I'm guardedly hopeful for Outer Worlds 2. I loved the first game, but could see it clearly had much more they'd wanted to do but couldn't due to budgetary constraints.

And you think they dont have budgetary constraints now ? Lol...where do you live ? Everything is double as expensive nowadays, so you can bet your own ass its way worse now then it was 5 years ago...for a company, and with the inflated taxes ? With the world politicians getting greedier and greedier and more corrupt by the millisecond ? The world population doing nothing just taking it like a champ up their ass ? Letting them steal everything we have ? Dont get your hopes up, I only wish Outer Worlds 2 will be as good as OW1. At least that, Obsidian should try to achieve, then mission accomplished.

Outer Worlds wonderfully delivered on its premise. It wasn't built to be an infinite sandbox of possibilities like Skyrim or Fallout. It was built to be a puzzlebox that hands you a swiss army knife. It has two, maybe three playthrough's worth of content if you really rinse it out, but the point is about giving the player the tools to approach the game entirely as they choose. If you don't want to kill anyone, you can do that. If you want to kill everyone you run into, that works too. Extreme examples, but furthermore, whether you choose melee, stealth, guns, science weapons, speech, leadership, solo or an actual idiot as a playstyle, you can finish the game without ever being demanded to compromise from your chosen style.
Maybe the person who sells you the navkey really annoys you and you don't want to help her. Sneak behind her and steal the navkey from the safe instead of working out a deal. You can take over Edgewater with a robot army if you want to! The game wants you to play it your way and it's wonderful.

It’s a fun game full of possibilities but Obsidian had no clue how to design fun, engaging combat. Enemies might as well be made of butter and you never feel threatened, which drains any sense of tension or challenge. It’s so easy it’s as if you’re playing with cheats on, and there’s no excuse for that.

There are, but the issue is that it feels like the devs had no clue about how to balance the combat and overall difficulty. If you want a typical Normal mode sort of challenge for example, with peaks and valleys of hard sections and easy sections, you’re not going to get that, even if you play on Hard. I can’t speak for Super Nova, the hardest difficulty I believe, but I think that just makes enemies super tanky and introduces Perma Death and survival mechanics.

After playing the game 4 times ( my go to smooth talking run, genocide run, low intelligence run and super nova run) and I still love it. But I do have issues with it I would like to see resolved in the sequel.
    1. The leveling was way too lenient and by the end of the game you were practically a god who was great at everything.
    2. The gun play is serviceable but the AI and enemy variety was very bad. Most of the enemy's either just rushed you or ran for cover to then shoot you very basic. And most of the enemy's were either Canids, Marauders, Raptadons, Primals or Mechanicals.
    3. The dialog while very well written was very almost like a rubber band. I would make a different choice in dialog and I think I would be getting new dialog but I would get a new snippet then it would rubber band back to the default response.
    4. Choices felt very hollow, if I helped one side I would still be able to help the other. There were no real consequences to my actions. It was like if I was in one part of the world the others didn't exist. And most major choice boiled down to help one side or the other or compromise and everyone is happy. There were no real gut wrenching decisions.
    5. The NPCs were not very dynamic and felt like old Morrowind characters. They just stand in place waiting for you to come by and give them a reason to exist.
Those are my main problems but most can be fixed with proper time and budget. Hopefully obsidian has learned from the outer worlds and we can see their growth in Avowed. And even more so in The outer worlds 2.

I finally got to play it last month and I absolutely loved it, but unfortunately the main story was really short. Even with doing some side quests, I only got to about 25 hours play time. Hate to say but the quests are incredibly boring with all kinds of political faction fetch quests that do little to make me care. I hope that changes soon. However, where this game wins for me is in at least two areas - First, interesting and even hilarious characters and dialogue, like you said, especially in your party. Dark witty humor, a la Guardians of the Galaxy. Other games like this have included a lot of corny or silly humor, but this game went into fifth gear with the dark and even mean humor, and I eat that right up. The personality of these characters is way more appealing than anything in Bethesda‘s games. Second, graphics are better than the trailer showed in my opinion.

A few years ago I tried playing Skyrim, and didn’t end up liking it, though that was 100% for subjective reasons. Finished this game last night. It was freaking amazing. So much fun and the writing was brilliant and hilarious. I loved the characters and it had a more nuanced look at a revolution than many other stories. (Phineas is my fav character, love the man.) So many dialogue options too! I legitimately do not understand how people can say this game is bad. But hey, I didn’t like Skyrim, so what do I know lol

I'm not sure why the age of a game should hold any barring on if a game is "still" good or not, I will still go back to WWF No Mercy on the N64 as one of the best beat em up games of all time, and Super Mario 3 is still to this day one of my all time favorite video games. If a game held up when you first played it, then it still holds up today. Minus graphics, at which point you should just buy a painting if you want something beautiful to look at.

Couldn't be asked to achievement hunt, but I damn near completed everything it had to offer. It was a neat game, while it lasted, and that's not to discredit it, because it actually had a lot more endings than what I asked of FO3/4 and Skyrim. Maybe I should sample some soundtracks.

My main complaint with these mega open worlds is that there’s very little to do. Take Assassin’s Creed for instance; I think it’s amazing that they can recreate Egypt or Greece… but if all you have is empty land with the occasional basic fetch quest, what’s the point?

