As a queer woman, I feel like I have not been represented here. Moreover, queer women face something equally scary. There have been so many instances where cis-het men have tried to pass off as a lesbian woman, making fake profiles just to then blackmail and/or threaten us. As a woman, I feel scared revealing my sexuality online.
I would have liked to hear some comments from the people of other sex and gender in LGBTQ+ community. For example, there was no representation of female sex or non-binary people. A survey on what percentage of such people are actually comfortable in using these dating apps will also be interesting
The person who pointed out there’s patriarchy and hierarchy among LGBTQ+ members was spot on. I disagree with the term ‘community’ to describe us because we haven’t reached a level of absolute equality. A Non-Disabled Neurotypical Cisgender Savarna Man will hold greater power, be over represented and pathologised as a blanket statement against the notion of non-mainstream ways of being.
A community doesn't necessarily mean all the people in that community are equal though. All that you say is absolutely true, but doesn't take away from the community aspect of lgbtq+ people. Of course there are assholes in every community, as well as systemic biases. But as long as they are addressed, I don't see why thinking of it as a community should be an issue.
Why do I feel like most of these problems occur in heterosexual dating apps as well. Like there's nothing new about it, dating apps in general whether queer or not can be pretty dangerous...
More problems like people hiding their STD status, MsM not getting tested for STDs on regular basis, unawareness about the different gender identities and using the umbrella terms, people unnecessarily sending nude pics and starting conversation with a pic rather by a greeting, all these problems would take a century or more to solve.
Does anyone know what happened before 377 ? Because I know some villages where god slaves( a tradition) used to be practiced by biological females and transwomen together.
Thank you for such an enlightening video, Swaddle! Though I have friends from LGBTQ+ communities and I did hear about the problem from them, so had some bare minimum idea of the same, but this video helped me to understand the problem, in a better way.
