I'm still putting mine together. Got it Thursday afternoon. It's been 3 days now. But, I like to do it a couple of bags at a time, to savor the enjoyment of building it.
Love this set. Actually it's the first set I've picked up in 12 years (since I was a kid) and boi was I impressed. I presonally love the technic look and aesthetic as it makes it look utilitarian and functional (which it is with all the functional moving parts it has haha). And I have to agree that the size is absurd with the wings out but I personally display it with the wings folded as I personally like the way it looks. But yeah I think this set is a more of "to theirs, their own" set. I love dune, I love lego, and this set blew my expectations out of the water. Especially as my first set in years.
I found it refreshing to hear someone else being a bit critical of the aesthetic, as I've been getting a lot of pushback when voicing my own opinions of the compromised look. I feel like it's Lego making a function-over-form choice generally speaking, and I would've preferred the opposite (given that I build primarily for display and not play). But, I can appreciate Lego's choice, as the word play is literally in their name (Leg Godt - play well). On a side note, I'm curious as to why Lego hasn't offered us studless wedge plates...i.e. tiles...yet, since they've been creating cleaner looking, almost studless models for years now. I feel like a smoother exterior surface texture would go a long way towards cleaning up the look of this particular set.
The biggest issue for me with the design (which I love) is that the look of it all could be improved, SO easily. All LEGO has to do is change the technic pieces from what ever color that is to black or gray. In fact, I have personally ordered from pick-a-brick "replacement" pieces for some of the technic (in black and gray to fit the design), HOWEVER LEGO doesn't make sell all the technic pieces in other colors, ney, they don't MAKE them and have NEVER made them in other colors than the "stock" blue or red or what ever. My "mod" will definitely look better with less strange colors, but alas, it won't be perfect, because LEGO doesn't want to.
They purposefully color lock a lot of their technic elements to A) help make finding the elements easier and B) make it easier to assemble, something many people clearly need as I’m astounded with how many people had difficultly building this
Yeah, I know but me personally think that a display model (kinda) aka 18+ set, you would think they would rely on the further developed prefrontal cortex of adults to be able to figure out where to place the pieces. (that's a joke btw, some of it...) @@h2owl205
All the red pins makes it not look clean, Jang swapped it with grey ones and it became increasingly cleaner. I recommend checking it out on his review :) Personally, I am not into dune, but will buy it because of its functions.
Really don’t understand how people are struggling to assemble this. Like guys, it’s Lego technic. You’re not building a space shuttle. Just follow the instructions and use just an ounce of concentration.
Mine came in the mail on Sunday, funny enough in a every similar box as your's did. I want to do a complete color delete with mine. Any piece that can and should be black will be black.
Color delete or color substitutions. For every piece that stands out that is red, blue, yellow or what have you, they have to be black, gray, etc... That's how it should have been in the first place.
Production quality is top tier, always look forward to your reviews. Saw the set in person, way bigger than expected. I agree with you, it’s not as sleek as I would like, but I think overall design is still good enough where I want one. And the minifigures are really nice. But I totally respect your opinion
I think the mechanisms involved make it a really cool set, it would be really cool if they designed maybe a smaller scale set that is more accurate focusing on looks/aesthetics 🤷♂️
Love your reviews. Great presentation scale and good balance between objective and subjective input. But the editing... The editing and overall production is next level! Among the best produced videos on UA-cam, in any genre.
Nice intro! I love the production value of the channel. This is obviously a play model first display second. I hate display models that you are terrified of taking off the shelf. This one you can hand to someone with no fear. I thought those Star Wars sets you showed look like junk compared to this.
There is also something to the aesthetics of a techniс when it is integrated harmoniously into conventional models. In this case, bright elements obviously interfere the most, but they are also needed for color accents so that the model does not look too boring. Another thing is that these bright connectors themselves could be of other colors, but the palette of techniс here is very limited. If I ever buy this ornicopter, I will order colored connectors separately from Ali. Available in metallic silver, dark tan and similar colors. As for placement - I'm going to place the ship on the wall. I have the 2018 X-Wing and 2013 Gunship placed in the same way.
I recently got this set and I'm a massive fan of it after seeing it in person. I think it is fair to say they could have put a little more effort into the aesthetics and towards disguising the technic aspects, however I do think the functions and how perfect they operate paired with the amazing minifigures and overall exclusivity of the set make it an absolute win for me.
