This is my entire life, from playground to boardrooms. I’m an entrepreneur now, because I just couldn’t do it anymore. It is not okay to be attractive, charismatic and smart in the American workforce.
I did my Master's Thesis on "Bullying Among Nurses". It was/is widespread and so damaging to the spirt and health, as well as the patients. As I was doing it, I got bullied by the Nursing Department where I worked, and the American Association of Nurses, who wanted to buy my booklet and have me give up my copyright on it. I never sold it, and just share with whoever is bullied and wants the info. We need to take care of each other, not step on each other.
Love how your body language changed through this talk! Began almost sheepishly but as you transitioned into your story your passion began to flow and as you made the point in conclusion it was hammered home. Problems = opportunity in disguise revealed. Thankful you confronted your villain and the world gained a great needed influencer.
I faced a very similar thing at work and it took me 2 burnouts and a lot of ill health to wrest back control for myself. Great talk and delivery, and well done. TEDx is a tough talk! Very pleased you've moved on to better things.
whoa! that was freaky, for a moment there I thought Heather was speaking directly to me!! Great talk! I look back and all the "enemies" that were supposed to be my colleagues were WOMEN. I needed to listen to this. Why isn't the media focusing on that?!?!?!
Great job Heather! I was wondering when I would get to hear it! Awesome! Awesome! Very brave. I was a single mom navigating my way for 15 years! I remember working with fear everyday praying that I was doing enough to be seen or justify my existence with my employer! One of my best victories came when I was able to leave a company for a better job because my villain was my boss!! Crazy part she applied for a job at the next company i went to and my manager asked me for a recommendation for her! You did a great job!
When I worked in the Silicon Valley I was told to be careful how I treated fellow workers because you never know if you will go to another company and they might eventually be your supervisor (or in your case, a recommendation - I am sure you gave an honest one)
this is a great talk. Work sabotage from competitive coworkers has always been an issue but I was unaware of how strong it was female to female. Thanks for the wake up call
That was a great talk. I have had a few villains in my life. I was able to fire the first one, but as I got older and grew my family, I had that same fear. If I push back, how am I going to make it. I let her steal my confidence and ruin my relationships at work. But never again! The next time I encountered a villain, I stood up for myself and wouldn't allow myself to be treated as if I wasn't good enough. I wound up leaving that job as well and now I am in a great place where I am valued and I can let my confidence grow. Hearing your story really empowers all of us to take control of our lives.
Wonderful message that we can all learn from. The story we tell ourselves everyday impacts everything. (Oddly this was the topic of my TEDx) Also as a father of 2 daughters I saw the warfare that went on between them. Boys are easy as we focus on the battle at hand where I saw my daughters play for the war carrying baggage around from past battles. Great job standing up.
One of my 12 Step mentor/sponsor told me that when I am having trouble with someone at work, let them know that "I will be here when you are gone." So far it has worked several times as I have been in the same company for about 16 years. So either way can work. It used to be me "hitting the highway" and I liked it that way since I had enough confidence that God would provide me another job and it was like I was on that "new adventure" ;)
I choose me!!!! Great message and we all have those villains. Some physical, others are our own mental conversations, but either way it's important to fire them indeed and choose ourselves! Great talk ~
A blessing in disquse indeed! So Powerful @heathermonahan! Time to Serve Me so I can be of Service to so many others! On to a more meaningful Service! New Mission Mindset! 👊🏻💪🏼✈🌀😎 -Hurricane Ed...SoFlo bound!
Teaching others how to treat us!!!ive waiting for this tedx talk. You are one of the smartest women I listen to & i listen to all your podcasts. Great talk Heather I even learned something about advertising! Your greater bc of your struggle. Great storytelling🙌
God bless you for giving this speech on a much needed topic. Women bullying women is extremely pervasive and deserves as much attention as the "me too" movement. I've had several female villians and recently some of the worst, ever. It's a nightmare and also egregious what these women do. Thank you for spreading the word!! I hope you'll post this Ted Talk to LinkedIn.
Followed the link over from Linkedin, as yes, you nailed it. Bravo. It seems so few of us (people in general, not just women) get the opportunity to have the last laugh over a corporate bully / villain in our life. The Lord knows how much I have wanted it from my own but I keep trying to work on forgiveness. Having dealt with my own Faustian bargain, congrats on taking door #3.
Our Miami Women Who Rock Founders Circle members had the distinct honor of hearing Heather Monahan at an iHeartMedia "Brunch & Learn" and she was amazing! Love this Tedx talk, congratulations Heather Monahan on a powerful and dynamic presentation.
Women in authority can and do harass men. I know this may shock (and delight) many people, but many male employees are treated badly by women in authority. The problem is speaking up about it. You are either 1. Not believed 2. told to stop being a a "wuss" or 3. Simply fired for being "a troublemaker" Think about the the next time you want to be the boss lady and tell off the guy who is "a problem". I lost a promising position in sales for being a guy. I was confident, hit my numbers, added to the forward momentum of the company, but the office manager just did not like me. I get it, some people just do not click. I have to deal with it all the time. This office manager used her position to confront me on every decision I made, question every single sale I cut, and finally to outright lie about an issue to force the owner to fire me. She came back to my desk as I was cleaning it out and said "Well, glad you are gone. Now we can get a woman in here that deserves the position" So again, keep in mind that when you are trying to be the hard nosed business person and browbeat a (supposed) problem employee, what are your reasons? Real business, or some sort of "I'll show him who is in charge!"
Just pulled out my notes on this and posted on my FB page that I’d be modeling my own 2020 campaign after your steps, minutes before seeing your post on Li!!!

This is a powerful message, and yes not talked about a lot. Saw you on the Gary Vee podcast on UA-cam and loved your story. Thank you Heather for sharing this! And yes, we all have a villain but fear often gets in the way. But losing ourselves is even scarier if we realize that is an option, should we not confront our villains. Much love to you and way to go! 💗💗💗

I really wish she could overpower her and keep her job and life's work. My villains made it so toxic for me to keep working even if I called them out and pushed their harrasment back. They just never get tired of interfering with your work, then they have the energy to do their work and then dominant others as well. How do we tackle such a person? How do we Stop them from sabotaging our image even before we get our hands on work. Its so so toxic and I am a person who wears their heart on the sleeve. I would fight like I would fight a dog but then these people are not dogs they are insidious, and they find different ways to strategically discredit you again and again and make everyone else believe the same. Its not the same as tackling a dog, you can see a dog coming at you. You can't see a villain.

Heather Monahan: I am an atheist, but absolutely love the teachings of Jesus Christ. “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” seems to be the critical message. “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me,” also appears appropriate.
