I work for a dealer that sells Brother, Juki, and Janome machines and I can tell you that Juki wins hands down for sewing and serging. A little side note though, we repair more of the 1034D and Singer Heavy Duty sewing machines and sergers than any other newer model. The Heavy Duty machines are easy to knock out of time and the Brother 1034 is cheaply made and we've had people break multiple parts of the machine.
I just bought a Singer S0235 ($600 NZD) - it’s a recent release from Singer. I was thinking of buying the Brother 4234D ($750 NZD) and went in to try the demo. The automatic threader wasn’t working very well (which is one of the main reasons I was interested in it) and it was a bit loud / clackity when sewing (although the stitching was beautiful) so I asked if there were any other options. The consultant said she wasn’t a big fan of the heavy duty Singers. But there was a cheaper Singer overlocker that sews beautifully and worth considering. We pulled it out of the box, threaded it (rather easy color coded instructions) and I fell in love. It sews really smoothly with a love stitch and is perfect for my home needs. I was also stoked that it was cheaper than the option I was considering. It’s a gorgeous, dusty Yale blue colour. The instruction booklet is great. Gives you a chart to tell you how to set the tensions depended on what material you’re sewing. We tested it sewing 4-6 layers of calico and it’s a little workhorse. I’m so happy with my purchase. 😍 The Singer S0235 is definitely an option for home sewers and diyers! 🤓
@Transplanted1 Hi ‘ I also have my brother serger 1034d for only 2 years. I did not use it frequently . Recently I found the threads jammed and the fabric was puckered . Therefore I give up to use it. I agree with you they are cheaply made to people to repair themselves , not required specialty tools ! How lucky you are have a handily man . That is wonderful !
For those who don't like to read or read all the way through the manual, brother decided to put this direction waaaay at the back. "Oil machine before use" and show you where. I think that's where alot of noise complaints come from with the brother. Its the upper looper bar that needs to be oiled. Page 57
Just got my new brother and it didn’t come w oil (some brands do tho) but how am I supposed to use it now without going out and buying some oil. Sort of annoying. Now I’ll need to research the best oil. The diagram on pg 57 shows only 2 spots to be regularly oiled
@@kathleenkeenan2384 order maxi lock thread from wawak they usually have the best price and get a bottle of lily white oil with the extending tube in the tip. You'll need the thread anyway
I have the brother 1034DX and it's basically the exact same machine - I absolutely LOVE it and it changed my sewing life for the better!! It had a small learning curve, but instead of taking a week to finish sewing something...I'm now done in a day :)
@Transplanted1 Yes, there are a lot of new/different features. I bought the new one and I like it. I like the new features on the new one better, except that I read the old one can do 2 more smaller stitch lenghths, and the manner to remove the knife may be easier perhaps? But I do fine with mine. Its easy to use and there are a lot of improvements on it in my opinion, except for the 2 I mentioned.
I've had my Brother 1034d for 14 years now, had it serviced perhaps 5 times, and changed the blades out once (I think they're due for another change). It just keeps going! It's so easy to thread, so I never use the tie-off shortcut. I can't bring myself to purchase a fancier serger because this one just keeps chugging on! I appreciate you showing the threading on the other machines. I didn't realize others weren't as easy as the Brother!
agree, i had trouble deciding on my first serger too, this video has made it clear, that brother should be my first. not just because it`s brilliant price here in uk
I'm a newbie, brought a singer from HSN 10 yrs. never touch it until the last yr. due to COVID, watching videos learn to make a face mask, gotten good at it, made some for the whole family, fast forward, I switch to Brothers, really like it, but I say to myself, I want to learn to make my own clothes or like yourself mock clothes, etc. I ran across Mimi G. videos, she teaches newbies to sew. and she said people should invest in a Serger ( didn't know what she was talking about ) so I found your video, Brother 1034D was her #1 choice, so I just purchase one today, thank you for taking the time to review the serger. I'm excited to add sewing to my resume, recently went back to school to get my degree in Criminal Justice after 50 yrs. THANK YOU AGAIN... BEAUTIFUL LADY :)
“I don’t know what y’all gotta go through. I know what I gotta go through!” You were so serious too. All those denim up cycles you do I know the serger has be up to the task. Thanks for the review.
I truly appreciate the work you do when you are comparing the different sewing products that you use. FIRST, you should truly be SPONSORED by BROTHER at least!! 2). The comparisons are unbiased. 3). You are concise and you always make it known it is YOUR opinion and you don't hide the sewing demonstrations. This was very informative and truly appreciated! As a decent sewer, layers are important when say, sewing a tweed or heavy wool coat with interfacing AND lining. I have Brother sewing/serger machines, but I started on Singer machines, one was 30+years old (it has a bullet-shaped bobbin).
