I love the way you snatched that paper up in the beginning lol. Your happy and chillaxed demeanor is one of the many reasons youve become my favorite cake decorator. Those snowflakes look amazing btw. It took me forever to master the art of plunger cutters and silicone molds. Ew, especially for lace decorations. I still hate lace with a passion
Great tip! I don't know why I didn't think about that before! Writing on cakes are so very stressful and half the time it doesn't come out like I had planned. Definitely going to do this from now on! Thank you!
I really enjoy watching your videos!! Thank you for all the tips! I laugh because I hold my breath as I’m writing too…..😂 it’s probably not healthy, but it really is stressful. I can totally relate. Keep doing what you’re doing it helps!
Were you thinking stability maybe. Writing is harder than making a sugar flower for me. Thanks for the tip. Going to watch the one you linked for piping gel now.😁
Hi, I just subscribed. Your way and explanation on how to write on cakes is great!! I'm a hobby baker and have not been able to write on cakes I give. Thank you!!!
Hi Karolyn, I would like to know, is there a special kind of paper you used to print your happy birthday message for your cakes? Thank you very much, Nicol B.
Did you take it from the freezer and put it in the fridge first? Then after the fridge, you have to bring it into a cool room. That way the condensation won’t form that bad.
the first time i wrote on a cake, i was kind of suckered into doing it because the substitute baker at my job (deli/pastry) thought i knew how to due to me frosting cakes before. luckily, i'm an artist and know how to paint, so i kind of use those techniques with piping lol. the happy birthday lettering was fine, but it's was too small in the center, it's nothing a couple flowers can't fix. the people who ordered the cake thought it was cute, though, so at the end of the day, happy customers :)
It's all about hiding the "mistakes" and making it look the best we can! I do that all the time! You make it look like you did it on purpose 😂😂 I could never freehand writing on a cake, it makes me so nervous. I don't know how people do it!
@@KarolynsKakes it’s all about that confidence and control, like with painting! i find it most useful to use the same colour frosting as a guide, and if i mess up, i can scoop/smooth it from the cake. if i like it, i pipe over it with whatever colour. it’s honestly really fun to pipe cakes!! but man it can be time consuming
I’ve never tried this method. I can write pretty well with buttercream on a practice board or a cutting board but on the cake…. It looks totally different.
Maybe I’m overly paranoid because I work with copiers everyday, but I think you are poking the toner right into the cake. Might be a very small amount, but I’m not comfortable with it. I think it might be safer to do a reverse buttercream transfer, or, as you mentioned, a piping gel transfer.
Thanks for watching! Have you tried this technique before? Or do you prefer another technique for writing on cakes? Comment below and let me know!

Love this technique. So much better than trying to do this freehand, especially for a beginner.
It really is! My freehand SUCKS! 😂😂
Hi Karolyn - Great video! What icing did you use for the base? Was it buttercream icing with buttercream lettering?
It's American Buttercream, here's the recipe! ua-cam.com/video/IaQLNQTXo5E/v-deo.html
Great tip, I can see how I might mess it up! This is the most stressful part of decorating.
Glad it was helpful!

Are you asking what kind of paper I printed the words to trace onto the cake? If so, I just used a regular printer with regular computer paper.
@@KarolynsKakes Yes, I am, and thank you so very much. Have a blessed day.😊
Genuis IDEA!!
H Carolyn that cake is flawless.
I freeze a buttercream cake and when it was thawing the colors drain all over the cake, did I do something wrong?

You’re very welcome! 😊
What did you use for the black covering on the board?
It's a black cake drum, here's what I use:

Happy to help!
How about, how to write in whipcream?
Quite tough to write with whip cream better to get some cake toppers
I’ve never tried this method. I can write pretty well with buttercream on a practice board or a cutting board but on the cake…. It looks totally different.
I find that it’s because you’re arm is elevated! You gotta rest your elbow on something and support your wrist!
