Have you ever been to Lithuania? What are your first impressions of Vilnius so far?
brb moving to Vilnius
Its similar to Latvia, If you want to see soviet stuff you need to go outside from the capital
Lithuania was the only place I felt uncomfortable.
People were cold like the weather, the scenery bleak and a bit depressing.
But I guess it's different in summer and the giving me a cold shoulder was due to me speaking Russian first.
@@garyweaver5512 I hope, "put in" pay well in those dirty rubles? Otherwise is not worth, writing some nonsense.
@@valdasnetavo8746 yeah, anyone who wasn't impressed with Vilnius and Lithuania, gets paid by Russia-)))
What a dumb comment.
I'm 30years old. As Bald said - we can not miss Soviet past. Because our grand parents were suffering, our parents were fighting for independence and we have to cherish what they have built for us. It was worst years of Lithuania's history, stopped development which Lithuania had since early 20th century, killed ~30% of people, mostly intellectual, rich people, created shady schemes (bribes, corruption, etc.) and we are still fighting with all these leftovers.
And not only that, balts (Latvians and Lithuanians) are not slavs, they have totally different culture, language, history, etc.
And nobody reacts to word Soviet as a trigger, but everyone wants aknowledgment of differences and that it was dark past against people's will.
For sure. Besides how`s it possible soviet themed restaurant? Restaurants need food...

Secound part of the question is plain stupid. Africans can afford to have 4 children while germans cant even afford 2. Does this makes Africa richer than Germany?
I just dunno. Whenever I see Johnny with Bald, Johnny looks like a happy tourist with some great skills, but Bald looks like an off-duty badass operative. I just hope he's working for us.
Well put
Johnny is stupid about Soviet history which is a nightmare haunted people there for half century. Why people want remember. 😡
@@williamboss746 In Lithuania, yes. Have you ever seen Ben interview boomers/older people in other ex-Soviet countries? Most of them seem to miss it.

I've been in Vilnius once many years ago and it's a lovely city.
Random Bald & Bankrupt fans in the street probably assuming Johnny is just his cameraman!
Lithuanians look somewhat different than their Slavic neighbours too. Well, their men especially, they're taller and a bit more Scandi-looking than the average East-Slav. The Lithuanian stock is very old, maybe the oldest in Europe.
I wouldn't say that, that first 'tall guy' looks pretty Slavic to me, and his accent was very Russian as well. BTW, I've heard that Balts and Slavs are similar in terms of genetics.
@@tornadoman1054 cuz Vilnius is full of Polaks and soviets under different name aka Russians
Our language is at least as old as Sanskrit - maybe older, it's very involved - intricate. I have a huge dictionary.
Жамойт пытается вылизать свою страну на английском , это так смешно , по твоему беларусы которые живут в паре километром от эстонии будут ниже ? Генетика одинаковая , балто-славяне ничем не отличаются кроме языковых подгрупп
Thats true.
The architecture in Vilnius is absolutely beautiful!! It has such a European cosmopolitan look and seems like a very clean city!

FYI Lithuania was occupied under Soviets only between 1944-1991. But the history of this country goes all the way back to 1200s. Therefore it has more European style buildings than Soviet.
Plus they were the first country to leave ussr I doubt they were ever Soviet
So who built those buildings ?
@@peterkonitzer4410 Mostly of them build by Lithuanians, there a many buildings even from 12 - 13 century. Hi John! I do like your show. Well done you 😃. Just one thing about soviet past! I was born in Vilnius 51 years ago and only thing we were all dreaming about was to get back our independence 😃. There is no regret and kind of nostalgia.. You obviously haven’t been gone through all this soviet crap… different mentality and I don’t blame you for that 😃. Apart of that I like your show! Thanks buddy 👍
Vilnius looks great. Architecture is definitely very European, in fact it reminds me of our medieval cities here in Belgium (Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Namur...), but with a definite eastern flavour to it. I'm impressed, definitely looks worth a visit.
Vilnius is the mix of local Lithuanian and Polish, German, Jewish, Russian and I guess other European architectural influences of various styles who come from different centuries.
Summer is the best time to visit!
I got a very Budapest vibe from the architecture. it's certainly very pretty.
@@Deines7 Before WW1 there were less than 2% Lithuanians in Vilnius. The only lithuanian impact on this city architecture is contemporary (so it's international actually, there's no "lithuanian style" in architecture). Unless you include help in devastating churches in the '50s, that may also bee seen as lithuanian input.
@@rafaz.695 Before of the mid of 16th century here was near zero poolish immigrants or locals who switch the language from lithuanian to poolish.
The pasties you were eating are called kibinas. It's a traditional dish of the Karaim peoples who have been living in Lithuania's Trakai region since the middle ages. If you ever visit Trakai (a worthwhile destination, though nothing Soviet for Bald there), try some kibins there, they're something else entirely over there.
And then Karaims were eradicated because they used to practice Judaism, right? Now most kibinai places offer pork as a filling and that’s ok.
@@eyeeyeoh I don't know about that. Wasn't able to find anything too specific online, but it seems that the nazis distinguished Karaims from Jews and didn't apply the same policies to them. A 1897 census says that there were 424 Karaims living in Trakai. 2001 census says there were 273. So while the population decreased over a century, it doesn't seem like they were eradicated.
The hell are you talking about?
18:00 regarding what u were talking about here: I highly doubt that as lithuania has a rich proud history since way before the soviet takeover, and that is their national identity i would guess. They removed all the soviet stuff not because they "didnt wanna think about it" simply because it isnt them, it was forced upon them. Now i may be wrong about this but this is my take on it.
Yes, your take on this is quite precise. As a Lithuanian myself I can tell that Lithuania is proud of its long lasting and rich history which has been built through the ages and those 50 years of the soviet time are remembered as a nightmare. Those bloody communist came here, deported the upper class to gulags and started to enslave our peasants. How they think we should remember those times with nostalgia?
They removed all the soviet stuff because they aren't a huge fans of war crimes
Couldnt been said better!

