Have I found the IMS solution? Not sure but big thanks to Jari Lehto how helped me showing you, European Parts Solutions IMS oil feed modification, a solution I believe in.
In this video, I also highlight the fact that a 911 is a perfect daily driver and perhaps the first generation 997 is the best value for money in this context.

There's an article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS.
google “Autohaus Hamilton Porsche IMS” The article lists all the models and
engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. "The Porsche models that are
prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: All 986 Boxster models. - 987
Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not
including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number
    6950745"
Before 2000 Porsche used a double row IMS Bearing which had a low
failure rate, then they switched to a single row until 2005 - 2006 and this
single row has had the most problems. After 2005 - 2006 Porsche stayed with the
single row but increased it's size and strength and this bearing has had the
least problems of all three types of bearings used from 1997 to 2008. The
upgraded bearing in the 997 and 987 is unserviceable, meaning you can't reach it
unless you strip the entire engine down. Some of the early production 2005 -
2006 987 and 997 might have the pre-upgraded bearing fitted, that's why the
engine numbers in the Autohaus article might be helpful in determining which
type of IMS bearing is installed. I read in one of the UA-cam comments that Mr.
Jake Raby from Flat 6 Innovations says he has never seen an M97 engine blow an
    IMS bearing.
Starting in 2008 Porsche introduced the new 997.2 and 987.2 and
switched to a DFI direct fuel injection engine which doesn't have an IMS
    Bearing.

Oil flow coming from the back side of the IMS is a good idea. A proven design for similar bearing failure has been in use since the late 1970s in large concrete products vibrators. My late father discovered and patented the improvement after years of research. Basically, the make or break difference in preserving life span of bearings, (FAG & SKF) that are supporting a significant eccentric shaft load, was to modify the entrance end of the shaft. In short, offset the oil path at the entrance end of the shaft to use centrifugal force, (provided by the rotation of the shaft) to increase oil flow and pressure to the back of the bearing. These hydraulic vibrators are still being used to make, (up to 144" inside diameter) concrete pipe all over the world. (Make an "L" in the key.)

There is a 100% effective permanent fix to the IMS bearing failure problem. I know it but I don’t have the finance to design or patent it. It’s so frustrating because if I could patent it I’d easily have enough money to design, build and patent it. Every single 986, 996, 987.1 and 997.1 would buy it, admittedly only once but my sales would be my lottery win. I just need to fix the bore scoring for the 987 & 997 now. Millionaire in waiting.

Great video btw, just the music may be a little too loud. And I wanted to hear the engine! I love my M97 and it is only a 2.7 L in my cayman but I think it will last me a good while! Hi Janko,,
I have my 2005 997S for over three years and I have put up 15,000 miles on it and all trouble free, it has a FPSH and it was just serviced by Porsche the end of November and no issues which cost €460. Regular use and good maintenance is vital for any car and Porsche is no exception they will use approximately one liter of oil every 1000 miles as per the owners manual and you need to check it occasionally before start up which only takes a few seconds from the ignition position. If you take your time and look for a well kept car rather that the cheapest one you should have no problems once it has been properly looked after. It has no overheating problems or bore score and I don’t think it needs any modifications to the IMS, if it was going to fail it would have done so before now it has 110,000 miles on it and it is tight all around and drives like a two year old car. Great video keep up the good work this model 911 gets a lot of negative press and it’s good to hear positive comments about one for a change. Tom

I just bought my first 997.1. 103k miles. I figured if something was going to go wrong it would have by now. Bought from original owner who let me go over it really good. ( I am an 18 yr BMW tech at former Coker BMW in Texarkana Tx.) Oil was clean, A/C would freeze you out, car was like brand new, not a ding or scuff on the black paint, front cover had a few stone chips but they touched up nice. Guy really loved and took car of the car. He drove the car from Corinth Ms to Florida several time a yr to his condo. I worry about all the rubber water hoses that I'm sure need replacing, water pump is still original, but the clutch and windshield were just replaced. Car still smelled new inside, all service records from Gossett Porsche in Memphis. It is a 2008 and I paid him 35k for it, Going to be a weekend car to go along with few air cooled 911s I have. Hope it holds up.

