IMHO, the Apple IIgs is the best way to drop into the world of Apple IIs. Good luck with the IIe.

Thank you! I decided to go with either a ][, ][e or ][ plus because that takes me almost all the way back to the beginning of Apple. (I'm not paying $1.5M for an Apple I). The IIgs may indeed be a better machine, but I wanted to go as far back as I could to get started.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes for you. Although I have a IIe I know very little about their internal workings. Have a whole lot of fun with it ;)

I'll be relying heavily on the knowledge of others. Fortunately, there are a ton of UA-cam videos on the subject that I can watch to get pointers. Thanks, Peter!

Oh I wouldn't worry too much about Apple and later M$ appropriating the WIMP GUI from Xerox, because Xerox were *never* going to do anything commercial with it.

It was just the principle of the thing. It showed what kind of people they were and it rubbed me the wrong way. Thanks for watching!

The Apple II line of machines were great. For me, around the time of Apple’s release of the Mac was when they started making things difficult for their customers, beginning with releasing the IIgs with a 2.8mhz clock even though the processor in it was rated at 4mhz so as not to impact Mac sales.

I very biased against the brand and have been avoiding the retro Apple range too, successfully so far, 😉I was also avoiding the Amigas because it is a very deep pit that requires a ton of money to fill, but that didn't stick, Came upon a very good deal, so I now have an A500 Rev5 which thought me a lot, soon to be exchanged with an A500+. I intend to restrict myself there and declare that 16bits is my borderline for retro computers. As a self-thought electronics hobbyist, I am more than comfortable in the 8bit world, my knowledge is very challenged with 16bits, and I know anything beyond will be a pain rather than fun. 😅

Glad to know I'm not alone in my issues with Apple. I do want to explore Amigas, but, like you said, they're always too expensive. I'll keep looking for a good deal. Thanks for watching!
