Hi Angelina. I'm watching this video 3 years after you posted it. It still helped me with picking a beginner, budget friendly machine for my daughter who is now interested in upcycling some clothes. Your channel is EXACTLY perfect! Thank you for the time you put in to making this video.
I just started tailoring my own clothes and got the Singer heavy duty, I mostly bought it because it was more manly looking (as a 32 year old guy I gotta protect my ego while sewing of course) but the thing performs like mad, it punches through anything I throw at it.
@@howtomakeyourlifeeasier my grandmother and great-grandmother (who took care of me a lot when i was younger) refused to teach me to knit, crochet, or sew.... all things they did, because "boys don't do that" Now i do all three as an "F U" to them....
Singer used to be American made but they have been made in China for a long time now. When I was in high school in 1960 we had little old Singer straight stitch only sewing machines in our sewing classes which were good little work horses. We had 2 machines in clothing 2 classes that did zig zag and only the best students could use those.
I had one of those that I inherited from my grandmother. It’s a treadle one with the nice iron cast table. It would be at least 75 years old now, I believe. Had to leave it behind at my parent’s house as it’s not practical for someone who frequently changes residences. 🙁 I miss it.
I work at a place that sells Singer machines, and I know that a large part of that is the increased demand (people at home making masks) paired with a dysfunctional supply chain (thanks COVID-19). I have a rediculously hard time stocking machines that are less than $1000 as a result
332k views of free advertising. Plus everyone and their dog decided to start a mask business. I can't wait until covid is over and they give the sewing machines back to those of us who need them to work 😂
@@AzazelsWings right? It will be like that 5 minutes when everyone wanted to learn to knit and then realized it was hard, and you could get yarn for absolute pennies!!! 😍😍😍
Lol I've been researching machines all morning and you solved the whole dilemma when you slipped off the free arm and the Singer had all that room I was like, "sold. Singer it is". Thank you so much for the great video without a lot of non-sense.
I appreciate the video. I have the singer 4452 and a brother SE 400 sewing embroidery machine. My brother is my go to machine. My singer is louder and has needed repair more often. Brother has proven the more durable and dependable. I love upcycling, it is the future people.
I'm back into garment making so thought I'd treat myself to a heavy duty Singer. I love it!! It sews almost as well as the 1940's Singer I used to own. The 40's machine had interchangable cams as well, to give you dozens of different fancy stitches. Now that was a heavy duty machine. On par with today's industrials.
I had a kenmore like that! It had stacks of cases w cams. Being new to sewing I hadn’t a clue but I diligently prodded on bc I loved playing w it. Later, my boss gave us a months salary (about $1,000) and I bought a Viking TOL for $850 and my kenmore trade in. Had that machine 45 yrs w only a change of computer card. Those were the days
I started with a Brother machine in the 1990s. I've blown up 4 or 5 of them in the process of perfecting my skills. I finally got a Singer HD which is what I needed for my sewing business.
Thank you for creating this comparison! I chose the Singer 4452 machine because of its claim to work through multiple layers of denim. It has been a great workhorse machine, even if it gets cranky doing any complex denim seams.
I've been going back and forth between these two and because I'm a beginner, the Brother seems so much less intimidating. My partner also wants something he can sew leather with, so you're an awesome resource. Thank you!!
I fix horse blankets on this machine. I also finally saved and saved and bought a Juki Industrial straight stitch for my sewing business. I still use both.
I just love you! I found and then lost this video several months ago. Now that I'm about ready to make a decision, I had to dig around UA-cam and find you again. Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!!!!
I have the singer 4423 and there's also a feed dogs switch, it's on the back of the free arm after you take off the accessory box. It's totally not obvious but it's there!
She doesn’t seem to have watched the videos for the Singer and I think they really matter. The Singer has two thread tensions (both upper and lower) which she could have adjusted to get something she like better for the denim, her needle exploded because just being a 16 doesn’t make it a good needle for denim, the faster a machine is the more issues the wrong needle will cause because drag becomes a bigger factor. I would have used an 18 for the denim test and a no. 20 leather needle for that test. Singers are beasts (I also have a 4423) but they rely on you knowing how your machine works.
@@adbreon ive watched some reviews on the singer 4423 which is mixed but i have my heart set on getting it anyway. Can u tell me how u like urs and are there any problems?
@@meliarackliffe6342 The 4423 is not a beginner machine but its not an industrial machine either. That said, I like mine. I've never had any problems with it but I don't tend to have machine issues in general because I tend to do a lot of fabric/needle/thread swatching before I start projects and that usually keeps things from going off the rails. It has the usual problems that a top loading bobbin system can have (needle strike on the bobbin shuttle casing if the needle isn't seated properly, bobbin bounce) but again, watching all of the videos from Singer and getting to know your machine keeps that from being much of an issue. I wanted a metal frame without buying a European machine and I prefer mechanical machines because I am a garment sewist, not a quilter or embroiderer. It's also much easier to find someone who can fix a Singer than a Brother, at least in my area. My previous machine was a cheap Walmart special Brother that lived way longer than it had a right to. I replaced it because I couldn't find someone to do repairs or cleaning on the machine.