  • @RedshirtAfficionado
    @RedshirtAfficionado Рік тому +5

Outer Worlds is one of those mixed bag kind of games. Every time I notice something good, something equally bad sticks out to me. You often have multiple choices to finish quests but these quests are seldom mentioned by anyone again. It had an in depth reputation system but no penalty for stealing and a pretty shallow end result (nobody mentions your reputation until you’re kill on sight, where the entire faction comically flips on their killswitches in front of you for refusing to turn in their quest item)
The weapon mod system gives you a fair deal of options, but there isn’t much variety in mods and weapon tinkering makes a lot of guns pointless. The weapons are neat but half of the roster are just the same guns with better stats. There’s a LOT of character writing but most of it feels a little flat, and the corporations are straight up cartoon villains with no nuance whatsoever.
Outer Worlds is worth playing but I don’t see myself coming back to it, especially seeing how few mods there are.

    - Perks (were very basic and boring)
    - Loot (no variation at all)
    - Npcs (no npc schedules, they were just there standing doing nothing)
    - Consumables (are useless)
    - Stores (sell the same gear and weapons you can collect by just killing enemies)

Have been thinking of writing my first review ever since nearing the end of my play through with Atlas Fallen.
Being that “perfectly casual/intermediate RPG” game I’ve been itching for.
You were mentioning in the start how the outer worlds is but not too big. I’m on 23 hours in Atlas fallen; with I’d say 70-80% completing everything and exploring as I go.
I remember loving OW when I played through it for that exact reason. Same with the Metro series. RPGs and/or story games that are open world but not exhausting to even think about playing, yet still leave room for experimentation.
Anyway, whoever reads this, Atlas fallen is awesome, if it interests you go for it. I think it’s worth the 60$ I spent.

Honestly, I wasn't thrilled with this game. It had some funny dialogue, but my biggest issue with the game was that my actions didn't feel like they mattered outside of the planet I was on. These big corporations weren't affected by anything you were doing outside of their planet, and nobody came to really know you by name or your ship. You were a stranger everywhere you went. Even in New Vegas, rumors of your deeds would spread and people would know of what you did through hearsay and the radio broadcasts. Having a slight reputation loss or inability to use certain stores didn't really immerse me into the world.
But maybe I'm just too used to games where you're the center of the universe. Mass Effect, Fallout, etc.

There are far worse games, but The Outer Worlds is aggressively mediocre, especially coming from Obsidian, and the simplistic one-note “corporations are bad and dumb” joke got old in a hurry. It felt like the majority of their development time was spent on the Edgewater and Groundbreaker hub areas, but then they ran out of money and didn’t flesh out the rest of the game, which felt half-baked and hastily rushed together with lots of re-used assets. The gear/level balancing falls off a cliff really quickly too and becomes so ridiculously easy midway through that I mostly stopped engaging with the skill system. It’s a surprisingly small and shallow game that is saved by some well written and voice acted companions.
Here’s hoping they get the resources they need to make a much better sequel.

    • @Colonel_Mustsard
      @Colonel_Mustsard Рік тому +1

That isn't how it is at all. If you skip all the dialogue in the game then yes it appears that way because it's surface level intentionally. If you listen to conversations then you'll actually begin to notice it's a pretty even split depending on your perspective, which is the entire point of an RPG. You play a role.
It does fall off slightly in Monarch but the pacing picks up again just fine in Byzantium. Gear and level balancing doesn't fall off at all. They specifically include a perk that doubles the amount of bonus points armour gives you because it's encouraging you to build into a specific playstyle and see how you can use it to overcome challenges. Then the perk and collecting certain armour pieces allows for a little diversity in skills where you haven't pumped a load of points. I actually found this refreshing compared to every late game in RPG's where you just mow through enemies and beat every skill check with collecting items made entirely unnecessary. I'm currently in Byzantium in my playthrough, still needing to collect weapon and armour parts because resources actually run out.
It's strange. Most people complain this game is way too short but then have no patience to actually sit and explore the world, then call it a shallow experience.

I didn't like this game at first but after revising it a few times I am finally coming to appreciate it. Partially because I played star citizen for a while and then returned to this simple game. While the game is very simple it's still fun and the setting is absolutely beautiful. While Star Citizen has spent 500M developing a boring simulator with little actual gameplay, and boring/bland worlds with nothing to do or explore. I know that there is no comparison of these two in terms of the "type" of games they are, but I guess playing something like SC that has had so much money/effort poured into it, and its still not fun at all just makes me appreciate every other game that much more.

YES SIR The Outer Worlds is my absolute favorite game of all time (I have yet to play Fallout New Vegas though, so that might change). I played the game over the summer last year, and it's been the only video game I've ever played to genuinely make me cry. I felt so connected with the characters and the stuff so many of them were going though, and I felt that my choices in the game reflected my values in real life, and that was a very special experience for me. Also, peril on gorgon made me SOB, running through that dlc was, I think, the best and one of the most impactful parts of the game. Seriously couldn't recommend this game enough, I'm thinking about running through it again with a different build and character so I can see the other parts of the story i missed the first time.
