To put that into perspective, Hawaii was still an independent nation in 1893. It was the year Huey Long was born. The world's first motion picture studio had just finished construction. The world's first college basketball game had occurred. Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire still had another 2 decades of life left. The Congo Free State was still around (the one run by Leopold II). The Orange Free State was still around. The Utah war was still a matter of debate. The very first Parliament of the World's Religions was hosted. Happy Birthday was published the same year as all of this, and it is STILL in copyright.

You know its really bad when you *buy* a godamn physical copy of a game (original), for the console you bought (ps4), you use the *native* recording function, have your time spent on studying the game, the region of it, making a sort of review of it, enhancing it on the native ps4 editor, and uploads it from the console through its native interface to youtube. And get copyright striked *not by the music* , nor by the game maker, but from *IGN* !!!
Literally i would be kinda okay with it if it was the music the game played tha looked like pretty much copyrighted material in the scene after the piece that was claimed, or even that ubisoft that made the actuall game, but no, *i was copyrighted because one scene of the game appeared in IGN's trailer for THAT GAME* , how tf is even IGN holder of the copyright of the game??
I bought that damn thing, used the cherrypicked sony recording function that only allows what sony wants to be recorded, and yet i was copyright claimed by a company that has nothing to do with neither the game or its actual copyright holder.
(The game was far cry 4, the scene was the beggining of the game where you are kidnapped into Pagan Min's hellicopter with a rag on your face).

The purpose of copyright given in the Constitution is “to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.” Originally, the idea of granting monopolies to artists and inventors was seen as something of a necessary evil to be tolerated for a short while in order to promote knowledge, science, art, and discoveries into the public domain quickly. In other words, the expansion of the public domain was the intent of copyright, with temporary artistic monopoly being a tool used to achieve it. Now, public domain has been all but legislated away and preserving/expanding the monopoly is the goal (life + 70 years).
It's literally the same 3 corporations licensing out all of humanity's works from the past 100 years to the other 2 corporations, and suing all of humanity daily for uttering anything more than the name of the work, in any context, with any amount of references to the work.

I hate to break it to you but legal constructions like copyright law are just another way that capitalism reinforces itself. The notion of 'private property' and copyright law are intrinsically linked. It was never about promoting knowledge, science and art, instead these regulations were designed to commodify more of human labour. A suggestion for part 4: In Germany it even went so far that for many years pretty much ALL music videos and videos containing copyrighted music were ENTIRELY BLOCKED because the local collecting society, the GEMA (who is also a big topic on its own because of their general infamous practices in Germany), just wanted to milk the shit out of UA-cam similar to Viacom back then. According to a study it went up to a whooping 61.5% of the 1000 most viewed videos (yeeees, 615 of 1000 videos) were ENTIRELY GEOBLOCKED in Germany due to Copyright bullshit. At least when you're writing fiction, there's a lot more freedom to come up with new, original ideas (as in there's generic fictional genres that you can use as starting templates to build your own worlds and shit). Like, I've been doing creative writing related stuff in my free time for about 10 or so years now, so creating worlds from scratch on pen and paper isn't super hard for me.
But yeah, UA-cam definitely gets the short end of the stick as far as copyright abuse goes along with just the music industry in general. Both of those are incredibly fucked, and you even have entire genres built around sampling stuff in both scenes (ie: YTP and vaporwave). Imagine if magazine companies copyrighted each issue of a magazine they made in order to hound people who make collages out of them (because, y'know, collages take magazines and transform them into art). That's basically what the movie and music industry does to both YTPs and vaporwave. Although, in the case of vaporwave, the scene is underground enough that they aren't really dealing with any legal battles yet. I do think that once that happens and they win out in court, we'll start to see some actual change in the battle against greedy copyright laws.

No, EmpLemon. There won't. Disney has already won. They held this ground long enough that zoomers are growing up with it. They never *did* pirate, at least not in any way they were aware of, because they've always had legal ways to consume at a reasonable price, and little access to places and tools with which to repurpose that media, since it was illegal to do so anyway. When the Boomers finally die, the country will belong to people who think this is normal and correct.
UA-cam itself is becoming exactly what it always wanted to be: the media conglomerate outlet, a replacement for cable TV. People who created things, who created UA-cam itself, will be choked off of the platform, and nothing will meaningfully replace it because of how big it is. Real art will probably be strictly local within a decade, because the plebeians can't be allowed broader reach than that. By then, nobody will even remember that UA-cam HAD real creators on it.

The way specific colors are patented and trademarked seem to be different between companies, and they only seem to really prevent competing companies or advertisers from encroaching on that "brand". I still think it's stupid though, because in my opinion the success of a brand should depend on the merit of the product or service it represents and not the shutdown of potential competitors. Though I'm not a corporate tycoon so what do I know about the morality of business right

I just love the chaotic energy flowing through everything you post on this website. I absolutely adore your editing-style and 'Lemon'-persona - it's so unique, raw and intimately real at times. Your political comments may not be the most theoretically funded, but I always come to respect them because they're well thought out and grounded in your experiences.

5:19 The patent system has been completely corrupted as a tool of corporate power as well, hiring a lawyer to file and defend a patent costs indvidual inventors infeasible amounts of money. Patents are also the reason why things such as insulin are so ridiculously expensive, companies can make slight modifications to retain their monopoly over the invention and prevent competition and innovation just like with copyright.
I was actually discussing patent laws and insulin with a friend before you wrote this comment.

The thing with insulin, some guy made it with hope and good will in mind, a corporate bought the rights to it and here we are now 100 years later
The problem isn’t the patients though, for insulin the issue is that every batch needs to be clinically tried because it’s biological production is less consistent then chemical production (like how aspirin is made).
