing
that's so lovely to read!
Envy envy envy How I envy people that can have read a thons ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Só happy for you thanks for sharing xoxoxox❤
Love this readathon ❤❤ I love Saturday the book but it took a while to warm up.
Love long videos, esp readathons🤎
This was such a lovely video. Thank you! I put "One" on my list and requested it from my library. I love books-in-verse. Elizabeth Acevedo is great for books like that, if you'd like to read others.
"Le città invisibili" is the original Italian title. I love this book 🥰
Have you read "The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-time"
By Mark Haddon? It also deals with autism. One of the best books I've ever read.
That last excerpt from Keedie made my cry! I'm definitely going to check out that authors' work! Would you suggest reading A Kind of Spark or Keedie first?
I'm so pleased you're planning to! I'd say read A Kind of Spark first :) x
Oh Lola did some fine singing in the background 😊
It's been a while since I've read Calvino and now want to pick him up again.
Ah that's such a lovely goal! And I really like the Pilot V5 pens in black, and also the vintage zebra sarasas :)
Idk if you have an option to put a long ad every ten minutes instead of 1 short one every 2 minutes, because that seems much preferable to the latter. Love your Readathons.
There's a short ad every two minutes? That's just silly! I'll look into how I can change that. I'm sorry how disruptive that is x
this is literally my dream
I wish I could do a readathon one day 💜
I’m so happy to see so many new videos on your channel ✨
You should let yourself do it at some point - put a day aside at some point if you can, and just let yourself read all day x
I loved Saturday by Ian McKewan
I'm sure I'll try it again at some point - but I just could not click with it
Calvino is Italian
Thank you for telling me!
exactly!
Hello JayCo RV past the Taylor Place. Did you see all the demonstrative Steller's Jays last spring? Wasn't that bizarre? I've never the species before in my 26 long years here. I have it on tape/disc.
The first novel sounds like O Henry's The Voice of the City. Have you read that?
Ah, Italo Calvino. I went through a whole Italo Calvino phase when I lived in San Francisco lo those many years ago.... Now of course I can't remember a word. But enjoyed them "in the moment"................ You know of course that I'm an Ancient of Days.......... 149 summers passed, each .... year .... gets .... harder....... (Floats into the aether, a PT sighting near the Andromeda Nebula.) ??? ❤
He's wonderful! Do you have a favourite? Which should I read next?
@RubyGranger8 Hmm, nice of you to ask considering I don't remember a word, or maybe a few? If you like the absurd aspect you'd probably like Cosmicomics. But if you want to get to know the man, his posthumous autiobiography Hermit in Paris might be just the thing....
@ Cosmicomics looks right up my street! I'll give it a go! :)
Nice one Ruby. I enjoy the off-camera audio in your household, particularly that 'banging' door which peppers so many episodes and which should have its own channel. I too have a noisy door. 🙂 But seriously, it's a nicely authentic family life addition to your content.
hey ruby!
Hey Ruby! Could you tell us more about your reading journal? Love your videos 🥰
You must speed read so quickly!
@ of course, Ruby. Just an observation, video felt a bit off, but I love your content and channel generally ❤️
Love this, yay!
I’m had the exact same issue with Saturday, I ended up finishing it- and it did get better but the first 100 pages were meh
You are my hero.❤❤❤
6 in a day! OMG
I normally only manage one a week.
I'm not into readathons because I'm sure I wouldn't remember most of what I read 😅.
Nobody "needs" to read 6 books in a day. I get that it's mostly a fun challenge to do on UA-cam but I can't seem to see the point. Do you really retain everything you read? My brain would be fried at the end of the day.
@@Jusdepommerose let alone those videos of 24 hours reading without sleep, even more pointless imo.
@@JusdepommeroseNeurodivergence manifests in many ways. 😊
@@DrD2You Agreed! But readathons are also a bit of a trend.
Oh my gosh I was so convinced that 'rooibos' was a Dutch word, that is so interesting!
It's an Afrikaans word, and Afrikaans developed from Dutch mostly (because the Netherlands colonised South Africa), with some German and even French influence.
HOLA...HELLO, Greetings from Venezuela (South America) 😊😊😊
Hi! From Reno Nevada!
Hello!
❤
People who love reading do not speed through books like it's a nuisance. People who love reading do not binge-read for the sake of having more books under their belt. People who love reading take their time with the books, reflect on it and let it sit before starting a new one. Ergo, Ruby does not love to read
Ruby, can you do a new workout routine video?
How does one fully digest a book if reading 6 in one day 🤔
First viewer rn btw. Please can u give me GCSE tips I got them in June?
Hi Ruby❤
❤❤❤❤❤
do you mind giving us some pointers on fastreading? Read a lot as well, but nowhere near six books. I'm curious about how you read so many books? Do you read everything or just some words? :) thanks
I am naturally quite quick at reading without meaning to be, but I can definitely think through this and see what advice I may be able to offer x