@@meliarackliffe6342I bought this machine it’s great. It does go really fast a bit intimidating at the start. I would have liked it to have a speed switch. It goes through thick things. The trick with thick fabric is to have a fabric at the back to even it up. I think this came with a plastic thing that helps with that and you can pop the needle in it to help you thread the machine. I like I can buy cheap feet for it at spotlight. My bernina a foot is over $100 this one about $20. I have used the heavy duty overlocker too and it was really nice to use, I haven’t bought that yet but found they are not selling them anymore
I love your side by side comparison of these machines. The thicknesses that they both go through is amazing. I'm glad you were using the Teflon foot. It's my favorite accessory when sewing through leather or vinyl. Also, I saw you were using a heavy duty 100/16 needle, but an actual leather needle has a sharper, more 3D diamond shaped head for cutting through non woven materials vs. a standard needle, which is more flat and basically punches through woven fibers. I had an occasion years ago to make a costume almost entirely out of marine grade vinyl and it was tough going, especially when topstitching. I was really struggling until I asked a coworker (I worked at Hancock Fabrics once upon a time) and she suggested I put tissue paper under my project to prevent it sticking. It worked like a charm. Like you, I was having skipped stiches, but adjusting tension and stitch length weren't helping me much. The paper dropped skipped stitches to almost zero, except for the very thickest parts, where I was sewing straps made of the same vinyl over flat fold seams. I ended up hand stitching those few pieces. But tissue paper is a quick and cheap hack for "sticky" material. Also, super jealous of the Fabricator!
I’ve had my Brother sewing machine for probably 25 years and only found the peel off plastic a few months ago which made me howl because I’m very much a peeler offer, they’d just stuck it on so well I didn’t even know it was there 🤣
LOVE this review. I bought the Singer 4452 machine last year and I am quite pleased with it. I've often wondered how many layers of fabric it would sew through. But, don't think I'd ever need to sew ten layers of thick fabric like denim. Glad to know how I can actually do that with my machine, though. However, like you, I appreciate the fact that the Brother machine has a foot which goes up higher as it does on the one in your video, here. Now, that would be another feature I'd love to have on my Singer along with the auto foot - raise you said you would like to have. TYSM for taking time to make this informative video for us. Love your channel. 😻❣😍
Thank you 😊. You don’t know how much confidence you’ve given a boy who doesn’t know how to sew, and how much you’ve taught him. When I have the money to get that I’d get it.
I own a Brother cs6000i. I grew up using a Singer treadle sewing machine and as a novice with electric sewing machines, I was quite rough with it as I was used a full metal sewing machine that did not break no matter what I did (it would be 75 years old now). The Brother sewing machine survived my rough handling pretty well (I might have dropped it once or twice 😅). Bought it in 2012 and still love using it to this day.
I learned to sew on a Kenmore, and then bought a gently used Kenmore in a cabinet. Issued for my two daughters, son, and husband for twenty years, and it served me well. I bought a new one thirteen years ago, and I love it! I never buy the cheapest or most expensive. I have sewed heavy denim, to silk and jersey, and it never lets me down.
I love the singer heavy duty because I'm pretty abusive on my machines and walmart provides a warranty so if you break it you can get another within the year for free. shits lit.
Oh my god... I don't know why i haven't seen this video yet . You're the gem. Really. This video is super duper amazing useful. If i say ton of thank you it's still not enough... So keep my millions thank you per day ... :-) you saved my time , money ,idea projects, and moreeeee... This video and specially you deserve a biggest award.
I LOVE my Singer Heavy Duty that I got last year. But glad I watched to the end. A SAILRITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow! Can't wait to see the review on that. Subscribed!
As a sewing machine repair person... neither machine is HEAVY DUTY...that many layers of denim.... size 18...the tests are not reality if what alot of people try to sew...skipping stitches... wrong needle for fabric... change needle..sewing leather.... USE A LEATHER NEEDLE...
@@winebox ....hi...I am gonna ask alot of questions...is your sewing a hobby maybe going to turn into a business? do you sew all different weights of fabrics upholstery, silk, cotton, denim? do you sew alot or any knits/stretch fabrics? does MOM or GRANDMOTHER have an old metal machine anywhere? Personally, i have all older Singer machines. a Featherweight 221, its older sister 301 and a 401...
I've had my Singer 4432 for a few years now and it has been amazing. I just got a Brother SE630 sewing and embroidery machine but I will be keeping my Singer as well because it is so good at heavy duty stuff (I do sew ballistic nylon and tubular webbing). I still enjoyed watching this video though even though I'm pretty late to the party! Oh, and I'm a plastic Leave -r-On-r.
