  • Hello again!
We're back on the Apple ][ Plus today. We'll be doing a teardown, servicing the power supply and looking at the keyboard.
The PSU is no big surprise. There's Rifa evil to be exorcized before it spews its badness all over.
The keyboard is far more interesting. It's not what I thought at all.
    Hope you enjoy the video!
    Thank you for watching

I'm not. Those little leaf springs are SOOOOO delicate, not to mention I have almost zero 3D modeling skills. Might be a while before that one comes out. Thanks, Larry.

Congrats on your first Apple. Now you know about as much as I do about them!

That memory card you had there was sometimes called a "language card", but it's actually just a 16K memory expansion. There was an earlier product that was the "true" Language Card that had alternate ROMs containing Applesoft BASIC and different firmware, plus a toggle switch. That earlier card was intended for the earlier Apple II product (pre-Plus). The 16K memory expansion you have could also be used to run an alternate BASIC, but it was not required to boot from a floppy. The Apple II Plus can do that out of the box. That memory card borrows some signals off the motherboard by plugging into one of the RAM sockets. You'll find the displaced RAM IC on the memory card. It should be moved back to the motherboard to be able to use the computer without the memory card (actually, it may boot without that IC, but your higher memory bank will not work: $8000-$BFFF).
That mystery wire you weren't sure about looked like a version of the "shift key" mod, which was usually used in conjunction with an alternate character ROM to get lower-case characters.
Too bad you got that particular keyboard. They're a total nightmare to work on. I can't offer you much help, as I've struggled with that one myself (and ultimately just replaced the whole thing). My hat's off to you if you can manage to fix it.

Wow! Sounds like you're the guy to go to. Thank you for the information. I'm obviously just learning about the Apple ]['s and that's really helpful. I did get your e-mail, by the way. Thanks for that, too.

Great video Todd :) Beautiful machine! Yes, those power supplies can be dangerous, I have some bad memories with Atari 1040st psu :) Cheers!

I have a screwdriver around somewhere with a 7 or 8mm hole in the shaft where I touched the wrong thing and vaporized part of it. I'm usually even more careful than I was here. Thanks, Josip!

"Rifa" (a brand name). And I only found one. Maybe the other had been previously changed out. After all, the PSU rivets had already been drilled out. Thanks for watching!