    • @1wide9111
      @1wide9111 2 роки тому +1

@@Sh0SUPERMAN I was lucky, the guy I bought mine from had a bud with a lift, so I got to look under the car really good for RMS, coolant hoses, bent suspension arms, any other problems, you have to do that. If it has high mileage, and no rattle at cold start, doesn't puff out a big cloud of smoke, I wouldn't worry about scoring. Ive seen what looks like terrible scoring on scopes, cyl still had great compression. On the 3.6 I wouldn't worry at all, most scoring was on the 3.8. The IMS on a mid 05 and up have a very small failure rate, some say less than 1 percent. Inspect the car from cold start, warm it up for 10-15 miles, drive over bumpy road and listen for bad things, get on the hwy and get up to speed, red line it a few times after the oil is 200. I have not had a thing go wrong with mine yet. I changed the oil with euro mobil 1 5-40, cut my filter open and looked for shiny things. All good so far, but I found an exceptionally well maintained car that was DRIVEN. Look for that car. Pay little more if you have to. IMS? If it hasn't gone out by now, its not going to. Change your oil, use good oil.

Even the 997.1s are pricey in the US. The 996's were bargains, but even those prices are pretty stable now. No doubt the IMS bearing is an issue but I wonder what kind driving causes the oil starvation. LN Engineering seems popular IMS fix in the US. Very nice video production quality and I share your love of the 911. However unless I am mistaken, the factory IMS Bearing is a sealed bearing. Hence the high failure rate. Thus the grooved oil pump shaft key will only work in conjunction with an open face aftermarket IMS Bearing. Perhaps I’m mistaken and just don’t understand how it works.

  • @CowenJE
    @CowenJE 5 років тому +1

The problem with the IMS boils down to people not using it rergularly. If you don't use the engine regularly the oil turns acidic, it eats thru the sealed bearing. The bearing is greased and the grease leaks out. Adding more oil to circulate around the bearing will not lubricate it any better since the bearing gets so hot to vaporize the oil. It takes a heavy grease to keep the IMS bearing cool.
A German engineer stated the issue does not show up on cars that are driven 3-5 times a week. Track cars don't experience the IMS issue. Only people who are afraid to use the car or actually drive it.
Drive your 911 and you have less problems, Doesnt' sound like a problem to me.

On the IMS bearing setup I am familiar..., the seals shrink...allowing hot oil to enter bearing and wash out the heavy duty grease that is normally in there. Once that happens and you also start getting suspended particles in oil in bearings...they wear and fail through over heating or the bearings disintegrating and entering engine.

Janko! Love your passion for Porsche cars. It is very similar to my own passion for my Porsche's, but just with a different accent ;^) I love all things Porsche so I don't want to get hooked in or caught up in the ims fear trap, but , my only input or observation would be about when you mentioned the 3.8 liter having more IMS Issues in the 997. I think this is a bit misleading when you consider the 3.6 liter engine was carried over from the 996. The majority of all IMS failures for the 911 happened between model years 2001-2005 with smaller single row ims bearing. 1999-2001 was 3.4 liter engines. 2002-2004 was all 996 3.6 liter engines only. Model year 2005 is the year in question for 997. So you do have a point when speaking about 997 specifcally in 2005 and it still used the smaller single row bearing carried over from the 996 years. More "S" models were sold that year so technically I can see that may be why we heard higher numbers for "997 S" model ims failure... 2006-2008 saw the introduction of a Larger and more Robust IMS bearing and failures dropped dramatically. 2006-2008 IMS failures are even more rare for both 3.6 + 3.8 engines. Appreciate you taking the time to do this very informative and great video. Cheers!!. And Just as a reminder to all who read this, that the ims bearing failure was still a very small percentage over all vehicles. 90%+ or more are still running strong using those bearings!!

If this simple change was a reliable solution I'm pretty sure Porsche would have applied something like it in the 996.2 or the 997.1, when numbers came in that about 8% of 996.1 were having IMS caused damage.

@@JankoLind eventually all engines fail :) The M96 is not a great motor. starting in late 05 to 2009 they used an internal IMS bearing system which made it more robust and less prone to failure. The 1999 to 2005 cars had the bearing that just didnt like the environment. The real data needs to be all those cars that did get the bearing upgrade - aftermarket like the ones from LN engineering - how are they holding up to date. Shame - but the 1999 to 2005 996 cars are cheap enough to buy and change that bearing out. anything past that and you cant!