I was watching several reviews and actual sewing machines and I liked yours the best because you showed 1. items that come with the machine and what they look like; 2. the demo with thick layer of fabric; 3. showing the little mistake of not using proper needle for thick fabric and lowering feed dog when using leather. Presentation was very very good. 3 Thumbs up!
I worked in a sewing factory, those machines were so cool, they had automatic cut off and you could control the footlift with your knee!! I loved them and the sergers were glorious!!
When I sewed on them I could fly!! Some of them were tacking machines, I tacked my right thumb in one of those but I ran buttonhole machines, button machines, sergers, labeler, I also inspected. So I got a lot of experience with sewing machines....
Loved your video.A quick tip when you are sewing stretch knits use a stretch needle lengthen the stitch length and use a very narrow zig zag or lightning style stitch. I had a singer for 18 years it burned out my Mama had one she used for 50 years. I use a Brother now. Its ok a lot of bells and whistles. But I am getting old and set in my ways old dog new tricks etc. keep movin and groovin and God bless you.
My son just bought me a heavy duty singer for Christmas and I happened across your video. Although it is 2 years old, I really enjoyed your demonstration of both machines. I’ve subscribed and I’m definitely looking forward to more sewing content. ✨🌟✨
I picked up one that looks like that one with the Sunbeam name on it from the dollar store for 4.99. I couldn't resist and thought it might be good for a power outage. You have motivated me to open the box and try it. TFS
Thank you so much for doing this comparison! I love Brother machines and this just solidified the fact that I want a Brother heavy duty machine. You ROCK!
I’m 4yrs late but thinking the same thing. I actually wanted the singer for the speed. But I like what the Brother is doing in this vid. And it’s cheaper to buy. I think I’m leaning towards that now. But they both did well. The brother handles denim better. The singer handled leather better.
LOVE your charisma, sistah! ❤️ I am a beginner, so don’t listen to me BUT-it is incredibly smooth, The pedal provides very fine control of the speed range, from a snails pace to a whopping 1100 stitches per minute!
I love that you took the time to test both machines. I think that in both cases the thread tension, the needle and the feet used made the difference. I agree that the results were a bit surprising. Though I have a preference for Singer, Brother has stepped up their game "big time". What I DO NOT like from both machines and more modern machines in general is the shortness of the arm, what make them both for domestic purpose. Anytime you have a big project, you start wondering whether you should have a "beast" similar to the one you just acquired or not. The "beast" looks really good and I cannot wait for your reviews.
I have a brother se-420 and I love it. It does everything including embroidery option too. It’s easy to use and does good stitches and can go through a lot of fabric layers. I quilt so I know.
BlueprintDIY I love it. They have a bunch of Se-series but they are basically the same minus few upgrades on the newer models. But it sews through a lot of layers. I love the embroidery option and you can hook the machine up to your Computer to download images to embroider onto your fabric. It’s super easy to use too so it’s a beginner machine for sure. Thanks for showing these as I’m always looking for more machines.
I have the singer heavy duty I got it off a Facebook marketplace several years ago. It was like brand new as the previous owners never used it. I paid $100 for it but I learned on it and still use it it’s definitely worth the money. I’m interested in getting the singer heavy duty serger next. It sews all my horse equipment I make.
I have been sewing on my singer quantom stylist for ten years now and she's begging for a break.....so I most definitely will be buying the heavy duty singer.....all I need at this stage is simple but powerful ......looks good for my bag making !! Thanks !!!
My DIL just bought a heavy duty Singer which I recently gave her a little help with. I think it's a good machine and believe that it handles thick layers better than the Singer model I have - but I have to admit that I've only used a number fourteen so far on mine - which conjures up thoughts of damage each time I go over seam crossings even of the quilting-quality cotton I use. It's okay because I know I won't - as most home sewists - ever need to go through eight or more laters of denim or leather even as it's good to know that a machine has that kind of power. I don't know that either I or she will ever need to sew anything at 1100 stitchers per minute as I have found that sewing slower gives one a lot of control over the stitching and the fabrics and have found that almost all of the experts I've watched recommend that that's what you should do. However, if you're doing production sewing than that's a different story. I also like the fuller area metal plate as I often wish my little pretty model had a much wider area for my magnetic stitch guide to adhere to. I would very much like more than the twenty-three decorative stitches I now have but don't use much anyway - so I can live without them. I think for the prices - each is a really good buy. Thanks for the comparison - a good watch!! Best and stay safe wishes to you and yours!
I agree with the slower-is-better-control mantra. I did production garment sewing for a couple years and the only time speed was super useful is when you have fold guide or such so you barely need to do anything but make sure it feeds clean. Then you can stand on the foot pedal and run 1000 peices. Now it is mostly making me and friends things that I want the best quality over quantity.