Russia was the oppressor, who wants to keep souvenirs of the oppressor?
I’m from Ukraine and love Lithuania. I’ve been to Vilnius and Kaunas, and what a lovely cities!!! I felt so nice and calm there, people were nice and friendly. Really waiting to visit again.
Bald has feeling why most Lithuanian hate soviet era when you great grandfathers was sent to gulag and your grandparents deported to Siberia, there is just impossible to like or feel nostalgia for it.

After we adopted Euro prices doubled, but salaries tripled or even quadrupled in some places. Johnny, you and Bald have been so motivating for me! This year has been one of the hardest years for me, I just want to thank you for all of your hard work! I can't wait to visit Lithuania!!
Also, would love to replicate on Johnys last words. We do not want to delete our history, we wish it woul'nt have happened. It is still very painfull to a lot of Lithianians, since there are still a lot of people that lost their loved ones or grandparents to the regime. Some of our parents or grandparents came back from the Siberia. The history is still alive. Of course there's always people that glamorize those times, but mostly we educate our youth on it . Constant discussions , art projects, exibitions created on it, so we would know. But it is not supose to be part of our identity, it was forced on us. :)
Agreed, that last sentence is just what I was going to say - not our history, therefore we don't have to preserve any of it. We're not deleting our history, in fact we're promoting and reviving it. "Destroying history" is one of the biggest pet peeves of mine. Two months prior to the removal of the monument to regime collaborator Cvirka (which made it into Bald's video), a new monument to Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius was unveiled, or what about that sculpture of Jonas Basanavičius from a few years ago. To do the opposite of what we have been doing since 1990 or even to have done nothing since then would be the real destruction of history, as we would end up having all of the same copy-pasted, inorganically imposed revolutionaries, heroes, holidays, national myths and narratives as 14 other faraway and sometimes culturally foreign countries. Now THAT would be destruction of OUR history.
that is CORRECT......My birth name is Rasa Sofija Jakstaite
I'm Buryaad Mongolian from Siberia. And we still have many baltic people living here. Sadly they assimilate and have only last name as a reminder.
But we are outright deleting or hiding all details of Soviet period. Even physical architecture stuffers. We demolish what we don't like the same way as they did, we are no better in this area.
All history is still history no matter if it was forced. Imagine If Austro Hungarian or other historical architecture was demolished at such scale in countries with complicated past.
00:02 you lucky bastards! I was born in this damn block and lived until bloody event of 1991 13th January. Was a clear view from kindergarten to passing soviet tanks and trucks with soldiers.
Those waitresses were actually really friendly and kinda flirting to both of you, like that style😎, as soon as Lithuania joined the EU, the prices rised rapidly, but I guess that will help the country to become more economically powerful. Nice vlog, greetings from Austria especially to the Lithuanian people✌️
It is always better to have high prices and big salaries than low prices and small salaries.
@@fidenemini111 the thing is that the average salaries in Lithuania are low and prices are high. The salaries are even one of the lowest in the whole Europe I'm pretty sure.

Lithuania is a morally outstanding and very brave country. It is the first country from the EU to recognize Taiwan and allow it to establish a "Taiwan Representative Office" in their capital, Vilnius. :)
Brave but stupid ;)
🇹🇼🇹🇼🇹🇼
@@silverplays871 sure we are very stupid :)
Lithuania can afford to do that because it can depend on the USA/EU for trade and it is very insignificant to China. At present 12-15 nations recognised Taiwan as a separate country. It doesn't mean anything to China(PRC) as long as Taiwan (ROC) itself did not declare as a separate country.
Technically we didn't recognize Taiwan as an independent country, but at least we let the office be named "Taiwan" rather than "Taipei", so it's still a step forward.

I completely disagree that Lithuanians are "covering up" the Soviet occupation and pretending it didn't happen. The Baltic countries take a staunch EU position precisely because they haven't forgotten what the Soviet Union did to them and fear what Putin could do in the future. Unlike the other Soviet republics, the Baltics had had a tradition of democracy prior to the Soviet tanks rolling into their countries. From Bald's reaction to your observations, he clearly disagrees too.
