Thank you for this really well thought out and respectful method of dealing with the emotions and the rushing through the task that are the real heart of the problem for folks who have chronic issues with parting with stuff that no longer serves their life. I have found only people who show how to 'clean', and simply tell you to declutter, with no mention how!!

I am in the process of decluttering so that I can downsize. A few weeks ago I was getting very anxious and stressed at the thought of decluttering my home but now that I have rehomed a few items I am feeling a lot better. I sat this morning looking out of the window, as the leaves were falling off the trees and I thought, the trees don't hold onto their leaves for years and years, they let them go because they don't need them in winter and God provides new ones in the spring.

Clutter is decisions not made. The decisions are hard but so necessary and it feels so good when you have made them. I'm making these decisions so my children don't hate me when I'm gone. Also, my son's system will be to just get a skip and I hate the thought of useful stuff going to landfill! I'm half way through and this video is really helpful

This presentation is great for older people especially. I’m in my late 60’s. We simply don’t have the energy to do a rapid declutter or a ‘full day’ or week long one. We watch some of the other videos on the net and feel guilty because we can’t do it at that pace. A few hours a week is all that many of us with heart problems, arthritis, osteoarthritis and other conditions can manage. Thankyou!

I get what you mean. There are only so many hours in the day. You have a routine for watching videos. Build a routine for decluttering. 1/2 hour less of video, 1/2hr, decluttering. 1... 2 hours a week. Do both, videos and decluttering. Repetition and frequency builds momentum. Good luck!

so true! I strive to stay on a "shopping diet" or it if feel I need to go I am sure to work at getting rid of a whole bag of other stuff at home and then immediately trying to sell whatever I bought (unless it is something I am using right away like gloves or clothing for myself or whatever). Shopping is an addiction! Especially for people like me that sell items for a living because it is a chance at making $$$ --this makes it more difficult--so I force myself to only buy expensive "sure things" that I will make over $100 on and then run to give away unsaleable cheap items. It is all a struggle but I am happy to be alive and try and tell myself every day "It's better to be a Hoarder than a Whore".... this makes me laugh and I can move forward and just enjoy my process.... it is all about us in the end and how we feel about ourselves. Good luck to everyone!

I am so sorry that you lost your daughter, I can’t imagine what that must be like. She would wish that you would contact local bodies to ask for the support that you may need. Do ask. If people don’t know, they can’t help you.

:) May I humbly suggest that masters degree isn't worth as much, since plagiarism and buying degrees is on the rise worldwide? I have met illiterate construction workers who helped me more than dozens of masters degree whatevers. In fact a man who swims in ice water in his shorts for fun taught me much more about decluttering. Massively letting go of stuff to deep breathe, stretch, be outdoors and get ready to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The stuff I need to go backpacking is mostly all I need and I am almost 50.

I used those plastic tubs to organize seasonal clothes, sewing fabric, decorations and stacked them neatly in the back of the closet. I realized how frustrating it was to dig through, how overwhelmed I felt by this extra stuff so I started donating stuff to thrift shops and clothing exchange and local charity auctions in the plastic tubs. Feel so much better without the tubs on the floor of the closets. Free up floor space. I only keep what will fit in drawers and those drawers are lightly filled. As things break, like electronics and appliances, I have decided not to replace them. A knife and a cutting board are my food processor and fancy choppers, a good stainless French press has saved me hundreds when compared to the numerous coffee makers that have broken. I ha e donated all but a few books. Now I go to the library regularly. I think about waste, carbon footprint, living small, lowering my impact on the earth. It is fun once I got through the emotionally tough stuff that I had been hanging on to.

It takes a whole lot to sort through and decide what to do with a lifetime of possessions that we've bought, made, been given, or inherited. My takeaway from this video is to let go of the anger and resentment that I've attached to this process. That's very timely and helpful. Thanks so much.

“Organizing is not the solution to clutter.” That hit home with me because my brain is geared to organizing, then to declutter. Example: I gather up all my nail polish, then I decide what I want to keep. I gather up all my shampoos and decide what’s working for me and what’s not. Organizing first actually helps me in my process.