This is clearly a mechanical set, but you view it through the lens of a display piece. That seems somewhat unfair to me. LEGO has its limits, every set is a compromise. This set will appeal to people who appreciate both exterior and mechanical design.
It’s being advertised as a display model, being part of the Icons theme. I have all right to view and critique it as such. Yes, LEGO has limits, but here it was a deliberate choice. One that I personally disagree with. Thats not the truth, just my opinion.
I really want to try and display mine from the ceiling with some fishing lines I think 2 side by side in a flight mode would look incredible on display and help get rid of that technic look (hopefully)
This set is insane! I loved building it. For only 10 bags it took me a while to build. I will agree that its not very display worthy unless you have a ton of space. It’s so big once the wings are out
Lego should include you in their marketing team and advertising team. The quality of this video is just too good to ignore. Absolutely flawless video mate!!!

Amazing quality. Also something that people are overlooking because (rightly) the focus is on the mechanism - the number of mini figures. If it was a star wars set the total number would be outrageous!
@@BrickBuiltBennyit’s the inclined /sloping piece under the rear wing. You can see it at the time stamp. Or is that just dust that got captured by the camera since it’s super detailed haha
About a year ago I built my first Technics Lego set. It was a sports car of course but that's not important. OMG I've never sworn so much to myself during a Technics build. The build had all the Technics stuff like linkages and gears that allow the steering wheel and gear changer to work. Hands down the hardest thing I've ever built.....ever. I won't be going back to the Technics sets but will stick with basic builds. I know some of the traditional brick sets may incorporate functions that have some of the Technics parts but hell no on any future Technics.
I bought this set last Friday at the Intertoys for €134,99 and stored it at my girlfriend's house. I'm gonna stay at here place for a week to take care of her and her cats after her operation. So the second week of March I will be building it. I'm very excited to built it and hang out with the love of my life❤. I also think the looks could be better but it's Lego so you can always change and modify. I'm also curious about the Dune 2 and I also have the Dune movie with David Bowie in my DVD collection
I love this set. Had a blast building it with my GF. Infact im still improving /modding it after I finished with flat tiles ect.. I actually changed all colored parts that would show on the outside.
I have the same opinion. The mechanisms are great, but the appearance didn't impress me that much. However, I think that it would be enough to mask it with tile bricks on the sides. 🙂
So basically you never liked Technic and now you are forced to review a studded Technic set. And that's your critique to a brilliant set that guides us the way to more sets like this.
Yes, but like I explain, don't let that stop YOU from loving the heck out of this set. It's objectively impressive. It's just not my personal taste/style, which is sad because of how big of a fan I am of the vehicle in-universe.
Even though I haven’t seen the movie judging by its design and the reference I think it’s a solid set if you like Dune but if you don’t like technic don’t get it
The level of video production is beyond praise! I agree about the model, it has very cool functionality, but its aesthetics are controversial, unless you accept that it’s a Lego Technic, then questions about aesthetics disappear.
I think that the 18+ tag was because of the movie and for better selling, but in all reality it’s kinda more of a playset, you don’t normally see icons with THAT many complex elements
Only thing what bothered me was wings being bent, so 4 wings on one side are looking down and other 4 on other side looking up (curve). At first I thought that I have made mistake, and mixed them up, but then I realized that all 8 of them are the same and the bent was dependent on what side they were put.
I’ve watched a few videos and people keep complaining about it having Technic parts. Why Lego builders not like Technic? I have this set and I love it.
If you’re a fan of the regular lego system, it’s a very different experience in building and looks. It’s just a preference thing, just like some technic fans might dislike the regular lego system
i wonder what this set will be going for once it's retired in a year or two? I bet in five years it'll be commanding prices of $1000 or more. Not that many Dune collectibles out there in the first place and just knowing that a company like Lego did this, is just mind blowing. I bought mine but haven't built it yet. I am sourcing replacement parts now for all of the Technic pieces that are bright red, blue or anything else that looks totally out of place.
🌼I really like this set, especially for the selection of minifigures; the Baron is a unique and spectacular minifigure, but my favorite is Lady Jessica.♡ They captured one of the most beautiful looks of her character in the movie and I appreciate that they included the second face and hair, in order to make the character customizable with other looks!♡ As always great review!🌼
Probably the studs can be improved by covering them with smooth pieces. But in the end this is Lego and not a like for like model. This in my opinion is incredible from an engineering point of view and that is its value.
