Duvone pulled out all the stops in this piece and I for sure thought Renegades had this one in the bag. From all the runs to the key changes and to the singing. I know that Duvone is comeback stronger next year and bring the win!!!

Renegades dropped the match winning ball on final night...... One never comes second in a race but rather loses first place..... The fight to the finish was More Soca Music versus Theatrics ......Both Despers and Massy up their game musically on final night..... Duvonne's strength is being able to complement his arrangement with story telling which made him top the Semi finals.......It is quite possible the judges were distracted by the story and missed parts of the music..... Exceptional arranger and has created a niche for himself as one who is not afraid to take chances...... He reminds me of Clive Bradley.......The top three bands were inseparable on final night ....Still a Renegades and Duvonne Fan........ Great Panorama 2020

After one year I’m listening this tune on carnival Tuesday 2021, OMG THE JAM ON THIS TUNE‼️ Duvone is such a boss at middles music WOW renegades‼️ if this had won then his “good morning” piece a few years ago was supposed to win because they are very similar in composition.
Despers won the 2020 panorama, talk done. It's very rear that everyone would agree with the winning panorama arrangement. Last year some had said All Stars or Despers won but it was Renegades. Those three bands are very strong and if you look at the year books in terms of wins it's 12, 11 and 10 more than half of the panorama winners. Congratulations to Desperadoes and all other bands. The standard was high please continue.
As a die hard I would say that too much acting in the front went a little to far as a distraction.. it kinda killed the bands performance.. though I'd really like a copy of the judges comments.. still supporting my renegades for life.. #1
Yeah I have to agree DJ, the one thing I don't like that Duvone is still doing is all the theatrics in front of the band. It's distracting. Plus the fireworks was a bit much. The electronic sign board was a new thing, but not sure if it has a place in a steel orchestra. At least he did something new. And the new finale for the arrangement was fantastic. I loved that. Renegades for life!
@@panfan623 the acting was a big distraction, i enjoyed the arrangement for the prelims and semis, but the acting totally distracted me from listenning a and not really a norm to look away from a band to concentrate on the arrangements so im sure some judges resort to this forcefully and would definetly affect their decision... however the LED screens i think its a fantasstic new element to add im all for modern take on the steel band just like i was for exodus going without canopy, although it may have affected the sound i believe if band invested more into this concept probably would find a way to get the sound similiar to having canopy...
@@alalexander9697 I think it's high time for Exodus to put those canopies back, it might be affecting their overall scores. Jit tried to do that back in 1991 and I think it cost him an historic 3-peat.
Renegades fan through and through. Stewart has continued Jit's tradition of putting forward the most orchestrally complex music happening in pan. BUT, this tune was just too heavy. Sections bled into each other without distinction, there was no four lara four/bees melody breakdown moment to launch us from part I to part II. Some really cool things happening, but holistically didn't give the narrative it was looking for.
Martin Conte I’ve been swaying this from the prelims. Maybe it’s unfair criticism due to the very high standard he set for himself over the last few years,but personally this arrangement was very confusing and a lil too much of the antics infront the band
Renegades is my favorite band but this year they had the spirit of Clive Bradley and Desparadoes to deal with - you could hear and see it in the music and performance, Congrats to the Desparadoes Family. I love this arrangement but was very distracted by the "Show" - I feel that had something to do with the judging.

Verse (1:32 - 2:02): straightforward in the front lines, however cellos and basses moving real nice and sweet. Look out for the basses moving up between their patterns
Chorus : straightforward and precise to the song Chorus Bridge : basses cut out to allow a different feel and note the cellos singing inside there. Basses come back in with drops to enter the chorus to the bridge to the variated verse. (2:02 - 2:32) Chorus Bridge : cellos and basses have nice runs moving underneath a reworked chorus on the frontline. Notice how using some lines from song in the runs that background plays. Also, listen for the "Hook me already". Then before the variated verse, he reuses the ending to 2019 "Hookin Meh" with the wedding march theme and similar drops (2:32 - 3:02)
Variated Verse (3:02 - 3:48): classic cello solo begins, frontline then enters with the verse while the cellos continue. Then a run between the cellos and frontline usher the change where the frontline is now running and the cellos have the second half of the verse "we make a wish...", also note the chords and the basses as they move inside, then nice drops to enter the variated chorus
Variated Chorus Part One (3:48 - 4:32): signature Duvone vrtd. chorus playing the refrain with complimentary runs in between and then continues to frontline run into a small jam. The band reaches to a drop where the seconds and cellos play "when I do it, she say put yuh back into it.." and we continue Variated chorus part two (4:32 - 4:51): cellos hold the chorus melody while the frontline runs and then the band enters into a unison phrase and call&answer to enter the jam
Jam (4:51 - 5:51): really nice cello lines, frontline enters with "Oh Lord!" and continues to their solo while the background holds the jam. Band cuts, runs and drops inside there as well. This ushers in the passage to a jam/solo section

