    The saying "There's nothing new under the sun" has been replaying in my mind for a while now. I have been struggling with my creativity for a while and one of the things that really stopped me from creating is the idea that I have to create something that has never been done before or that's new, but the reality of that is near impossible. Doing things that have been done before is still being creative, it's really about putting your own spin on it and experimenting. I'm not saying to copy someone's work or style exactly, just wanted to put in that disclaimer in case anyone thinks I'm am :D Anyway that helped me a little and I hope it will help someone out there too :)

    • @hallease
      @hallease  3 роки тому +6

      Some of the best creative breakthroughs I’ve had were because I was actively trying to imitate someone else’s style. Here’s the thing though, you’re not them - so you’ll never do it. What usually happens is you stumble into a new variation of it, the “You” variation. It’s influenced by them, but it’s completely new and specific to you.

    I've been teaching myself to write guitar tablature. I wanted to play song (Peter Tosh: Jah Guide- acoustic version) but there weren't any tabs, so I started ear training and making the tablature myself. This is my first time ever doing this and it's coming along great! Feels like I just reached a new skill tier.

    I'm a Creative Writer. One kf my goals this year was to just write - not write, then edit, then agonize, then start over - just write. And it's causing me to have to confront the overly critical way I carry my creative self. I expect too much of her, and don't leave much room for her to just TRY. It's all about grace and giving myself the room I need to give my words a shot, however they appear on the page.

    Thank you for this. I am a creative that mostly expresses through writing. My creative process involves a lot of brainstorming until I have enough to pull a story together. I start the beginning and outline as I go since generally I know where I want to end up at the end of the story and major plot points. If I get blocked, I start working on another creative outlet that allows my brain to relax a bit. I love to crochet, so that is a really good one for me to relax until another idea sparks. I also have a bank of ideas and concepts across different notebooks that I can always refer to for inspiration.

    Completely agree, we're all creative. I think of creativity as a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger you become. What helps me get out of a "creative block" (which I don't believe in creative blocks but I understand when people use the term), I create without the attachment or idea of it having to be perfect or sharing it on social media. For me, this looks like pouring paint and an idea always comes after I just start. Love seeing the BTS in Patreon, thanks for sharing 💘

    I realized I stopped making the stuff I wanted to make and just did what people paid me to write. I need to remember that creativity like you said it doesn't stop. Experimenting doesn't stop nor should it.
    When I get stuck I write with my non dominant hand lol.
    It's probably placebo but I feel like it forces my overthinking impulses to slow down, then I get back to it.

    When I'm feeling stuck I do one of 3 things -
    1) Step Away. I'm gonna steal an analogy from Tim Mitchin - sometimes it's like an orgasm, if you think about it too hard it'll go away. Taking some time, taking a walk, doing something completely different, helps. I'll get stuck trying to figure out a data analysis, so I'll work on a video... and suddenly have an idea of how to process our cell masks (sorry, that makes more sense to nerds, I swear).
    2) Seek out thought porn- I look for creators or articles or ideas that don't seek to provide answers, but inspire the asking of questions. Also Curious Tangents, It's Radish Time, Adam Savage, Leena Norms, Cathy Hay, our Girl Evelyn, and, often, you. I feel like it's collecting intellectual kindling, you know? There's not enough there to keep the fire going forever, but sometimes all it takes is a spark... damn I'm getting all poetic... I should probably go to bed soon, which brings me to my next one actually
    3) Sleep - A lot of times I'll sit down to "meditate", end up taking an accidental nap, and, other than completely screwing up my sleep schedule, have managed to have an idea. Sometimes you just need to let go to help things come and, when you're frustrated or feeling stuck, it can be hard to do that consciously. So instead let your subconscious do the work for you.
    4) Surprise bonus round I just thought of - Start. I get stuck, so I just start to do the thing. I'll write, re-write, sketch, crumple it up and throw it away, fiddle with video edits, whatever. For me, sitting down to start is usually the hardest part. If I can cross that hurdle, I've got a 50/50 shot... which is better than zero.
    *I just gotta say, very proud of myself for being all coherent and sculpting words so there are 4 s's. Also, I am VERY tired... and I'm gonna nap now...
    **Lofi... lofi helps get in the zone, especially a little chill hop or steel drum

    When you're in a creative block don't try to create. I do housework but I think anything that gives your mind a break will work. I'll watch a movie or read a book and something will ignite a spark. You have to trust the process. Also thinking about having to pay my bills makes me very creative! Sometimes that spark is under your backside and it's all that's needed.
