- How to replace the battery on your car. In this video I how how to replace the battery on a Ford Mondeo Mk4. I have not added any commentary to this video as it is hopefully self explanatory.
Leave the car at least 5 minutes after switching off the ignition and make sure you have your radio code before disconnecting the battery. Always disconnect the negative first.
I used a Bosch S5 type 100 (S5007) which has slightly lower Ah than the standard battery (74Ah v 80Ah) but higher CCA (750CCA v 720CCA). The Bosch is also a slightly smaller battery. If you want something more powerful you could go for the Bosch S5010 or Varta F18. The Varta is the same physical size as the standard battery (315x175x175) but more powerful in both Ah and CCA (85Ah and 800CCA).
Here are some links for each battery and other stuff you may need for the job:
Bosch S5007 battery: amzn.to/1fYrW2B
Bosch S5010 battery: amzn.to/Ru9rHD
Varta F18 battery: amzn.to/1nkSehN
Cable ties: amzn.to/1nkSEEM
Really useful info. I will say that at 7:55, swinging the extended ratchet back and forth while attaching the earth, puts the rachet handle worryingly close to the the positive terminal leads. It will very quickly alert to the error, if they touch - because that is a dead short.
I just replaced mine yesterday. I hadn't seen this video, but I used the Haynes manual as they describe this exactly process. My advice would be to take the car to the workshop :-) but if you have to do it yourself, some hints:
1. unscrewing the negative terminal out of the body was quite hard. It is very tight, so if you plan to use a regular spanner, be patient and try to keep the negative terminal in contact with the body all the time, otherwise you'll have sparks... The same goes for screwing it back to the body, it took me quite a lot time and I went very slowly.
2. to remove the air cleaner: as someone pointed out, it's rather easier if you remove the top plastic cover, and the filter itself, then, from within the air-box (bottom part), you can easily detach it from the air inlet tube with your hand.
3. There's a zip tie that holds the positive cables to the battery tray. I didn't cut it, but it's definitely easier if you do.

How dyou avoid sparks?? I am just trying to screw negative terminal back to body but it won’t stop sparking. Is there anything else I can disconnect to avoid this?
Edna D' Evil Its 2 years since your comment so I’m sure you figured it out fine but just in case anyone else reads this and wonders wrapping your spanner handle (or ratchet) in insulation tape works. 👍🏻
Older video I know but this just saved me a ton of hassle. I removed the ground from the battery rather than the on-body connector, no issues at all. Had to reset the sony audio code, but found another video on how to do this and took 30 seconds. Thanks man.
Thanks very much. This might not be for everyone to try but my plastic shroud around the battery was already cracked so I used a multi tool to cut it away (10 seconds). I then had enough access to the battery (even though the replacement was a slightly larger Varter model) without removing any other equipment. As others did, I also found the negative earth terminal incredibly stiff. My socket wasn’t deep enough to fit over the post and I only had about 15° of turn on the spanner. Solution: I ground the earth post about 5mm shorter with an angle grinder (20 seconds) and then my socket fit nicely over the nut. Like I say, not everyone will want to do this but it worked for me and saved me a ton of trouble. Thanks for showing us the correct way to do it anyway! 😀
Thank you for posting this. All went smoothly with 20-25mins all up. I'm not sure why, but I found the air filter dead easy to reinstall.
Thankyou, this really helped me work out how to do this. Quite a pain really just to change a battery. I guess I am used to older cars :)
Just replaced my battery. The video was helpful.
One comment, no need to cut the zip tie (at 2:57) you can unconnect the whole thing from the battery holder.
To Blade46, just seen your comment on changing battery on my mk4 mondeo, so glad i saw your comment because i thought christ going through all that just to change a battery. Again glad i saw this very helpful, stopped me from dismantling half the car just to replace my battery.
mate this was awesome. changed my battery in about 20 mins cos of this vid. excellent work :):)
can you imagine if you did not have the vid ;))
You really don't have to do any of that, don't touch the air box or sensors, or even the headlight which some people think you have to do, i have the same mk4 mondeo and all you have to do is lift off the battery front cover, 1 plastic tab each side, remove the battery bracket with an 8mm socket, remove the earth lead with a 13mm socket, ( electrical tape over earth), remove the positive lead, 10mm and slide the battery toward you and tilt up and then negative, also 10mm, reverse for refitting, if after refitting you get IMMOBILISER ACTIVE on dash binnacle and no side lights take off negative lead and earth, ( tape again) and leave for 5-10 minutes for the ECU to sort itself out and then re fit, don't forget you'll need your radio code because of disconnecting the battery, hope this helps
Does that really work with all battery sizes? I assume that not all engine options have the same battery size fitted.
Especially the diesels are 80Ah and fill the whole place.