Thank you so much!! These videos take a ton of time, but I live for unbiased comparison videos whenever I'm looking for new electronics. So I try to provide that for is sewists. Thank you for talking about the layers. I always get questions about why I would need to sew that much. Lastly, a bullet shaped bobbin. 😲 I've never heard of anything like that.
@@BlueprintDIY Yes, early sewing machine models have an oval shuttle and bobbin. It's called a vibrating shuttle. It's pretty interesting to learn about sewing machines and how they evolved. i still don't understand exactly how they work.. People who don't sew, can't understand why you do this or that. For instance, i saw the store-bought items with various pieces that were stay-stitched. I didn't understand why would anyone bother to sew through a single layer of fabric... last year i found out why - to stabilize the edge of that garment piece, as stay-stitching is usually done on curves - arm holes, top of the sleeves, necklines...
@@sapphirecamui6447 and @BlueprintDIY I hadn't either until I had to refill the bobbin. The machine was my great-aunt's and she said she got it as a gift from a former employer's daughter. My great-aunt passed over 30yrs ago, but she was 90.
I love your energy and videos. I bought a Brother 1034D about a year ago and it sat under my sewing table. Admittedly I was still learning to sew with a regular sewing machine, but given that I mostly sew men’s clothes (our family of 4 is all guys) I figured I would get into it eventually. But honestly things other people said about serging intimidated me a bit. Then I needed to power through some pyjama builds… so I thought I’d give it a whirl. It was easy to thread, not hard to adjust tensions (and in fact it sewed like butter on the standard tensions), and I LOVE it! So fast, so easy to “steer” fabric, so neat and clean a 4 thread stitch! I’m sold on the Brother 1034D, and your video confirms that I made a good decision! (I started with a Brother CE1000 and have just purchased a Brother ST150HDH, so I am thankful for all your videos!) Now I need a coverstitch machine…. lol
Yayyy, I’m so glad! I told myself I was going to buy a cover stitch machine this year too. Other people have me intimidated as well. I just need to do it.
This video was so informative!! Not to mention the filming and editing is flawless! By far the best serger review I’ve found. Thank you so much! Can’t wait to watch more of your videos ☺️
This video arrived in my feeds at the right time. My Juki Mo 645 died not to long ago. I have moved and I am sure something happened... My sewing teacher has the same and two other brand and I was going to change brand just to experiment. After watching you I realized that I am used to my Juki and will purchase again. The price here in Feb 2023 is 650 euros (that was a good price) in a mom and pop store which usually I prefer to encourage. (but) I have found a used one that I will go see soon. Thank you for this video, ciao from Italia
I came across your video by accident but love it. Little over a decade ago, I bought Singer serger. That thing wouldn't sew more than an inch on regular weight cotton fabric. Drove me crazy for 2 days and I returned it. Brother was my 2nd option so I got it. I still have and love it and it's been over a decade. I actually got used 2nd Brother serger, Lock 925D which has dark thread on it but honestly it takes me literally less than 2 minutes to thread the whole thing. I think it takes longer to put the thread through the needle eyes lol. There are people suggesting sergers with air threading etc but I prefer to know my machines. I mean it's basic knowledge to know hot to thread your sewing machines. It's like not knowing how to fuel up your car.
You and MiMi G got me wanting to learn to sew....and I stay at the thrift store on Mondays!!! You gone have me looking cute with this new skill this year🔥💥
i used to own a lower model Singer that served me well for the first few years of my sewing experience, but post-pandemic and a bunch of mask making reawakened my love for sewing. i ventured into upholstery and made a headboard for our be!! the lower end Singer just continued to break needles and despite oiling was loud and clunky. i bought the 1034D after reading a ton of reviews and comparisons of features for sergers in the comparable price range. from out the box, i have loved this thing!! it’s really smooth and fairly quiet compared to my old Singer. i have become more adventurous with using more than just the simple 3 thread overlock. i recently serged all the edges of a Little Mermaid costume that i made out of hand dyed gauze with ROLLED HEMS and it was super easy to learn and apply for layers and layers of gauze!! i just live your energy and style and am glad i found your review to confirm that i did buy the best serger for my needs ❤️ yes Brother it’s time to sponsor this sister!! 😘
Thank you for these informational videos. I’ve been so intimidated with learning about servers but you make it so easy. Here I am proud that I can wind a bobbin and thread my machine, meanwhile she’s threading 12 threads on 3 different machine for the sake of helping us. The behind the scenes work is real.
The past few days I’ve been back and forth debating buying a serger. How I missed this video last week is beyond me lol but I’m glad I’m watching it now and I’ve even more convinced to buy a serger. I need one in my life!!!! Thank you!!!!
I plan to buy a serger and have been waiting for your review. I wish I had found you before I dropped $500 on a regular machine 15 years ago. Oh well, live and learn. I've found you now and I am thrilled! I love watching what you create. Your style is not my style, but your enthusiasm and teaching style ensures that I take something away from every episode. I love watching your channel and eagerly await each new episode. Best of luck. You are amazing!