I sew and lots of denim! 💙I have literally lost count of the machines I've had in the last 20 years. I've bought, people gave me.🤦🏾♀️😊 Anyway, I bought more new Singer's than any other brand. My last one. The heavy duty. I forget which one, #? I haven't used it in a while , since I threw my timing off. After using it less than a year. It's collecting dust. My latest is the Brothers Strong & Tough ,that you are using!!!💛💛💛👍🏾I've had it November a year! I absolutely love it😊👍🏾💛I use it a lot , mostly denim . I'm kinda scared to go through that many layers though.👀 I like to sew fast with all the lovely stitches! And I break a lot of 16, 18 needles !🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️I'm doing something wrong. I just keep lots on hand.😉👍🏾💯 Thanks for the comparison! Really enjoyed the video! 😊👍🏾
Good morning, I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel... it was meant to be. I just purchased a used Singer 4411, heavy duty machine. She's only been in my possession for a week, so we are becoming acquainted. My work horse is a Singer model 237. My sister and I, together, purchased her in 1971 at an actual Singer store in a mall... on credit! When we broke up housekeeping, in 1973, together, she got the 1971 Chevy Vega (also purchased together) She got the car (which she traded in) and I kept the sewing machine. I'm still using her! Proper maintenance goes a long way!
Great review. Beginner machines are great, especially if your not sure you will like sewing. But sometimes when an inexpensive machine doesn't perform as expected and is one challenge after another to finish a project it makes sewing more frustrating than joyful. Buy the best quality you can afford while looking for it on sale!
I'm a plastic "leaver- oner," myself. When it naturally comes up on it's own after use - that's when I remove the plastic. (If it interferes with the operation of my product, then I go ahead and remove it.) That way, the plastic "cover" helps keep the product it's on free from smudges/fingerprints, etc. TY for posting this video.
Also, using denim needles and leather needles works alot better for both machines I'm sure. HLX5 needles also work well but the cloth specific needles are always the best way to go. Especially stretch needles for that stretchy fabric
Angelina I'm so happy to have found your channe.l I hold on to Old clothing and I wanted to alter them. So thank you thank you thank you and I love your smile your style and everything. I bought a lambskin leather coat for $4 years ago and I'm praying that I didn't throw it away.
best budget machine ever.. Kenmore late 60's early 70's 158.17010 for about I want to say around $60-70 from a sewing machine shop.. came with cams, button holler, and sews through anything.. I love this machine. all metal and has been tested by time.. she is around my age... and is still sewing well.. I also must say for those who are wondering or for those who are just starting out, just because a sewing machine can sew through 8 layers of this or that does not mean it should. These are domestic machines for domestic work or quilting. If you have projects that need 8 or more layers of this or that then an industrial machine is what you are looking for.. but you need to learn to sew before you get one of those bad boys.
Love, love, love my Kenmore 385.18330 but really need a backup machine so I don't need to change setups all the time. Brother ST371hd has had me hooked for awhile. I only use 5-7 stitches so I don't need 100+. Wanted a manual because that's what I had since childhood and got pretty good at fixing them myself. One step buttonholer was high on my list as well as a descent price. I sewed most of my school clothes and still sewing as a retired grandma. That's a lot of years!!! Your video was fair although I'd never use a 14 needle on knits --- stretch or jersey needle depending on the machine. I do use denim and leather needles then again I do pound layers with a hammer on concrete to soften them up. As you said, "needles DO matter". Once again, thank you for the fair testing as I'm now getting the brother.
Sylvia, I have pounded denim with a hammer on my garage floor too! I am constantly changing needles, always when starting a new project. I sewed on an old machine that had been converted to electric when I started sewing at 8 yrs. old. Used that until I purchased my own. Like you I made most of my clothes and lots of things for my daughter and grandkids. Don't sew as much now. I have the first free arm that Sears put out, all metal and I love it. Never have and never will loan out my sewing machine. I had 2 Singers and never could get the tension right on either.
I have the Singer 4411, which is very much the same with fewer stitches. I've used it for years without any issues, and I routinely use if for jeans and heavy stuff, usually faster than I ought to. Why did I choose this model? For the very good reason that it's battleship grey and seemed like the one made for boys (OK, maybe this was a stupid reason, but it turned out to be the right one for me).
I was debating between the singer and the brother. I will get the brother. You are an amazing teacher. I love your sewing machine reviews . I love the sew along video on the butterick blouse. I learned a lot from that video.
Thank you so much for this review. It was exactly what I needed for these specific models. Very thorough, and every time I asked you a question through the screen lol, it was like you heard me and answered. Again, thank you! 🖤
Started watching because I'm looking for a new sewing machine for my wife. The presentation is excellent, and information top-notch, but even Cable, with their multi-million dollar budgets don't have that many commercials per minute of program.