@@Istram Don't think it works with the larger battery's that fill the whole tray but it definitely works with the smaller ones, mine is a 2L diesel so I think it's only the bigger engine mondeo's that would have a larger battery than that but we'll worth looking at before you start taking air filters and sensors off, this is the 2nd battery I've had in 10 years so it's definitely the right size
No way that would work with my S-Max battery. It's too big. Even with the top of the Air filter box off it's a squeeze.
Thanks for the video. Changed my battery in 20 minutes. Trickiest bit was reconnecting the air intake tube to the plastic moulding behind the grill. Getting it lined up was the issue.
I took mine to my nearest mechanic in an emergency for a new one. This guy has over 20 years of experience apparently and he hadn't change a MK4 Mondeo.. and he too fucking ages to change it . I had to go round 2 hours later to see how he was getting on after watching your video i was confident enough to help him out. He had the ne battery in place which was good but blimey! did he make a bit of a meal out of it. I told him to take the engine cover off to make access easier.. but no! he didn't do that. so he struggled and had difficulty's trying to replace the Air Filter Box as the outside air intake plastic tube piece kept falling off, he ended up taking off the top part of the washer fluid bottle off just to get it in .. anyway he got there in the end. battery was £65 + Labour + VAT = £88. Varta Battery with 4 Year guarantee.
Thanks to your video i could have saved myself the extra charge but i would still have to go and get the battery in a taxi or something Plus it was raining heavily ally day. so all in all your video help me a lot mate cheers.
The wilding French canals cruise
Thanks for this vid, got my battery changed in 25mins and I have no skill or particular knowledge of mechanics, not got great tools either but didn't matter.
I've used your videos more than once. Thank you very much for your effort.
Thanks, very helpful video!
A little tip for your next video: Place your lighting in a way so your body doesn't shade the area you work on. Will be better for both working and video : )
Absolutely brilliant you made it easy to follow and I did it in 30 minutes which is great for me
Used this video to remove and charge the battery on my Mondeo, excellent, thanks!
Glad it helped.
+GreasyPrimate. When i am about to remove the negative With the bolt it sparks a little bit. Any tips?
Dont forget to find your radio code before disconnecting! Thanks for the video!
what do u mean?
@@Half_Finis When you disconnect the battery and connect it back your build in nav will ask for a code. It is written on a card with the car papers, but if you dant have, you ont be able to get the radio on again.
Brilliant video. Would have taken hours to change my battery without watching this video first. As it was it only took me 20 minutes from start to finish. I would definitely recommend having a decent socket / spanner set to do this job.
Thanks for uploading it. Never expected could be difficult to replace a battery
This is an excellent I am sure the steps are similar for a Ford Focus Ghia. Great video and great information in the description also
Thanks mate. Just changed the battery on my MK3 Galaxy TDCI and was stumped!! I couldn't get the whole air box out in one so took the top off first but had to change the filter anyway - cheers
Great video. Saved me lots of time though you missed out the spend 2 hours sifting through paperwork to find the stereo code afterwards bit!
Thanks for this. A big help and managed to change mine well enough and saved a lot of head scratching if I hadn't looked at this first! My air filter hose was really stiff to get off and on again and I had to lever it off with a screwdriver but fortunately no damage! Cheers
👍👍
Most awkward battery replacement, but thanks to your vid it made it way easier. Thank you
Great video, however you didn't mentioned, that some Mondeos require Battery Management System (BMS) reset. If this is not done, low battery message keep on displaying.
Thanks mate, big help. Was a tight squeeze getting the front filter hose reconnected but removing the left headlight gave me more space to get a grip and pull it on. Thanks again
Excellent - helped me out. The air hose didn't detach quite as easily for me. I had to lever it off with a broad screwdriver. Other than that, all worked brilliantly. Thanks....
Just replaced a battery in a Mondeo Mk4 very easy to do. One thing missing from this post is the need to preserve the car radio code (lost if battery disconnected. I used a power pack (a spare battery plus jump leads would be ok) to make sure that the car was never without power. I connected to the +ve terminals and used a large nut just under the battery tray as an earth I wrapped a polythene bag around the +ve terminals (still connected to the power pack) to protect against a short. Worked a treat about 30min with the extra car to preserve the radio code. getting the air cleaner seated was a bit of a struggle - I did remove the top of the air filter so that I could see the seating a bit better.
With a little squeezing, I was able to remove and install a new battery
without having to remove the air cleaner. Thanks for the video which did
teach me some other things to watch for.
Thanks for the comment and glad the video helped somewhat.
I changed my Ford galaxy battery after watching this video, very helpful. Many thanks.
Great video! It was of big help today changing my 2010 Mondeo battery. Couldn't have done it without the instructions. Now it was a piece of cake! Thank you.