This is the best Serger comparison video, I've been Sewing 4 over 15 yrs, never used a Serger, but I need 1 so badly, thank you so much 4 this video. I'm get the Brother Serger!!!!
Thank you so much for your comparison.. I bought a Brother 1034D 2 years ago and it is still in the box because I feared the threading process. You've shown me the pros and cons and I am now ready to serge!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to compare and share with all of us. I have had and loved a Juki serger. I have never sewn 6 layers of denim but did use for making quilts, drapes, pillows, pillow shams and tons of clothing. Sadly it was lost due to storm damage. I then was gifted a Brother. My love for my Juki will always remain but I have to admit to having a new love. I am able to do everything that I have always done with my new Brother. I have also discovered that it is much easier for certain applications that the Brother is superior. Making ruffles has never been easier!
I have a Singer 4423 Heavy Duty (regular sewing machine). It also shakes a LOT. But, I've made 19 quilts on this poor machine and it is still going. I've been thinking about getting a serger because I'd like to go back to making clothing. Frankly, they scare me and look so complicated. Thank you for all the helpful knowledge you share. Gave me a lot to think about. :)
Denim has flat fell seams. Now when those flat fell, many-layered seams CROSS or come together, you can have 6 or more layers. I alter denim often and run into this.
Yes! I tried to alter a denim jacket but couldn’t get seams through my machine lol. I had to sew up to the felled seam and skip it then hand sew the flat-felled parts.
@Transplanted1 seams sewn together normally. One side of the seam cut down, the other side is folded over that shorter side, then folded under itself and top stitches.
I thought you were extremely helpful! You covered more information regarding sergers then any other videos I watched. Thank you! I hope brother gives you a 2023 model 😊
I have a Singer ProFinish it's a beast and can handle what I throw at her, a lot of things are user error most all machines are made in the same factories with Japanese & China parts. This I know I sell machines & you wouldn't be able to tell the difference except for the tag. I appreciate your videos they are very interesting :)
This was so awesome! I've always been intrigued (and intimidated) by sergers, and have stayed away from trying to sew Spandex or other materials where a serger is pretty much what you need. I have a Singer H-D sewing machine (purchased based on your review, actually), and was hopeful the Singer H-D serger would be as good. But, you've sold me on the Brother. The fact that yours is 5 years and going strong is perhaps the best testament to its quality and also that you still highly recommend it after all that time. I haven't been sewing much lately, so can't justify buying it at the moment, but I'm really impressed with its performance based on your review here. Thank you as always, Angelina, for the great content you create ❤️ ! Your videos always seems to come at the perfect time 😊.
Oh MY GOODNESS!! RIGHT ON TIME!! I have been looking back and forth trying to figure out which one I am getting. Thank you The loud shaking is a deal breaker for this girl. I appreciate you!!!!! Brother it is
Thank you! I watched this BECAUSE of your layer test - which was fantastic. Been sewing with Sherpa and keep breaking my moms 25 y.o. Serger so thought it’s time I get my own and since I’ve been doing projects now with heavier fabric this was super helpful!
Thank you for your "Surger Showdown". I own a Singer Stylist (looks just like the Heavy Duty) and what you said is true for it too. Mine shakes terribly as well and it's NOT because of the fabric. The problem with it sewing and becoming hung up is what I experienced while sewing satin pillowcases! With almost every pillowcase I felt like the machine might break. I did break a needle and replaced it with a Universal needle and had no more problems. I bought mine thru HSN and it came with several feet. I'm glad I have it and don't see buying a new one any time soon.
This is my first time watching this young lady. I really like her. Clear explanations and very informative. I don't currently own a serger but I'm thinking I want one. I will be looking at more of her tips and reviews.
My 85 year old mother wanted a sewing machine and it was this video that I was able to buy her a Brother in her favourite colour......blue!! I bought it for her for Mother's Day this year. I haven't always been in the financial position to do so but it was so reasonable. Thank you!! xoxo
You won't be sorry. I have the Brother 1034D and it is a great machine. Threading it is so easy, which I think is one of the most important aspects of a serger.
I am using my Mothers Brother overlocker she gave it to me as she is 95 and cant see to sew anymore . She bought it in 1968 and it is still going strong .So they are a very good brand
Sewing upholstery fabrics is tough too. It’s so thick and sometimes you need a machine that can handle the layers. I have been looking at the Brother as opposed to the Singer so this review was very helpful. Thanks Angelina! 👍🥰
I truly appreciate your willingness to research each of the machines. I have a Brother1043D and have never regretted my decision. Thanks for the confirmation - even 2 years late on my part!
Thank you for this example. I was iffy about buying the Singer Heavy Duty almost 7 years ago. Now I have watched your demonstration I am upset that I did not trust my feelings of it did not look Heavy Duty. As a sewer, I have my regrets about upgrading.
