Here in Britain, I learnt about South Africa's CitiGolf through an excellent book published in 1999 'Volkswagens Of The World'. The writer, Simon Glen is Australian and I was so impressed with his coverage of VW activity away from the European market, I made contact with him, in Australia through the publishers. We had some nice communication.
Volkswagen in German means car of the people. I am very happy that in South Africa at least, they partly stuck to this for much longer. Here in Germany, VW has seen itself as more of a competitor to Mercedes since the turn of the millennium. Having a similar car to the Citi Golf here would be incredible, since Mark 1 Golfs are getting rare because of the rust.
My 1st car was a used Citi Shuttle 1.6. Was very basic, no fancy functions, no radio, seats was not very comfortable and steering was difficult since it had no power steering. Was very reliable and affordable to maintain. After 12 years I was able to upgrade and bought a used '03 Golf 4 GTI. Still drive my GTI 10 years later and love it.
Another great video about a great South African Icon. We have some great car stories to share with the world and another very low key but interesting one is that of the Daihatsu Charade G11,which resembles the Mk1 Golf, boxy and with very 80s straight lines and sharp angles. The Daihatsu was built in collabartion with Alfa Romeo in Brits and according to Roger Mcleery, they were kanniedood automobiles that kept going in durability tests. Roger is another SA motorsport historian that could share some great anectdotes about his time at Alfa Romeo with another SA story, the uniquely South African GTV6.
Great video i enjoyed it ,i built and own a 93 Cti its my pride and joy i drive it on some sundays to church with the family. We love the basic design and the old car smell.
slowly becoming my south african youtuber! i also want the citi golf to be my very first car to those wondering, i don't really care about the new tech'd out cars
I had two, a yellow 1.3 1985, and a black 1.6 sport 1986 with a nice black and white chequered bucked seat interior, white Gti 1 rims. I loved that car so much, my pride and joy.
Literally the greatest car ever made for the South African market , this thing was literally still in production up untill 2009 the Golf 6 has been at that time been released for a year already , yes the polo broke sales records but the polo Vivo style Polo's came at a time where every young person had money unlike when the MK1 first was on the production line guarenteed if they added a few amenities to a MK1 today it'll sell like hotcakes especially if it's South Africa's cheapest car
Thanks for this tribute to this awesome piece of local history. My mate got a 2007 model when we were in matric in 2011 and we made some epic memories with it. It felt like a similar time. The Polo had launched I think, but now we have the Golf, the Polo, the Polo Vivo, and the Up! too.
This was vary well produced andpresented video. Well done. Althogh my father never owned a citi golf I have rode in one at one point. And it's true even now it's rare not to run onto one of these modified or stock.
Very well done! This is a very well balanced presentation about the CitiGolf. UA-cam's algorithm must have liked something that you did, because it suggested your video to me, I assume, simply based on the mention you made of the classic Mini. I have viewed several of those doco-type videos on Minis recently. I miss seeing the Mk1 Golf on roads here in New Zealand. I certainly notice them IF ever I see one, but more likely at a car show. A handful of actual CitiGolfs were imported to NZ by other South Africans who migrated here. Those Mk1's are SO iconic and VERY collectable here. Keep up the great work and BEST wishes!
Very good video. My first car was a vw fox.. was rusted to bit but you dad bought it for me to motivate me to get off my ass and get my licence.. loved the car, banged in some good money into it and was once told it was the hottest fox they'd ever seen.. I miss that car dearly
Brilliant video, you have a subscriber! In 2019 I bought a 1984 Alfa from Oudtshoorn. It has taken this many years to find out the floor pan was made in South Africa. I am absolutely convinced if they could make a floor pan, they pressed the rest of the panels there. Every so called expert, says they were made from kits. I would love to see a video on Alfa Romeo’s amazing history in South Africa. With the meatball GTV6. The Guilietta that was the best selling car in South Africa. I think you would have a lot of fun making it, and it would get a lot of views. But what I would also love you to do, is explain local content percentages. My car has locally made glass and seat fabric, and floor pan. That’s only….say...20% of weight. That’s why I think the other panels were made there. It is ridiculously rust free and original
Great vid. Maybe do a vid on the Golfs biggest competitor, the Opel Kadette. When seeing rhe success of the Citi Golf they brought out the Cub....also quite successful not as much as the Citi but still a nice entry car. I almost bought one as my first car
This makes the golfs appearance in the game Anger Foot make so much more sense. Also makes me kinda jealous, the UK moved on with the newer versions so the older ones are rarer but the look of the MK1 and MK2 are so cool, dream of mine to own one.
lovely little cars these, except for all the little flaws like the door handle pins and so on theyre just fun to have, fun to drive. the launch red/yellow/blue ones used mostly exactly the same tooling as the mk1, but shortly afterwards they added a little detail thats not often seen, but once seen you can't unsee it ever again....there's a crease in an L shape behind the c-pillar, added to strengthen the panel and stop accidental dents. Its one of the easiest ways to tell a citi from a mk1 (although, very very early citi's never had the crease)....(compare the cars at 6:04 and 8:17) I'd love it if you'd have ventured to the CTi...the successor the the mk1 GTi and used by the police extensively. It was a really really good looking car in ice white.
Great Vid... I am gonna be on the lookout for more from you. all the best bud I do still drive my 18 year old Citi and honestly struggling to let it go.... Cos it just does its job so damn well.
Golf is loved all over Europe , but obvious.we had many generations , I've 4 A MK2 Dreg 86 GTi 16 V , 2 Mk4s a 01 GT TDI PD 150 , an 03 GT TDi 130 & a Mk5 GTD 170. I've got a 2014 Leon Cupra 290 a better car than a Mk7 Golf GTi & Golf R.
This was sold alongside other generations, we just continued producing them, it's not like the others weren't sold here. I've owned a Seat as well. Didn't like the cheap feel of the vehicles, I've owned every GTi from the MK1 to the MK 7.5. still contemplating on getting the new one or going for the R

No. The Tazz had a much shorter life cycle and the variety of offerings was only 2. It was quite granny like in its trim. The Citi Golf culturally permeated far deeper and wider than the Tazz which may have been a more reliable and modern car. The Citi Golf had a number of economical and high performance options and was always more fashionable with its trim.

The BABVVO in Germany will bann exhaust gas pollution from 2027 and that is what will happen in entire EU also bann of all tires and brakes because of fine dust!!