Mike, why don't you ASK your wife which machine SHE would prefer? That way she could choose it herself & not blame you if what you pick out is not to her taste? Guys, this goes for engagement/wedding bands, etc. Please ASK first. Just saying.... Johanna.
Thank you! Didn’t even know I needed a new sewing machine - but now I do😂🤪🤩 I have had the same machine for 7-8 years (Swedish brand Husqvarna Viking), and it’s still working well. I really like it - but it would definitely want a new friend😂
Thank you so much for this review. Now, I need to search for a retail store to get either one of these babies here in Lagos, Nigeria. Thank you so much. 🥰
Angelina, I really enjoyed your comparison video, especially showing the buttonholes. Between my sister and I (we moved in together after her husband passed) we have 6 sewing machines AND NONE OF THEM HAVE AN AUTO BUTTONHOLE MAKER-hate that dial buttonhole stitch!!! Thank you for sharing!!! Judy
I just bought a pfaff passport a few years before covid and just learnt to use the buttonhole OMG 😳 it was amazing. Put the button in it knew what size and pressed the button and it did it all automatically. You tube video luckily helped me do this. Love you tube
Hi I just bought that Brother-ST371HD right after I watched your review , I am retired Vet. I'm N Miami Fla. Long story short about 3 years ago I had a stroke lost a lot of weight so all my clothes are very baggy so I said I throwing them away I was just going to Sewing then up 😊😊😊
Rick, good that you did. You will need an extended warranty on this Singer. These Singer HD models all break down soon enough. You should have gone for an Elna. They live up to their famous reputation for reliability & endurance. I got the Elna HD1000. Best HD ever. Will last a lifetime! That's Elna. Beautiful machines. I will NEVER need look to another make for my home sewing. I am a seamstress now for 38 yrs. I owned many other machines in my time, but Elnas are the smoothest. Just beautiful machines! They won't break down on you, are affordable & will be with you forever!
@@rickmandigo6673 Rick, they were est in Switzerland in 1934. They are now a parent co of Janome. They are still designed in Switzerland. They are sturdy & never break down. Robust & reliable. They are actually very well known to the sewing world, worldwide.
I have a singer facilita 2868 past down from my grandma it's been sitting in the corner for years until a few days ago I took it down and cleaned it up was disappointed at first because it wouldn't catch the bobbin at all the timing was way off but I watched a lot of video and finally got it working perfectly! Can't wait to start my sewing journey
I have been wanting a new sewing machine for a while now. Thanks for the info on both of these machines. I think you have helped me to make up my mind.
Your hair is so, so fabulous. I sleep in rollers to get curly hair! Thank you for this comparison video. I have 3 machines, but I'm thinking of getting that Brother for stitching thru layers...from Grandma Bunny--not the dumbest blonde in Arizona! God bless you - you have been a blessing.
In the the search for a new sewing machine i found you and i do glad i did. I think your a wonderful person☺️ and you have helped me pick my sewing machine. I she will get the Brothers heavy duty sewing machine.
I love my Sailrite machine. The walking foot helps for thick layers. It is also for welt in the foot. You can purchase a larger welt foot from them. This is great for making furniture cushions, pet beds, etc.. If your looking to save money, buy a cone thread stand, and use cone thread. Sailrite has videos on how to make different things.
My only complaint about the Sailright is lack of a triple zigzag, it's normal zigzag/straight stitch only which was a deal breaker. That's an issue with tompson copies generally though. If someone would make a tompson clone with a triple zigzag sell a lot of them even if was at the expense of having a normal zigzag. It would be the perfect inexpensive (relatively) machine for sewing ripstop sailcloth.
@@atomicskull6405 I've always sewed commercial furniture, not clothing. I hope you can find the right machine for your purpose. I have to say for a home machine it's not bad for lighter weight commercial materials. I don't think it has enough presser for the heavy weight leather that i love to sew. Sometimes you have to adjust the pressure on one side of the 2 leathers for it to come even with each other. This pressure foot can't handle the resistance of the heavy, thick leather. It is pretty tough otherwise.
So when you have a thicker material, you change the needle size too. There are so many things to know... (T--T) Does these machines come with those different size needles?
Jacinth Sabado yes. It’s very important to use the right size needles. It will depend on the thickness and/or type of material u are sewing. If you use the wrong one it will either break or not sew correctly. There are charts, and most manuals, will tell you the appropriate size needle to use.
