Steve Vai - "30 years of the Ibanez JEM"

  • Hey folks, Steve here.
It’s stunning to me that the Jem is celebrating 30 successful years of it’s life. It’s quite an honor for both myself and Ibanez. Who would have thunk that a dayglo skinned guitar with a hand holding monkey grip would have such legs!
Still, to this day when I pick up my Jem I feel that school boy excitement as my hands caress it and it speaks to me the resonating vocabulary of my inner secrets.

Why are so many Luthiers meth heads? I personally knew a legit luthier who would make his own meth pipes with a glass tube at a friends house. He looked and acted alot like this guy.

True, Timur, but I think Steve had more technical input that made it's way to being standard on guitars. I'd even throw Korn in there for bring seven strings back to the public after the Universe flopped, and breaking enough headstocks off to get the volute standard.

Despond If I got a Ibanez, I'd go the hollow body route. Or, I'd go with that type of look. I never really liked the Gem look. I'm not a big fan of 80's looking guitars. Nor, do I like "Metal" looking guitars. The only metal guitar that I sort of like is Hetfields guitar. But, I wouldn't buy one. It just looks right with him. I'm more of a Fender/Gibson person. I like guitars that look classic. I'm not saying I wouldn't own a metal guitar. I just wouldn't buy it.

I am strongly against going for specific brand because of anithing but visual look ... Look is my main priority about guitars ( I have glossy white jackson - js11 .. because is simply freaking beautiful and at the same time fairly afortable ) you can make ENY kind of modifications on any kind of guitar : you can put humbuckers on singlecoil guitar ; you can make humbucker guitar spit coil ; you can add more switches for what ever you want - kill switches , volume switches for separate pickups ext. ; ... and basically after all , gear does not matter at all ..

Mrnicguy00 I played a higher end Jem at guitar center with gold hardware and I believe it was $2000? Not trying to sound biased but holy shit that guitar was sweet. Something I never experienced before was how sensitive it was to noise, in a good way. I plugged it in and messed around with plucking different notes, squealing, bending and it was like a Mercedes Benz. You barely barely play a note and you hear it, you try screaming it and it screamed the note or squealed the note. It was effortless. I wished to God I had bought that one because everything was just so so sensitive. Would have made me a better musician over time. That was about 5 years ago and it's going to be my next guitar whenever that is. Don't listen to the guy that says Ibanez are junk. I have an inexpensive $400 ibanez with a Floyd rose and it stays in tune. I think some people just don't know how things work. That specific guitar by the way has Steve's Gravity Storm pickups too.

    • @tmeo9712
      @tmeo9712 5 років тому

No such thing as a high end Jem. They are all pretty much junky guitars, with components that play no different than the 1987 RG550. In fact, add a monkey grip and a lion's claw tremolo and the RG550 is even FASTER. Th RG550 has a THINNER neck than the Jem. Having owned over 40 Jems over the years, including the EVO, DNA and all others before and after, I can clearly say that none compare to even a bargain Paul Reed Smith in quality, craftsmanship or components. They are cool to look at, innovative for the time (even today), but more show than quality. They have lasted 31 years, but so has the RG550. I would definitely say that by adding the latest DiMarzio's to any RG550, digging out the tremolo, you have a stellar - and arguably FASTER guitar than any Jem. The woods are awful and cheap so the tone is all in the electronics and not the woods. Resonance comes from turning them to "11" and adding reverb and gain.

Steve Vai is the reason I play guitar today (30+ years later). I wanted to play guitar as a kid but seeing Crossroads and that showdown at the end placed a burning fire in me that has never subsided.
I have 13 Ibanez guitars (and one that may rest in peace). I'm sure I'll have a few more by the end of the year (addiction is a funny thing).
I'd say Steve succeeded spectacularly in his partnership with Ibanez and is still my favorite guitarist. I saw him in the 80s/90s with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake (Kansas City). It was like winning the lottery as a kid.

Satch is more well-known for being Kirk Hammett's teacher. Joe says that each guitarist has to curate his own sound. He has high praise for Kirk. As for Vai vs. Satch, I would say that Vai plays faster and Satch is more lyrical. Chrome Boy is a better sounding guitar than Vai's Jem.

She'd been there for 30 years. Nancy is my old neighbor from Bensalem/Philly and she said Steve is just the nicest guy and had the longest fingers and in no way ever acted like a rock star. Eh, I wouldn't say most progressive. They've been doing the same thing for a long time. They're fine guitars but there are a lot of brands that are HEAVILY outshining them with real innovation. Mayones, Aristides, Kiesel, Strandberg, Ormsby. These guys have redefined guitar in the last decade.
Ibanez has actually lost a few highly respected artists recently because of their unwillingness to change. Tosin Abasi is one of the biggest names in guitar and he dropped them and started his own company because they weren't willing to change .

