This video shows how to replace the agitator dogs in a Whirlpool Direct Drive washer. These agitator dogs are a necessary part of the agitator, without them working correctly, the wash action won't be very good. The agitator dogs help the "corkscrew" part of the washer to push the articles to be washed down to the bottom where they can be properly agitated for the best soil removal. The other articles get pushed up, and the cycle repeats. If these agitator dogs aren't working correctly, you may find the washer isn't cleaning effectively.
Fortunately these are an inexpensive part, and most homeowners will have the simple tools needed to complete this repair.
Great job! VERY informative & useful for all of us, who only have "average" repair skills . . thanks!! I followed your advice exactly, & have now successfully repaired my Whirlpool for about $5.00 (new agitator dogs & a new O-ring seal)!! Great job explaining the necessary details, & having good camera angles to show us what you were explaining! And, you were absolutely correct (in one of your replies in the Comments section) - the O-ring is a tad tricky to get seated properly! I used a small dab of liquid soap to lubricate the rubber O-ring, & that really helped to get it seated more easily!! Also, I second the kudos on your simple, yet VERY effective, paper towel idea!! . . will be using THAT on other jobs! THANKS & keep up the good work!!
Thanks very much Tracy! See, 5 bucks and your EXCELLENT washer is still doing its thing. Never get rid of that machine, they don't make them like this anymore! Yes, soap on the o-ring makes a big difference. They get old and dried out and don't slide in there easily and it's a real pain to get them seated, but the soap usually does the trick.
The paper towel trick has saved me on so many occasions! Something my dad taught me years ago, I'll always remember!
Anyway, great job on repairing your washer, here's to many more years of service!
New subscriber here. I found this video to be extremely helpful and informative. Thank you!
I must admit, I found myself binge watching videos from your channel off and on for the last day and a half. Just randomly selected videos because you are not only articulate but seem like a fun person with a great group of pals. I have enjoyed watching your videos and thought I would tell you.
Have a fantastic day!
Thanks very much Jen! Glad this video helped you out. And thanks for watching some of my other videos, I really appreciate it! I hope to see you around more often in the comments!
jaykay18 You bet. I'm sure you'll see me around. It's going to take me a while to peruse your channel and I'm not shy about commenting, if I have something relevant, positive or comical to say that is. 'Til next time, take care.
OK, thanks so much!
Thanks!!! I save my washing machine, God bless you
Glad it helped!
I had do do the exact same repair on a unit with the dispenser and oddly enough the screw came out while the agitator stayed. This also demonstrates the relation between AC and DC but mechanically.
Yes, that's true, it does.
Great idea on the paper towel to hold the bolt into the socket! :-)
Thanks, my dad taught me that one years ago!
Great video Jay! You should do a PSA video on why you should get an HE washer.
More like why NOT to get an HE washer.
You should do a PSA video on why you should not get an HE washer. That's what I meant
I just wanted to say thank you for loading the video on how to change the agitator dogs, although I am a single working mom of two when my washer went out and I found your video you made it very clear instruction on what where and how to replace the agitator dog, LOL never thought of them being called that but her it is a work ILL never forget. So thank you very much, for taking the time to create this video. You saved me a whole bunch of money and I have to say it was very empowering to fix my own washer, Thank you again!!!!!
Yes, a not-often-used meaning of the word "dog" is a device used for holding other things. They're on a sewing machine under the presser foot--the feed dogs. You're quite welcome. I know full well how empowering it is to fix things, it's all I ever do. Enjoy!

Another vintage whirlpool washer saved from the perils of destruction
Yes indeedy!
Thank you for putting this on here. I just saved myself a ton of money on either a repairman or a new washer. Of course, I had to order the parts because Home Depot doesn't sell them anymore, but they were still only $5. Score!
You're welcome Heather! Keep this machine going forever, you'll never be able to buy another one like it. Great job!
"Gotta conserve, hun."
And we did! Conserved a lot of cash!
Yes we did!
this machine is the lower end model of my neighbor's Whirlpool Gold machine I have a bunch of videos on, its a great machine. Hopefully this one's owners stop abusing it lel
Yeah, but no. Old habits die hard.