I love that you did this. I am a Husqvarna Viking girl. My very first sewing machine was a Viking and I loved it. Then we had relocated to a new area and there was a dealer very close to my home. Naturally, of course I ended up upgrading to a way more expensive machine. I love that machine so much. I was so blankets and pillows ,window treatments., Costumes for my son, and for the neighbors kids. So that machine was about 10 years old or more. After going to a sewing expo, I have seen the latest machine in their line. So I immediately traded in my old faithful for this brand new, “lemon of a machine”. I was so incredibly disappointed. It was only after I had purchased a machine I realize that it was made in China and not in Sweden like my old one. It would constantly, jam break needles, skipped stitches, has computer overrides, or my all-time favorite. I would get birds nests on the bottom of what I was sewing. And this within the first month of me having it. The dealer tried to explain that it was something that I was doing. Told him that I can show him a video of what I was doing. After he saw the video of what I was doing his exact words,”were that’s weird we’ve never had that before.” I had to bring it in to be serviced $80 later. I was furious. Then my server that I had which was also Husqvarna Viking 910 serger, started to give me trouble. I noticed when I was threading my machine. I would literally have the most difficult time with the lower lever thread. It would automatically break after a few stitches. So then I took the machine apart, clean to thoroughly, and the same thing would happen. So what I realized is that machine is jammed. Since the area that I am in, has the only service for Viking sewing machines. And that is now closed.😢😢 so I have no clue as to what to do. But what I did do was order the brother serger machine that you featured in this video. I’ll have to let you guys know how I like it.
Thank you, thank you!!!! You answered all of my questions. Excellent review!!! Yes, in my opinion, Brother owes you a new machine for demonstrating just how good a serger they have created! Brother's advertisement videos do not even compare! You converted me!!!
I purchased the Brother 1034D in 2016. I previously owned a White Serger for 900.00, and the White serger was fraught with stitching issues. I had this serger serviced many times to no avail. So I am thrilled beyond words with my Brother 1034 D serger. I have had No problems with the Brother serger, and have stitched many Outfits with this serger. The stitch quality is excellent. I originally thought a 200.00 Brother serger would be junk. I was pleasantly surprised about the great quality of the Brother 1034D. I highly recommend the Brother 1034D.
I am going to be buying a brother real soon I really love the tutorial it was very helpful I guess my fear was always threading the machine but I'm going to get one and I've been sewing for about 40 years but it's a definite the brother
Yes, the threading had me scared for a long time. I'm so surprised other companies haven't made a better effort to simplify the threading. Well, they do have sergers that thread themselves, but they're more expensive.
Appreciate your video. My Brother has endured for several years. But now that it has messed up timing, even after several videos, it just won’t fix. I related to the comment saying how many they get in for repair. Based on your video and comments, I believe I am going to try the Juki. Glad I found you.
I have the Juki MO 654D which has a few nicer options than the 644D but I absolutely love it!! I spent $379. It is so quiet and peaceful, I can actually carry on a conversation while using it! I picked the Juki over the Brother because it’s higher quality, and the open threading is easier to clean than the lay in threading. It is a pain to thread the first couple times, but you get used to it. Side note: the 654 has a little lever to pull the lower looper down to thread so you don’t have to reach thru the machine like she mentioned.
I miss my brother 1034D serger, I regret selling it when I moved to the U.K. should have kept it. It is a great serger, had it for 8 years and worked beautifully, never a problem, only had to replace the blade once or twice. I now have a singer I bought at Lidl for £ 130 and it just doesn’t compare, not the same quality.
I need to tell you that you were the first sewing channel I stumbled upon when I started sewing. You're one of my all time faves. I'm so happy to know that your channel has gotten so big. Big thanks from me and keep it up. ❤️
I'm really surprised that the Juki had issues. I have had a variety of sewing machines, including Brother, Juki, Singer, Pfaff, Viking, and more. I always go back to my Jukis because of how powerful they are, even the Juki serger I had. I honestly don't enjoy using my serger though so I sold it, lol. I am looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you so very much that was so helpful. This will be my first surgery and you really opened my eyes to what needs to be looked at and I will go through you to buy a brother. Thank you so much.❤❤❤
First of all, I'm looking into getting a serger, and this was so useful and helpful, very appreciated. The only thing, I'm in Canada, maybe the prices are different, but the brother and Juki models are both a little over $500 and the singer is just over $300. I feel like this makes a big difference
Excellent! I loved this video, thank you. I am waiting for my Brother serger to arrive. I ordered a 1034DX. Wish me luck as this is my first. I don't think I will ever sew 6 layers but two to three may be in the mix.
