- Day 3 started windy and ended wet. Cut short by bad weather and the promise of worse I seek shelter in a very nice cafe and end up sleeping in a toolshed.

Beautiful scenery, despite the rain, and great musical accompaniment.
Thank you. The music is just stuff found in the UA-cam library but I've managed to dig through the rubbish and find a few that I really like.
The landscapes on this ride were actually good enough that the weather never got bad enough to take the edge of it. It was a truly fantastic trip and a route I'd recommend wholeheartedly!
Chips and bacon rolls have got to be good incentive. A bit of a grueller.
My empathy increases and deepens mile by mile - Shap, the Beattock, crossing Orkney et al - can't beat the refreshing onslaught of a head wind combined with driving rain!!
However, being a shedaholic myself , at least you had a good dry kip.
Shed - think yourself fortunate. On Unst, I saw the bare square patch of ground where a honeymooning couple had been blown, shed and all, over the cliffs (100mph+ winds) on a New Year's Eve some time ago, never to be seen again.

The small things become incentives when you're out on the bike - warmth, dry socks, hot food, a chair with a back rest.
It's a great way to renew appreciation for the simple pleasures in life.
As is remembering that at any moment we could be blown off a cliff into the sea 😬

Fantastic! You won't regret it. It is an amazing trail and will be challenging whilst also being completely doable.

Holy cliff hanger ! I hope you didn't choose to throw in the towel as I would hate for my two favorite bicycle tourers (you and yours truly) to have quit their most recent tours. Patiently waiting on the edge of my seat.............

Sorry it was such a short installation. I had been expecting to do a full day but the weather had other plans.
I can break the tension by saying that I woke up to better skies and the next installment will be coming soon

I wish I'd filmed more in the station house and at least got you chaps to wave to the camera. At any other point in the ride that storm would have sent me home but it actually turned into a top afternoon of food, beer and food company.

In this case it was a great place to spend the night. I slept really well and weathered the storm in great comfort 😉

It was actually a surprisingly comfy night other than the shed being a couple of inches shorter than me.
I stayed warm and dry and listened to the weather and I can give you a spoiler alert - the weather did improve in the morning so there is a Day 4 coming 😃
@Jeff Dickenson if I hadn't happened to be in the vicinity of a cosy shed it would have been a very different story I think.

We all live our lives in a state of constantly striving towards owning a shed. I don't have one at home so no wonder I felt so content for this night 😉
I hope this journey will continue too, it's a stunning landscape that has me dreaming of my own adventure.
Watching these videos make me aware of the fact that every day is a treasure in its own way. We all have our favorite riding conditions of course, but you guide us to that appreciation as we share these trips with you. Inspiring, educational even and always fun. Rain, wind, clouds, sun, snow, bring it all on. Thanks again. Looking forward to episode four.

I know, dunno what happened there. I'm sure if you had been there it would have been much worse. We probably wouldn't have survived!
I do enjoy watching and listening to your videos; great scenery, great commentary and great music. I watched this last on with rain pouring down outside so I was kind of there with you. However, being warm and dry with a cup of coffee in my hand, a twinge of quilt ran through me as I thought of our different comfort levels. Keep up the good work come rain or shine! Tomorrow will be a better day 🤞 .
It never rains for long and the truth is that I'd rather be out bikepacking in the rain than indoors working when the sun is out.
It's all relative and relatively speaking a bit of rain doesn't hurt on a trip like this one 😉

