I just watched a CNN special Nov 2022 called Roadrunner about the life of Anthony Bourdain and I felt compelled to leave a comment somewhere. Anthony - you were respected and loved and you are remembered ...
Boudain was angry at a lot of things because of his acute awareness. He was usually right when he raged. Certain things, like the persistence of political leadership defy the reason of an intelligent, well-traveled, progressive man. I wish we had leaders more like him. He understood humanity and how we are being exploited. It’s a heavy truth.
He was a lifetime Opiate addict, and admitted to being on Methadone for 8+ year's. I have known more than a handful of, Methadone addicts that never lived coming off of it. That alone make's me believe he didn't kill himself the way they say. He will be missed by alot of people, I never met the man' but considered him a friend. But if we met, we would have been friend's. Chris Cornell also...They were uncovering something "EVIL" and it led to both of thier Demise's. So effing sad the people responsible are still drawing breath.

I recently watched the Berlin Episode of parts unknown and always thought: there is a lonely introvert sitting around desperate extroverts who have nothing interesting to say. If you multiply this feeling over the years, I'm sure Bourdain felt more trapped than happy, by people wanting to be his friends. You don't want to be told how great you are when u have this kind of artistic disposition. You don't even care, you just care about the art. I think he was immensely successful in his shows, because parts of him never wanted to make them anyway. He let himself be instrumentalized to become the person he never was. Not the artist he hoped to be.

Depression is a complex condition and not well understood. It is different in each person; and it can be very resistant to treatment. Success, money, wealth, fame do not help a person who lives with depression. Many chronically depressed people fantasize about suicide which is a symptom of depression. It is a great loss to see someone who was beloved by so many end his life when so many years lay before him.
When I saw roadrunner and they played his all time favorite song, I about died. Of course it would be anemone by the Brian Jones town massacre. I think it's one of the greatest songs of all time. I miss you man, what a genuinely great soul you are.
years ago we were on vacation in NJ and NYC, one day we went to Little China and Italy, there was a restaurant called Hop Kee that you walk down a set of stairs below sidewalk level, while waiting for our order, In walks Bourdain, He was seated across from me and my now ex wife (a filipina ) we knew he was a chef at the time and asked him if he had ever been to the Philippines or ate filipino food. to which he responded yes, we talked for a bit about his experience there, he was a great guy, very expressive about things he enjoyed. When we finished eating and went to pay the bill, we noticed the numerous pictures on the wall of famous people who had been at the restaurant. Bourdain was on that wall so he must have eaten there regularly.. I enjoyed his tv shows and miss them.
Depression and anxiety is ruff health problems and drinking is even worse i go through depression really bad i don't know what all he went through but I do kinda understand
I could tell he was a asshole from the beginning but through the years of watching him I could see him grow personally and it was for the better, he actually became a better person I think we all have the ability to grow and learn from another and within ourselves. Hopefully people will remember him for the good things he's done and for the things he's went through and he has overcame.
I suffer from Anxiety and Depression. My life is one of poverty and is extremely mundane. Curses find me and cut me off at the knees. The more I try to be invisible, the more the demon people single me out and cause suffering. If I had an off switch I would be long gone - if only I could sleep and never wake up!

