  • This is what a real homestead kitchen looks like in the beginning! In this chatty kitchen day, processing chicken, canning chicken soup, sharing something I did not do when all I had was small children and talking about there's a time and season for everything.
    I'm also sharing something that EMBARRASSED me as a teen, looking back at older footage that I had lost and year one joys and struggles here on our homestead. At the end I've even got an Azure Standard haul.

    So glad you left the conversation in of you and your son. Real life is the best and I have many of those conversations with my kids, thanks for keeping it real.

    I have never heard of an extension office before these videos.
    What are some store bought treats or products you’ll never give up no matter how “unhealthy” they are. For me I will never give up Heinz’s Ketchup or Kraft singles. 😂 Everything else can be home/scratch made but those.

    I love that you asked your mom how to can and she knew how to do it and that all your friends knew too. . .like you were behind in something that doesn't exist in my area of life at all. I don't think any people I know who live where I grew up and currently live know how to can!! That's awesome you have that skill! I'd love to learn. One of my friends recently learned how to preserve avocados and told me too.

    A possibility for your water situation 💦
    We live on a spring fed homestead and our water drops dramatically in the late summer and into fall, until we’ve had a few good storms. I’ve learned that mulch is my best friend. I don’t till my garden and I mulch everything heavily. It allows me to water so much less frequently which is also a huge time saver.
    We do have a spring fed pond for irrigation as well that was under a thick layer of sod when we bought our property almost 9 years ago. My husband began digging it out and we got a cease and desist letter from our county. When we showed them that our pond was grandfathered in and on the tax map, they allowed us to continue. That was a huge blessing as it allows us to water our garden from the pond rather than using up our limited spring water for the house. Sometimes it’s difficult to live this way and I wonder why we do it when we could just elect to pay for water service instead but ultimately it’s given us gratitude for the times of abundant water and all the luxuries that come with it (nightly baths) and bred resourcefulness in us for when our water is limited.

      That is a good idea! We did get it worked out last year, we got an irrigation system, but I would like to add this as well when we can! Thank you!

    Thank you for sharing! My kids and I don't eat meat, but my husband does, so some of the chicken info was definitely helpful. I have been wanting to learn how to can forever! I need to just do it, lol. I love Ecclesiastes 3 as well! Thank you for the reminder to do what we can where we are. I know as moms running a household, we tend to push ourselves too hard, and then we get overwhelmed. I have been learning not to put too much pressure on myself and to allow God to help me in all things and to have joy and peace in all circumstances. God is so good! 🙌 I am gluten-free and love to bake as well! I will have to see if you share any recipes. I would love to learn more about herbology, especially learning what plants I can grow or pick locally to help with different things. My family is into natural healing, so I use herbs and other natural ways to heal. I will have to see if you have any herbology videos. I love your channel! ❤

    you know how I answer those who like to argue about canning (I teach canning to others)? If they say, "well, my grandmother water bathed meat and she was fine", I say, "Yes, & doctors didn't think they needed to wash their hands before doing surgery & that is why President Garfield died." If they don't know any history they give me a blank look😆 But I DO know my history & KNOW that doctors in England at the time of Garfield's assassination KNEW that sterilizing things & washing their hands lowered surgical mortality. American doctors pooh-poohed it & refused to implement the simple task that was literally life saving. When they probed Garfield in surgery, to find the bullet, they NEVER washed their hands any of the dozens of times they dealt with his wounds. He died of infection, not from being shot (they determined later that he would have lived - just that the bullet would have stayed lodged). So yes, maybe your grandmother did do things a certain way, but it was out of a lack of information or the science had not caught up yet. Just do it the right way - it is so much easier than dying or having to argue with me about your dangerous canning methods! LOL

    Wow, it's our two year anniversary, too.
    We moved to our very rural area in the plains of Texas.
    Wow, what a 2 years it's been!
    We built our tiny home during the time.
    I love the planking you have on your walls.
    What did you use and was it crazy expensive?
    I am a homeschool mom of my almost 6 years old.
    Do you have any suggestions on budget friendly resources for our little homeschool?

    • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  Місяць тому +2

      Hello! Happy 2 year home anniversary!! For budget friendly homeschool, definitely The Good and The Beautiful! They've got some of the best curriculum I've seen in my almost 40 years in the homeschool world. Last I checked they had free materials!
      The planking, it actually a log home made with what are called "D" logs. So the inside is flat and the outside is rounded. Thank you for your kind comment!

    Just curious, do you consult about herbology at all? I know all the UA-cam disclaimers, talk to your doctor, etc. lol. But do you have any type of business where people can seek your advice for natural remedies, etc.?

    • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  Місяць тому

      I do not as this is illegal for anyone without a medical degree. All I'm legally able to do is teach and create formulas.