I asked him what he needed that the Squire didn't offer. His list of things he needed out of a guitar was the same that Steve Vai listed off in this. As soon as he was done telling me what it was he felt his was missing I immediately told what you need is a Jem. His response was what's that? That's when I played him a video of Steve Vai playing Tender Surrender at the TEC Awards in 2012. He didn't speak for about a minute after the video was over.

I remember when I started as a worship leader I was really concerned as to how my guitar tones would blend in and how my presentation would less be a performance and be more of a devotion. And that's when my first guitar teacher introduced me to Steve Vai's philosophy and teaching methods and I was just amazed the way he did it. And so for a perfect example would be the analogy of the bed at home and that of other places he mentioned. There is always be a hype about the ergonomics, tonality or sturdiness but it is always a set of specifications that is made for an individual to bring out greatness. I guess it is all about where you "feel like home" as Slash defines it in relation to his Les Paul signature.

*Mr. Steve Vai*, it's unlikely you'd read this, but while the JEM is a great piece of work as a player's guitar and workhorse, would you be able to do something for the Iceman?... I think it's one of the most overlooked and underappreciated models, while it's one of the iconic ones that has faded quite a bit. And I think Ibanez has pretty much neglected it in favor of all the "superstrat"-type guitars, being the RGs and JEMs. Which obviously wasn't a bad choice, but it has seemed to damage the Iceman which became like a niche in the "X series", the sort of more "extreme" outcast models that aren't for everyone.
Today it seems that it's not even produced anymore, not as a non-artist model anyway. Seriously, what happened to the Iceman? If you look on the Ibanez-website, you don't really see it.
And I don't know if perhaps they have plans to revive it next year or something, but it seems like they just put it on ice for now. ha *(ba-dum-tss)*
But I love it, and there are other people who love the model. One of my first good quality guitars about 15 years ago was the IC300. I still have it and I still think it plays and sounds great. - I then got an ICT700, which is basically a modernized version (I'm not gonna go through the specs) but while I thought it would be an improvement in many aspects, it actually came out pretty disappointing in terms of playing and feeling it. - Then they perhaps made one or two more versions and now it seems to have disappeared.
I actually think the Iceman could and should be more like one of Ibanez their flagship models, parallel to the JEM or RG, perhaps more as a rhythm type of guitar (even though I'm personally not just that, and Sam Totman seems to like his with Floyds and all). - But it's a shame what has happened to it and it deserves better. You and I both know Ibanez can do so much more with it.
I don't know where I'm going with this. I don't think you would care much about this particular model, because it's not your JEM. *(ba-dum-tss)* - But if you could put in a word with Ibanez to give it a little love... if you believe in it, that is... that would probably help a lot. - There needs to be a spark, a kick-start, and I'm trying my best here but that's about as much as I can do.
Regardless of anything; Thanks for your unique music, inspiring passion, and generous sharing of experience and knowledge.

Insightful, brilliant at this craft, and definitely spiritual. Older interviews from the 80's did not showcase his true brilliance, because he was so young back then and in a scene that was honestly very shallow and unartistic at the time. 80's hair metal is very popular again nowadays, but believe me when I say back then people grew sick of it after a decade. That's why grunge took hold as fast as it did. That aside, it's clear that Steve grew into a very wise and deep individual, and of course was always one of the most talented of his generation of guitarists, which is saying something!

I've totally suggested the wrong one!Type in 'Carried Away etc (Zappa,Vai inspired guitar solos)Pt 2'They have backing tracks I've written. The first has what I think is a sweet intro and baseline that just begs for pretty melodies to be played over it and then I do the harmonic minor jam and I'm clearly warmed up by then cos I end up just throwing lines here there and everywhere.Would love to know what you think whoever listens to it?

The last statement was honest but also a little surprising to hear.
I did think about whether they were aware of how far guitar design has evolved since the days of the JEM. It's funny because once somethings established its hard to convince other people the new stuff might be superior in any way.
But honestly, if you're a true guitar nut maybe don't go for your standard les Paul's, Strats, or even JEM's. You should know more modern shapes and development are not just on par, but better in so many ways that get overlooked because we still romanticize the older shapes and brands. Same thing could be said of surfboard companies.