What a great presentation! Dad passed 5 years ago; mom has dementia and 3 years ago moved in with me. I'm an only child, early 60's. I've been cleaning out their house for the past 3 years - sometimes full force, other times haltingly as time and energy permit (I have a slight neurological disorder which sometimes hinders me). I just want to THANK YOU SO MUCH for touching on the resentment aspect - it is sooo true! I love my parents dearly, and really don't mind helping them in this way, but sometimes the resentment I often feel toward mom (whose house was thankfully, always in apple pie order and no clutter), is palpable. And yes, she had no clutter, BUT, one persons (mom's) cherished possessions are another person's (my) purging nightmare. She'd often say she didn't want to leave me with cleaning out the house after they were gone, and although I urged her to just start purging some of her clothing (because I knew then, and yes, am experiencing now as I knew I would...the pain of having to 'ditch' something as personal as her clothing), well, I'm stuck with purging her clothing, and dealing with all the those emotions. The resentment - thank you for touching on that, it is so very true about children resenting this monumental task being dumped on them. It can be overwhelming, and the task feel like a bottomless pit that will never end. What I really want to thank you for is for SAYING IT WITH A STRAIGHT FACE. Seriously. The audience chuckled and I expected you to break out in to a grin of agreement. YOU DID NOT. Thank you for that. You didn't treat it as a laugh line - you stayed deadly serious even during the chuckles, and I can't tell you how wonderful and validated you made me feel by keeping a straight face at that moment. You know. You really know. THANK YOU.

Having a flood in my house enabled me to learn how to throw things away. Forced to let them go because they were now molding. I'm allergic to mold! I began to feel freed up from all the emotional chains that were attached to those items. They represented a memory I enjoyed visiting. I was 56 then . It made me get comfortable & even excited to go through my things, periodically & thin them dowñ each time. I have let go of most of my antique furniture that enslaved me to take care of it for kids, who don't want it anyway. I now love having furniture that can be used for grandkids, knowing it can easily be replaced. I'm free to enjoy life in my home now .🙂

After ten minutes I wrote a list of emotional reasons that I want to declutter, then practical ones. I could instantly see how the emotional ones would satisfy me temporarily and the clutter would come right back. The practical ones felt like they were very concrete and the benefits would keep me from allowing re-clutter to happen. You have a very workable approach. Thank you.

I've been very happy donating items to the Mormons. They have thrift stores and can use a wide variety of donated items.
I am not a Mormon myself but I have received help, and have known others in my senior community who have received help from the Mormons.
Some of my items are quite nice and in mint condition. These things could be consigned or sold online, but all of that takes time and energy that can really slow the decluttering process down to the point where I lose motivation because I'm not seeing the progress I want.
Donating my "stuff" to the Mormons has been a Godsend for me. They are very well organized and will figure out the best way to use the items I donate. When I "take the easy way out" and donate my sellable items to the Mormons I don't feel like I have lost out on something; I feel like I've contributed to the well being of the community.

I am in the process of cleaning out my storage unit and as I listened , I was visualizing different aspects of that process that have been stumbling blocks for me and this talk was easing the stress and creating solutions... ( Ahh I need a flat space, table etc to set up in the storage unit in which to sort and categorize). Sounds simple but when you’re trying to manage overwhelm you can’t see what tools ( a flat space ) will absolutely help so that you can get moving forward again.

We are retiring and moving to a home we have been renovating for 8 years. Our old home is Victorian with smaller rooms. Our new home is open design and there are fewer walls to put furniture against which also means we wont have as much storage. I knew I had to purge big time but lived in fear of doing so. We have the opportunity to move in stages and allow the new home to digest our items. I quickly realized that I had to purge A LOT!!!! I was scared. As time went on I started to donate boxes and boxes and more boxes and car loads of stuff. This was not the old me by any stretch, but quickly became me as I felt the satisfaction of not having the stuff nagging at me to DO SOMETHING with it all. Last weekend we had a garage sale and sold so few things even though we have nice quality stuff. I had had enough of moving it, pricing it, packing it and at the end of the sale we hauled 98% of what was left from the sale to a charity shop. IT FELT AMAZING. Since last weekend I have been absolutely ruthless at purging. There is not ONE THING out of all those “precious” items that I have missed. Now I even want to purge some of what we have moved to our new home! I cannot explain how great it is to be FREE of all the stuff. I still have a ways to go but the house feels so good. When all is said and done I bet we will purge 50-75% of our stuff and feel good about it. To everyone GET INTO IT AND DO SOME PURGING EVERY DAY or WEEK no matter how little. Best tip.... put the filled boxes in your car so you forget about what you packed and so you are not tempted to bring it back into your life!!! As the saying goes. “JUST DO IT” Trust me, it feels fabulous to let it all go.