Absolutely amazing video. You are wonderful!!!! Thank you so much for making this. Very very helpful while I’m shopping for a serger. I make historical gowns and when I’m making corsets and bodices sometimes I am sewing through multiple layers of upholstery fabric so this is great info. Thank you thank you thank you. So glad I found your page
I have two Singer sewing machine: Simple and Heavy Duty. Even the Simple model shakes like crazy! I've had things bounce and dance around on my table and fall off while I was sewing. I'm interested in getting a serger next and your video was so thorough, honest, and helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for this video! I bought a Brother at the beginning of the summer and was enrolled in a class that got cancelled! So I have to learn to use it!
I watched this video and I decided to go with the Brother 1034d, so I just ordered it. I’ve never used a serger and I know there is a learning curve. I just love your energy and enthusiasm.
Great video. I sew thick things and I have a old huskylock 430 . Consider the older machines with more metal parts if you sew thick things. Threading is a bit harder but you get a sewing machine with less plastic and much cheaper. I bought my 430 for $35. Almost all metal machines as a rule holdup well sewing thick things.
I bought the Brother 1034D surgery in 2018, when I started spending winters in Florida. I already owned a far more expensive Kenmore surgery. I found that the Brother 1034D serger was so much easier to thread and operate, and I didn't have a lot of the issues that I with more expensive Kenmore serger. When I got back home to Ohio, I immediately bought another one for use here and I now prefer to use the 1034D over the Kenmore. I have actually recommended this serger to other people looking for a reliable serger. This product gives more bang for the buck and produces excellent results.
I've just discovered a love for sewing during quarantine. The two sergers I was considering were the Brother and the Singer. This video helped a lot! I'm still on the fence. I don't know what I would ever use it for, but the two thread option sounds interesting. A case of I'd rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. 🤷🏾♀️ Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Thank you, this has been very helpful. I'm in the market for a Serger and trying to figure out which one to save for. I have zero experience with one so basically all of the little nuances you pointed out have been so eye-opening! Love the tips from a pro who can tell me what nit-picky things to look out for haha
Hi, I'm a newbie sewer that have come to the conclusion that I think I would like a serger too. I already have the ultimate (in my opinion) sewing machine. I have a vintage Husqvarna Automatic from 1961 (I also believe). So far he's (yes he's a he. He told me that when I first set him up, and who am I to argue? He's the one who who would know, right?) done everything I ask of him. He is quiet, steady and you can also use him as an anvil should the need arise. However, even if I'm looking for a pre-own serger, they don't come up very often in my country, and if they do they go silly high prices, at auctions. So I'm also looking into buying a new one. As I have no experience of sergers I find this comparison beautiful. You're hitting the points that I have been pondering as of late, especially the one of being relatively quiet and don't go walkabout while you're trying to stop the fabric you're working with from fraying. Thank you so much. No I'm off to see if that alternative Juki is available in the north of Europe and at what price. Again Thank you for putting this together. Yours, Ann
I have owned the Brother 1034D for more than a decade. I often use decorative (metallic, fuzzy, stretch, etc) in the upper loopers for rolled hems and lettuce edge. Gorgeous rolled hems. Threading is not my favorite pastime, but once you understand how the serger works, it gets easier and easier to do. I've gone a whole year without having to re-thread.
I own the Brother 1034 and I have nothing but good things to say about it. Like you, I'd say it's easy to thread and change out needles. I'd recommend this model to anyone but especially first time users.
Love the long hair, you look beautiful!!! Thank you, I want one, but they're so expensive. I will definitely consider your advice! ❣️God bless and stay safe!! 💕
Got a Brother 1034D yesterday. My 70th birthday. Looking for the specs I found them under Brother's "commercial" listing. Bottem of their commercial models, but that six layer test convinces me I got something good.
Really interesting video. I've heard a lot of good for the brother so with this video in addition I will definitely keep that in mind when I want to buy it. Sadly I saw the price is a bit higher in the Netherlands (were I'm from) but not that much. I will have to save up anyway. Funny thing was I wanted to compare the other sergers but the singer is not for sale here and the juki is much more expensive with a price of ~ 465 euro. I really liked that you describe as best as you could what you saw, what you felt and also especially what for you is easy threading. I think that is something really important, but sometimes it is forgotten that what means easy to someone doesn't mean easy to the other. Always nice to see something that entertains and that you learn something from it as well (just don't know if my wallet agrees, but oh well).
Thank you!! When I first bought the Brother Serger it was over $400. I resold thrift clothes on ebay just to get it, so I understand. Money's not growing on tress especially these days.
My first serger was a second hand Brother 1034 purchased from a dealer with a 90 day warranty. I kept it for several years but ultimately it did not have the power to sew through three layers of denim, let alone 4 or 6. I sold it and bought a Juki 654 which sewed beautifully and quietly through up to 4 layers of denim. After 2 years of struggling with the threading, I sold it. I now have an air threaded BabyLock Celebrate which I use 100% more than I ever used either of the other 2 sergers. Threading is a breeze and the needles are straight up and down like a sewing machine so needle replacement is easy. So far it sews easily through all kinds of fabric and layers and has a beautiful looking stitch. I will say that the Brother serger is a good starting machine especially for light to medium weight fabrics.
