    Short barreled shotguns were not included in the NFA because of any particular association with crime, that is a myth, the real reason they, along with short barreled rifles, were included was because the NFA was originally going to apply to pistols as well, as they were the weapon most associated with crime, it was thought that people would find a loophole around this by sawing off their shotgun or rifle to give it the same concealability as a pistol. At the last second, the NRA lobbied to have the regulation on pistols removed, but the part about short barreled rifles and shotguns was kept for some reason.

      Not a firearms expert here but a political science and nursing major (never put All your eggs in one basket especially when the classes ain't that expensive, University of Texas for the win)
      The reason is quite simple, the politicians of the time had already made too much noise about the new law, usually what would happen is that the law would have been quietly killed without people ever hearing about it, politics are at the end of the day just a Play, a game of popularity, so if nobody knows nobody cares, and if nobody cares you don't have voters going to your opponent or forcing you out of whatever office you might hold.
      the problem is the NRA took too long, too many politicians had demonized fire arms and had made their career around this law, it was way too public to simply kill it since a lot of people's careers wouldn't survive the backlash.
      So the law was nerfed tremendously, it no longer included handguns and it made it relatively easy to get the stamp to buy or modify a rifle into an SBR.
      Honestly politicians don't care about gun laws or gun violence, it's just another card to play, another sheath of music for the masses, We have A population of 300 million, do you honestly think they care about a couple thousand dead every year? No it doesn't even show up in the freaking death stats, like we're talking about something like 7 or 10 out of 100,000 people, That is such an infinitely small percentage as to be considered a rounding error and yet the gun debate takes up around 50% of screen time in politics.
      It's literally the definition of a free point, it's a useless, insignificant debate point that affects such a tiny percentage of people that win or lose it doesn't matter, And that's why it's so popular because it doesn't matter but everyone will gladly pick a side and spend All of their time arguing about it and ignore arguments that actually affect people, like The absolutely disastrous state of healthcare in the US, or the ensuing Housing crisis, or even the ever growing cost of higher education and the ever decreasing value of a college diploma.

    They were the go-to weapons for bank robbers and hardcore thugs here in the UK, in the post war decades.
    You dont really see them used anymore but in 70s they were ubiquitous. A famous career criminal MacVicar used one in post officer robberies. Famously he would usually walk in, announce it was a robbery, and then shoot someone at random. He was in and out before anyone realised that he would load the cartridges with a reduced powder load and rocksalt. Im sure it wasnt very pleasant but at least nobody sustained permanent injury.

    • @dark2023-1lovesoni
      @dark2023-1lovesoni Рік тому +39

      There's no choke, but the pattern isn't any wider than it is out of an 18-26" barrel without choke (aka: cylinder bore).
      I have tested this quite extensively. It's a total myth. I can easily shoot skeet just fine with my sawn off.
      The same is even true with rifles. Short barrels are just as accurate but have a bit less maximum range. Technically, 10-12" rifle barrels experience less variance/drift, have better harmonics, and less "barrel whip" than a 16-20" barrel does.

    • @warrenpuckett4203
      @warrenpuckett4203 Рік тому +4

      @@dark2023-1lovesoni It also can spread depending how the end is cut. The last 4 inches(or4 lengths of the projo) of a rifle matters more than what was before that 4 inches.

    • @dark2023-1lovesoni
      @dark2023-1lovesoni Рік тому +17

      Well, yeah, if the barrel isn't properly crowned, it can damage accuracy. Just cutting a barrel with a hacksaw is unlikely to be a straight or clean cut. However, if you REALLY want to increase the spread significantly use a rifled barrel or rifled choke. These are commonly meant to be used with non-rifled slugs but they will force the shotcup to spin and produce a wildly large spread. The only issue is that it's a bit random. The spread might be off to the right on one shot and then to the left on the next. All of the .410 revolvers have rifled barrels and therefore present similar randomized wide spread patterning with standard shot loads.

