Nice job on the workbench. I worked professionally in a wood shop for many years and the workbench was great. It was a big one 4' feet wide and 8' feet long and skimmed with a full sheet of 3/4" MDF. Ive only just started watching your channel, I really like your approach to building things its very much like mine. I get much more satisfaction out of using something I built to my own H.D. specs than most factory made things. I love the effort you put into the work bench, but I have to say one thing - im a nut for diagonal support, and it seems this bench is uber strong on the vertical except for say if somehow it needed to take side force by accident, looks like its vulnerable as theres no "racking" support on the diagonal. Please correct me if im wrong, its just something ive always been a fanatic about. Im also a fanatic about over building things strength wise, I get satisfaction doing this as I know I can build way more sturdy than most factory made stuff. I have a 6' bench I built years ago in the basement thats so overbuilt I know now I really over did it-lol legs are treated 4x4s and the rest is a combination of 2x6's, 2x12's and 2x4's with serious diagonal bracing and a drawer in the middle similar to how your describing. On the back is a tempered pegboard with the heavier guage hooks etc. and a large 8" Tekton bench vise that has turned out to be much better quality than I expected and an old heavy pipe fitters vise on the other corner, again over done. But I do realize your goal was to build on a budget with good bang for the buck for the person just starting out, so im not saying all this to take away from your excellent work, on the contrary that bench top is a thing of beauty, a genuine family heirloom-! lol My drill press and bench grinder are on separate stands since the two large vises take up each corner, again one should probably go--lol

  • @cjemhardt
    @cjemhardt 4 роки тому

Very nice project! You should finish the underside of the bench with the same finish you used in the top. It equalizes the surfaces of both sides and helps stop warping. Yes, the legs will keep the top stable but good practice when making flat surfaces out of wood.

I worked at a shop a few years ago. The bench the old owner made had 3 heights. About 6 feet of a good height for sitting down with a chair. About 12 feet of about belly-button height for stand up work and about 6 feet of about mid chest height. I was amazed how much time I stood up at the highest level doing finicky small engine work. Excellent height for seeing exactly what I was working on without being bent over a low bench

I've had some very painful experiences with drawers under workbenches. How about a nice dovetail box that can sit on top of the bench to hold the current project parts and pieces. You could make a couple of handles to put on the top - ends.

Thank you for sharing your work with us. My Grandfathers workbench (I believe its from the late 1920s or 1930s) is still in our workshop. He added a drawer, which is roughly 18 inches wide, roughly 19 inches deep and 5.5 inches in height, which is solidly build. 2 feet sounds nice, but I am wondering weight wise, if that is too big? Maybe two drawers instead? Also it has a sort of recess (or divot?) at the opposing side over the whole length of the side with the vice, roughly 3 inches deep with a width of 5 inches to hold small things.

Nice to see a bench build that the average DIY home owner can tackle. I've seen so many of these builds that just boggle the mind in their cost and complexity, requiring a level of skill that is way beyond my meager ability, along with tools and machinery that I would have to mortgage my house to purchase, (even if I did know how to use them). Sometimes all you need is something simple and sturdy to pound on.

    Great videos. Thank you!
What do you think about putting casters at the bottom of the legs. I’m thinking on building a smaller version of this bench. About 30” x 48” but I would like to be able to move it around. Not lots of room in the garage. Thanks!

I wish I had thought of this earlier. Take a picture of the bench top on top of your timber framed saw horses and a picture of the bench top on the steel legs and have a channel poll to see which one people liked the best. My vote would have been for the timber framed saw horses. Bruce from the City of Orange in Orange county Calif.

extra drawers ( all along the front ) are a great idea - it might also help if you installed some cross bracing along the back for extra lateral strength - a simple 2X4 bolted on diagonal corners would be simple effective and cost friendly

I think the statics come together if you put the leg between the four bolts, exactly under the anvil surface. If you just support one side of the screw that's gonna give you a little bending moment while hammering, which reduces the force you put on the work-piece.

I love your channel, and this series of videos intrigues me very much. This would make a perfect reloading bench.

Suggestion Cody, have you considered a long gated box shape pull out drawer under vise on other side of leg vs tray type pull out drawer? This way you don't sacrifice leg room you may need sitting there while working in the corner using the vice? Nice job on bench!

The drawer is a fantastic idea! It would be very handy to keep common tools.

Do you plan for any cross bracing for the legs to remove the side wobble?

Someone commented about the lower shelf but that will not eliminate the side to side since parallelogram, needs some triangles for rigidity. Cheers

Hi, I do enjoy watching you do your various projects and wonder about several things. Not likely that I've seen your earliest videos, so don't have the whole story. How do you have time and money for all those projects, acquire all that new equipment, and make a living? Also, a small point about your pilot drill size selection. I'm a tradesman, and was taught when selecting a drill bit to drill a pilot hole, to select an "off size", instead of the 1/8" use 9/64 or 11/64 and keep the 1/8, 1/4 & 3/8 in top condition for the times you needed those for bolt holes etc. Not to be picky, just to relate what some of the old tradesmen thought. Good projects!!

Nice setup on the bench and hearing the baby say bye bye papa at the end was too precious.

Do you think that the drawer would get in the way right by the vice if you want to sit and do fine carving or file type of work

You should have a sweet loaf ink hand print on the table or in the drawer dated ?

Awesome bench. I’ve been wanting to build one for the past few months. This will be the one that I will build. I still haven’t found brand X on Amazon or at Home Depot. Where can we find brand X?? 😎 God bless you and your family.

You should number the episode like workbench 1 2 3 would be easier to get back at it in the future. Anyway it is really inspiring I probably start my own workbench soon. Do you think I could rebuild transmission in a bench like that or I should cover it in steel?

I think drawers all the way across would look great. Also you should do an inlay of your wranglerstar logo on the bench for jack.
