When i travel to the Philippines. I always make sure the 100 dollar bills are in excellent condition. I never had an issue in exchanging for pesos at SM. Appreciate all the updates Ms Terri
For travel (from the US), we set up a checking account with Schwab. They reimburse all ATM fees. We use ATMs usually at an SM and receive an excellent exchange rate. All fees are refunded at the end of the month.

I brought 10.000 Euro with me to vacation and I only could change in bigger cities like cebu or dumaguete. But I got always a good rate and no hassle with Euro bills. Only Western Union offered me a bad rate. So I smiled and sayed no thank you kuja 🤣

Hi, I’ve read your comment in the FSA Facebook account re this problem. I’m a dual citizen who goes back to the US every year. I opened a $ acct in A bank here for the purpose of sending money from US to Phl. Before I go back home. I think these people who goes here for vacations should make a thorough research of how to do things before they even buy their tickets so they won’t meet a lot of difficulties when they arrive here and then complain in the social media.I’m glad that you take time to reasearch for us and make things easier. To this people who complains about how things are here in the Phl. Kung Maarte ang Pinas Bakit kayo nagpipilit umuwi dito?
A word of advice to Credit Card or Debit Card users, if you will use it on any establishment in the Philippines make sure you check your bank statements regularly, I had this horrifying experience with 'Dad's Saisaki' Restaurant, they triple billed my credit card for a P9K dinner with my family and when I checked my bank statement it showed that they have charged my card 3 times for the same amount.
I went back to the restaurant to complain but sure enought the manager started pointing fingers to the bank (BDO) who happen to process their billings, so then I went to the said (BDO) bank and lo' and behold the said that they will not process the billings if it wasn't forwarded to them by the restaurant. You see this is how the steal money from the public weather it be the restaurant or any other establishment let alone a banking institution in Pinas. It is so frustrating to even deal with these 'CROOKS', however I am fortunate enough to have a very good bank behind me and as soon as I got back to the US I took up the issue with my bank and within 48 hours the funds were returned to my account.
These resolutions are what we look forward to here in the USA, reliability, trustworthy and most of all honesty in resolving matters that count most with their clients these are the types of service we can only hope for to happen in Pinas.
In 2017 I used my credit card in a coffee shop in Ermita and the next day somebody try to use it to purchase ticket to Egypt. Glad my bank alarmed me.

Hi Jennifer (and everyone else). This is my hack for traveling to the Philippines. I did this last March when I was there and I will plan to do it again this September. Since I am visiting my fiance I did not bring any cash money with me. Instead while I was there I sent her money from Western Union. The money was available to her in minutes. We would then go and get the cash in pesos. She would then pay cash for what we needed cash for (taxis, etc). And I would use my debit card where ever I could use it (expensive restaurants, Department stores, grocery stores, etc.). She did not spend any of her money. I paid for everything. I even one time sent her cash while sitting in the Western Union place and she the retrieved the money. It worked out perfect.
You can probably do this with other services too, we just happen to have Western Union already set up.

I do the same but I use worldremit
I send Western Union to myself for pick up in the Philippines. When doing this its better to send it in person so if you don't collect it in the Philippine you can get it back upon return. (more of a hassle if you send it online)