I don't understand why reviewers keep saying this was a challenging build and then finishing it way faster than I did. I didn't think it was particularly difficult, but it took me at least 6 hours to put it together and I felt like I was making good time while I did it. I wasn't taking a lot of breaks or anything. I honestly find it difficult to understand how anyone could do this in 2 hours.
Everyone does things (and builds lego) at their own pace, I guess I'm just fast then? Saying it's challenging is just relative to other sets. It doesn't mean it's ''difficult'' or anything, it just takes more care and attention than regular ''studs on top'' techniques.
It took me about the same amount of time as you to build it. I thought it was relatively easy, especially after building the UCS Millennium Falcon. Now that was challenging.
I didn't completely like the way it looked when I saw the initial pictures. I thought the middle was too bulky, and sort of still do, but then I watched the movie again and I think it just captures the over all essence very well. And with those functions I can forgive some of the technic stuff showing through. I personally don't even have much of a problem with technic pin holes on the sides, but obviously the red pins should probably be replaced with black ones. On top of all that, I've seen people's attempts at making MOCs of the Dune Ornithopter, and even though they have none of these functions they look almost objectively worse. Not to mention the structural integrity. Sure, Lego was able to make some new pieces for this and that might be one of the reasons, but still I do think this is a masterpiece of a Lego set and say what you want but to me it looks good. It's that "it looks badass" first impression that should be focused on. Imagine if this was a pure technic build instead which they could've also done since they focused on the functions I feel like. This looks 100 times better than what something purely technic could've looked in my opinion. They took this difficult shape to design from Lego, added all these functions into it and kept the size still minifigure scale. I think it's just impressive.
I'm the perfect target demographic for this. I love Dune ever since reading the books as a kid. I especially was always fascinated by the Ornithopters. I did build my own Ornithopter back in the da out of my old Lego Space sets (I had an M-Tron Ornithopter, lol). I also love the Villeneuve movie adaptation and of course I love Legos. So this set was a no brainer for me. I also always liked Technic sets, so no issues there. I will probably mod the set however. For one, I really hate all the rainbow colours that Lego uses these days in their sets and which always stick out like a sore thumb. Here, it's mostly the red ball joints and the blue pins, but also some yellow or lime pieces which have been used on the inside. This is an 18+ set, so you'd think that the customers will be able to handle a set without colourful pieces. It's a shame that I have to fix this myself. Especially since other colour variants of those pieces do exist. I'm also in the middle of designing a new tail which is sleeker, longer and more accurately resembles the movie Thopter. I will have to see if it will be as sturdy as the standard tail section (my construction is a bit crazy, but I hope that it'll work). If that works, I'll also try to make the central section sleeker without sacrificing any of the functionality. That second part will also be tough. While it will be easy to slap on tiles, slopes and wedges, there's only so much one can do to close the gaps. Particularly the folding mechanism does require some leeway. While you can potentially close large parts the gaps, there is no obvious way for how to secure the pieces, as the central section consists mainly of liftarms. So we'll see how well that will work. Anyway, despite these issues, I really like the set. Probably my favourite Lego set in a very long time (other than the Star Wars UCS sets, but they're disqualified on price alone). I'm not the biggest minifig-guy, but I do also enjoy the included minifigs. Particularly Lady Jessica is awesome. I appreciate what they did with the Baron Harkonnen, but it doesn't work for me. The cloth piece should at least have been black on both sides as there's no way of the back side not sticking out. All the other minifigs are really good though. It's a bit of a shame that Dune doesn't lend itself to have more Lego sets. The scales are just too big. Some battle packs with Harkonnen and/or Atreides soldiers or Sardaukar and/or Fremen would be cool, but it likely will never happen.
Honestly i love it it give off the feel of a machine and the moving technics parts are sick . and this is just me i love the mono tone its kinda my style , wayy to expensive though i wont be buying until i can afford to
I’d have to agree, it’s a not very well disguised technic set. But for someone like me that’s good. I prefer to build large standalone vehicles like the creator expert/Icons cars and technic vehicle sets. So this was great for me as it was a decent amount of detail but with technic functionality, much like the Land Rover Defender Icons set. What wasn’t so great for me was the minifigures. Sure if you’re into minifigures and city building they look great. But I’m not. I do have minifigures for some of my stuff, a UCS ATAT full of Snowtroopers for example. Otherwise the closest I get to minifigures is building Albo.Lego’s mega figure designs! However this gave me an advantage with this set. I purchased it as a preorder in November along with another set. Consequently I got both the GWPs and all the points at the time (was a double weekend). Plus I already had points which I used to buy the set. After selling off the GWPs, the other set I bought (at a slight profit) and once I sell on the minifigures from the set, it will have brought the cost of this down significantly for the 150 rrp. And I won’t have to worry about storing minifigures I just don’t need! 😂 I love the functions, it’s why I bought the set. Just how they managed to pack it all in is incredible. And the looks and inaccuracies don’t bother me, but that’s probably because I haven’t seen the film (I liked the original so…🤷).