I think Anthony looked sickly before he passed. I see his face in photos and notice a markedly different look. Someone here said he was on methadone, is it any wonder how he went..not after hearing that. I was surprised and it's still sad.
Looks like he went the same way that most of them go. He would have known too much. And had a large following and so was heared. Basically he couldn't stop telling what he knew. Even if it was in riddles. A normal human being like him, you can't keep it too yourself. Basically he knew too much. And he was too open with it. So open and honest, that they had to stop him. Drugs can make a person tell others, stuff that is hard to digest. The public really don't care anymore anyways. Most people are so tuckered out and scared and starving. I think that he understood that he was going to be next because he became a whistle blower. And that is the price that he was willing to pay. But in the end, people have changed. They really just don't care anymore, if they ever did. God help us all
It's now 2023, and I still miss Tony. There is a hurt inside me, in my heart that stays with me. Tony and I were born the same year and I related to him when he spoke of rock bands he did and didn't like. I also like that he'd light a cigarette on camera. And he wasn;t shy about his saying the truth no matter what.
The sad thing is a lot of men do suffer in silence and it’s not talked about. Men are supposed to be “strong”. Something that needs to be talked about.
It's important not to underestimate the toll on sane people in the country over the past several years. We've been tested like seldom before, and on several levels! History is still being made. Hold onto yourself and what is important to you, it will be worthwhile.. And always, ALWAYS believe in yourself 🌛
There definitely is. I am in medicine, and having a history of recurrent major depression has been a bear to struggle with. I feel for Bourdain...loved him and his work, and am sad it ended this way.
He didn't die; he committed suicide! It is a selfish act of narcissism designed to hurt the people who love you and punish THEM for your sorry lack of a real life. I feel sorry for his daughter, too...sorry she had his sorry ass for a sperm donor.
Still missed 6 years on, No Reservations has just re appeared on a streaming channel of mine so i'm going to binge this great show and probably shed a tear or few because he is no longer with us. Greatly talented man, totally honest and flawed too but he was brilliant, iconic even and much loved, so watching him on TV again will be mostly joyful. Plus a good cry is good for the soul
Parts unknown and no reservations are both still to this day 2 of my top 5 favorite shows. I unfortunately wasn't surprised by his death at all. Anyone who is a huge fan and read his books etc shouldn't have been, he never hid his depression or struggles with substance and alcohol use. It made me very sad, it actually gave me the push me to finally get treatment for my alcohol, drug use, depression, and bi-polar diagnoses. Indirectly, he saved my life. He'll always have a place in my heart.

I miss him so much! I saw 2 episodes of parts unknown, never watched it but was a huge fan of no reservations. I learned so much form his shows, not just about food but of culture, the diversity of the people he visited. He can never be replaced. I loved his narratives in his show. Rest in peace!
There's been travel shows and there's been cooking shows as well as National Geographic specials that deal with far off lands but his shows captured the very best of all these things in a simple way that tipped its hat to the new journalism while at the same time keeping his focus on the people and cultures he was covering without falling into the trap of coming across as the "me me me" that so many practitioners of the new journalism have done. He created something unique and beautiful. I can only speak for myself but I have spent forty years in the service industry and watching Tony claw his way out of the kitchen and then shine a light on what life is like for many of us in the food business put a little wind in our sails and gave us some much needed dignity.
It's very difficult for brilliant people to battle with their own demons. As I watched the documentary roadrunner, there is a part of him that I can somehow relate to. The only difference is that he has access to everything he wanted. An enviable job, great family, fame and reverence but that isolation caused more harm than good I believe
I think knowing Anthony Bourdain would have been like knowing every other purposefully edgey, overly-opinionated, druggie and hypocrite that I have ever had the misfortune to be around. So what if he could cook? An asshole is an asshole whether he is the head chef at some clip joint fake ass French restaurant in New York City or peeing on the toilet seat in podunk Oklahoma! He's five years gone and who misses the jerk other than people just like him?
Being so aware of your existence and your reality can eventually become the perfect trigger for depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. If you don't loose up a bit, if you don't let yourself (yourself meaning mind and spirit) take a break from analysing and trying to find the meaning of every second of your live, you'll most likely end up depressed. But, for those of us living with that "super" awareness state of mind, loosing up isn't an easy task. I think the real pandemic we have to deal with are mental illnesses, anxiety and depression are, most likely, the most common health problem in the world. Anthony was a beautiful human being and a sensitive person, for that he'll always be missed and for that he'll never be forgotten.
Still miss him immensely. This is honestly the first things I have watched since his passing. I just could NOT deal with it. I too deal with depression. I wish he had gotten them help he needed. I know that my husband and I aren’t the only ones who still miss him and everything he contributed to the world. He was truly a beautiful and unique kind of genius who clearly had his demons, and we were so saddened and disappointed to learn of his death, but I think even people who didn’t know him knew that he was suffering for decades because it was so obvious in how he lived, like a live wire. My heart breaks for those who knew him personally.
Mental illness is not comprehensible to a neurotypical individual but I’m glad people are willing to listen. No amount of money success or fame can ease the suffering mind. Unfortunately most suffer without those accomplishments in poverty
He was a bit of a renaissance man. If he hadn’t become a chef turned author and travel guide, he could have been a stand-up comic, a professor, a career counselor, an ambassador. In reality, he was a little of all of those. Thanks for showing all of us some of the cultural and culinary wonders of the world. I didn't know much about him living in Finland.Then one day by accident,I caught his program and thought what the hell is this?I became addicted to all his shows,his friends,the places,the food and the music and his honesty.His history came later,his first book translated into Finnish and when he died,I had to go sit in my car and cry so my family would not see.He said it,the best job in the world and yet he let it go.Life is not always about what you see.
Anthony was too critical of himself. If he could have talked to a friend, like Eric Ripert, or another one of his close friends it could have made a difference. Just thinking about him in that hotel room all alone breaks my heart. I will always love him.

