- Even with limited space you can build a wicking bucket that will require minimum time and effort for watering. Self watering container buckets are super easy to put together and will last for years producing tomatoes, stawberries or any produce you want in a very small area. These 5 gallon buckets only require 3 things to make and anyone can make them in minutes.

I zip-tied a small piece of window screening to the top of my fill pipes. You can still water through the screen, but mosquitoes can't get in.
I did the same thing for my furnace's intake and exhaust pipes.
thats a great idea....thanks
Also a tour of your garden would be awesome! It looks amazing
Thanks for your suggestion...yes i plan on doing that soon.
At 5:15 you had a common and easily solvable issue. After you tighten the chuck onto the drill bit turn it slightly back the other direction and it will click and lock. No more drill bits falling out!
Nice video! I’d love to see an update in a few weeks. Simple and fast design too👌
Thanks so much...yes i plan on updating all videos.
This is brilliant!!!
Thanks so much....
Great job
Amizing great job
Your too kind...thanks much!!!
Thats sure a lot of work.
I just set my buckets into 18quart dishpans.
Working great.
!
That's good, but what's the dishpan price compared to his design? Also, the bottle watering system can probably be used in raised beds and planting bags. A dishpan can't do that.
That is awesome!
Can we use that wicking tub for growing lemons?
Doesn't the soil block the drain holes in the bucket and in the wicking bottle
Certain potting mix you need to have
So how long do you wait to pour more water in since you can't see it? I usually test the soil with my finger but would that still work using your wicking method?
Depends on temps, sun exposure, plant size, etc. I would recommend a moisture meter. Takes out the guesswork.
Stick a small dowel into a wine cork and place it in the fill pipe before filling with water. Mark the dowel at the top of the pipe and then add water The dowel should float up. When it drops to the line on the dowel, you know the water has been all wicked up
I think your brilliant in all this! Is there any ideas If you were factoring in recycled and any potential material that isn't included in forever chemicals or that doesn't have residual PFAS issues? Any help goes a long way 🙏
I wanted to use food grade buckets sold at lowes or home depot (out of stock). So yes I think that maximizing the safety of produce growth is paramount. Thanks for your comment.
I’m using large tubs that salt lick for cows comes in..found a stack of them in brother’s barn that I painted terracotta color. I’ve already drilled holes in bottom so gonna have to go with it and use stick to ck water level but I’m planting small slow growing trees in tubs that I will prob at some point transplant. Thank you for demonstration. I’m feeling more confident about project.
Walmart will give you the icing buckets that they usually throw away. You have to wash them several times but for free can't complain. Also firehouse subs sells bucks for $3 from their pickles.
you said you didn't poke holes at the very bottom in order to leave a reservoir. What's the point of the reservoir of water if it can't get to the soil though?
Sorry for the confusion...I want the bottle to maintain some water as to give extra moisture to the entire bucket.
TYM! What size of pvc did you use? TYMIA
the pipe size was 1 inch. The water bottle was 88 brand alkaline water. thanks for your question.
How often did you need to refill the strawberry plant ❤
it depends on outside temps but on average 4-5 days
The drain holes are 5"-6" above the bottom of the bucket, what if the roots and stem grew all the way down to the bottom of the bucket where there will be water that don't get drained out?
In the summer months water consumption will be at its maximum....hope that clarifies.
How many strawberries will that plant produce?
Depends on type, sunlight, fertilizer….too many variables for exact amount.
Yes i dont get why theres a bottle needed - just bury the pvc & water thru the top of the pvc maybe several times & water sd seep thru the holes - I’d rather the plant roots have more soil - the huge bottle takes up too much room!😊
Good point!!!
Sir, doesn't the plants face ROOT ROAT problem once plants root reached the water level? Also we can't change the soilmix or root pruning process once a year?
you can alter the level of the drainage hole and also you need to change out the soil once per year....thanks for your comment.
@@ZenGardenOasis. yes I'm looking for this reply sir. Actually I saw many videos but no one told for soil changing.
Not for fruit trees,right?
I think the root system might become too large. If its a dwarf variety you could try a 7 gallon bucket or extra large tub with become too large. If its a dwarf variety you could try a 7 gallon bucket or

Water can go stagnant and can become a bigger problem . I`would ditch the bottle, and just settle for a larger pvc pipe with holes drilled into the pvc Pipe .. It would require regular filling .. Any gardener that does not monitor his plants regularly is a failed gardener.. Shortcuts dont always work
true.....excellent advice