That is such an easy repair. And those agitator dogs are very cheap on Amazon. Hell I bought a set if 48 of them for less than 8 bucks. I do not want my direct drive replaced with one of those crappy HE top loaders. Those HE top loaders are junk!
All HE washers are junk. I'd be afraid the nylon plastic would dry out by the time you'd need to use your third or 4th set. I buy them as I need them, once every 8 years or so.
jaykay18 Yeah that’s a good point. I will seal em in a ziplock and maybe that will help em last.
Btw I just did the repair and now my washer is a beast again!
Nice to hear. Better than a Ziplock would be a vacuum-sealed bag, kept out of light. That would be about the best protection that could be afforded.
THANK YOU!!! Thought we needed a new machine, but this worked & you made it easy to see how to put it back together!
No problem at all! Keep that machine at any and all cost, you cannot buy another one that washes anywhere near as well!
Overloading your washer with clothes.....
.....typically breaks the motor coupler, not the agitator dogs! Try again!
I took my machine apart as you did, found my dogs still intact but not inserted in it's place.
Now re-installing it as you.... 7:16 when I do this all the dogs fall out.
Also when I place this 5:55 pice back nothing locks in in place it just sits there unsecured, so when go to place in back as in 7:16
all the dogs fall out,
Am I missing something here?
I've done this job quite a few times. Occasionally, I have an off day, and the same thing happens. Last time I seriously started to doubt myself as a human being because it took me about 7 or 8 tries to get it right.
You may have to invert one piece or the other. Try turning the top part of the agitator upside down with your hand inside and holding that piece in place to prevent the dogs from falling out. Then turn the bottom part upside down and insert it into the top piece that you're still holding the dogs in place, and seat those clips. Then it'll all go back together.
Same problem here now!
Keep trying! If you still can't get it, put it down and do something else for a half hour, then come back. Sometimes you just need to walk away from the problem for a bit.
Great tutorial! Thanks.
No problem Linda!
i just replaced the dogs on my kenmore and it is working. i have a whirlpool washer that has been in the garage for over six years. replaced the dogs but n0 sinning. also, the motor and the pump appear to be working but the wash , rinse cycle do not work, and all the spin cycle does is empty the water i poured into the tub. any advise or where i can make myself smarter.
Very simple, probably a bad motor coupler. In fact, I have a video on that you can see here:
ua-cam.com/video/3bYJiN3Z3Sc/v-deo.html
Thank you
@@williamlcoco7867 You're welcome. It's a simple and inexpensive repair.
The bottom part won’t move, how can I fix that?
The whole rest of the machine moves the bottom, you'll have to be a lot more specific than that for me to help you.
I had a Kenmore washer and the agitator dogs were broken like that.
It's a fairly common problem and usually one of the only parts that wear out on these machines.
Very helpful. Thank you sir.
You're welcome.
Do you Lubricant the dog ears
If that were necessary, I would have shown it.
Good details, thanks. I was afraid that I place dog ears the wrong way until I verified with this video. Free turning clockwise and locks the other way.
Yep, you got it!
Wathced several other videos supposedly specifically for my washer. They had critical flaws. This one was perfect, what a great guy. Very clear, exact, perfect in every way.
Thanks very much for the kind words! I really appreciate that!
I did this repair today. UA-cam helped me diagnose the problem and find a solution. I ordered parts from Amazon at $20.00. The repair took about minutes and I saved a $100 service call.
Great to hear, thanks for watching.
Mr. jaykay your how to video is very helpful. My wife and I looked at few other videos concerning these agitator dogs. They were helpful, too, but you added the installation of the top agitator to the bottom and lining up the tabs. The other videos didn't include that step. That was very helpful, thanks.
You are welcome!
Excellent! Thanks
You're welcome.
My Whirlpool washer is now working great. Thanks for the video.( my machine had nothing but dirt and pebbles.....no dogs what so ever)
Excellent! Great work Diane!
Just did this repair on a 1990s Whirlpool, and I feel like I have discovered a national treasure! It's going like gangbusters in a tub of hot water! Amazing!
Beautiful job Margaret! And you're absolutely right--it is like gangbusters! NEVER get rid of your machine, you'll never get anything that works as well!
