      When I was growing up we had a guy from Japan come move in with us for a while and we lived on a farm but not like this one, we just had a horse, couple cows, chickens, and a small field. He was a super hard worker and he used to say all Japanese are hard workers lol. He shared a lot about Japan and I always wanted to go but never have gotten to.

      @@brucef310 So true! It’s so ridiculous to hear people endlessly complain about being tired of “remakes from Hollywood”’or whatever. Anyone who says that is openly admitting that that is all they watch (which is how they got sick of it). There are literally TONS of movies just like this one being made in North America, South America, Africa, Australia, Europe (east and west), Asia, and even parts of the Middle East. This is nothing new, but people continue to ignore it and then complain about the ‘bad’ Hollywood stuff THEY keep watching! 🙄 The writer of this film, Dave Boyle, is American and half-Japanese, and has been making movies JUST LIKE THIS ONE since 2006! So where were all the supposed Hollywood haters when he needed them? Now, he’s got Netflix’s House Of Ninjas under his belt, so suddenly anything else he does has higher visibility, but he’s been at this for a while. 👍

      Original, asides from the idea of a man from Tokyo being a modern-day cowboy in the west in a film called "Tokyo Cowboy". It was already done back in 1994.

    • @Coolestmovies
      @Coolestmovies 6 днів тому +1

      @@SweetZombiJesus That was a Canadian film, and a considerably different story. But yes, it was reasonably original at the time, but hardly the first ‘cross-cultural’ comedy-drama ever made. As I suggested, these kinds of smaller, independent movies have been around for decades. People who bemoan the lack of originality in “Hollywood” movies are simply watching too many Hollywood movies and don’t realize what else is out there. 😉

    I'm happy Japanese cinema and representation is having a resurgence in the west after the early 2000's J-horror craze from long ago.

    • @Coolestmovies
      @Coolestmovies 7 днів тому +10

      This is an American film. Japanese films never went away after the J-horror boom. A lot of excellent films have made it to these shores, via film fests, arthouse cinemas (the kind where Tokyo Cowboy has played), and even mainstream movie houses (depending on the size of your city). I was glad when the horror boom faded and we started seeing more Japanese films in North American from other genres. But at the end of the day, Tokyo Cowboy is fully American, but its secret weapons are writer Dave Boyle, who is part Japanese and has done a few cross-cultural films like this that are worth seeking out, and co-writer and star Ayako Fujitani (Steven Seagal’s daughter), a solid actress who rarely gets the credit she deserves. :)

      @@JohnDoe-pt7ru Exactly. My own collection of Japanese cinema (including some nice prints that cost me a pretty penny) dates back to the silent era, and certainly westerners have been aware of Japanese cinema since at least the 1950’s. The same goes for movies from a lot of countries. They’ve often landed on our shores, but too many people just bemoan “Hollywood” because that’s all they watch, until they ‘discover’ a trailer like this one. 😄

    I saw Tokyo Cowboy at the Omaha Film Festival back in March 2024. I loved it and it was my favorite feature film that I watched there, for reference I watched 3 feature films during that film festival.
    It had a lot of subtle and great humor, an interesting clash and blend of two different kinds of cultures with Japanese culture and Rural American culture, the main character saw some really nice character development, and the cinematography is excellent with many beautiful shots that were filmed on location in Montana. It's not often during feature films that the audience laughs as a whole in the theater, but there were at least a half dozen moments where the audience couldn't help but crack up and a lot of that was aided by the good acting and the good script direction I saw in the film.
    One other thing is that we get to see three different languages spoken in the film with English, Japanese, and Spanish. So we really do get to see many kinds of characters with various backgrounds come together in this film. The ending to the film was really good and the cherry on top that did a nice job of sticking the landing.