    There are some sawed off shotguns that don't necessarily have to be NFA
    There's some loopholes in the NFA where they call certain guns quote firearms
    Things like the Mossberg shockwave and Henry 410 axe come with short barrels from the factory and basically considered pistols under the law
    However if I took a regular shotgun and sawed it off myself that would be a felony because apparently you cannot take a rifle or a shotgun and configure it into a pistol under the 1934 NFA

    • @dark2023-1lovesoni
      @dark2023-1lovesoni Рік тому +16

      Technically, any gun that fires a shotshell but has never had a stock (from the factory) and is at least 26" total length isn't considered a pistol, shotgun, or rifle. It's legally just a "firearm" (which has no barrel length requirement). To legally be a shotgun or rifle it must be fireable from the shoulder, meaning it has a stock. Technically, smoothbore pistols are also NFA items, that's why the Tarus Judge and all .410 revolvers have rifled barrels.
      Lastly, you CAN legally cut any shotgun or rifle down to any length you like. You just have to register it under the NFA as an SBR/SBS first (Short Barrel Rifle/Shotgun).
      This is done using an ATF Form 1 and only cost $200. Lastly, they generally approve these requests in under 45 days.

    It all started with the blunderbuss. Usually they had larger than a 12 gauge bore and they were almost always filled with several buck shot or any type of metal chunks they had lying around. Over 70 caliber blunderbuss were very common in the 1700's and even the 1600's. Some were even 100 caliber, 12 gauge are only .729 caliber.

    • @RequisiteFunction
      @RequisiteFunction 5 місяців тому +3

      Yes but it's a myth that they'd be stuffed with nails or scrap metal.
      Most of them had brass barrels. It would be sadistic to load it with anything harder than the barrel material. Most of the online "facts" about blunderbuss use are just repeating the same myths over and over.
      For instance, "nails", as we know them, did not exist in the 1500s.
      Nails had to be made by hand, one at a time. This is why older homes were built without nails. During the revolutionary War, Washington's troops would recover any nails from the ashes after a fort or settlement was burned.
      Nails were expensive.
      What that means is, even if the owner really didn't care about destroying their barrel, it is extremely unlikely that he'd have access to enough random nails that he'd get the idea to use them as ammo. Unless he was a blacksmith or ferrier, engaged in the reshoe of horses' hooves.

      @ignaciobriceno9870 yes, in modern times. Nobody would have done that when the blunderbus was common.
      By the 1700s, that barrel shape was seldom produced any longer. Being good with any muzzleloading weapon means having to consistently recreate the same load and projectile weights/type. This is impossible if you are loading your barrel with just anything you happen to find. Flintlocks weren't cheap, and they take a long time to shoot. People weren't going to Cabelas and getting a blackpowder blunderbus for 1/4 week's pay like itnwas 2007.
      These things were like a year's salary when they were being made.
      Nobody is going to spend a year's salary on a machine, and then ram rocks down the brass barrel, ruining the machine and the chance of hitting their target with a known outcome.