Outside of the intro and ending there wasn't enough reworking of the arrangement from the prelims and semis. Power and execution were in large part the saving grace, but it lacked a fresher narrative for the finals compared to Despers, All Stars, Phase II and even Invaders. Still a mighty arrangement overall but strive to take more risks, especially in the final round.
You're exactly right JB. While I think the arrangement from the Prelims was great, Duvone didn't really change much outside of that great finale for the Finals version. I guess you can argue that the arrangement he came up with didn't need much tweaking since the band was leading heading into the Finals but still, like you said he could done something more for the Finals. The other bands certainly did especially All-Stars, I really enjoyed their Finals version of More Sokah.
Desperados took 1st place and All Stars tied for 2nd, but Renegades made History - with that ending. To me, that ending changed the game. Arranger knocked it out of the park!!! Best in the entire competition. Overall, a melodic, passionate, enjoyable arrangement that people can follow because it flows so beautifully from section to section. Renegades is my personal favorite again this year.

To me Renegades still have a problem with pans and playing. I have said it before and I will say it again… Even with the runs and sounding like they stuck in a rot... All Stars sounded much cleaner and sweeter. Renegades could have won this if they only played the pan and not pound it. Clarity in the large bands is most important and when you have a band of 120 spread across such a big stage the sound is loud enough without the amplification. Desperadoes won because they played with finesse and the clarity was outstanding. All Stars was the cleanest on the night as they always are, however the melodic rot they are stuck in was the nail that stopped them from first place. With Dr Jit, Renegades had a tightness and fullness they no longer have. Because Zander is from the old school, he knows how to keep a tight ship and cool vibe…That’s what won the night.
The best of The night. The only reason you guys didn't win it's because (and I agree) you choose an outsider song. I said from jump, this tune is weak. It has no verse for pan and it's too simple, only 2 chords. But, you guys made it a master piece.
This is what separates an average arranger from an excellent arranger, the ability to take a trash tune and make something out of it. That's why this young man is good at what he does. However, it's time they cut the trash skits. They suck, big time. It also degrades the presentation. Someone should have the guts to tell him he is lousy as an actor. Stick to arranging. They had this all rapped up but somehow found a way to shoot themselves in the foot.
I've played these two arrangements (Desperadoes and Renegades) several times. This is my personal conclusion without bias for any of the bands. Based on arrangements only without the theatrics, Renegades arrangement was much better. Desperadoes intro upto 2:50 was great. Beyond 2:50 to the finish they just went dry with a lot of disconnect in their parts. Whereas, Renegades just had those smooth seamless transitions, combine with very good execution. Also, the body of the tune was just solid including the percussion (loved that iron section). But, if the judges said Despers won, so be it. Congratulations.
Rick Mathison you said without bias but this sounded extremely bias in my opinion. I’m a supporter of both bands, but despers already had an edge with those howling basses, and zanda’s endless use of motifs throughout the entire arrangement was what set them apart from the second place winners, you could literally hear Nailah singing in every note they played. And as mentioned before because of their heavy used that phrase “more sokah” you could walk in at any point of the tune and know what song they playing!
Renegades got robbed again, just like in 2014 when they got robbed with Defosto's "In de Minor". Renegades probably holds the record for getting robbed at Panorama. There' s no way that Despers won. Despers didn't even beat All Stars, All I heard from Despers was old cliches, old runs, noise and confusion. It was very difficult to follow Despers flow. The clear winner tonight was Renegades. Something has to be done about the judges and judging. Even if they said All Stars won, it would have been hard to swallow, but, that would have been closer to the truth. I think the best Despers did, was 5th place.

I am not a despers fan...last year when they played "iron man" it was tame compared to el dorado secondary...however this year they played this tune "sweeter"than any body else....all bands use old cliches including renegades...despers was exciting and sweet throughout
Chrisie Padmore I definitely had put invaders above renegades this year in terms of arrangement, renegades only edged them out in execution by a bit, but despers was heavenly!!!

After listening over and over again in isolation, no doubt, Renegades was by far the best of the night. ALL Stars and Invaders second .Despers reminds me of the 1970s style arrangements. They were too long and drawn out, needless to say,confusing at times. Humans are the worst species when it comes to judging. We're bias to our own interest.
i can clearly see that you really knows nothing about steel band, nor music, having played with both bands an 3 others on the night you clearly don't know what you are talking about, and i love renegades they are like our brother bands back in the UK but this year Duvone changed up the music if you look back at the last two panorama tunes, they were more simplified this one was over arranged

Obviously a clear winner based on all judging criteria however I knew they would not win as they played a song by a Non-Trinidadian. Can anyone tell me a panorama winning song that was not sung by someone who was not Trinidadian.

After listening over and over again in isolation, no doubt, Renegades was by far the best of the night. ALL Stars and Invaders second .Despers reminds me of the 1970s style arrangements. They were too long and drawn out, needless to say,confusing at times. Humans are the worst species when it comes to judging. We're bias to our own interest.

i can clearly see that you really knows nothing about steel band, nor music, having played with both bands an 3 others on the night you clearly don't know what you are talking about, and i love renegades they are like our brother bands back in the UK but this year Duvone changed up the music if you look back at the last two panorama tunes, they were more simplified this one was over arranged