Thank you very much for this comparison. I am looking, right now, at buying a used Brother 1034D, and you convinced me to GO GET HER!! About a year ago, I purchased a (very) used Bernette Funlock 004, and it is a BEAR to thread, especially when something goes wrong. I was hoping to find a cheap air-threader, but those are way out of my price range and it looks like this little beauty will fill the bill. Thanks again - I love all your upcycling videos also!
Thank you so much for doing such a thorough comparison of these three machines!!! I'm trying to figure out which serger I should buy next. I'm working on a Brother 1134D, which doesn't have a thread-catcher (not a deal breaker for me), but I bought it used and it has its limits. For an example, I cannot sew more than 4 layers of knits (let alone more than 2 layers of thick fleece). It really limits me in my choice of fabric and/or patterns. But most definitely not the Singer Heavy Duty serger as I sew a lot at night and I cannot have the whole house shaking from the machine. Then I constantly change my threads for colour or different quality. So the threading difficulty with the Juki doesn't make it appealing to me. So maybe a brand new Brother 1034D...The search continues!
Thanks for the review! I ordered the singer heavy duty on Amazon yesterday and decided to cancel my order and give the brother a try. I had a singer before and it started causing me problems it was very old so I thought I would get a newer version. But after watching your video I decided to get the brother instead to try something different. The singer definitely shakes pretty bad so I agree with that so hopefully I will have better luck with the brother. Seems like a lot of ppl are having great results with brother. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
Thanks for your video. I own the Brother 1034DX and I love it. I’ve had it for a couple of years now. I don’t sew as much as you do but so far I’ve really enjoyed using it. I’ve had no problems and I don’t think threading it is hard. I’m amazed how many people are intimidated by threading it, but I have a natural ability to work with mechanical things. I used to tear apart our vacuum cleaner and replace the belt, or clean off the roller on it so maybe it’s just me. Anyway, I own a number of Brother products and so far so good. I’m hoping to buy their Coverstitch machine this month, and I hope it performs equally as well as everything else I own that is made by them.
Thank you so much for this video, I’ve had the brother 1034D for years - it’s way more than 5yrs but I don’t know exactly and I love it. I wasn’t sure if I had to attach a different presser foot to go through lots of layers so it was great to see that I don’t have to. Thank you! 😀
This is a really good comparison video. I actually have a Singer SO230 (sort of the step below the one you showed here) and I actually find that one to be not horrible to thread. Definitely easier than my old EZLock from the 80s. That thing is an absolute nightmare to thread. EDIT: I'm also glad to know that my Singer isn't the only lout one. I was beginning to think that mine had an issue because of how loud it is.
Thank you. I'm considering what type of serger to buy. Your demo really helped. I"m a weaver and locking the ends quickly and securely once the cloth comes off the loom is very important. Looks like I'll get a Brother.
I got a Brother 1034D for Christmas. So far, so good. Not sure why so many find these hard to thread but I use industrial Juki sewing machines and a Demontron bartacker at work (I also sew for my 9-5 😅) so maybe I'm just used to threading and going through all the little spots you have to.
I just started sewing, and I have been looking to buy a serger! I found this exact model of Juki on Facebook market place for $75! it doesn't have all of the accessories but it works and it is like new! I honestly didn't know anything about which machine to buy so i took a chance, but its nice to see that it seems to be a really nice quality machine :D
I have the Juki MO50E that you showed, yes you do thread it front ways like the other 2. It also has the easy thread little function for the looper. I have to say I’m surprised at the Juki on that test, I for a charity twice used the Brother one and I found it to be so different to the Juki. The brother was shuddering sooo badly and sounded so “clunky” while my Juki is extremely smooth, I found a huge difference between the 2.
Yes I agree with you, I used the brother (I tried 2 different ones) in a charity sew day, so I was on them for a good amount of time , I was so happy to get back to my Juki MOE50E.
New sergers definitely have their benefits but I have an OLD Juki mo103n that still sews as she said 'like butter' and is so quiet! It will sew through anything and asks for more!! I'm continually amazed by how it almost silently mows through layer upon layer and has for over 40 years- wow! You can't beat that!
I’m surprised the Juki choked on the 6 layers. I’ve had mine for years and it sews everything and never feels like it’s working hard at all. I’ll have to try sewing more layers and see how it does.
@@Tyreselynn I did, and it choked similar to the way your test Juki did. That said, I’ve never had a need to put that much fabric through it at once, so it isn’t really a issue for me. I really like the stitch quality and it handles specialty threads and even fine yarn well for decorative stitches. I enjoy your videos and this smack down was very interesting.
Just cut the threads (close to the thread spools) leaving it threaded. Tie new spools to the still threaded string and pull through! All you will have to through is thread the needle!
Thanks 👍🏾
This is such important information, thank you!
