Marilyn would have made the character obvious, because of Audrey we don't feel that this story is about an adult theme. Even a child could watch it, she gave the character a sense of innocence. If you read the book, Truman clearly got inspiration from Marilyn (who was his real life friend). Marilyn only seemed “too obvious” because she was typecast all the time....which you also made the mistake of doing to her. Anyone who’s done an ounce of research into Marilyn knows how much that hurt her and how complex she was. Holly was never meant to be innocent. She openly curses in the book. Holly from the movie doesn’t seem to come from a poor country background at all.
The opening ...when she's standing at Tiffany's Window in that Black Evening Gown, you can see just how Delicate she was...Just Perfect Delicate Beauty.

Audrey was a treat, but Breakfast at Tiffany's, specifically Holly Golightly, really wasn't the film for her. Most she's done is revolutionize fashion trends, especially for slimmer and leaner women. I understand the image is what contributed to the complexity of the character, but it would have been more interesting if Audrey would be at least more shocking here. She was still looked at as someone elegant, and (god forbid) emulated...which wasn't exactly the point of her character. There's a reason why Marilyn Monroe would have been the perfect casting. It's perfect for Audrey because the story in the movie is completely different from the book.

I never met her, but I'm sure she was intelligent and understood the character. I don't like watching people in movies having sex. I'm 45, call me old fashioned, but to me it's like peeping into a window and watching two people. Sex is normal, but it should be kept private between two people in my opinion. In older movies you knew they were having it, the audience was sophisticated enough to know. I guess that's not the case today.

Women 65 and Over, I think that is unfair. Marilyn did have a natural sex appeal but she was more than that. She could tap into a well of sensitivity and vulnerability. I love Audrey and what she brought to the role and every role she did but Capote wrote the book and he didn't feel Audrey was right for the part. He wanted Marilyn and knew her. They were friends.

Audrey playing it, though, could get away with more due to being coded as a "nice girl" and proprietous. Audrey was the only one who could play this type of character without being killed, punished, or humiliated in the end. Her performance here is important for this reason in that it progressed the image of women in film. "Look! It's okay to be a single woman with an active sex life and agency because Audrey, a 'nice girl,' is doing it!"
They didn't need to in those days. People used their imaginations. Now they have to show everything. I'm tired and bored of watching sex scenes in movies. They use to be able to imply it and not have to show everything that is so obvious. This generation behaves like they invented sex.

Though I adore Audrey in what has become her signature role, I'm not sure I completely agree with the assessment of Marilyn as too "obvious" for the role of Holly. Look at any of her films--Monroe was sexy for sure, but she also radiated innocence and vulnerability, someone who'd been deeply hurt and needed protecting. I'm sure that's why Capote preferred her.

To be the top one there has to be more to her than just being sexy and beautiful. When I traveled to Hollywood 19 years ago as a tourist, I was convinced that the shops there would have souvenirs of Julia Roberts, Scarlet Johansen and and Angelina Jolie but, to my surprise Marilyn was the absolute mega star in Hollywood, I guess she still is... you don't conquer that just being sexy, that something more that she had that nobody can explain is what made her a star, maybe not the best actress, but, undeniably, the biggest star in history... and that was not just by being sexy.
The casting of George Peppard was perfect ... dropdead handsome and perfect chemistry with and foil for Audrey Hepburn. Mickey Rooney's somewhat camp caricature of the Japanese neighbor was an amusing farcical comic interlude. The film is perfect.

I really don't think Yunioshi even adds anything to the story. It would be a better movie if his scenes were left out. It's a classic example of how tastes change- in 1961 most people didn't care but not those scenes are unwatchable.
That scene where the woman gives his check to George Peppard and says "I am a very stylish girl" , that piece of sentence was used in a very nice song from the 90s.

My point was that Hepburn was obviously given the role to ensure that audiences would embrace and root for Holly, not condemn her. Audrey Hepburn was so enchanting a screen presence that it was easy, especially in 1961, to forget just how Holly made her living.
Truman Capote should consider himself very lucky that they used Audrey instead. Since M.M. would have cheapened the role. And not given that classic air that Holly displayed.!!
Not at all. “Pretty Woman” is about a hooker who emotionally rescues a rich man as much as he rescues her. The George Peppard character didn’t need rescuing like the Richard Gere character did. Moreover, the Julia Roberts character didn’t struggle with the psychological defenses that the Audrey Hepburn character did. The latter was avoidant of an intimate relationship whereas the former wanted one. Last, the Julia Roberts character had to be transformed from a trashily-dressed hooker into one of style, whereas the Audrey Hepburn character was already elegant and chic from the very first scene.
that director is Blake Edwards (Julie Andrews' husband). He's not bitter he's telling the truth. He's ashamed he mocked Oriental people by casting Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi (and rightly so..) Otherwise he's famous for the Pink Panther series as well as Victor Victoria. He's a master.