Awesome video and also how long has this washer been around
Thanks! I believe it was purchased in 1995, so at the time of this writing, it's 21 years old!
Man that washer has still got it. Plus are you gonna do other videos of your replacing things on that washer and is that your washer?
Mr. Mitch Infinit I did a video showing how to replace the motor coupler on it. It's my mother-in-law's washer.
Oh ok and can I get a link to that video please?
Mr. Mitch Infinit There are 3 videos actually:

I fixed my washer tonight. It works fine again. I have an extra part left that I don't know where it went, but it works!
Glad to hear this helped! The extra piece is probably the retainer ring for the agitator dogs, some had them, some didn't. One of my machines doesn't have it, and it works fine.
Is there supposed to be water inside of the chamber where the screw comes out? I don't know why I doubted myself and I opened the cap and noticed there was some water in there after I put the new agitator dogs.
If you're talking about the 7/16" bolt that holds the agitator in the machine, no, there shouldn't be water in there. Likely the reason that occurred is it didn't make a good seal. Made sure the black rubber seal around the cap has no cracks in it, then reseat it. It's NOT easy to get it seated in there. If it's crooked or not fully seated, water can get in.
Must the agitator be removed & seperated or can the housing of the agitator dogs just be lifted up & off of it?
The way it's shown is the way it's done.
Helped me do this by myself, proud of myself for getting it done without a man lol....
I'm happy to hear you fixed it with help from my video!
Thank you so much for the excellent tutorial! I just used your video to replace the agitator dogs on my Whirlpool model LSR6332KQ0 type 111 machine. Worked like a charm!
You're very welcome Ashley! Glad this helped you out!
same washer i got and thanks a lot was able to clean it and it function wonderful.
Sure thing!
Another 60's year-old woman fixed it! Thank you!
You're quite welcome! Good for you!
You're my hero. Is there any chance you can do a video on parts of the washer that should be cleaned to maintain it?
Quite honestly, the machine pretty much takes care of itself! There's nothing to really do. I pop off the fabric softener dispenser every once in a while, scrape the residue off with my fingernails, then run it through the dishwasher every now and again by itself. The rest can be wiped down with a rag and whatever cleaner you'd like to use. Nothing else needs to be done. You can run that "Tide Washing Machine Cleaner" every once and again if you'd like, but that's really it.
Glad this video helped you out! Keep this washer for life, you'll need it; they don't make anything good today!
What if I cross threaded my bolt on and it won't come out
That wasn't part of the instructions ;-)
Well if it's really stuck on there it's time to get out the "big guns". So you'll need 2 people and a breaker/cheater bar. The object is of course to try to get the bolt out without shearing it. One person holds the agitator at the bottom and the other turns the wrench.
If you do shear it, or cannot remove it with the breaker bar, the next step would be to drill it out. You'll also want a tap-and-die set to rethread properly. You may have buggered the threads in the machine, so you may have to drill it slightly oversized and then tap the new hole.
Thanks so much! It really helped. 👍
No problem at all!
But unfortunately when this happens most people will just forgo the $10 part and just buy a crappy modern HE washer.
Right, because it works _SO_ much better...
The best I have seen it. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
B- b- but its expensive likeeee omg 100 kertrillion dollars to fix get an HE machine its so good and gentle and cheap!!!!
You'll see how cheap that is when the HE machine breaks a minute into its first cycle.
That's if it even works the first minute in, don't be surprised if it's broken out of the box.
A lot of times it comes out of the box pre-scratched from China to you!
A lot of the time, it comes out pre-exploded in a million pieces.
Made In Chi-merica™.
Designed in Amelica, exproded in China for you!
Instructions not clear, machine is now on the ceiling.
Better than having your agitator dogs stuck in the toaster.
How about the transmission ending up in the fridge because that also happened somehow.
I think if you play the video backwards everything will right itself again.
I did it! Thank you so much!
Excellent! Glad this helped you out!
OMG I am SO FAR BEHIND
New video every day!
jaykay18 Yeah but SO much has happened with me these past two weeks... ugh. LOL
I wonder what "The Hard Way" would of been. Those old dogs look like old teeth.
Yeah they were _shot_..