This is helpful info! Thanks
All I sew is 10-ounce canvas with my Juki MO 644D. I sew two and four levels. keep it well oiled. Love your attitude, join the Juki world
I like all the areas you decided to go in details about, nothing to skip in this video, every bit was useful, thank you !
For those who don't like to read or read all the way through the manual, brother decided to put this direction waaaay at the back.
"Oil machine before use" and show you where. I think that's where alot of noise complaints come from with the brother. Its the upper looper bar that needs to be oiled.
Page 57
Sergers are to be oiled in at least 6 places, darling; not just the upper looper.
@@2010stoof thank you!
I have the brother 1034DX and it's basically the exact same machine - I absolutely LOVE it and it changed my sewing life for the better!! It had a small learning curve, but instead of taking a week to finish sewing something...I'm now done in a day :)
Yes, a complete game changer!
Looks really complicated but, intriguing.
@Transplanted1 Its the newer model
I have this same machine I broke my needle plate a few days ago & can’t find where to get a replacement 🥲
This was the BEST comparison video I have watched on these sergers, so thank you so much for putting it out there. I have a Brother 1034d as well. :)
Thank you!! 😊
Brother 1034D all the way!
agree, i had trouble deciding on my first serger too, this video has made it clear, that brother should be my first. not just because it`s brilliant price here in uk
I was really surprised with the Juki!
@@BlueprintDIY I really need to get the Brother 1934D
"I don't know what y'all going through. I know what I have to go through." I wish more people had that insight!
@@kellyebrown8098 I would never get rid of that machine. It has such a lovely story.
Exactly, if I want to sew a coat, I need something that let me sew many layers.
(I started with a Brother CE1000 and have just purchased a Brother ST150HDH, so I am thankful for all your videos!)
Now I need a coverstitch machine…. lol
Yayyy, I’m so glad! I told myself I was going to buy a cover stitch machine this year too. Other people have me intimidated as well. I just need to do it.
I would make use of your serger to prep fabric edges before washing
You don't, it only does one thing that your other two achieve can do, its a waste of your money
I saw this video after I'd already purchased the Brother 1043d. I'm so happy to see that I made the best choice!
I’ve been researching sergers recently! This came at a perfect time, thank you!
This is the best sewing channel ive ever seen omg
Thank you 💕
When I serge denim, I always change to denim needles. It makes a huge difference!
I have 3-5 layers most of the time I sew because I am mostly a bag maker. This was a great help in choosing what I want to spend my money on
I came across your video by accident but love it. It's like not knowing how to fuel up your car.
the shaking on a singer, i think its a trademark. even the machines i have shake. i love brother..
You and MiMi G got me wanting to learn to sew....and I stay at the thrift store on Mondays!!! You gone have me looking cute with this new skill this year🔥💥
Yes girl! You can do it!
This year is the year gucc who, H& Never again.
i used to own a lower model Singer that served me well for the first few years of my sewing experience, but post-pandemic and a bunch of mask making reawakened my love for sewing. i ventured into upholstery and made a headboard for our be!! the lower end Singer just continued to break needles and despite oiling was loud and clunky. i bought the 1034D after reading a ton of reviews and comparisons of features for sergers in the comparable price range. from out the box, i have loved this thing!! it’s really smooth and fairly quiet compared to my old Singer. i have become more adventurous with using more than just the simple 3 thread overlock. i recently serged all the edges of a Little Mermaid costume that i made out of hand dyed gauze with ROLLED HEMS and it was super easy to learn and apply for layers and layers of gauze!! i just live your energy and style and am glad i found your review to confirm that i did buy the best serger for my needs ❤️ yes Brother it’s time to sponsor this sister!!
Yayyy, I'm so glad!
I'm sorry that you lost your old one, but so glad you were able to get a new one! Once you're used to using a serger, it's hard to live without one.
Girl I bought a Brother yesterday, I’m so ready to return it, it took me all afternoon to figure out how to thread it, thank you for your video.
Denim has flat fell seams. Now when those flat fell, many-layered seams CROSS or come together, you can have 6 or more layers. I alter denim often and run into this.
Exactly! Thank you!! 👍🏾
Yes! I tried to alter a denim jacket but couldn’t get seams through my machine lol. I had to sew up to the felled seam and skip it then hand sew the flat-felled parts.
I have been able to sew them on my Juki MO 6800 series (industrial). It is amazing. I still go slow as the needles can still break.
Be glad you got the Juki you did. It’s far superior to the other one.
Thank you
The loud shaking is a deal breaker for this girl.
Which did you end up getting?
I bought the Brother serger in 2015, never used it until today. This video helps me feel better about buying it!
Thank you 💕
I’ve had my brother 1034D for about 2 months and I love it!