The beautiful score by Henry Mancini music swells as, what appears to be, an elegant (and perhaps wealthy) socialite emerges from the vehicle and begins eating a truck driver's breakfast. Somethings night right here. Who is she? She looks a little goofy. Why is she wearing sunglasses? She window shops at Tiffany with no intention of buying anything. "Hey, baby, what's going on here?"

The audience didn't need a lecture about trying to capture "wild things". I don't believe that opposites attract when it comes to serious relationships. And then there was all that nonsense about the cat. The scene in the taxi with the cat in the rain was about as subtle as being lectured to by a rapper with a megaphone. I confess that I did not read the Truman Capote novella but it is the Blake Edwards movie that we are talking about. Blake Edwards has done much better work.
Escorts, if your lucky enough to find a good one are far better than having a girl friend. Much cheaper too. Emotionally, financially and in other obvious ways that don't need to be mentioned here. Find a good one you can see on a regular basis. Respect them and they will follow in return.

Blake Edwards had to put the points on the i's to Audrey Hepburn. But Marilyn Monroe would definitely have driven him crazy. And at that time he didn't have Julie Andrews to calm him down, so he would have maddened.
I remember watching this commentary on the directors cut dvd thinking the same thing when Blake Edwards says this! I think George was perfect! He has that “could care less… just here bc im here” air about him but at the same time gives off that subtle good guy innocence and curiousity that says “actually I do care quite a bit and iʻll stay till the end in case you need me” which is exactly what I got from his portrayal and exactly how I think the character was meant to be. So, in my book George was the perfect fit.
I'd be interested to see a different interpretation - one that stays more true to Capote's novella. Not saying there's anything wrong with this film, it's possibly my favourite film ever.... I'm interested to see what it'd be like to adapt the Novella straight.
A great documentary on the movie...I too would have liked to have seen a true Japanese actor instead of Micky Rooney...but he took the part and went with it....
The film was ruined, for me anyway, by Mickey Rooney's dreadful Japanese character. I have to fast forward as soon as he appears. Apart from that, it's terrific. George Peppard is one of my favourite actors, and Ms. Hepburn is sublime.

But if you look at the original story by Capote, she would have been much better suited for the role compared to Audrey. Capote himself thought of Audrey as a huge miscast. Also, the insertion of this character serves no purpose, but a base and low appeal to comedy; in fact, even the director (if you actually paid attention to the video, you would've heard saying) regrets putting this character in the movie. This character actually detracts from the movie.

To be the top one there has to be more to her than just being sexy and beautiful. When I traveled to Hollywood 19 years ago as a tourist, I was convinced that the shops there would have souvenirs of Julia Roberts, Scarlet Johansen and and Angelina Jolie but, to my surprise Marilyn was the absolute mega star in Hollywood, I guess she still is... you don't conquer that just being sexy, that something more that she had that nobody can explain is what made her a star, maybe not the best actress, but, undeniably, the biggest star in history... and that was not just by being sexy.
The casting of George Peppard was perfect ... dropdead handsome and perfect chemistry with and foil for Audrey Hepburn. Mickey Rooney's somewhat camp caricature of the Japanese neighbor was an amusing farcical comic interlude. The film is perfect.

@@lisainger6751 He was perfectly naturalistic in his acting in this film, and in his genteelly handsome looks plausible as a financially struggling young author behooved to rent his romantic services to a rich lady client to pay his rent; and as a romantic lead for Audrey's Holly, compelling enough to turn them both to monogamy.

For the love of Pete she knew additionally that Truman Capote wanted Monroe for the part. Audrey was human and realistic and wordly. She was an advocate for human rights recall and I'm sure she did not judge anyone or anything unless it was unkind.

Audrey Hepburn did to what the world considered sexy in film what Kate Moss did in fashion. Both came along when what was considered beautiful (from Marilyn Monroe for Audrey to the Supermodels for Kate) and both were attacked for being too skinny and being the wrong image for young people. Yet both these little girls changed the world's view.

I really don't think Yunioshi even adds anything to the story. It would be a better movie if his scenes were left out. It's a classic example of how tastes change- in 1961 most people didn't care but not those scenes are unwatchable.
He was "comic relief" added to an otherwise deep, profoundly disturbing and sad character.

