  • I am currently converting a Lowe 1436 jon boat to a bass boat and the first step is to strip and paint this jon boat. This video is part 2 of a 2 part series from prep to painting a jon boat. I've never painted an entire jon boat before and I wanted to experience what it's like get my hands dirty and get it done. At the end of this video I will share with you my recommendations based on things that I learned threw this process. Watch as I take you step-by-step through the jon boat painting process.

Alot of people might not think they can paint Thier boat with a roller but I use to paint large 50 ft and larger high end boats and we used a method called rolling and tipping....The process was to roll on a paint similar to automotive paint using a slow reducer in the paint....then the tipping part is actually taking a foam brush and very lightly taking the tip of the brush and very lightly dragging across the paint only toughing the bubbles or what I call orange pill....the paint will lay down and as it dries it becomes flat and it's hard to tell it wasn't sprayed....This method is used to prevent wasted paint from over spray.....I learned this from a company I worked for that restored large boats.....thought I'd pass on the info to fellow boaters....The paint used was a special marine paint made for this process...Again it's called rolling and tipping.....Thanks for your video looks good!!!

Just spent a couple hours watching aluminium boat painting videos and this is by far the simplest, easiest to follow series of videos I've found. The final product turned out fantastic as well. I have a 14 foot aluminium from the 70s that is going to require some serious prep, looks like I need some basic tools and a lot of time and attention to detail. Thanks for posting this. I cant believe theres so few views on this video, keep it up!

The best paint video I have viewed. You didn't talk 90 miles an hour with loud, obnoxious music playing while you were explaining, unlike so many others. I learned a lot from this video and really enjoyed it. Thank you!

Great work, nice finish. You can never under-estimate how important the prep work is, thats where all the time goes...
Just gotta remember the prep work is never going to take longer than the time you will be using / looking at the boat, and you dont want to spend the next few years wishing that you had put just that little bit extra into the prep, the blemish you can avoid by 10 mins extra work is the one that will catch your eye for years....
The time you spent in prepping this boat means you should have years of pleasant fullfilment, and compliments, well deserved.

Very good job! Thank you for making this video. I am stripping a Jon boat now myself. I used several cans of cheap dollar tree oven cleaner and it did remove some paint. I also used a good brand of paint remover. For the cost what worked best for me was cheap brake fluid . I brushed the fluid on and left it overnight. It seems to only take one layer but it works

great job man. i bought easyoff as some online say it removes paint. didnt do anything for my paint. maybe if the paint surface was rough or worn. ill buy that cleanstrip you used. at least the previous owners only painted the walls, inside and out. im going to leave the rails bare and polish them. they always get chipped and banged up on stuff anyway. i almost bought plywood for my benches, although i didnt want any plywood. then i found old highway signs at the scrap yard. theyre 1/8" and very stiff. glad i found that aluminum! excited to get my project underway!
