Ya gotta give the 30 yr? Old Ultra's some credit. They didn't leak, and you could upgrade their weaknesses. They were dependable. I totally understand how now they are sub par, compared to the gtrs but back in the day you could actually race and win with Ultra's because of their dependability and with losi springs, super tunable. Awesome seminar, I learned so much about how versatile the gtrs are😁👍
I think the Ultras are often maligned but are pretty dependable and decent compared to other rtr shocks. I mean, my Arrma came with those annoying shocks with built in dirt guards and shock ends that keep popping off! With ti shafts and aluminum caps, the Ultras are decent. I drill a hole in the side of the cap and run an emulsion setup. I even use AE shock ends/spring cups and their springs, for full tuneability.
Thanks so much for this video. I bought the big bore and THEN saw this video (before I opened them). Took the big bore back and got the GTR. Ordering the springs you suggested as well.
Big bore shocks are a massive upgrade, first of all they got more volume, second of all they are way more durable, the cap doesn’t pop off, the shaft don’t bent and they have excellent value. I do agree that the GTR shocks are better but the big bore shocks are definitely an big upgrade
Just got my first rc, a slash 4x4 for $70 from a guy who has no idea what he had. This thing has an arma 6s ESC, castle brushless motor and 4s spektrum LiPos. Just upgraded the suspension arms, camber/toe links, servo components, new wheels/tires. I’ve been jumping this thing 10ft+ to flat ground with the stock shocks for 2 months now😂😂 it’s only a matter of time I guess LOL
I know this is an older video but the advice and results stand true. I went with the linked GTR shocks and orange springs on my new 4x4 stampede. I'm new to real RC cars and like to treat them how I wish we could survive in cars. Bash and jumps. on a simple ramp of maybe 3 feet of air I was blowing the factory shock's shock caps almost every session. The GTRs with Orange springs and 50wt oil front 60wt oil rear have worked well for me. I know the oil may be heavier than what others use but I have no idea what I'm doing and got a 2oz (each) pack from 50 - 100wt oil. Again this setup is working for me and I am no longer destroying shock caps! I'm up for suggestions about any further tweaks to keep my shocks relatively safe from jumps. I would love to go bigger/higher jumps. Thanks again for the great tips! Also, I don't know if it matters, but the linked Orange springs are two different colors. One is kinda a titanium orange and the other is black. It doesn't bother me but just a note.
To my understanding heavier oil for higher jumps thicker the higher softer for crawling etc racing maybe mid way but I’m only learning now please correct me with info 😊
I put the GTR on my Slash 2wd, with RPM arms, the bottom shock mount was too big for them or the Traxxas arms, so I had to Dremmel them out quite a bit to make the ball fit
Thank you! I've been thinking about upgrading the suspension in my Rustler, but I still don't understand the spring rate and how it relates to the cars performance. Maybe I just need to buy several sets and play around with them.
Awesome video! I've been researching this a lot lately and this video combines everything I've learned into one place. I'll definitely be ordering GTRs now.
I’ve always loved running the powerstrokes. I run them on my granite right now and the dual rate is phenomenal on it for the abuse I’ve put that poor truck through. What shock would you suggest for a lcg slash 4x4? Clay track.
I see you mentioned the sizes to buy for that vehicle, what size do you recommend to buy for slash 2wd LCG, and Slash ultimate, thank you for your time.
upgraded the driveshafts on my hoss to the tekno. It's a good idea to upgrade to the aluminum hexes. These large tires and 3s seem to eat up the poly hexes.
Awesome helpful video! I have one question, what oil sets and springs should I run front and rear if I'm riding a mixture of them all, sand, skate park, street?
@@slick2500 did these TRAXXAS go on as if they were stock I’m looking to change the shock on an ecx torment also but not sure which will fit like stock and work well 🤔🎯 thanks
great video really helpful you said you need shock oil but the shocks actually come with oil unless you want to put in different better oil just saying but still a great video thanks
I am running my fireteam 1:7 arrma and it’s getting heavy. What would you recommend upgrading too? Or should I just upgrade the springs? I mainly just bash, run in dirt grass road, but jump it high 20’ ish
Unfortunately i bought the big bore shocks. Do the stiffer traxxas GTR springs fit on all of the Traxxas shock? Just want to try the blue spring rate on the shocks I have already. Thanks!
Installed the GTR shocks and Orange Tekno springs on our Hoss as per your recommendation. Is the Traxxas fluid any good? I notice Traxxas bottle doesn't say what weight. We also have 37.5 associated fluid to try. The setup with Tekno orange springs and traxxas fluid still seems kind of soft for the Hoss still, might have to try the red springs. Any suggestion on preload on these for the Hoss ? It seems they require quite a bit of preload on the rear to stop it from dropping too low. Thanks
are the Proline Pro-specs any better than the Traxxas GTRs?... is it worth the money? What about the TLR G3s?... what size and do you think its worth the money? Thanks for the advice and for the great content.
Greetings first thank you for your wonderful service you do an excellent job on your channel !!! What springs would you recommend for the Hoss going with the GTR shocks that you recommend. I do mostly skateboard parks where you can get some nice height. Thank you 🤩🤩🤩
Great video Razor! How do the Tekno spring rates compare or differ to the Losi TEN Spring rates? Any idea? I have a Stamp4de truggy w/GTRs on it that I'm going to race at my local track. I've got a whole set of Losi springs. Thanks.
they just fit better and have a stiffer range overall. I think the Losi's cap out at like 4.2 lbs/in., while the Teknos cap out at 5.9 lbs/in. in the front.
Great overview! I see Traxxas has a variable damping kit (part 5461) for the GTR shocks. Any idea what conditions this would help with or if its worth while?
I currently have that variable dampening kit installed on my Rustler 4x4. You would need to modify it a bit but they fit and work great. The only problem I have is the rear still slaps hard on jumps. I’m running the VG racing springs, 60w shock oil all around on my 9 lb rig.

Yeah ok buddy
I've tried a ton of different shock options on 2wd and 4wd Traxxas vehicles. I like the GTRs with AE springs or even the AEs themselves.

Which shocks would you recommend for the 10th scale rally? mostly run on asphalt and low grass.
Did you ever find shocks? I have a asphalt Rally and looking for shocks also.
I have proline powerstroke shocks on my rustler they are great.
How would one know which shock is compatible? Is it just length? Or what else do I need to consider?

i only run the proline power stroke on my 2wd slash
Tekno reds plus 40 weight for general bashing an occasional air time? Gonna be setting up a set of these for my stampede 4x soon
Try Tekno orange 50mm front and Tekno red 63mm rear. 37.5 front, 40 rear.