I don’t bring Euro bills with me anymore when vacationing in the Philippines since 2017 because I opened my own savings bank account there. It‘s hassle-free, I just do online banking with the affiliated bank here that only costs 8€ per transaction and the money is processed within 24 hrs. So I have all the access of withdrawing Ph money from ATMs whenever I‘m in the Philippines. It costs high when using everytime the MasterCard or Visa.. Though I admit I use always my Master Card when shopping and hotel bookings ..only that.. for other purposes like groceries, restaurants etc. I use my BDO ATM card 😊
Jennifer, I have been impressed with your updates since the beginning and I hope your channel will continue to grow. I left out a couple of things in my first post. My wife and I are permanent resident visa holders with 13G visa's. This means we get many more rights and protections than just regular tourists. There are few things that we still can't do, such as vote, participate in politics in anyway, and we can not secure a mortgage in the Philippines. My wife works remote for a US based company and I am self employed as a coffee consultant. That said, I have a Tax Identification Number issued by BIR in the Philippines and can work for local Philippine companies and be paid in Peso's. We both have bank accounts in the Philippines and regularly transfer money from our US accounts. We spend about half our time in each country each year. We bring $100 bills with us when we return to the Philippines so we don't have to sit in line at the bank to withdraw larger amounts than we can get out of the ATM each day. The banks in the Philippines should be ashamed of their operations. Here in the US, we would never tolerate lines at the banks in the Philippines. I really don't understand why the people tolerate it.
You might not believe it but I found out that the Casino here in the Philippines is the best place to exchange foreign currency with a good exchange rate and feel safer for large amount of money. They have their own exchange booth for foreign currency.

SM para magpapalit ng $1,000 ayaw palitan dahil daw misprint dahil nga magkakasunod yong mga numbers. Ang ginawa ko ay nirumble ko yong dollar para di magkakasunod yong mga numbers. Saka pa lang pinalitan at sa ibang tao ko na inabot.
This is absolutely true based on my experience. I always ask the teller I need a newer bills for trip purposes outside the country. Simple kababayan.
In my experience from maybe 10-15 years ago, tellers never liked me doing that because they often did not have enough new bills in their cash drawers. To pick out the newer bills. it always slowed down the line behind me. They suggested I make a special appointment when I want to do this. Maybe things have changed considering the big influx of new cash in the states.
My bank Wells Fargo accommodated me… no problems with them… teller wish me also a happy trip too🥰

I got the advice that i can send money to my self from my bank with Western Union, World Remit or Remitly when im in the Philippine, so i will try that coming travel.
I know one friend who have done that with Western Union and it was easy he told me.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for your videos. Just got back from my trip and your information was so useful and made my trip planning so much easier! The currency exchange with older dollar bills is not just an issue for the Philippines, this also just happened to me in Singapore. The first money changer I approached mentioned that they could not accept the older $100 bill however he did point me to a UOB which is one of the bigger banks in SG and that was fine. So this is apparently an issue in other parts of the world too
Yes ! I learned from my last trip, make sure the bills are in Good Shape. I had 3 bills that were refused.
I go directly to the bank who accept marked or older notes at the same rate regardless of denomination. I brought $4,000 last April in $100, and $50 bills. Even department stores have money changers that have less lines compared to those pawnshops or money changer within the malls. But we also have money changers who come to my place so I do not have to walk around with much money. And remember that each country will have a limit of the amount your bring in, the US limits to $10,000 that you do not have to declare. I once brought a bigger amount and declared it and did not encounter any additional questioning at my port of entry. I make it a point to bring home US$200.00 worth of PHP that I use when flying back home. And I make it a habit to check Jennifer’s most recent updates prior to my trips to the PHL. Thank you, po.
Gday jen. yes can confirm that sending money to yourself is the easiest ,cheapest and has much higher limits .just got back from 9 weeks in PHP. did take some cash but the exchange rate was about ₱5 less per au$ and they did not except latest au$100 note.used Worldremit and the fee was only about 1/2 of atm fees and was able to sent large amounts (₱ 60000) and can sent direct to your mobile phone linked Gcash or mayo pay account with you can open as a foreigner with your prepaid cell phone with eliminated the need to carry large amounts of cash

Jen, We just got back from Cagayan de Oro , over 2 weeks ago, there were no problem with documents, we brought what was required. ALSO, instead of bringing cash, we informed our bank that we’ll be outside the USA so they’ll know, and we just take our money from ATM over there.

I usually get my money exchange at the airport when I first arrive then I either went to an ATM or a Bank. After my first trip to the Philippines I decided to make sure I have at least 5k pesos with me so I don't have to get money when I arrive.

