Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial. Will get doing the same thing on a therma tru door later this year. Our original gel stain from from builder has faded from the weather.
Hi
Thank you! How long has it held up?
Russ
Good video, Russ keep it going 🇺🇸

Super helpful!! Thank you 😊
Thanks!
Looking great, Russ!
Thank you Pat!’
Good video....any drywall videos coming out soon?
No!
Hi Russ, I'm wondering why you used an oil-based gel stain again instead of a regular oil-based stain, since the stain you removed was gel and didn't hold up to the sun very well? I'm preparing to stain my new Therma-Tru fiberglass door, so I'm researching different products etc. Your videos are so helpful!
Hi
It held up good given the circumstances. Any door exposed to southern exposer will eventually fade.
Russ
A regular oil based stain can be used on any raw wood, you can not use regular oil based stain on a fiberglass door, well you can but it will look horrible. Gel stain is specialized for fiberglass doors and even pre existing finishes.
Thank you Russ. I have the same door. Wanted to re-stain. I did it wrong a bad process. Thanks for the video. You made my wife a believer LOL... (no joke) Beautiful job Thanks! Life saver video...
Hello Norman
Thank you very Much! What did you do?
Russ
Great video! Ty so much
Thank you!
Hello Russ. Very good video and easy to follow along. I have a question about the stain. Your end result is very dark and that is what we desire for our new Masonite Fiberglass front entry door. The Minwax (66050000) Gel Stain at our big box store has a much lighter picture on the can for the Mahogany gel stain. It is more of a red tint. Is your door as dark as it appears in the video? Is it because you applied two coats? Thank you in advance for your reply.
Hello Chris
Thanks for your Nice comment and questions. I also have a new series that I just put out a few weeks that deals with the same circumstances and includes all the full Timelapses that I did so you can follow along. The Gel Stain changes over time and gets lighter and really looks like stained wood after a few years. Just look at the door before I started to strip it. The door was initially done with the same Mohogany gel stain the 1st time and it fades due to exposure from the Sun. So it starts off dark, and then changes to look like it stained wood!
Russ
Nice work. Maybe consider keeping a door stop with your painting stuff so the door isn’t constantly moving around on you.
Yes Good Call!
I'm right in the middle of doing this too, Thank you for the Info. Helped.
No Problem! How’s it going?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow going well, double doors are prepared, ready to coat today. Just have to get the brush you featured.
@MrFishingca nice! How did it come off?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I sanded and wiped. Came out clean.
@MrFishingca Awesome! What stripper did u use?
Looks great so far.
Is the gel stain you’re using more like the consistency of a traditional stain or more like a paint?
Hi
It’s more than half way in between! You can control the film thickness!
Russ
The consistency is nothing like either. It's a gel stain, so it's thick like pudding.
Yes agree. It’s like the consistency of Jelly. As in peanut butter and Jelly!
Thanks for the video! My Therma Tru door is 12 years old and faded on the outside. Do I need to completely stop the old stain or can I just stain over the existing door? Also. I've heard that we should only use Therma tru stain...thoughrs??
Hi Kavita
Yes you need to strip it. Was your door sealed with polyurethane after it was del stained 12 years ago? You can use any of the gel stains from different manufacturers. What was originally used?
Russ
Thanks for the response! Originally the installer used the Therma Tru stain kit. I still have it...or what ever is left of it. :) The kit has mineral spirits, some stain, and a sealer. I thought it may be a better idea to buy some minwax gel stain to refinish the outside of the door. The inside still looks fine!
Hi Kavita
The MinWax Gel Stain is really thick and a Great product to use on these doors!
Russ
I would like to buy the brand of paint . Where I can order that paint..??
Look in the description of video! Where u from?
I have a fiberglass door that the stain in worn on. I was to refinish it and do the gel stain on it. How do I go about getting the old stain off? What product should I use?
Hello Regina
In this video series , I use the Citris Strip to remove the old Gel Stain from the fiberglass door. Did you watch all of the videos in this series?
Russ
Hi, what would you recommend to repair fiber glass door to fix small blemishes? I could send photos
Ok yes please!
Did you send them?
Therma Tru specifies acrylic based stains and paints. Why are you using an Oil-based stain? What is the benefit and/or risk? Does it void the warranty?
Hi
Thanks for your question! They recommend using a high quality, heavily pigmented , oil based stain. Gel Stains can also be used. Personally, The only type of stain that will work is a Gel Stain. It’s way thicker than stain, so you have to work it in a bit and use a rag if it gets to be too thick. I only use Oil on Doors and not water based products because they hold up better, but are more challenging to apply! I don’t know about the warranty! Therma Tru also recommends using a Methylene Chloride stripper to remove old finish, but I chose to use a safer Non NMP Citristrip stripper. I also used an Oil based Polyurethane to Seal the door after doing 2 coats of the Oil based Gel Stain.
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Thank you for your response. Have you used the Therma Tru brand “Same Day Stain” and how would you compare it to the MinWax??
Hello
No I haven’t used that same day stain. I have only used the MinWax Gel Stains on Fiberglass doors and then a Oil based Polyurethane to seal the door in!
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow , how does the Minwax hold up? How often does it need to be recoated on Therma tru fiberglass?
Hi Sammie
It holds up good provided you seal the door with a varnish or polyurethane. It also depends if the door gets Southern Exposure. If it’s in the sun all day it’s not going to last as long as if it where in the shade all day with Norrhen Exposure!
Russ
Wow not seen you in years, where ya been? Hope all is well.
Thanks Ant!
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Mate, always like your vidios, please keep it up.