Your video is helpful to me in recognizing the need to deal with the emotional part of the "overwhelm" first, dealing with all problems that cause us not to make the time to do what needs to be done and also the grace to allow ourselves to slow down and do what we can a bit at a time. I can identify with one of your illustrations about the couple and realize my need to stop expecting so much, yet it can be frustrating when you clean and organize for another only to find the mess gathering up again quickly and it feels like the time has been a waste. Would like to hear more about how to actually enjoy the process and not just do it out of obligation or because it has to be done. Organizing for myself is easy but organizing for family is harder.

Hi Sharon, I often work with women who have similar frustrations with family. It's possible to learn how to negotiate better agreements. Cleaning and decluttering is a family affair. It's often up to the wife/mother to make that happen. Routines, clarity, good agreements, and making the work more enjoyable can all be pieced together. Even a little change can make a big difference. Don't give up, learn a new way. Let me know if you want help along the way.

When I realized how painful it is to let go of things I have spent a lot of money on that I no longer "love" as I did when "I just had to have it," I realized how important it is to really consider how I might feel about the the thing I'm about to buy .. down the road and imagine myself having to let go of it. That's a great deterrent to buying things I really don't want to begin with. And I think about whether I really have space for it. Thank you Laura Moore for a wonderful lesson in how to get started in the process of letting go of things that we no longer need.
It's true what you said regarding how stages of our lives change. In learning this from you, it's given me an incentive to get started
with this task. I really never realized that emotion and slowing down could be a major part of this. It all makes sense though. Just
listening to you made me feel like I was in therapy with your soft spoken voice. You made all of this decluttering and emotional mess,

I know this video is over three years old, but I want to share a "photo" idea my mother had. She passed in 2008, but some years prior she called me on a Saturday morning and asked what I had planned and did I have any extra manilla envelopes. I did and headed to her house, finding her in the kitchen with 100s of photos laid out on every flat surface; table, chairs, counters, folding table, etc.
She had me look at all the photos and take anything I wanted. I believe I took about 6-8 photos. She then proceeded to gather photos by family (her cousins), told me who they were for, and had me write the name on an envelope, and placing the photos in it, and sealing it; laying it aside. After all the cousins were attended to, we discussed the remaining photos, which were former neighbors, people she or my father worked with, etc. Because we didn't know where they were or how to contact them, we discarded them.
The best thing of those photos were taking them to a family reunion, handing them to the cousins, and hearing the wonderful stories that resulted.

    • @helpmehealmyself9705
      @helpmehealmyself9705 3 роки тому +1

I agree wholeheartedly! While I am still able, I am giving the items that would remain after I pass to the people I want to have them. I ask first, and if they want it, I give it to them and get the pleasure of seeing them enjoy it. In that process, I am decluttering my environment, both emotionally and physically. Also, nobody has to fight over my belongings or wonder what they will get after I am gone. Initially, my children were uncomfortable with it, but then my 89 year old second cousin who lived 1.5 hours away, died and we had to empty her house.. in winter! That got them over it real quick.
She was a - how did Laura put it? - "person who lived in possibility". She fancied herself a collector and when HER mom, uncle, cousins died - in her house- she inherited their stuff. Then I inherited it all! It was very difficult and I am still in the process of dealing with it, and since some of it truly is collectible but not Sotheby's level, I am in process of keeping what to give to consignment and what to keep while it appreciates in value. Laura's video is very helpful.
Another sidebar, I notice that as I declutter, I am losing weight and sleeping better. A lot of my stuff is ideas of things I wanted to accomplish ((businesses I wanted to start, writings for a book I want to publish). As I sort through my papers, I am organizing them and acknowledging my success for whatever I did accomplish and forgiving myself for what I haven't accomplished yet (thank you, Laura, for that!)

Hi there, thanks for your comment! Yes, notice without the judgement, stuff gets messy or piles get bigger as we move through our days. Nothings wrong, that's natural. It simply needs more of our attention. So much easier to take care of our stuff without all the self-criticism. Thanks for subscribing, and take good care! Laura

Wonderful advice and lots of it! My friend/neighbour began a 30 day declutter challenge where day one was to get rid of 1 thing, day two to get rid of 2, day three, 3 etc. We got to day six and nine respectively. I now realise that it was the too much too soon problem. Trying to keep on top of it without any real planning was bound to fail. I am so much more prepared to get the job done properly now. We both knew the emotional side of things was affecting us and have talked it through but your emphasis on it and time management BEFORE the How and What has shone new light on our progress. I can't thank you enough for your advice and approach. Oh and I loved the photo party story😊