Great review. The set is having the opposite effect on me, honestly the more I look at it, the more I like it and I love the functionality. Aesthetics are great and nice to display, but honestly, I really only notice them when I focus on my shelves as well, so much of muchness for me. However, I will agree that I prefer the front facing look over the side, so will attempt to display it that way. The pins etc I will swap out (at the cost of a $1 or 2) however, I completely agree with Lego's decision to make them red and blue for building. Just reading some of the complaints on ordinary Lego sets and the difficulty people have building, I can only imagine the ongoing customer service issues Lego would have to endure if they didn't differentiate for the non-experienced builder who just picked this up from the shelf having never built a technic set and giving it to their 10 year old because their child is a "genius". (I worked in customer service during Uni so am somewhat cynical).
I agree with you. There Is something in the aesthetic that misses the mark with this kit. But I bought it because I love the source material so much and Dune merch is rare … excellent review !
It would be interesting to see a photoshop video on your other channel of you designing a sci fi ship or some kind of sci fi technology/ civilization. Great video!

It took me about the same amount of time as you to build it. I thought it was relatively easy, especially after building the UCS Millennium Falcon. Now that was challenging.
How is this the only Benny video I haven’t seen yet… and right after I buy the Ornithopter set😂
Sick editing and effects, bro!
sir your review is amazing
OH MY GOD! Absolute legend! What an incredibly made review!
i don’t know if i’m the only one who has this problem or if i built the ornithopter wrong, but opening the doors always causes them to break
Honestly i love it it give off the feel of a machine and the moving technics parts are sick . and this is just me i love the mono tone its kinda my style , wayy to expensive though i wont be buying until i can afford to
Until today I thought the Baron is a tall minifigures. Didn't know these were all capes, not bricks.
I'm suprised that no one talk about the very short Wings 🤔
The wings are relatively screen accurate and have the correct length in relation to the body.
I love the functions, it’s why I bought the set. Just how they managed to pack it all in is incredible. And the looks and inaccuracies don’t bother me, but that’s probably because I haven’t seen the film (I liked the original so…🤷).
Turtleneck goes crazy😯 great review benny💪
My issue is I can get the Delorean with more pieces, more aesthetics, and more enjoyable time
ur the best youtuber i have ever seen, i almost only watch you😊
My man remembered he had a Lego channel
I did lol
flawless review. Great to see the king of Lego back!
will you make more star wars reviews in the future?
Love your photoshop videos, and am a huge LEGO fan. Keep up the great work, Benny! Your production level is insane
That was an Awesome video! Great job on it
I’ve been waiting for the next video!
I agree with you. There
Is something in the aesthetic that misses the mark with this kit. But I bought it because I love the source material so much and Dune merch is rare … excellent review !
I had no idea you had a Lego channel lol. A welcome surprise
The minifigs alone now on Brinklink are $20 each.
YESSS BENJI I WANTED YOU TO RATE THIS SET!!!
I m A Lego Addict, I feel Like I've done So much
Thanks for the sets that you Review, now I get to see If I want to Build Some 👍
amazing production on your video
It would be interesting to see a photoshop video on your other channel of you designing a sci fi ship or some kind of sci fi technology/ civilization. Great video!
I LOVE THAT INTRO 😍😍😍(its a bit loud tho)
Ahaha 2 days ago i saw this set and i said: benny should make a video of this set! 2 days later:
The only Thing i dislike about this set are the red and blue pins they use.
Wow, the intro. Did Villeneuve direct it?
I agree, technique pieces kind of damages the overall look of the piece
Nice format for content creation ❤
Glad I found your channel. Subbed! Great review!
Quality over quantity ❤
Got a trailer for Dune part 2 at the beginning of the video. Cannot wait
How did you put it together in 2 hours?? It took me around 6
I build pretty fast I guess..
Thats some quality video! Do i hear a little fellow Dutch accent? Btw the price dropped pretty fast here in the Netherlands.