@@lianefleury6377 not only this, but I learned that you have to change also the thread acordly to the thickness of the fabric and the large of stitch and velocity. 100% polyester for 3mm tickeness and Jean's thread for more. More tickeness more slowly velocity and larger stitches. Sorry my english is a work in progress
I use metal bobbins in my Singer 4452 and 4423 machines. I think they jump around less than the plastic bobbins. I have had the 4423's for years and really put them to the test, still going strong! I do like the color as it looks more industrial, but the white color machine is nicer looking in a sewing room. I keep my 4423 in my car for sewing onsite. PS- plastic is OFF for me too! 👍🏼
I got the singer 4452 because it's so easy to use a caveman can do it. I'm a security guard (male) & I have to get patches onto my uniform & maintain them. It saves a lot of time & money. It'll also do leather. Only complaint is some promised accessories were missing, but it's that model exactly. My former girlfriend (RIP) had one of those upscale brother machines, impossible to use & very intimidating. Plus my mom has a vintage singer that literally even shows sparks through the vents. All high strength steel. Only change I would want is that the whole machine & bobbins be steel not plastic even though it's tough as nails.
2 minutes into the video and I'm a new subscriber! I'm enjoying the energy and information already. Briefly seeing all the positivity in the comments here is heartwarming. Congratulations on 106K subscribers! Blessed be xo
The machine i have now is an old Kenmore 385 series which I got when I agreed to sew skating outfits. Now she's not bottom of the line but not top. At the time I needed a stretch stitch, one step buttonhole and affordable. She is still going strong and is my baby. Now I have been looking for a backup machine so I can have 2 different setups. These are the two machines that I've been wrestling with. The brother is so much l like my Kenmore and the singer ..... well, has a larger free arm area underneath and that metal plate which is good since I use magnetic seam guides. During the lock downs both machines were impossible to get and now prices have gone up. Still can't make up my mind but your review helps. Thank you.
Ale, unfortunately this Singer won't last too long without breakdowns. It is internally all plastic, gears plastic, etc, which is why it is cheap. The Singer brand went down the tube some 40 years ago. All machines run good while new, but time is the best test for it. I bought an Elna HD1000 & it's the best I've ever had. Elna machines are known for their longevity. I expect it to last forever. Elnas are the best, & affordable too. Try them!
johanna thank you for the insightful info!! I looked into Elna machines and I am impressed! Im a sewing newbie, so this is the first time I hear about Elna machines! Thank you!!!! I will definitely purchase one once this beauty breaks down on me.
I purchased a baby lock spent too much. All local Walmart's were out of the cheaper ones. But I live her, been playing with her everyday. I'm new to sewing but looking forward to the learning experience.
Babylocks are greatly overrated AND overpriced. I had one b4. Absolute JUNK. Never worked properly & then knobs dropped off. Expensive RUBBISH! Never again Juki!!!!
Could you let us know how these do when sewing over the bumps on side seams of denim jeans? Especially the flat felled seams. This is where machines usually show what they are made of. Thank you.
They do fine. If my 4452 didn't do a great job I would have sent it back for a refund. I have machines that do what the 4452 can do just not in one machine like the 4452. I love it. Now no one could pry it out of my hands. I have all the optional accessories as well.
I came across your vids in the process of searching for what was a good machine for my needs. My old dependable finally died after many years of service. I can’t thank you enough for the detailed explanations, stated so all can understand. You’re the best and I am hooked.
Hahah yessss, everytime that I have to sew more than 3 layers my heartbeat goes up as the machine keeps going haha But I have a singer tradition it's pretty basic
I have both the singer 4452 and 4411- the best machine I have owned. There is a switch behind when you take off the the section for the free arm that allows you to drop the feed dogs
Frankly, I'm impressed with both of these machines. I was worried the Singer couldn't handle leather. Period. What an eye opener. I really want a Sailrite too. :) Thanks for the review!
Nice review! Hoping you will update us on how you STILL like using the Brother ST371HD. I'm finding bad reviews about thread breaking and wondering if people aren't threading the machine correctly or not adjusting the tension properly. Looking forward to hearing from you. So very much want to purchase this machine, but in the process of doing my homework. Thanks!
Hi Angelina. I'm watching this video 3 years after you posted it. It still helped me with picking a beginner, budget friendly machine for my daughter who is now interested in upcycling some clothes. Your channel is EXACTLY perfect! Thank you for the time you put in to making this video.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much!!
Which one did you choose and how did she like the one you chose?
I picked a Brother Strong and Tough for her. She’s still in the learning phase. It is serving her well.
@@dianarosenberg5088 , thank you!!
I just started tailoring my own clothes and got the Singer heavy duty, I mostly bought it because it was more manly looking (as a 32 year old guy I gotta protect my ego while sewing of course) but the thing performs like mad, it punches through anything I throw at it.
Yes, it's the amazing and I agree that the square shape and color make it more manly.
I went with the singer because my grandmother had singers and i needed to replace the singer my ex wife stole when she left.
sewing is so technical, I really don't understand why is it considered to be "femine hobby" :D
@@howtomakeyourlifeeasier my grandmother and great-grandmother (who took care of me a lot when i was younger) refused to teach me to knit, crochet, or sew.... all things they did, because "boys don't do that"
Now i do all three as an "F U" to them....