Why does it take the death of someone we love to alert us to the wider tragedy of suicide? I'm old, and I've seen many celebrities die. But when Bourdain died, it's like I lost a friend. RIP.
It was always my dream to meet him. He's the reason I volunteered to teach English to Myanmar refugees overseas for 6 months after his parts unknown episode. He was so down to earth and talked to people and genuinely cared about their story and I don't see that very much. I decided to name my son after him a month before he killed himself. Just shocked.

I think what really kept bourdain from seeking the help was his public persona. It probably made him think that any admittance of anything other than that persona, would come back to bite him when seeking the right help might have him with us today.
As a European, I only discovered Bourdain through You Tube about a month ago. I have been so impressed and entertained by his wit and personality, since then, and saddened to learn of his demise of some years past,already.. I would consider him the most influential culinary figure since reality cooking T.V. became popularised - more influential even than Ramsey, Marco Pierre White, or Jamie Oliver - and he has inspired me to experiment for hours in my kitchen, of late, with a deep desire to produce deicious meals - and I'm vegetarian! I would very much liked to have met him and been accepted as one of his circle of friends. Depression is such an unnecessary state of mind to to entertain.
Not a single word about Asia Argento. The woman he sacrificed friends and family for in support of her but who later betrayed him by cheating with a man much younger then herself. That appetite of hers was nowhere near satisfied though since she know is dating an even younger man (she´s 47 & he´s 26) which makes it obvious she needs to be in total control and a younger man is way more easy to manipulate. Asia was by the way the only person of significance who refused to be a part of the Roadrunner documentary. I think that speaks for itself.
True story. I started working in the kitchen in 1993, became a line cook in 1997, chef in 2006. Came to America in 2007, manage a Caribbean restaurant in Manhattan from 2009-2016, then another from 2018-2020. Until today, February 17, 2023, I've never Heard the name Anthony Bourdain, don't remember seeing his face anywhere, don't remember ever coming across no reservations, or parts unknown, even though travel channels are some of my favorites on UA-cam, and I watched a lot of UA-cam. However, I just rewatch a documentary from Jamaica, that I have watched many years ago and it turns out that he was the guy in the documentary. How strange is that?
And they never will, because in today's society "shut shaming" is way worse than a female sleeping with a 17 year old kid. If she had been a man she would literally be in prison. Especially during #metoo.

We feel all those emotions. Some of us keep those feelings inside, some can let it out over the stars, others can only write it down on paper or a digital device. I do believe that we all want and deserve to love and be loved. The road to those feelings is much longer for some, and those who travel the farthest, sometimes never reach the end.

Tony impacted my life and helped me find the strength to keep living. I just turned 61. Like Tony, please don't make a big deal of my departure.

I loved Anthony watched him all the time! My husband took his life, our daughter was 15 really sad still! It's been 9 years same year its 2023!
It's very difficult for brilliant people to battle with their own demons. As I watched the documentary roadrunner, there is a part of him that I can somehow relate to. The only difference is that he has access to everything he wanted. An enviable job, great family, fame and reverence but that isolation caused more harm than good I believe
I think knowing Anthony Bourdain would have been like knowing every other purposefully edgey, overly-opinionated, druggie and hypocrite that I have ever had the misfortune to be around. So what if he could cook? An asshole is an asshole whether he is the head chef at some clip joint fake ass French restaurant in New York City or peeing on the toilet seat in podunk Oklahoma! He's five years gone and who misses the jerk other than people just like him?

Being so aware of your existence and your reality can eventually become the perfect trigger for depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. If you don't loose up a bit, if you don't let yourself (yourself meaning mind and spirit) take a break from analysing and trying to find the meaning of every second of your live, you'll most likely end up depressed.
But, for those of us living with that "super" awareness state of mind, loosing up isn't an easy task.
I think the real pandemic we have to deal with are mental illnesses, anxiety and depression are, most likely, the most common health problem in the world.
Anthony was a beautiful human being and a sensitive person, for that he'll always be missed and for that he'll never be forgotten.
Still miss him immensely. This is honestly the first things I have watched since his passing. I just could NOT deal with it. I too deal with depression. I wish he had gotten them help he needed. The world is worse off without him. He was the every man's person who allowed us to escape all over the world thru food. RIP and thank you for all the memories

I hate when people like you say “get the help he needed” If you have deep depression, crippling depression, and anxiety there is no help. For some people in this world there is nothing to do about it.