This is a slightly confusing video. The engine in your base 3.6 litre car (and all pre DFI Boxster and Caymans) is the M96, and this is the engine that had the bad reputation for IMS failure.
But, the engine that you showed out of the car was the M97 3.8. This has a much reduced problem with IMS failure (apart from the very early few thousand produced that did have exactly the same issue).
    So my questions are:
    1. Is the solution you showed applicable to the M96 engine?
    2. Is the solution applicable to ALL M97 engines?, or
    3. Is the solution only applicable to the early M97s?, or
    4. Is the solution only applicable to the later M97s?
    Thanks

I have a 1999 911 C2 3.4L which has the dual row ims. The car now has 103,000 miles and as far as I know, still has the original bearing. I think I will need to do something with it this year to prevent future problems. The issue with the 997.1 is in an effort to address the 996 bearing issues, Porsche enlarged the single row bearing which means unlike a 996, it's a full engine out and tear down to replace it so this keyed and punched solution may be a good preventative option. 2009 is the year they went back to a plain oiled bearing which eliminated the issue all together. The problem with the punch hole is that it will use unfiltered oil where as Raby’s IMS Solution takes the oil from the filtered side.
Secondly it is not enough to take rear end open and do the punch. You also got to take the seals from the IMSB so that you actually get the oil circulate.
Yes, the 3.8 seems to have become the most problematic of all the M96 and M97 engines with the scoring. ”Expert” now say that there are two kinds of 997 Carrera S: the ones that have had the scoring and the ones that will get it.
The cooling has become more problematic at every step of the engine volume increases. From 3.4 to 3.6 all the coolant flow calibration holes needed to be openned causing the 5th and 6th cylinder to heat even more. The 3.6 had more torque at lower revs when the coolant volume is not yet high and it also had a shorter crank (the piston leans more to the wall). To counter this Porsche increased the cooling channel air flow by 15% from 996.1 to 996.2. by changing the inlet size. Another step was taken for 997 where the cooling channel exit opens to wheel well instead of downbound infront of the front wheel like in 996.
We actually did some CFD omn the cooling channel and found that a gurney at the leading edge of the 996 exit increased air volume flow by 20% with 15 mm and almost 30% with a 30 mm gurney. For 997 I would add a gurney to the leading edge of the front wheel opening (btw. Im a professional aerodyanmicist).
However, IMO, what these engines really need is more cooling for the oil. We measured the sump temperatures and they were ... let’s say on the high side and Im designing now a sump pan with cooling ribs for my car (3.4). Hopefully I have time to finish it this season.
But conclusively, absolutely no doubt in my mind, the 911, regardless of the year, is a fantastic car, probably the best car ever. i dont now any other car as fun to drive as a 911.

Some other options for fixes, given the whole problem relates to higher frictional loads than Porsche in OEM spec anticipated or presumably were discovered during testing. Ceramic bearings deal with heat better and I believe carry less friction, but the others spread load to reduce wear, good regular oil changes are just a given. ua-cam.com/video/I0dqyvvf8uw/v-deo.html hope this helps anyone currently considering all these options or experiencing issues.....

This solution does not make any sense, since the IMS Bearing is sealed, so no oil can go into it, unless you change it.

In fact, it was my understanding the problem was that the bearings were sealed and grease lubricated. When the seals failed oil washed the grease out. Since oil was not good enough to lube the bearing it failed. Seems like this "fix" would speed up potential failures. I had a 2000 Boxster with 22k miles and IMS failure. Last Porsche for me.

Exactly, that is the issue, @@stevesmith3890 ; this, the solution in this video does not solve the problem. There are solutions in the market for this, though.

It's not the IMS shaft! The S in IMS is "shaft" so you are actually saying Intermediate Shaft Shaft...i'm being picky but you seem the type that likes to be correcto.

You're about ten years late with this.....missed the point about where the problem actually is...way over the top dramatically, ...and the music is too loud...too much....too often.

I came for an IMS solution, was met with droning babble and annoyingly loud music. Done at the 4 min mark.