When visiting in the past, I mostly used my USA VISA ATM debit card. Yes, when using foreign cash, they are very picky about the condition of the money and at places like SM Dept. store, they will make you fill out the serial number of each bill you exchange (what a pain). Now that I have lived here for 5 years, I still use my USA debit card for 99% of of my cash withdrawals but I use Remitly to move money over to Philippine wallets like Maya to pay bills online. And after 5 years, I have never seen a need for a Philippine bank account. BTW, I always see the notice that I am being charged 250 php for each withdrawal but that never shows up on my actual bank statement. Maybe they are doing something else like deceasing the exchange rate but I observe that my exchange rate with ATM withdrawals to be close to the official rate. That 250 php or $5 is about the same as the ATM fees I always had to pay in the US. I do use a credit union who may be absorbing the fees (like the Charles Schwab ATM withdrawals do)...but that is just speculation.
Wutsa, i-am concern about safety/ carrying green bucks. Remitly has $ limits, we should all go digital-wallet/ Apps like Apple-Google pay.Or Bitcoin?
ATM cards that reimburse ATM/local bank fees is an excellent suggestion. These transactions also conform to the actual exchange rate, which is always higher than that offered by any other exchange institution such as banks and even the "black market". The limitation to ATM use is that the Philippine banks operating the ATMs impose a daily maximum on withdrawals, usually 10000 PhP. Also, ATM card companies may have their own daily limits, usually $500. Therefore, my experience is that bringing over large sums of foreign currency can only be accomplished via bank wire or Western Union, both incurring substantial fees. If anyone knows something other than this, I would be very interested in learning about it.
Storing dollars in a Filipino bank can also incur U.S. government scrutiny. Accounts in excess of $10000 must be reported under FBAR guidelines. The penalty for failing to report this is severe.
@@cailipanable It is not as dangerous here as you might think. Much more dangerous in USA cities but in crowded places, I have heard of pickpockets. And Phils bucks are just as desirable as green bucks. Nothing violent though. I haven't seen apple-google pay where I live. Manila may have a few bitcoin ATM's but I never heard of any retailer accepting BTC. To me the safest is probably ATM, especially since you can choose ATMs where security guards are close by but even with that, be careful of skimmers. All have withdrawal limits unless you use expensive bank to bank SWIFT transfers ($35-45) but even there you may be limited to $50K per transfer. In my case I use Remitly a lot for onlie bill paying paying and I never violated a limit. You can also use local wallets like Maya, GCash and Coins.ph, all of which have limits. If you do transfer to a local bank account, the bank is only insured for $10K per account and if you reach $10K you need to inform the USA treasury by filling out forms (US citizens) which is a pain.

Pag nagpapalit ka ng dollar sa Pilipinas isabay mo yung smaller bills mo sa $100 bills para parehong ang rate. Kung magpapalit ka ng smaller bills lang, madalas mas mababa ang rate.

I send US dollars to the Philippines by the XE website. No charges but the exchange rate is approximately half of a point lower.
I encountered many times here in the Philippines, the money changers like sm or villarica,they won't accept dollar bills that are dated 1993,1996 and I was told it should be dated year 2000 and up.
yes true, $$$ bills with micro holes as small as needle holes are being rejected at exchange stations. Folded and torn $$$ bills are being rejected, as well. However, as small as $20 bills are being exchanged at Villarica at the same rate as $100 bills.

My first trip there I experienced problems. I quickly learned. The best way to do it is to bring the newest cleanest bills from your bank. 100s and 50s are preferred. And in my experience money changers in the malls have the best exchange rates. Tues. thru Friday. Avoid exchanging on the weekends when the stock market is closed.
That has been going on for years and I experienced that in 2017. As Jennifer suggested, go to your bank prior to going home and let them know you need some new crispy $100 bills!🤣 or the workaround is send money to WesternUnion to yourself or family members which was what I did!
If you are coming from the US, you can order some Philippines Pesos from your bank, it usually takes a few days but it's one less thing to worry about when you get to the Philippines 🇵🇭
And they will give you the WORST exchange rate
@@kenlaub4158 No different than at the Manila Airport. So if you feel safe taking a couple thousand dollars out of your pocket in front of all those people in the Airport, knock yourself out. Personally I feel much safer inside my US bank.

