    5:13 this might look weird in some countries, but in Vilnius all the water comes from wells bellow ground. When many countries gets their water from rivers and dams and then filter it, water from deep bellow in Lithuania is free not only for drinking but also for fire extinguishers.

      It was absolutely brilliant, but something we'd never seen before... and I saw a few other people stop and stare at that system of running a pipe directly from the hydrant!

    Hello guys. Amazing video, just had to add my ten cents and tell that most of the produce you bought from LIDL isn't actually Lithuanian. Especially the beer. It is probably the worst brand of beer you can get in bigger supermarkets. If you plan on tasting proper Lithuanian beer I would recommend Varniukai, Daujotu or anything from Northern Lithuania really. Anyways, keep up the good work and I'm glad you liked our little country :)

Beetroot soup is equally nice when the weather cools down, so easy to make too. If I'm honest not a big fan of gazpacho, maybe the one I initially tried perhaps wasn't up to scratch or just prefer a warming soup.

    ...a wonderful city, the capital of Lithuania forever .
    There was on the main square Monument to Grand Duke Gediminas.
    Gediminas was Grand Duke - King of Lithuania from 1315 or 1316[1][2] until his death. He is credited with founding this political entity and expanding its territory which later spanned the area ranging from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.[3][4] Also seen as one of the most significant individuals in early Lithuanian history, he was responsible for both building Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, and establishing a dynasty that later came to rule other European countries such as Poland, Hungary and Bohemia.

    Well form what I understand Lithuania as a whole is as close to Poland in their conservativism. Vilnius is as a capital is naturally more cosmopolitan. I've found that people here in general want nothing to do with political correctness and other aspects of that. Their country, their right I say.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  4 роки тому +6

      We saw a number of gay and same sex couples in Vilnius, and people seemed to be far more relaxed in their style of dress and hair than in Warsaw. The atmosphere in Vilnius seemed more laidback and easygoing than anything I noticed in Warsaw, Krakow or even student-oriented Wrocław.

      @@FrugalTravellers Well in general people don't care about your personal choices. They live and let live. The opposition comes when these ideas start to be propagated en mass by the media or more frequently by an NGO. That then is promptly shut down by public opinion. And the comments, oh the comments are savage. These are my observations of 4+ years now. I would say that the denial of political correctness and all that is associated with it is a central and eastern European thing in general. My opinion is that having a more conservative and homogeneous society is good, compared to all the other places in the west where they are literally on fire right now.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  4 роки тому +1

      @Simon Peterson I am from New Zealand, a multicultural and definitely not homogeneous country, and we are not on fire. Rather, people have the freedom and space to be themselves, rather than have to hide their relationships or gender identities from others for fear of intimidation or being singled out for being different. I know which society I would rather live in.

      @@FrugalTravellers Yes.. interesting that. I'm guessing you are aware of #metoo? Are you also aware of the US crime statistics(I'm giving the us as an example for obvious reasons)? How about the defilement of British girls by a specifically non European ethnicity? Burning of Churches on mass in France? How about the natural balkanisation of multicultural societies world wide? The terror wave in Europe after the 2015 crisis? I could go on but it would be redundant at this point. Form looking at the media it seems that the only ones that are single out are white people. You have to be blind not to see it. In any case the fact remains that all multicultural societies have these urgent problems, some more than others, it all depends on the level of "diversity" while homogenous societies don't. In New Zealand i couldn't even have this discussion. I would be cancelled, called the worst names imaginable. While here i can talk about these issues. So tell me which is the more free society?

      I believe in tolerance for all people, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, skin colour, and age. I also believe that there is no point in arguing when neither side has the ability to change the other person's mind. To that end, I will no longer participate in this conversation, as have videos to make...

      Haha... It was our first day so we just bought the cheapest going in Lidl. We went on to try many great Lithuanian beers including švyturys, kalnapilis and Utenos which we feature in some of our other Lithuania videos. The beer selection in Lithuania is incredible. We loved so many. Just a shame about the 8pm supermarket alcohol sale curfew. That caught us out a few times!

      I know... we've been told that by a few Lithuanian viewers now! 🤣 We didn't realise it was a Lidl brand, and I have to say that some of them weren't too bad! If you watch our other Vilnius videos, we do try a few other beers... including one with possibly the coolest label yet!

    This is what Vilnius looks like, because it's a Polish city, just like Lviv in Ukraine. Stalin established new frontiers in 1945. Just go to the cemetery in Rasos. It's not borscht. This is Lithuanian cold soup(chłodnik Litewski). It's a very popular soup in Poland and Lithuania. This soup has many varieties. I recommend you zeppelins. These are large potato dumplings stuffed with meat. Very popular in Lithuania and Poland.

      We have been to the cemetery in Antakalnis. Many Polish soldiers graves there.

      We tried the cepelini (zeppelins) as well. Very heavy and filling food! A good winter dish I think whereas the soup is a great summer dish.

      Vilnius was Polish city only for 19 years, Vilnius isn't Polish city ;) It's our capital from middle ages.

      @@spelltairen3509 You say so because you are Samogitian! My ancestors also lie in the cemetery in Rasos. We built this city in the style of the Vistula Baroque and Polish Classicism. Please don't be. You were given Vilnius by Stalin. how many were liberated from German occupation by the Home Army. And you Samogitians collaborated with Hitler !!!!
