TEDxJaffa -- Daphna Joel -- Are brains male or female?

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 7 жов 2012
  • Professor Daphna Joel explores the mistaken concept that brains can be either male or female, thus providing an explanation for why men and women are different. She disputes the theory, displays the neurological data and proves that our brains are really a unique mosaic of male and female characteristics, forming an 'intersex brain.'
    Prof. Joel received her Ph.D. in psychology in Tel-Aviv University, and joined the faculty of TAU in 1998. Prof. Joel is presently the head of the Psychobiology graduate program at the School of Psychological Sciences, and a member of the Sagol School of Neuroscience.
    Prof. Joel's research interests focus on understanding the involvement of basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits in normal and abnormal behavior, using mainly animal models of psychopathology. More recently Prof. Joel has expanded her work to research questions related to brain, sex and gender, and in particular the complex interplay between sex and environment in the development of psychopathology.

      I'm a part of the Leipzig collaboration, I regret working with Joel as she is GC and does not believe trans people.
      There is a fine line between claiming gender is nonsense and accepting all genders.
      She's also know for instrumentalising trans participants or collaborators at Tel Aviv U. Most recently she published "what is a woman" in "the journal of controversial ideas" a eugenics-promoting journal with articles about post-birth aborting crip/disabl(ed) people for any reason. Shes living her own "leaving the left" narrative at the moment. Literally nobody will work with her.

    She made the argument that brains are intergendered... but she completely fails to take logical reasoning into account when making that argument.
    If a brain was intersexual, it would mean that the amount of dendrites would either increase or decrease due to stress REGARDLESS of the gender of the subject the brain matter was taken from...
    HOWEVER...
    The reaction of the dendrites to stress was demonstrated to be very CLEARLY DIFFERENT due to gender... in point of fact, INVERSELY different. In males, the dendrites increase, whereas in females, the dendrites decrease.
    This shows a very CLEAR and CAUSAL difference between gender, and the effects of stress on the brain... whereas her argument was to say that brains aren't gendered... that they are interchangeable.
    She just proved her case completely false.
    Way to go Tedx. Once again you bamboozle the crowd into thinking completely crackpot things are true, even when the evidence you present refutes everything you are saying.

    Interesting talk! Those sex "thinking abilities" differences attributed to morphological brain differences always seem ridiculous: It is clear that a person is much more similar in his way of thinking to his parents (regardless their sex) than to that of any other person of the same sex chosen randomly . That means that the statistical differences related to a gender are negligible. If environmental influences further affect the morphology then all this comparisons really seem meaningless.

    The fact that the dendrites are never in the same state in each environment would suggest the complete opposite of what she's claiming. She hasn't really explained the significance of the spines in terms of behaviour, but assuming they are and hence making her point relevant, you would expect different behaviour from either sex in a particular environment. She's provided a very subjective take on things, can't help but feel it panders to the feminist agenda.

    At 14:47 Professor Daphna Joel states "We now know hundreds of differences between the brains of men and women." So differences exist. If an outside stimulus causes a male brain to behave more like a female brain that is not experiencing that stimulus (as in the example given), the difference in response to the stimulus is another difference between male and female.

    It is mind boggling how she can use the data she presented as an argument against brain differences in sex. If anything, the data clearly reinforces sexual dimorphism of the brain as the male and female dendrites have *inverse* responses to stress by these tests. Yes, this means they are performing in opposition to one another under stressful conditions. How is another physiological difference observed in any way an argument against these very differences O_o?

    • @MadScientus
      @MadScientus 9 років тому +15

      lesmizzle Because at around 11:57 she seems to imply that the mother's stress actually reshapes the brain during fetal brain development which means people end up with "intersexed brains." I think she means to say a 100% male or female brain is so unlikely that it is never observed, and they are only theoretical concepts. I suppose the mother would never have to experience any stress during pregnancy for that to occur. Then, I think she is further positing that it is silly to refer to the brain in such a simplistic manner of male or female because that which was associated with being male and female (testosterone or lack thereof) is only one of many factors that influence the brain. Since the brain's uniqueness is determined by a lot more than just sex hormones it does not make sense to classify it solely based on that. Further, I'd be willing to bet that this is just the tip of the iceberg in variables that influence brain development. Sex hormones are easy pickings.

    • @lesmizzle
      @lesmizzle 9 років тому +8

      "Since the brain's uniqueness is determined by a lot more than just sex hormones it does not make sense to classify it solely based on that."
      Last I checked, male and female were not the only terms available to describe brains, and I've never heard anyone argue that they are.
      The basic truth: Males and females as groups *on average* exhibit differences in brain structure and hormonal function which are significant enough to be meaningful in how the brain is studied and understood.
      If someone says "the male brain" or "the female brain" it has meaning because you can conjure the average differences to which they are referring.
      Attempts to prove that there are no differences at this point are fallacious and embarrassing. Male and female brains are *similar* but not the *same*. Big difference in that distinction.