My 85 year old mother wanted a sewing machine and it was this video that I was able to buy her a Brother in her favourite colour......blue!! I bought it for her for Mother's Day this year. I haven't always been in the financial position to do so but it was so reasonable. Thank you!! xoxo
This is so helpful! Thank you ❤ the Brother is now $279.99, but I'll still be ordering it because we all know prices keep going UP, not DOWN 😬
True unfortunately
Yes please let us know. I’m so sorry you had to go through that with the last machine.
Thank you, thank you!!!! You answered all of my questions. Excellent review!!! Yes, in my opinion, Brother owes you a new machine for demonstrating just how good a serger they have created! Brother's advertisement videos do not even compare! You converted me!!!
I'm so glad it was helpful! 😁
Me too, just ordered one based on this review
I purchased the Brother 1034D in 2016. I previously owned a White Serger for 900.00, and the White serger was fraught with stitching issues. I had this serger serviced many times to no avail.
So I am thrilled beyond words with my Brother 1034 D serger. I have had No problems with the Brother serger, and have stitched many
Outfits with this serger.
You will love the 1034D. The ease of the threading surprised me.
Thank you, have you sewed a coat with it ? Don't you struggle with the absence of free arm ?
This was terrific. You are a great demonstrator with an abundance of enthusiasm.
I love the editing on this!
I have a brother 1034d. I’ve had it for about 5 years and it’s never given me a problem. I’m not a hard core serger but I love it!!
That’s so great to hear! 🥹 Thank you! 💕
Go Janome and you won’t cry.
That’s right. Here in Argentina a simple crochet for repair costs three times over a Singer, Janome or Toyota one.
Excellent! I loved this video, thank you. I am waiting for my Brother serger to arrive. I ordered a 1034DX. Wish me luck as this is my first. I don't think I will ever sew 6 layers but two to three may be in the mix.
You got this! I’m rooting for you.
Wow! I just made my first corset from scratch so I really respect people who make the real deal historical ones.
Almost all metal machines as a rule holdup well sewing thick things.
i second this! i have a white speedylock 534. thang is a beast!
I make my own panties, it takes 5 minutes with the serger lol. I love it for the insides of potholders so they don't unravel with washing.
Purchased Brothers a year ago. Love the easy threading. Had a White server in the past. Agree with you 💯
Thank you, this has been very helpful. I'm in the market for a Serger and trying to figure out which one to save for. I have zero experience with one so basically all of the little nuances you pointed out have been so eye-opening! Love the tips from a pro who can tell me what nit-picky things to look out for haha
Yayyy! I'm so glad it was helpful!! 😁
I really enjoy your comparisons of sewing machines great video thank you 😊 I was actually looking for a serger 🙏
I have that same brother serger and have been very pleased with mine for quite a few years. It's never failed me
Love the long hair, you look beautiful!!! Thank you, I want one, but they're so expensive. I will definitely consider your advice! ❣️God bless and stay safe!! 💕
Thank you!! 😊
I like that “I just don’t know if my wallet agrees”
Queen, how did you know this is EXACTLY the video I needed right now!?!
Yayyy! I'm so glad!! 😁
I sew with many MANY layers. So I am on your team.
I'm so glad I could help! Enjoy your new machine. 🎉
Sponsor her! SPONSOR HER! Luv ya girl!
Thank you for a concise and unbiased review. I literally bought the Brother an hour before seeing your video and so glad I made the right choice. 😊
Thank you so much for this video, I’ve had the brother 1034D for years - it’s way more than 5yrs but I don’t know exactly and I love it. I wasn’t sure if I had to attach a different presser foot to go through lots of layers so it was great to see that I don’t have to. Thank you! 😀
Hi, I had the Brother, just could not get on with it. I now have the Juki, I love, love, love it.
I was beginning to think that mine had an issue because of how loud it is.
my Singer Serger is loud and shaky also
Mine too, and i love night sewing
Now you made me want to try that one even more! 🤦🏾♀️😆
Wow, you certainly can’t beat that 👍🏾
I’m surprised the Juki choked on the 6 layers. I’ve had mine for years and it sews everything and never feels like it’s working hard at all. I’ll have to try sewing more layers and see how it does.
Did you try sewing multiple layers? How did it do?
@@Tyreselynn I did, and it choked similar to the way your test Juki did. That said, I’ve never had a need to put that much fabric through it at once, so it isn’t really a issue for me. I really like the stitch quality and it handles specialty threads and even fine yarn well for decorative stitches. I enjoy your videos and this smack down was very interesting.
This is on time! My bff bought me a brother serger for Christmas. I haven't used it yet. Threading looks intimidating. I do sew in layers
Just cut the threads (close to the thread spools) leaving it threaded. Tie new spools to the still threaded string and pull through! All you will have to through is thread the needle!
@@onesma1729 I haven't taken it out the box. I only read the manual. 🤷🏾♀️🤣🤣
@@Jaded6911 They look intimidating! But aren't to bad to thread, especially if it has the thread lines. 😉
thank you for doing this video. Been looking t invest and you gave me lots to think about.
