NFPA Journal - Hazard Labeling Guidelines in NFPA 704

- NFPA's Guy Colonna explains a few key differences between the hazard labeling guidelines in NFPA 704, Identification of the Hazard of Materials for Emergency Response, and the new "globally harmonized" provisions adopted by OSHA.
Read more about the history of NFPA 704 and how NFPA and OSHA are working together to bridge the two approaches to hazard rating at www.nfpa.org/hazardwarning .
I understand this can be confusing, but there is also "class" vs. "category" for flammability. I would be more concerned with confusion on the differences adopted there, but I guess the severity of consequences is much higher in this scenario for laymen.
This is more of a "theoretical" than a practical concern. GHS Labels feature the Signal Word and the Pictograms. There is no requirement to put the GHS Hazard rating "number" on a Workplace label - where NFPA 704 labels are historically used. Therefore, there is no conflict.
I mean no disrespect, but the way he explains the issue between the GHS numbering system and the 704 numbering system is about 5 times more confusing than it actually is.
I understand he is speaking on the fly, but as a pre-recorded video I feel they could’ve done a retake.
I’m sure what he is explaining is understandable to those who ALREADY understand it, but his explanation sounds needlessly complicated for those who are new/learning these systems.