    I'm not a neuro-scientist or anything, but a few points on the logic of this and some things i thought I'd point out.
    1. Has there been any studies to show that those specific aspects of the brain that 'change sex' are just normally/naturally responsive to stress?
    2. Of course no one has a wholly male brain or wholly female brain, just like not everyone is wholly male or female (females and males both have differing levels on testosterone and estrogen is one example). But we label someone as male or female, or, in this case, label brains as male and female based on many characteristics as a whole. We don't focus on just the size of the brain (now at least) to determine whether it's male or female, but every part of the brain as a whole.
    Just something to think about.

      What? Male and Female are THE two sexes, thus anatomical and psychological differences are inherent. Our innate differences is what gave rise to how we perceive the identities of the sexes, and stereotypical societal roles. These weren't initiated one day and somehow managed to stick ever since. Identity, role in society, and most other stereotypes pertaining to the sexes are the reasonable results of our biology.

    She says there's no male and female brains, but there are male and female characteristics, and she doesn't define what those are. If the stressed female neuron is similar to a non-stressed male neuron - which one of the two characteristic (many / few dendrites) is male and which female? No there's no binary male and female brains, but there is a biphasic sexual dimorphism of the brain with a wide overlap.

      Personally I believe she’s right. Without gender roles and societal programming people would partake in characteristics that are stereotypically male/female in our society. Male and female brains don’t exist because we all have both innately until society impacts our way of thinking which happens every day.

  • @thatsweetlilthing2

    I disagree with her statements because it doesn't take into account the resting state of the brain without influences. Of course the brain will change characteristics based on influences in the environment and genetics (neuroplasticity), but that doesn't attempt to evaluate why the brain comes to those changes or how those changes affect future development, or measure for how long these changes last.

      That personality study didn't seem to have any neuroscience in it at all -- it looks like what they did was a statistical analysis of a detailed personality survey. All that a study like that can tell you is that adult men and women tend to respond differently to survey questions of this kind. In principle, sex differences in personality survey answers could be completely due to differences in socialization (e.g. if men are indoctrinated to behave a certain way, or at the very least to give a certain kind of answer on a survey when questioned about it).

      You are right, she has a long and impressive publication list in neuroscience. However, most of these publications are not related to the lecture above. Not so many of her papers are about sex and gender identity and they were published in the last 1-2 years. As I understand, she argues that brains/behavior of men and women very rarely possess all of "man-attributes" or "woman-attributes". I think, it's not a very original idea, of course, people are very different and can have attributes which are thought to be "manly" or "womanly". Beyond that the choice of "manly" and "womanly" attributes can be a very subjective decision (e.g., one can only be very masculine, if he plays golf and watches porn???), other methodological problems of these studies (e.g. statistical "tricks") were discussed in the following article:

    As a Neuropsychologist I can say that she is looking for information correctly but she is wrong in the conclusion, of course there are differences between the brain of women and men, just as there are differences between the body of men and women, and it is true that neurotransmitters can change certain aspects of the body but (and here comes where she is wrong) this does not change the origin, for example in a broader and simpler way so that all can understand, if a woman due to a specific situation increases her testosterone in her body, we do not say "oh she has a man's body now" because it is only certain aspects that change, her woman's body is not only defined by testosterone, using this example, it's like a little monkey said some words correctly and the doctor said, "oh here's a human, here is a mosaic between monkey and human." (again I am trying to explain this in a very simple and coarse way). So of course, although some microbasic aspects change with the environment, such as stress, it does not mean that now the organ has changed to be male, for example, I hope she continues researching and studying because she has potential but she definitely have to continue studying😉

      As a neuropsychologist, you should probably do more to wrap your head around the fact that averages are the least interesting measures in comparative studies, they are simply a layperson's Index and they do a poor job at that.
      All that said, Daphna Joel hates trans people, her whole thing is that gender does not exist. I.e. she is gender critical and follows kathleen stock.

    This is one way of seeing things. There are obvious differences in behavior that are related to hormones and genetics that affect our in vitro life. I think the matter is what concepts, what WORDS we are using to talk about this. There are no FEMALE brains or MALE brains when we refer to the actual organ. Both male and female brains look the same and the differences in size and volume are not THAT relevant. But when we consider behavior, likes, preferences, studies show there is a difference between boys and girls that have not yet been influenced by the environment. I would consider this point of view as it is. Another way of thinking about a complex subject. Nothing is conclusive and I am sure we will spend years trying to know THE TRUTH. I still agree with Daphna's idea of being yourself and embrace the way you are leaving aside the standards by which some people raise their kids just because you are a boy or a girl. Interesting talk.