I know that my husband and I aren’t the only ones who still miss him and everything he contributed to the world. He was truly a beautiful and unique kind of genius who clearly had his demons, and we were so saddened and disappointed to learn of his death, but I think even people who didn’t know him knew that he was suffering for decades because it was so obvious in how he lived, like a live wire. My heart breaks for those who knew him personally.

He was a bit of a renaissance man. If he hadn’t become a chef turned author and travel guide, he could have been a stand-up comic, a professor, a career counselor, an ambassador. In reality, he was a little of all of those. Thanks for showing all of us some of the cultural and culinary wonders of the world. An enterprising tour agency should put together a collection of world travel itineraries: in the footsteps of Anthony. Rest in peace good sir. I am rather certain you are on a great tour in the sky.

I didn't know much about him living in Finland.Then one day by accident,I caught his program and thought what the hell is this?I became addicted to all his shows,his friends,the places,the food and the music and his honesty.His history came later,his first book translated into Finnish and when he died,I had to go sit in my car and cry so my family would not see.He said it,the best job in the world and yet he let it go.Life is not always about what you see.
Anthony was too critical of himself. If he could have talked to a friend, like Eric Ripert, or another one of his close friends it could have made a difference. Just thinking about him in that hotel room all alone breaks my heart. I will always love him.
I suffer from self criticism,especially because of my difficult childhood.I thank God for my son who has managed to catch me at the moment it starts getting bad,and ells me to snatch out of it.

It was always my dream to meet him. He's the reason I volunteered to teach English to Myanmar refugees overseas for 6 months after his parts unknown episode. He was so down to earth and talked to people and genuinely cared about their story and I don't see that very much.
I decided to name my son after him a month before he killed himself. Just shocked.

I think what really kept bourdain from seeking the help was his public persona. It probably made him think that any admittance of anything other than that persona, would come back to bite him when seeking the right help might have him with us today.

As a European, I only discovered Bourdain through You Tube about a month ago. I have been so impressed and entertained by his wit and personality, since then, and saddened to learn of his demise of some years past,already.. I would consider him the most influential culinary figure since reality cooking T.V. became popularised - more influential even than Ramsey, Marco Pierre White, or Jamie Oliver - and he has inspired me to experiment for hours in my kitchen, of late, with a deep desire to produce deicious meals - and I'm vegetarian!
I would very much liked to have met him and been accepted as one of his circle of friends. Depression is such an unnecessary state of mind to to entertain.
Not a single word about Asia Argento. The woman he sacrificed friends and family for in support of her but who later betrayed him by cheating with a man much younger then herself. That appetite of hers was nowhere near satisfied though since she know is dating an even younger man (she´s 47 & he´s 26) which makes it obvious she needs to be in total control and a younger man is way more easy to manipulate. Asia was by the way the only person of significance who refused to be a part of the Roadrunner documentary. I think that speaks for itself.

True story. I started working in the kitchen in 1993, became a line cook in 1997, chef in 2006. Came to America in 2007, manage a Caribbean restaurant in Manhattan from 2009-2016, then another from 2018-2020.
Until today, February 17, 2023, I've never Heard the name Anthony Bourdain, don't remember seeing his face anywhere, don't remember ever coming across no reservations, or parts unknown, even though travel channels are some of my favorites on UA-cam, and I watched a lot of UA-cam. However, I just rewatch a documentary from Jamaica, that I have watched many years ago and it turns out that he was the guy in the documentary. How strange is that?

We feel all those emotions. Some of us keep those feelings inside, some can let it out over the stars, others can only write it down on paper or a digital device. I do believe that we all want and deserve to love and be loved. The road to those feelings is much longer for some, and those who travel the farthest, sometimes never reach the end.
Bourdain is that chaotic mix of wisdom, self loathing, irreverence and fearlessness that some seek at the bottom of a bottle.

Anthony didn't understand how abnormal his upbringing was. Internal demons are almost always a case of childhood abuse.