I started working with professional organizers in 2005 getting one to work with a friend in a crisis. It was awesome and I hired her for myself and my children. She helped my daughters,as high school seniors, organize their belongings to move into a dorm room at college. When she retired I hired a new one.I love love love the organizers I have worked with through the years!!! The original systems they established I have maintained. I am down to paper work. I make scrapbooks and do have many many bins of paper clutter . I have soooo much artwork from my children growing up now grandchildren. I had bookshelves built to enjoy my scrapbooks.

great video. Unfortunately, I only have 2 weeks to go from a 4 bedroom with attic, basement and garage to a small 2 bedroom, no attic, no basement, no garage. But, it is now just me and my husband, so this is a positive move and time for us to focus less on stuff and more on experiences. This is our mid way move. In two more years he retires and we will be downsizing again into a rv to travel. I thought it would be super easy as I normally love decluttering. But, really struggling to let stuff go.

Hi Teresa, So glad the ClutterClarity principles inspire you! So much of this work is how to think differently, so it's possible to move forward with ease and enjoyment. The attitude in which we enter the experience is much more important than doing the physical work perfectly. Being willing to learn... it's complex work, for sure. Honored that the principles suited your fasting! Thanks for your subscribing, and enjoy! Take good care, Laura

Fear works! It's to bad we can convince ourselves that we are going to take our stuff somewhere with us. We like our stuff! Especially when it's good stuff! Because of not wanting my kids to do a job only I can really do properly, and financial reasons, I did it! I emptied a whole pod myself; with prayer and inviting all the people I ever loved in spirit; to be with me. It wasn't easy at first; emotionally I was challenged. But, the first day, 2 hrs. The next, 3. Not every day; through cold, rain, and overcast weather. But there was a man on the property that kept checking on me☺. It is good to have someone around. I gave most of it away. To a rescue mission, thrift shop, New to You, friends, and some consignment. It took a little more than a month. Being 69 helped a lot!😂 That was Jan. My other unit😌, which is what I sorted and thought I might keep; is next😳 I can do it! And it does feel good to let it all go to people who can use and need my good stuff! If I had space to live I probably would want to keep more. But I don't. And I'm not getting younger!😍It's really quite O.K and I definately have more peace of mind about my future.

you make perfect sense to me!! having lived in Worcester, Ma for 43 years and dealing with the hustle and bustle of raising my sons. now, living in Clover , SC, for the last 5 years, I've learned to be slower. (having just moved into my 1st house} Being emotionally and financially bent on fixing up my grandmother's property, I was needing everything to be done NOW. Your just the therapy I need but I refuse to be a DIY person because the need to be perfect is insane. It's better to hire a perfectionist. I went from giving myself 4 months to fixing this shack to cottage to 12 months inside and 12 months landscaping. Life is great again.

I wanted a small shop after I retired. Than I became ill life started to really happen one thing after another. You gave me so much hope tonight put a completely different perspective widowed 42 . My 2 nd husband shamed me for all what I call my treasures . Lol I knew I wanted to go through it & I would get rid of what I could each time I could find enough energy to do it. shadrach my husband died last year and I find getting rid of his things is SO hard. I have found places that will benefit from his clothing, but can only work a little a week going through them. I find as I clear his clothing I also give away my clothing I no longer use. This seems to ease the pain. I also have saved a few of his favorite pieces of clothing to make a memory wall hanging from pieces of each. I am keeping down to a few of his very favorite pieces. I also plan to incorporate some of his other special treasures that will work to enhance the memory wall hanging.

A big reason people are clutters/hoarders is this kind of chore is solitary and most people don’t like being by themselves and can’t compartmentalize and become overwhelmed. It’s a vigilance to put the things you own away (in their place) and maintain that.

I am the collector in my home and my husband nags me constantly to declutter our space. He always tells me what I or we should get rid of and I love all my things and find it very sad and I resent him telling me which items should go. We are moving to an 1150 sq ft condo when the 2500 sq ft house sells. The first thing he sold was the entire back deck furniture ,chairs table side tables umbrellas etc one day when I was out. He was very excited about the sale but my heart was broken because he got rid of "our" stuff. It was a very bad day for me and I was totally destroyed to say the least. Since then he has sold lots of furniture that would not fit into our new place and I realized that that was the right thing to do. I still get a very sad feeling when I am asked to go through my stuff to either sell or take to a resale store and I cannot shake this awful feeling. Am I just being greedy or I like everyone else? You are very in tune with this decluttering so your input would be appreciated. Thankyou.