The shed was a lifesaver. Or at least a comfort saver. A wild camp that night would have been a pretty unpleasant experience I think
Torn between a solo route around Skye and half nc500 or a double divide back home next month 🤷 looks epic tbf
It's a fantastic route, honestly one of the best named trails that I've ridden, every mile is stunning and though it's got some hard moments it is all very doable.
I'd recommend it if it's on the list for sure.
ooo, too familiar - a day of lowering clouds and dripping waterproofs, and feeling like a tool at the end of the day.
I was very happy to end the day in a tool shed.
I spent the afternoon and evening in the Station House so I was a little drunk when I recorded my outro. All in all not a bad way to spend a rainy day in the wilderness 😉
The old shed was full of mice when I was there last May, and apparently they kept the occupant awake. That shed looks like it might lead to a quieter night. I was tempted to bail art Ossian but after a night's sleep and a solid breakfast things looked very different. I'd dried off by then too!
The new shed was mouse free and very cosy.
It is amazing what a night under a roof and a good breakfast can do for your spirits and the stretch after the hostel turned out to be amazing. I was glad I didn't bail.
It looks as if the day after could not be bad after such a day 🙂
Yeah, fortunately it was a short lived storm. The weather never returned to the glorious sunshine of day 1 but I'm glad I could shelter from the worst of it. That shed possibly saved my ride 😉
Pish and tish I say to you Sir, You are a human bean constructed from 90% water and the rest carbon based like diamonds which are the hardest thing on earth ergo YOU are the hardest thing on earth so don’t let an extra bit of moisture halt your glorious adventure, break out the poncho and crack on. You do have a poncho don’t you? I camped in a shed for a week in Amsterdam once.
I don't have a poncho 😟
On this one I didn't even have waterproof trousers. I was attempting to pack light but I undercooked it on clothes and overcooked it on food.
It all turns out ok though. Spoiler alert, i finish the ride 😉
@@JethroJessop I always had faith in you. Actually I’ve found a woolly jumper my best wet weather top. Yes it gets wet but it allows out all the sweaty moisture and keeps me dry, odd as it seems.
@@Cobwobbler yeah, a good Merino layer can do wonders. And in the UK it's also good to remember that, despite a reputation to the contrary, it doesn't actually rain that much or for that long.
There is always a sunny day just around the corner 😉
@@JethroJessop Agreed, throughout my year of commuting I think it’s only rained about 5 or 6 times during my ride, until I go home today naturally 😒i splashed out on some Merino joggers and they are bliss on a wet ride.
@@Cobwobbler I'm always keeping an eye on eBay for Merino layers. They go super cheap sometimes and there are bargains to be had

It certainly is. The weather never fully recovered but it also never got bad enough to take the edge of the ride. I lucked out with finding my shed just when the storm was coming in.
Riding in the rain is not fun and hypothermia is not something to be underestimated in places like Scotland. I think it was a good call. And who can say he slept in a tool shed? :-)
Exactly. I don't think I would have been in any mortal danger but you never know. That wind would definitely have pushed my tent to its limits if not beyond so yeah, I was very grateful for that shed and as you say, it makes for a good trail story.

I'm aiming for one every 7-10 days. That seems to keep the algorithm happy and lets me keep at least a pretence of a regular schedule.

Been waiting for the next installment, I admire your persistence I just hate cycling in the rain. In the Nordic countries they say there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
I agree with that to a certain extent but I've yet to find any clothing that will keep you properly whilst cycling in anything more than drizzle. If the rain doesn't get in then the sweat will get you.
If anyone can prove me wrong on this then I'd be very grateful 😉
If I hadn't been at the hostel when the weather set in then it would have been a very different story. I don't think my tent would have stood up to the wind in the open and i wouldn't have felt safe under trees. It would have been a pretty miserable night.
As it was I survived unscathed and the route and scenery is honestly good enough that the wind and the rain couldn't take the edge off 😃

@@JethroJessop Columbia Titanium Dry jackets are very good, they don't "wet out" so maintain breathability in rain. With a thin merino base layer underneath I remain comfortable. There's some humidity but I don't feel wet. They're not the longest lasting though. Mine lasted about 4 years before the top layer delaminated from the underlying material. See the Bearbones forum for discussion on them.

It's a subject that you can drop into and that can stick up a lot of money. First hand experience is always valuable so this is going on my research list.

Makes me realise my day 3 and 4 weren't so bad after all! FYI no hot food at the Station between 3 and 5. Guess when I arrived? 😞

I was really lucky I think. Turned up in time to have lunch, managed to get a spot for dinner too, spent the evening eating and drinking by the woodburner with a load of other riders then slept tight in my shed.

Cycling in the pouring rain is miserable - no argument there. Shed looks decent enough but barely long enough for you. I'd be OK (shorty). :)
Had it been 6 inches longer it would have been up there in the list of cosiest camp spots ever.
Even propped up at an angle though I was very grateful to be in there. A wild camp that night would have been pretty unpleasant.

Pity you let the herd tell you to wear a plastic bowl on your head . ive managed to survive 62 years off cycling without one and ive only been killed 300 or 400 times !
PS your music is always tooo loud in relation to your talking , constructive criticism i hope . like you bike my tourer is a genesis longitude with roloff , very similar .
It wasn't the herd per say, it was a combination of things. I had a couple of wobbly moments at speed on the KAW, my nephew asking why I wasn't wearing a helmet and then just getting a helmet that is actually comfortable.
I'll never be a big fan and I'm not convinced they are as important as everyone makes out but it figure it's such a small sacrifice that it's not really worth worrying about. I've known (vaguely) a few people have serious head injuries in the last few years and it would just be really embarrassing to become one of that club, especially if I caught it on video 😉
On the music point, I agree but it is just really hard to balance the levels especially when editing on the phone. I can only really line it up by eye.
I do try as best I can.