Mine gave up after a month of heavy sewing. I sew with denim and sew typical jean seams.
I think it is awesome you are doing reviews of budget minded machines. Far to often the only things you see reviewed are the 1000$ and up machines.
I have an old school heavy duty Singer (metal, no plastic) and it is a workhorse.
Yes, those are the best!
Those are what I grew up on, and I have over 3 of those machines.
@@auntmayme8119 lol I've got 8 of them
This was posted only 10 months ago and both machines have gone up more or less around $80. Remarkable.
I work at a place that sells Singer machines, and I know that a large part of that is the increased demand (people at home making masks) paired with a dysfunctional supply chain (thanks COVID-19). I have a rediculously hard time stocking machines that are less than $1000 as a result

@@ItsViolaRose on the upside, in a few months we'll all be able to buy barely used second hand machines 😀 lol
So glad to help!
God bless you Angelina 🙏🏾 I am ready for a heavy duty sewing machine and this video helps a lot
Garment? Are you making shapewear? I currently make shapewear and need help finding the best machine
I was sold at 8 layers of leather🫢🫣& perfect Lyra fabric stitching....what 🤩...I'm buying that singer machine. I'm sold...thank you soooo much 🙏🏾🙌🏾❤️.
I started with a Brother machine in the 1990s. I've blown up 4 or 5 of them in the process of perfecting my skills. I finally got a Singer HD which is what I needed for my sewing business.
This is the kind of real world review that makes sense.
We bought a highly rated budget machine that began to struggle with folded fabric.
Buy the walking presser foot for more power . I have a Singer 4423 and sews many layers of denim with no problem. I love my Singer ❤️
I bought my singer 4423 few months ago and this machine surprises me every time I use it. I'm falling in love with it (her 😉)!
Have you tried a heavy weight/industrial thread?
I'm new to sewing. You said you can sew many layers? How do you get the pressure foot high enough?
I was rooting for Brother! All of my machines are Brothers.😀
I wish she used different threads. I got confused at some point but do you think the brother was better?

All my homeboys are brothers too.lol
@@artaxerxes2363 great sense of humor. That's hilarious!
@@adbreon thanks, will definitely go for this machine...
Thanks so much for the helpful tips!!
I’ve had my Brother sewing machine for probably 25 years and only found the peel off plastic a few months ago which made me howl because I’m very much a peeler offer, they’d just stuck it on so well I didn’t even know it was there 🤣
😆 Exactly! It's so hard to see.
Love this
LOVE this review.
Yayyy! I'm so glad it was helpful!! 😁
I’m new to sewing aside from 1 button 9 years ago. I was told that this was the goto channel for a beginner to become proficient.
I love the singer heavy duty because I'm pretty abusive on my machines and walmart provides a warranty so if you break it you can get another within the year for free. shits lit.
I leave plastic on as long as possible. It’s not noticeable and keeps what it’s covering nice longer. I remove it when it starts curling.

Which one will recommend in a budget ?
And a stretch needle for knits. Needles DO matter.
Maura Jane OBrien What machine would you recommend? I usually buy used.
Also use a smaller needle for delicate than a 14.
Thanks so much!! 😁 I appreciate that!
I agree with keeping the “oopsies” in the video! Great for learning.
I worked in a sewing factory, those machines were so cool, they had automatic cut off and you could control the footlift with your knee!! I loved them and the sergers were glorious!!
A sewing machine factory, WOW!
Great tip! Thanks so much!! 😁
Also with knits you must use either the Knit foot, or the Walking foot. Stretch needle of course too.
I own the singer heavy duty. Same machine. I love it! I do so much with it. Best investment for me
That's the one I'm leaning towards!
Brother, I have always been a brother fan. I have a brother regular sewing machine and a brother embroidery machine.
My son just bought me a heavy duty singer for Christmas and I happened across your video. Although it is 2 years old, I really enjoyed your demonstration of both machines. I’ve subscribed and I’m definitely looking forward to more sewing content. ✨🌟✨
Welcome to the BlueprintDIY family! 🤗
Literally subbed :11 in. Something about your energy is effusive sis. LOVE!
You ROCK!
Thank you!! 😊
I agree completely! I wish the arm was longer. I can't wait to get to work on the new one!
Always been Singer in my house, growing up and now my own work crew 👍
I have a brother se-420 and I love it. It does everything including embroidery option too. It’s easy to use and does good stitches and can go through a lot of fabric layers. I quilt so I know.
That sounds like an awesome machine!
I really like your videos! I think you do a great job of informing folks about sewing, and your videos are enjoyable to watch!
Maybe use contrasting thread next time? Like Red or Orange, so it’s easier for viewers like me to see. Thank you.
That’s such a great deal! I’m glad you’re getting so much use out of it.
I'm just learning and honestly won't be able to go fast for a long time. It's quite intimidating.
