NZ Railways, coal train to Huntly from Westfield 1990

Proceeding with a Df from the loco depot to the marshalling yards at Westfield, Auckland and coupling to a coal train to be taken to Huntly. Scenes of the marshalling yard, views and activity from the cab before leaving and during the trip to Huntly.

Awesome record, thanks. Westfield yard and South Auckland stations the way I remember them. Started in the Loco Supervisors Office 1980 as a Clerical Cadet + part time Clippy 1984-91, was ruthanised (made redundant) when OWS was sadly closed in June 1992. Lucky enough to get 3 or 4 cab rides during my 12 year career 👍.

Love it. Around the same year I got a ride in the cab of a DC from Huntly to mission bush and back. What an experience.

That guy is Shorty Hanson who made a name for himself in the sporting world of wrestling. I don't think hi-viz was invented in those days not on the railways anyway. Loco staff were issued with a black and blue check woolen floppy rimmed hat that certainly wasn't hi-viz but it kept the head warm.

This was when railmen were allowed to know what the fuck they were doing. And freazing workers were allowed to get on with there jobs. A good old friend once said to me MF built this country. And for me, so did all the rest. hard knuckles eveyone.