@xXPinkGoddessXx But it's not just or only about what was implied but not shown. Attitudes toward sexuality (and women) were much narrower during that era, regardless of how much the audience saw. My point was that Hepburn was obviously given the role to ensure that audiences would embrace and root for Holly, not condemn her. Audrey Hepburn was so enchanting a screen presence that it was easy, especially in 1961, to forget just how Holly made her living.

I didn’t think of Pretty Woman at all.
Not at all. “Pretty Woman” is about a hooker who emotionally rescues a rich man as much as he rescues her. The George Peppard character didn’t need rescuing like the Richard Gere character did.
Moreover, the Julia Roberts character didn’t struggle with the psychological defenses that the Audrey Hepburn character did. The latter was avoidant of an intimate relationship whereas the former wanted one.
Last, the Julia Roberts character had to be transformed from a trashily-dressed hooker into one of style, whereas the Audrey Hepburn character was already elegant and chic from the very first scene.

so why did holly drove out the cat because she thinks she was like the cat..nameless and wild and chicken..and she hates it...but when she finds the cat it means she had finally accepted who she was even though shes a soaking nameless cat and realized...hey,its not a bad thing to be.

It's dawn. The camera angle on the deserted 5th avenue directs all your attention towards the lone, approaching taxi. The beautiful score by Henry Mancini music swells as, what appears to be, an elegant (and perhaps wealthy) socialite emerges from the vehicle and begins eating a truck driver's breakfast. Somethings night right here. Who is she? She looks a little goofy. Why is she wearing sunglasses? She window shops at Tiffany with no intention of buying anything. "Hey, baby, what's going on here?"

The plot was thin and scattered. The Buddy Ebsen character, Doc Golightly, came and went like the plot convenience that it was. The audience didn't need a lecture about trying to capture "wild things". I also didn't buy the premise that a young, level-headed writer could fall so desperately in love with a callous, disorganized, self-centered woman who constantly lives above her means. I don't believe that opposites attract when it comes to serious relationships. And then there was all that nonsense about the cat. The scene in the taxi with the cat in the rain was about as subtle as being lectured to by a rapper with a megaphone. I confess that I did not read the Truman Capote novella but it is the Blake Edwards movie that we are talking about. Blake Edwards has done much better work.

Escorts, if your lucky enough to find a good one are far better than having a girl friend. Much cheaper too. Emotionally, financially and in other obvious ways that don't need to be mentioned here. Find a good one you can see on a regular basis. Respect them and they will follow in return.
(continued) Also I suspect the character and story made Paramount nervous (this was 1961, after all) and so--in addition to her beauty and many gifts--Audrey was preferred because (as they're all saying in the doc) her unique persona would distract the audience from who Holly really was--I agree with the observation that 1961 audiences probably left the theatre not realizing Audrey had played a hooker. No doubt the fear was that Marilyn's sexiness might have given the game away.

I'm glad they made the comments about the miscasting of Mickey Rooney, and the broad strokes given to the character he played. It is regrettable, the only cringeworthy part of an otherwise good movie. But those were the times.

How could that man not have cast George Peppard? It could ONLY be played by him. No other way. It was meant to be.
I remember watching this commentary on the directors cut dvd thinking the same thing when Blake Edwards says this! I think George was perfect! He has that “could care less… just here bc im here” air about him but at the same time gives off that subtle good guy innocence and curiousity that says “actually I do care quite a bit and iʻll stay till the end in case you need me” which is exactly what I got from his portrayal and exactly how I think the character was meant to be. So, in my book George was the perfect fit.

I'd be interested to see a different interpretation - one that stays more true to Capote's novella. Not saying there's anything wrong with this film, it's possibly my favourite film ever.... I'm interested to see what it'd be like to adapt the Novella straight.

It was "comic relief", much needed like the party scene. This was a very deep movie and tht balanced it beautuful. Blake Edwards at his finest.
A great documentary on the movie...I too would have liked to have seen a true Japanese actor instead of Micky Rooney...but he took the part and went with it....
The film was ruined, for me anyway, by Mickey Rooney's dreadful Japanese character. I have to fast forward as soon as he appears. Apart from that, it's terrific. George Peppard is one of my favourite actors, and Ms. Hepburn is sublime.

@NaturalBornHedonist She would have been a miscast, if she had to play the role like Audrey did. But if you look at the original story by Capote, she would have been much better suited for the role compared to Audrey. Capote himself thought of Audrey as a huge miscast.

@JudgeJulieLit did you get that definition from the Internet? What you are describing is a parody, not camp as you said. Besides a comic strip is not by definition camp, it can be, but not usually. Also, the insertion of this character serves no purpose, but a base and low appeal to comedy; in fact, even the director (if you actually paid attention to the video, you would've heard saying) regrets putting this character in the movie. This character actually detracts from the movie.