    One way to make a "shorty" type of shotgun (whether sawed-off or made short) with a stockless pistol grip more ergonomic is to give it a rubberized grip with a contoured backstrap. Don't know why that's not a regular thing.
    0:20 That's not a sawed-off. Bruce used a different shotgun in each of the Evil Dead movies. That one's an IGA/Stoeger Coach Gun. It's not a Remington like he says. Remington hasn't made a side-by-side in a long time. Remington sporting doubles certainly aren't budget-priced like he describes. Anyway, that Coach Gun he's brandishing has 20" barrels, a standard blued finish, Brazilian hardwood stock (and forearm), and double triggers. But it IS a 12-gauge double-barrel, so at least he got that much right. You don't really want a hair trigger anyway.
    0:27 That one's a Stevens 311. Ash trims the barrels down from 28" to somewhere in the neighborhood of 12", something you can't really do with a chainsaw. IRL, it would ruin the barrel(s) AND the chain. Plus, whenever you shorten the barrel of a firearm (legal within certain parameters, mostly pertaining to barrel length and overall length, and typically done with smoothbore shotgun barrels), you have to sand off any burs that remain on the muzzle, as you would do after trimming ordinary metal pipes or whatnot.
    1:00 Just under a foot, so my estimate was basically correct.
    1:09 Those look like 20-inchers.
    2:28 That's not how you do a McMillan Tilt.
    2:39 If they're in possession of their senses, sure. But what if they're on PCP? I once read an article in a '90s issue of 'Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement' on police combat shotguns and it mentioned a case where a perp took a buckshot blast to the chest that shredded their heart, but they were still able to run an entire city block before their body gave out (because drugs).
    3:58 Or short-barrel shotgun (SBS). If it's made short, it's called a "short-barrel shotgun." If it has a short barrel and a stock, and it follows the design pattern of a proper combat shotgun, then it's called an "entry gun." Entry guns are ideal for home D-FENS.
    4:04 (26")
    4:07 Which is unconstitutional.
    4:25 Which is also unconstitutional and serves as further proof that "Big Law" is in cahoots with "Big Money." It's all a scam that allows the government to bilk more money from The People like the parasitic Leviathan it is.
    4:32 How much sense does it make that we have to pay MORE money for LESS gun?! 🤣
    5:00 Vietnam War-era U.S. officer's OD green raincoat. Same kind of coat worn by Michael Biehn in 'The Terminator' and Richard Crenna in 'First Blood'. Kyle Reese even carried his Ithaca 37 M&P using a makeshift version of basically that same type of rig. That wasn't a sawed-off or short-barrel, though. He only cut off the stock to make it easier to stash under that coat. The gun depicted there counts as an entry gun since it has a stock. Hard to tell if the barrel was made short to begin with or if it was manually shortened. Police armorers can do that, btw.
    5:21 False. Shortening the barrel doesn't really loosen the pattern. You do lose velocity, though, partially thanks to the relatively slow-burning nature of the powder used in shotgun shells.
    7:19 The shot is sill contained in a wad. Really, it's the presence or absence of a choke that tightens or loosens the pattern.
    7:44 That's about the maximum spread you get at room-length distances regardless of barrel length.
    7:48 Good ol' S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl! Probably the best depiction of a "rabbit-ear" sidelock style of side-by-side ("rabbit ears" = double hammers, sidelock = older and more complex design than a boxlock, more Old West-style). That one there is a TOZ-66. Some mods have the full-length version as well as the trimmed-down one. Some mods put sawed-off shotguns in your pistol slot, and if they also have functional vehicles, that means you can wield a sawed-off shotgun while driving just like Mad Max! Yes, I can provide proof. 😁
    7:57 Fact. I call that particular shotgun "Ol' Rabbit-Ears."
    8:29 Most realistic depiction of a rabbit-ear type of side-by-side. Too bad they screwed it up in 'Clear Sky' and left it screwed up in 'Call of Pripyat'. Those hammers are made to be thumbed back with the thumb, not palmed back with the palm!
    8:32 Breach-loaders don't have magazines. You load cartridges directly into the breach.

      @@martindrengenxbox360 Right?! A way-too-short barrel will cause a loss of damage potential, though, and a loss of effective range, but not due to any loosening of the pattern. That effect can be achieved with a rifled bore which has the opposite effect on a shot cluster as it has on a slug. Since shotgun shells use low-pressure/slow-burning powders (compared to rifle powders), a barrel that's too short or too long will affect performance. But on a combat shotgun, that's not usually a big deal since you still get plenty of punch, so a 14" barrel is perfect.

