    Two things. 1. Your're one of very few reactors that took the time to try to understand Paulie rather then defaulting to "I really don't like this guy" and I really appreciate that. 2. Rocky 1 and 2 are really a package deal. Can't have one without the other. ;)

      @@JadeJoobMoviesgreat observation. Paulie is angry and depressed about his life. He's miserable and he blames Adrian for this. He even says to Adrian "I don't get married because of you!". The thing is that these characters are not old. Both Rocky and Adrian are under 30. Paulie is probably only in his early 30's. Today being 29-31 years old and single is normal. Back then it was not especially in a family oriented Italian culture.
      Another thing about this film is even though it's 47 years old it doesn't look dated. The grittiness of blue collar life in a big city doesn't change. You can go to any major city today and visit the poor areas and they look exactly like Philadelphia did in this movie.

      I like her reaction to Paulie. I'm happy that she was able to find the subtle nuances in his storyline. That just makes her reaction to Mickey all the more shocking.
      Mickey was open with his exact motivations, his exact reasoning for being angry at Rocky, and he even offered Rocky training for free.
      I was shocked that she would assume that Mickey doesn't have Rocky's best interest at heart. Considering how she was able to see the nuances in Paulie's character.

      @@JadeJoobMoviesfinally you’re doing the Rocky series! Talk about an American classic. The ultimate underdog story. Oddly enough, this movie built Sylvester Stallone’s career. He was inspired by the idea after going to see Muhammad Ali go 15 rounds with Chuck Wepner, an unknown underdog that no one gave a chance. He wrote the script when he had no money and agreed to sell it on the condition that he got to play Rocky and star in it. The studios tried to get around that but he wouldn’t budge. Talk about betting on yourself and believing in yourself.

    Burt Young deserves many accolades for his overlooked performance of Paulie. Burt helps make for an even better film. Yes, Paulie's not likeable. But Burt's work as Paulie makes us so readily root against him with enthusiasm, and more importantly, allows his fellow actors to play off Paulie to really shine themselves. Like his scene with Talia Shire, when Talia's Adrian finally stands up for herself in an explosion of righteousness, a wonderful performance. In that scene, there's a powerful line from Paulie that a lot may miss in the yelling; "you're supposed to be good to me". Paulie is wrong. But it's Burt's pained TONE when he says it that shows so much sadness, desperation, & a vulnerability in Paulie. Wow. Great artistry by Burt Young!

    • @davepangburn
      @davepangburn Рік тому +8

      And by the way, speaking of great supporting performances, I can't ever speak highly enough of the underrated work in Rocky I and Rocky II of Tony Burton as Apollo Creed's Manager. Yet another artist who chews up some epic scenes with skills of nuance and delivery of short but potent dialogue.

    When Rocky says to Adrienne "No fooling around during training," and she retreats to the kitchen. I always loved how Rocky WEARS A BLANKET when he walks over to her. THAT is how it is when you're poor: you dont have many sweaters and warm clothes, you just wrap yourself in a blanket all day long: on the couch, in a chair, walking to the kitchen. To some poor, "warm clothes are for rich people."
    It's a nice touch, you dont often see in movies.

    The story behind how this film came about is as amazing as the film.
    Stallone was nearly completely broke when he wrote the script. He was struggling to get parts, and wrote it with himself in mind for the lead. He had to give up his dog (Butkis in the film is his dog), because he couldn't afford to feed him. He shopped around the script and was even offered 300,000 to just sell the script, but he wouldn't get to be in it. He said no. Finally he finds someone who wanted the script and was willing to let him play the lead. The final budget was 2 million. It wins best screenplay at the Oscars and set Stallone as an icon in the movies. Oh and he bought his dog back.
    Stallone tells the story of it on his instagram.
    Oh the actor who plays Micky is in the Film "Grumpy Old Men" and "Grumpier Old Men", two fun comedies.
    While some of the films are better than others, the full Rocky series is worth it, as will as the new Creed films which are tied to Rocky. Every film has a good human story to them.

    The nuanced humanity in this is what sets it apart from all the other sports movies this film inspired, including most of its sequels. An all time classic for sure. The guy that inspired the story for this film, Chuck Wepner, grew up around the same area as me. And I actually got a chance to meet him once when I was waiting tables back in college. Had him as a customer. He seemed like a nice guy. Anyways, really enjoyed your reaction and glad you liked the film :)
    Oh, by the way, while I'm sure everyone in the comments is recommending the sequels, I'd also like to recommend checking out the Karate Kid on here if you haven't already. The director for this film, John G Avildsen, also directed that film. And it achieves a similar strong blend of character based story telling within the framework of a sports film.

    Philadelphia has very much adopted both the character of Rocky Balboa and the movie itself. It’s shown pretty much every year around the Fourth of July, outdoors on the grounds near the Philadelphia Museum of Art - the building that those famous steps lead to. And the city is very much a part of this film, like the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which is the boulevard in the shot you liked at 26:15, which runs from the Art Museum in a straight line to City Hall, which at the time this movie was made was the tallest building in the city. Of course, the sequence of places in the city during Rocky’s runs makes no sense - he’d be running close to a marathon - but it’s all real Philadelphia.

    Many state it in different ways, but Boxing is Not #1 in the Rocky movies. Rocky is a love story & a life story (life is tough & to keep getting up when knocked down). Lessons to believe in yourself. Rocky 1 saw Adrian going from shy & low self-esteem to developing into a confident young woman. Her arc throughout the movies is great. Rocky & Adrians love is great throughout the franchise. Rocky was HUGE when I was a kid. SO much fun to see young people watch Rocky & not pass it by just cuz it's getting dated. Keep going! :)

  • @adamwhite767
    @adamwhite767 Рік тому

    I have always loved this movie for many reasons, here are just a few. It's not a boxing movie, it's a love story with boxing mixed in. My favorite line in this movie is when Adrienne comes into the ring at the end and Rocky sees her and he says "where's your hat?" all he cares about in that moment is her. And, to me one of the most powerful moments in all of cinema is when Rocky goes down in the 14th round and is struggling to get back up while Creed is celebrating and then he does get back up, and Creed turns around to see him waving him in with is hands, the look on Creed's face is a combination disbelief and defeat, he knows he can't beat him. That was shot really well by the director and hats off to Carl Weathers for being able to convey that so subtly.

Poor and starving, Stallone sold Butkus for $40 while writing "Rocky", then 6 months later after selling the screenplay for "Rocky", he had to beg the new owners to let him use Butkus in the movie, and they agreed, and Stallone paid them $15,000 to get Butkus back.