I just keep lots on hand.😉👍🏾💯
Thanks for the comparison! Really enjoyed the video! 😊👍🏾
I learned to sew on vintage machine (newly electric made and the pedal/trundle sewing machines)
Oh wow! This is very new for me!
Yes, that's one amazing sewing machine!

Thanks for the tips!
Angelina I'm so happy to have found your channe.l I hold on to Old clothing and I wanted to alter them. So thank you thank you thank you and I love your smile your style and everything.
I bought a lambskin leather coat for $4 years ago and I'm praying that I didn't throw it away.
mine is from lidl! Off brand, cheap and still working great after 10 years...
best budget machine ever..
Great review. My good friend got the Brother last year because she sews leather. She loves it.
Just subscribed.
Thank you!! 😊 Welcome to the BlueprintDIY family! 🤗💕 Yes, this Brother is awesome.
Which would you choose if you could only choose one?
The Brother
I've watched this and I fell in love with Brothers
Yayyy! I'm so glad it was helpful! 🤗
KEEP the made in Sweden Viking. You can get a new one for additional features, but you won't get the quality.
That’s a great machine I bought one and it sewed through heavy woollen blankets when I was sewing kangaroo pouches like butter
Thank you so much for this review. Now, I need to search for a retail store to get either one of these babies here in Lagos, Nigeria.

Hi I just bought that Brother-ST371HD right after I watched your review , I am retired Vet. I'm N Miami Fla. Long story short about 3 years ago I had a stroke lost a lot of weight so all my clothes are very baggy so I said I throwing them away I was just going to Sewing then up 😊😊😊
Congrats on the new machine! Happy sewing!

Yayyy, I’m so happy for you!
Omg how did I not find your Chanel sooner!!! This is the review I needed!!
Today I bought brother machine which you describe and its very helpful for me.thank you 🙏
I have been wanting a new sewing machine for a while now. Thanks for the info on both of these machines. I think you have helped me to make up my mind.
Yayyy! I'm so glad!! 😁
Which did you choose?
Your hair is so, so fabulous. I sleep in rollers to get curly hair! Thank you for this comparison video. I have 3 machines, but I'm thinking of getting that Brother for stitching thru layers...from Grandma Bunny--not the dumbest blonde in Arizona! God bless you - you have been a blessing.
Thanks so much Grandma Bunny! 😁 It's definitely great for getting through a lot of layers. 👍🏽
In the the search for a new sewing machine i found you and i do glad i did. I think your a wonderful person☺️ and you have helped me pick my sewing machine. I she will get the Brothers heavy duty sewing machine.
Glad to help! 😊
When you start sewing many layers you should use a Jean a majig or two needle cases to bring up the back of the presser foot. Makes it easier
The singer also comes with one.
Yes, also known as a jumper jumper
@@johanna5688this jumper also came with a hole in it which you can put the needle in and it makes it easy to pop the needle in the machine
I have a Singer 4423 that I regularly use to hem jeans. It's been fantastic for that purpose.
Nice job on testing the durability on both machines. I'm a singer girl. 🌹💖
So when you have a thicker material, you change the needle size too. There are so many things to know... (T--T) Does these machines come with those different size needles?
They both came with different size needles, but that's not always the case with every new sewing machine.
I see, thank you
Jacinth Sabado yes.
I have the brother and it came with like 6 different needles and 6 or 7 different feet
I just purchased Janome 2212, thank you for your video it was very, very helpful.
I absolutely love that you have a sewing machine in your car at all times! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks so much!! 😁 Welcome to the BlueprintDIY family! 🤗💕 Yes, I love this community so much. They keep me so encouraged!
What’s a good sewing machine for vision impaired/low vision? Thank you so much for your YT DiY❤️👍👌
Great video. Had to do some digging to figure out where the different machines were made. Would be great to add that to your video comparisons. 😀
Thank you.
I have the singer heavy duty and I LOVE IT!!! It’s a monster!!!
I’m so glad it was helpful! 💕
me getting increasingly nervous everytime she goes up in layers of either denim or leather 📈📉📈📉📈
😆
Hahah yessss, everytime that I have to sew more than 3 layers my heartbeat goes up as the machine keeps going haha But I have a singer tradition it's pretty basic
I have both the singer 4452 and 4411- the best machine I have owned. There is a switch behind when you take off the the section for the free arm that allows you to drop the feed dogs
Hi, Im just curious if the 4411 still good after a year? I want to get one. Thanks
@@jasminen4875 oh yes- it is. I've had mine for over 5 years. Best machine I've owned.
Excellent review!! This was very thorough and hands on informative.
Frankly, I'm impressed with both of these machines. I was worried the Singer couldn't handle leather. Period. What an eye opener. I really want a Sailrite too. :)
Thanks for the review!
Thanks!
This was a very good video. Thanks for making this. I'm going with the Brother for sure.