    The reason we have laws on short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotgun (or sawed off shotguns) was it because of gangsters it was too close a potential loophole to a law that had not gone into effect
    The 1934 NFA which ads the tax stamp involves registration requirements to short barrel rifles in short barreled shotguns along with things like machine guns (which the registry was closed in 1986 preventing any new machine guns from being registered after that date) and suppressors as well as destructive devices (aka usually heavy explosives and things like grenade launchers)
    However the original draft of the 1934 NFA had a provision to add handguns to this list but due to lobbying at the time they were removed. The law for short-barreled rifles and shotguns was originally meant to close a loophole because if handguns were banned people would just saw off rifles and shotguns. But they managed to keep the provision short-barreled rifles and shotguns in law because the politicians thought of them as gangster guns.
    Meaning that the law does not make sense because if pistols are legal and rifles are legal why is the middle ground regulated? I would argue that a pistol is a far more practical weapon than a sawed shotgun And is even more concealable

    They've been restricted since 1934 in the U.S. but you can still submit an application to buy one or to build one. I plan on making my own. As long as Uncle Sam gets your money for a tax stamp, you can own one once your paperwork gets approved. It's considered a short-barrelled shotgun if the barrel is less than 18" OR the overall length is less than 26". Rifles also need to be at least 26" long, but the barrels only need to be 16". It was 18" for rifles too, then the government let people buy surplus M1 carbines that only had 17.75" long barrels. The government was violating the NFA by letting people buy short-barreled rifles, so they changed the law and said rifles only needed to have 16" barrels.

    I find it funny how most banned weapons are actually the most useless and least dangerous compared to some that are legal.
    "Switchblades" for example. Illegal in my state because they're "scary" but utterly useless, even in a self defense situation. If you hit the blade against some hard enough (i.e. stabbing), the spring inside will break and the knife will be rendered useless.
    I found this out when I broke my $200 Microtech on a damn pumpkin.
    A full tang hunting knife is far more dangerous and deadly than any so-called "switchblade".
    Don't even get me started on suppressors...
    Oh sorry, I mean "silencers" that indeed do NOT make a gun silent. They just make it bulky and harder to conceal and manipulate. Sometimes they even weigh down the barrel and prevent the slide from chambering another round.
    Lastly, there's brass knuckles. Obviously they can cause some serious damage, but then again... so can a rock.
    And who the hell is actually using a pair of brass knuckles? All these things that are illegal and supposedly "dangerous" aren't worth any more than their cool factor. Which is all people buy them for anyway

    Shotguns with very short barrels are legal to own here in South Africa, assuming you went through the proper licensing process, but it wouldn't be different to any other firearm in that regard. You could even have a barrel shortened, as long as it's done by a licensed gunsmith and you inform the CFR of the alteration made. There are no special taxes or anything you have to pay like the NFA requires in the USA.

      Your spread is determined by your muzzle's bore dimensions, not your barrel length. A sawed off is open choke aka cylinder bore, which gives the same spread from a 10" barrel as it would a 30" barrel.
      You can have any length barrel choked to whatever choke dimensions suit you. The reason full size shotguns have differnt barrel lengths is because they swing and lead diffently.
      It has nothing to do with range.

    There are guns for sale today in the US that looks like a sawed off shotgun but isnt because it was manufactured that way by design and is classed as a “firearm” whereas a sawed off shot gun is a normal shotgun that has been altered into illegal dimensions by an individual. The legal version was never any other weapon before. The receiver/ frame is newly manufactured along with all its other components. And so legal, and just as lethal as a sawed off shotgun.

    The American National Firearms Act (1934) was intended to treat pistols as if they were machine guns. Pistols were the "evil" weapon of choice for people with crime on the mind. That intention was cancelled because the sponsors of the new law refused to share power--but remaining in the law were pistol substitutes: short barrel rifles and sawed-off shotguns. Any gun under 26 inches (about 68 cm) was deemed "concealable" and therefore "regulated." Along with this was a restriction on short barrels. When a criminal couldn't get a pistol, they'd substitute another firearm, often cutting down barrel and buttstock. This practice continues to the present. In 2009 I witnessed federal agents bringing confiscated criminally modified guns to a National Guard garage for destruction.
    The US ban on sawed off shotguns is a remnant of a failed pistol ban.