    If that's the case doesn't this invalidate research into how people are gay or trans?
    Does stress change the shape of the brain permanently? So this doesn't seem to really disprove sex differences in the brain. It seems to say that our brains are more similar under stress. This is a bit dubious.
    Of course there isn't a strict 100% male or female brain. No one of any group is ever really the same. Aren't "female" and "male" just general terms to refer to certain general patterns? Like females brains are more female than male brains, even her little graphic depicted that.
    This doesn't disprove a (general) male or female brain, just a pure one.

    • @bbasi1
      @bbasi1 10 років тому +1

      That's what i just thought, about gays and trans people... if the brain its a mixture of the 2 sexes (as she said), then the theory of homossexual people its invalid..! The theory of homossexual is basically this: their sex is determined during the pregnancy in their brains, but it occurs an error in physical determination. In other words, the sex established in the brain will not coincide with the physical appearance. Which means that homossexual its not a genetic error, but an individuals choice (as she said, we are born with a mixture of 2 types of brain, male and female, it behooves us to choose which side we want to turn ...) And this changes a lot of things!!

    • @sailornaruto39
      @sailornaruto39 10 років тому

And our species is more negative than positive (not sure if G-d or the universe intended it this way) but nice people suffer while defensive people succeed ..I think and gather that women their strength is higher then men mentally not enotionally but both and can alternate , males we can alternate also but the opposite happens we become unsuccessful ? ..its a Womens World ! It only appears that it's a mans brain because women let it happen not because either or is superior...I think religion unbalances brains also to the liking of the society and what's interesting in the wild or animals work the opposite !!! I don't 100% agree with this. I agree that there are masculine and feminine characteristics in the brain, that would explain why everyone has masculine and feminine traits but there are differences. You can't just erase the fact that there are differences in the brain. There are differences that do distinguish men and women, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. The differences in our brains do not determine a woman's or man's ability, that is just sexist thinking but differences do exist, which is why Gender is a thing. You have completely disregarded Transsexualism too.

    • @Garrett1240
      @Garrett1240 7 років тому +3

      That's because her underlying deposition is 100%, utterly false. Also, what does transsexualism have to do with anything? It's validity is highly contested and it's politicized even more so.

    • @boyghcst
      @boyghcst 7 років тому

      Garrett1240 ...because researching brain studies on transsexualism myself, there is neurological evidence to show that there are gender differences in the brain between men and women, when being looked at between trans and cis people's brains, structure and size for example. So the woman in this video saying that there are no differences is completely disregarding the research we have on transsexualism and what we have towards finding gender identity.

    • @Garrett1240
      @Garrett1240 7 років тому +1

      Caleb F What exactly do you mean by "transsexualism"? From what I have learned, 'transsexualism' as I understand you to mean it, is likely a mental illness emerging from hormonal imbalances in the womb. Of course I can't be confident of that, but many health organizations believe that to be the case, and there's others who do not. Is this not the case? Also define transsexualism.

    • @boyghcst
      @boyghcst 7 років тому +1

      Garrett1240 No, it's not a mental illness. That's an outdated "medical" definition and what bigots jump to use to defend their hate and lack of understanding.
      Transsexualism is the general medical term (usually used in studies) to describe a person who is Trans and has Gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is a condition in which a person's gender and sex do not match and leads to distress and discomfort because their body is different to that of their gender and how it *should* look.
      So why is it not a mental illness? ...because it is to do with gender and the way your brain is biologically structured. Gender is internal. For example, if someone suddenly told you that you had to be the opposite gender now, you would most likely be able to present and socialise typically of that gender but your internal sense of being (male or female, depending on your gender) would remain. This is because you are born with a gender that loosely connects with your sex, so should match but is not tied as they are different things. This is the case with trans people; we are born with a gender different to our sex. The example I gave you only touches on the social aspects but imagine it was your social identity and your physical body at odds with your gender.
      Furthermore, it is not a mental illness because there is simply nothing "ill" with their brain, it's that their gender is their gender and you can't change that. What *is* wrong is their body and the way it developed.
      It's similar to when people used to say (well some still say) that homosexuality is a mental disorder/illness and has to be cured but the fact is, is that there is nothing *to* cure, it's their sexuality and you can't change that.
      It's well known that the medical field is growing since the past and now recognises Gender dysphoria as a medical condition and not a mental illness.

    • @Garrett1240
      @Garrett1240 7 років тому +2

      Caleb F Nothing you said about gender dysphoria or transsexualism is 100% agreed upon among scientists. The DSM and others are all heavily politicized. You also didn't use any science to back your claims.

If there are statistical differences between the sexes, then to say both sexes have equivalent brains on a statistical scale is manifestly false. it just means male brains and female brains react to stress differently, it does not mean the old theory is wrong. for example:
    a man, while not stressed, can be unaware and unresponsive to the environment. but once stressed the man becomes focused on detecting danger in his environment.
    woman on the other hand are constantly aware to their environment and are looking for danger, but when stressed, woman panic and loose focus.
