I am 77 and spun out on black ice this morning for the first time in my life. Two lane road , nobody behind me, a car coming at me about a block and a half away. I had no previous knowledge of how to drive on black ice but when the car started to spin I did nothing - It spun one full circle plus a half circle which pointed me back to home and that is where I went. Your video was very informative - thank you

Rick, when you spun out, I’m glad no one was on the road driving towards you or you might have ended up in the hospital. I’m glad you are okay. When there is ice, drive slower. In some cases 20 or 30 mph slower than posted speed limit, if driving on interstate freeways or city highways. You know this and I do but many other drivers do not. They think their brakes will save them, they are wrong. They will be in the ditch or in the hospital just like everyone else if they relay only on brakes. Driving knowledge is what saves us, not brakes alone.
As a truck driver I thank you for this video, its quite informative. I avoid brakes in winter as much as possible, let traction and your weight slow you down before pressing those brakes, think ahead.

High traffic areas where cars are slowing down are often very good locations for ice, particularly if the humidity is high and temperatures are very low, like down around +10F or lower. These are conditions where there's a lot of water being emitted in vehicle exhaust and it immediately drops down to the road surface and freezes. In cold areas of the country you'll see this happening a lot at the approach to intersections and on congested parts of freeways that haven't been treated well with chemicals and sand yet.

How do you stop the vehicle if there is black ice on the road? I was approaching a stop light that suddenly turned red and was barely able to stop the vehicle in time
I know this is a year late. Tap your breaks or pump them. This prevents as much sliding and will stop your wheels and steering from locking up. Intersections though are some of the worst for slipping, if you know you can't make the stop slide through given other cars haven't started up... They shouldn't if they're smart. If you finally stop mid intersection you're a bigger danger since it'll be harder to start again and clear. Outside of all that look for cues that you'll need to stop prior and slow ahead of time.
Hi sir rick , how studded tire works? Is it safe on the road with only water and already snowplow on the road during winter? I live in nelson bc.. but i go to other places too. And is it legal to use studded winter tire anywhere in BC during winter time?
Yes and yes - in Nelson, I would recommend studded tires my friend. The studs will dig into the ice and provide maximum traction in the winter. If you travel outside British Columbia, you'd have to check the laws for those places. In British Columbia, you must have these off your car by 30 April. All the best, Cheers Rick
Rain, fog, ice and snow melting during the day and freezing overnight, or just a lot of humidity in the air my friend. Thank you for that clarification. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi buddy I was in an accident tonight I slid head on into my friends parked car it was scary I tried stoping and it made it worse good news is we are both ok and he’s not mad
I’ve got my road test in 2 days My question is will they ask me to “park up hill / downhill” and if they do your suppose to let your wheels hit the side , how do I do this with snow ? This is my second time going , I failed the first time due to speed
You're not supposed to hit the curb , you do have to park close enough to the curb and depending on uphill or downhill your wheel has to be turned a certain way do some googling
@@yeridania31 it says in the drivers book to let your front wheels make contact with the curb before setting parking break when parking up hill with a curb. My question is how do I do this with a pile of snow on the side of the roads. I’ve been googling, and reading the book over. They do not address this.
@@carrieanne5166 when I did my test and there was lets say a snow bank there you have to get as close to the snow bank as possible and most of the time they won't make you park downhill when there is snow
@@yeridania31 okay thank you , I just wasn’t sure because he did ask me the first time I took it but it was in November and there wasn’t snow , this time around I’m not so lucky having to take it in the winter time
Not completely true. Skidding FWD vehicle can be corrected by accelerating firmly when skidding has just occurred. It works for fwd only. Also if amplitude is too high and skidding becomes uncontrollable, you must use breaks when vehicle skids towards right curb - breaking will push you to the right shoulder (or in the ditch). It’s less dangerous than slipping into opposite traffic.
I’m not sure if I am afraid of walking and slipping on black ice or driving on black ice ? Both are awful pick your poison. Fortunately I haven’t had many falls walking and had more trouble driving in my 2002 Lexus Is300 with rear wheel drive and still using snow traction and winter ❄️ tires but if you are still in all season or summer tires your in deep trouble in cold weather climates.
You're an expert and you got caught driving too fast on an icy road? Hmmm, maybe not so expert? Just slow down. Use winter tires. You'll never need skid control (if that's even a thing, given how badly it would turn out if there was anyone else around) if you just slow down and drive for winter, not the speed limit. Black ice is also common after a thaw and then refreeze - it leaves ice along the right edge of the road. ABS applies braking equally, so no traction on right tires means none on left tires either. Good tires, slowing down, leaving space around cars, and making glacial changes is all you can do.
Hi Rick, I passed my road test. Thank you so much for all your videos.