Most don’t except if there’s a crease in the middle or any damaged on it I got like 400$ US dollars I can’t change and 80$ US dollars worth of Colombian pesos they will not change Colombian pesos anywhere atms charge 250 peso for maximum 10,000 (200$us) pesos withdrawal but one bank union bank will allow u to withdrawl 30,000 pesos for 250 peso fee

And also pag dollar series 2006 Hindi din tatanggapin sa pinas. Dapat malinis yun $100 bills for sure yun dalhin.
Actually jen, they accepted the old $bills but less Lang po yung exchange. Kc when I’m arrived sa Manila airport po, nagpapalit ako ng $. Yun ang na experience ko that time.
SM in Rosales Pangasinan did not accept my old 100 dollar bill a year ago so i made sure i asked my bank for new 100 dollar bills the next time i went home.

Yeah i too experienced na ung dala kung usd ai hindi tinanggap po, ung sakin is medyo luma na ung kulay at meron sya parang dots un ung reason bakit hindi natanggap po . . Especially kung may mark ng stapler po hindi tinatanggap kahit saang banks.
I like to send money to my wife's family before we arrive. They keep the money until we arrive and that also eliminates having to carry large sums of cash while I am traveling. Then if I need more while there I will just send more to myself as needed.
I send myself money via western union before i travel and whilst in Philippine's, dont carry cash, you get better exchange rate when sending to yourself rather than cash exchange there....
I think the best way is to have your dollar currency exchange it to philippine peso before boarding the flight or just withdraw cash from an atm here in the philippines but just make sure to call your US Bank to put travel notice so that they can remove the restrictions for the transactions of your debit card.

Ako Western Union bago pumunta sa Pilipinas sa nobya as recipient. Kami dadating at yan tulong sa gumawa madali sa meron pera kailan doon. Ako setup banko kard sa hindi bawal sa ATM din nalang in case pero often ang Western Union basta sa tumumtulong sa yan. Importante sa setup yan kasi ako karoon bawal sa ang kard kasi bago karoon nalang ang stripe pero kailan sa chip transition ay bawal talaga pero ako ay maswerte isa ATM ay broken pero yan hindi bawal sa withdrawal sa technical glitch pero yung ay mahirap beses yung taon kasi mahirap sa tawag banko pero ngayon sa kanyang app pwede update travel notification on ang fly.
I bring money and I usually go to the bank and withdraw before I go . I have no problem exchanging it through Villarica . Closer to where I live .

Well there is a chase bank in the Philippines which is located in Pasay, might as well go there and exchange your USD money either new or old.
I usually take close to $10,000 to the Philippines each trip because I will be building a house for me and my wife soon. So I start a few months before my trip withdrawing a few thousand and take out all the perfect $100 and redeposit the damaged ones when I do another withdrawal. I do that till I have all perfect $100 for my trip to cebu city. I used to stand there and ask the bank clerk to give me all perfect $100 but that didn work so well with waiting customers.

Airports usually give lower rates. The big casinos give good rates and are easy to deal with.
I use World Remit Orbit to send money to the Philippines
Western Union are pain to deal with and kept blocking me from sending money outside New Zealand
I tried for two months to sort out the problem but gave up and went to World Remit..no problems at and they are very helpful...
Jennifer, we have a Dollar account at our BDO Branch, and we send money to that account and convert the money right there. Less hassle for us.
I would always withdraw from BPI and then go to a money changer for better rate BUT I checked the rate on my last trip and come to find out the bank and a lower rate than Core Pacific money changer.