Good video, no long-winded pre amble, bish bash bosh, just saved me a load of grief, thanks 😁👍
Hi....this is pretty good and very informative...........I only wish you could have kept the video more clear by avoiding the dark shadow when working on the front and your body more out of the way when working on the side. Thank you,
7:53 bit close to that posi terminal with the ratchet fella!
Absolutely irresponsible assembly.
Short-circuit risk very high
First, the negative pole should be connected to the positive pole. Eliminates sparking and protects car electronics.
@@mac-gyver" the negative pole should be connected to the positive pole"
There maybe a slight chance of misunderstanding😎
Thanks this was very helpful. fitting the air filter assembly will be a breeze if you angel it in from the bottom. that's aim for the bottom housing aligning first. once that fits plugin the clips.
This was a brilliant video. Successfully changed my battery thanks to this
Bravi 👏👏👏👏👏e grazie per questi video..🖒
Sinceramente devo cambiare una batteria da 10 anni🤗.Non ci avevo pensato🤔a fare un ponte..buona giornata è grazie ancora👏👏
Great vid....how did you pull up the air filter box, is it just the clip in front holding it in place? Thanks again
fitted varta f18, couldnt of done it without watching this, thanks
litt knotete men videoen hjalp til å løse problemet. Takk for god video.
her snek det seg inn en norsk kommentar ja haha
0:11 ist that fart?
if i remove my battery from my mondeo 1.8 petrol 2004 to charge it will i have any issues when putting back the battery? does it need to still be connected to the car while charging for onboard computer etc?
Many thanks for this useful video, and greetings from France ;)
The inlet tube on the air filter can be easily unclipped from the airbox. Makes the job much easier.
Removal of the air filter housing is difficult, more so than the this video shows. I couldn't get mine off! The tube at the bottom wouldn't come off. But overall the video is good. Did Ford deliberately make changing the battery difficult so that you would take the car to a Ford dealer? Seems like it. Thanks, GreasyPrimate.
Hi, interesting video, where do I access the negative terminal as I only want to give a jump start to another car ? I can see the positive one but not the negative one? Thanks
Connect the Jump lead negative terminal to the body, where the battery negative leads to.
Just changed the battery and i did have a lot of problems getting the filter box back in the car, there was no way that i could get it in. After much trouble i finally decide that i would take the duct at the bottom off and try and reconnect it after i out in the box. Turned out that what i could not figure out in 20 minutes took me about 2 minutes to fix when i disasembled the 2 parts as there was enough space below to assemble it there.
Just changed my battery using this video. Very helpful thanks
Youre welcome. Glad it helped.
Used this today! Thanks for taking the time to post it.
Cheers for the video, much appreciated.
A great guide on how to make a complicated task out of a simple operation. :D
I've come to the conclusion that multiple elements to this were designed to make it as difficult as possible, the battery front cover with it's hidden clips, the neg terminal hidden under the rest of the cover, the neg lead to body screw that takes forever to unscrew (with sparks the whole way), with the risk of your wrench shorting across the + terminal leads, the lack of any reliable ground point if you want to connect a battery to keep the radio code and window auto function, the radio itself where the code isn't entered as you'd expect and the "enter key" isn't obvious (took me like 15 attempts, even knowing the code).
The heater blower comes on when you're trying to reconnect the battery, causing even more sparks and draws too much current for any small backup battery you might use for the radio.
I've done a few jobs on these cars now and i'm not being paranoid, it is designed purposely to make it extremely hard to do even the simplest of tasks.
07:53, I get sparking off the earth as I tighten it to the body. For this reason, I thought that you should connect the positive terminal last, but the internet says no. Should it spark?? Feels a bit 'live'!
Very helpful video. Thank you
Useful video. Thanks.
Thanks for making this. Just swapped out the stock battery (2008!) with a nice Bosch S5 110.
I think the lower half of the air box will actually disconnect from the upper half. I didn't test it though but it looks like it can.
The sparks on reconnecting the negative gave me a bit of a fright. Wasn't expecting it!
That's all relief seeing your post mate cos I've just got my self a Bosch S 5 and I'm worried it won't fit even though I've heard they do cos it's a right monster of a battery lol
SuperDixxxie
As long as it's the 110 type (85ah, 800CCA) you should be fine. I believe the dimensions are 315x175x175
It is mate, thanks for reply
Hi all. I have a galaxy 2013 2.0 diesel. The engine is still starting but shakes a lot more now than when it was warmer. The battery is still the factory model never replaced. What Bosch battery should I buy for it, I believe the galaxy requires the same type as the mondeo?
Top video. Muchas Grassyarse!
What a lot to faff around with. My Galaxy 2.8i 4x4 was so simple than my now Galaxy 2.0 TDCI. Was thinking of fitting a Direct Connector Adaptor but to have to go through that just to fit it, not good & im not a novice. I thought topping up my brake fluid on my 2.8I Galaxy was bad.
