Farewell to a legendary Helicopter
Thursday, July 8, 2021, the Belgian Air Force took the last two helicopters of the type Alouette III out of service. This happened at their home base in Koksijde. This brings the curtain down on more than 50 years of operational deployment.
A third aircraft of the Alouette III fleet was already permanently on in August last year the ground. In the meantime, that device has found its place on the Campus Saffraanberg (Sint- Truiden) where it functions as didactic material for the training of future students defense technicians. The aircraft that are now leaving will become part of the museum collection of the War Heritage Institute Museum. One device will be exhibited in Beauvechain. The other goes to the museum depot in Landen .
The Alouette III helicopters boast an impressive track record. They regularly embarked on board the Navy command and logistics support ships for fulfilling supporting logistical and tactical missions. Later embarkation followed the multi-purpose frigates, such as during anti-piracy missions in the Horn of Africa. They, stationed aboard Dutch naval ships, also took successfully participated in several counter-drug operations in the Caribbean. in addition these helicopters also carried out rescue operations and medical evacuations and they took part in anti-pollution missions over the North Sea.
On June 25, the Navy took the BNS GODETIA in Zeebrugge, with which these helicopters often formed a tandem, out of service. Until then, one of the helicopters was embarked on the command ship's last operational mission.