Sweet stuff my man
Thanking you
Who designed this needs a swift kick to the chops what options dose this design give for jump starting
Jump starting is not an issue. There's a little door where the positive connector is, you can open it and attach the cable. The negative conector goes on the bolt of the cable, to the right of the battery. Or pretty much anywhere on the engine block.
Its a shame that many simple procedures on the mk3 have been made relatively complicated on the mk4 Mondeo, this is one example, the other is replacement of headlight bulbs. At least they have moved the oil filter from the bottom to the top of the engine, German style.
Thank You, good show. It took me only 15 min.
OMG, I just want to get mine jump started. Do I have to go through all that?
Nope. For jump starting, only positive is enough. And ground the negative.
@@niyazshaffi6978 All great, but I'm still getting sparks when grounding the negative. Never had this issue with previous cars....but then again, previous cars I was able to access both terminals without removing anything.
Trying to unscrew the point of mass like that will end up with a lot of sparks and numerous potential side effect. Removing the '+' is much quicker and safer.
1:55 what fitting is used for this? The bolt has a bit that sticks out so my socket wrench doesn't fit!! HELP.....!!! Thanks in advance.
Needs a deepish socket, or you could use a spanner if you had to
How d’you avoid sparks when reconnecting the negative to the body? I’ve tried keeping the terminal in contact whilst putting bolt back in but it won’t stop sparking.
Do the negative first. Then the positive. I found a lot less sparks as easier to keep the positive connected whilst tightening.
@@yorkshiretea77 From what I've read online, consensus seems to be that reconnecting positive first is much safer.
Do you loose CD/Radio code when changing?
crynshame For those that may still be wondering this, yes you do.
Radio key codes are similar to locking wheel lugs, the only person inconvenienced is the vehicle owner.
can anyone link me or tell me what the bolt is called where the negative lead is attached to the body, i unscrewed it and dropped it. Thanks
Nice video. But do not forget reset the BMS after battery replacing.
Very helpful thank you
seems alot of trouble just to change a battery most cars you just undo battery take it out and thats it no having to mess about taking air filters and everything off as well just to take it out and replace it
Thank you
I changed my battery turning it on its side ad pull it upwards. No need to take the air filter off
How do you remove the cable from second 19? If I just pull it, it does not work. Is there any trick?
You should see a red tab/clip on the connector. Push/prise the red clip up and the connector will come off.
***** I read some of your posts on Talk Ford.. I just wanted to know if there are any other videos like this on MK4 Servicing and General maintenance and Tips?
Tambo74 I have a play list for Mk4 videos. Check out my channel.
Doesnt the inmobilzer go on? The inmobilzer makes the car not go start. Ive heard that sometimes the inmobilzer goes on when you change batteri or by jump starting.
It could be worse. On my Triumph Stag you have to remove the power steering pump to get the battery out...
I changed / charged my MK3's battery a couple of times with ease, but this is frightening.
Jesus what a carry on........I changed mine without ANY of this mess 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Should of put the battery clamp on before attaching the positive cable! Very close to that terminal.when you attached the clamp afterwards.
Thx :)
It would never go back in the same way if I done this.
Used to have a Volvo. Battery change = 2 mins. Now I have a Mondeo, battery change = I don't know if I can face it.
Cheers pal
Thanks
They is no need to take engine cover and filter covers off just to change battery
ford certainly over engineered this job, remember when battery's were isolated from everything and access to all sides were easy, on a foot note a commentary might be helpful, like why your taping up the negative battery lead, and be careful not to touch the positive terminal with metal tools, just a thought, but very helpful video,
I can't see what you are doing. How about some commentary of what you are doing. Thanks for posting the video though.
Oh and thanks for the videos :)
I carnt get my air filter out carnt separate the hose
Engineering from FORD should be fired !!!
Try to replace the cabin filter. :)
Agreed
tried. the day was ruined.
Yep. Fired with no severance or pension
I wanted to get my battery off. I cannot believe it's been made so difficult. Bloody ridiculous design. There should be a battery hat, a bracket and two terminals to take off at most, then you should be able to just pull it out. Whoever designed this was an idiot or a sadist.
Totally agree... what a total idiot to design a battery where both terminals are not easily accessible.... he should go back to the job centre
You didn't connect rear lead
5-60 he ain't connected the negative lead !!!
Fuck, was the design engineer smoking pot or something when they decided to bury the battery under 5 tonnes of auxiliaries?!
Ive just watched this, I just ripped my battery out without take away the side plastic, doh!
The battery tray cover, I ended up breaking it, f**king hidden clips.
it cost me 240 euros to replace the battery on my 2008 ford mondeo.
I thought expensive
