Belaj means beautiful in Esperanto. Esperanto is a language (the word means "that which expect"). It was created / planed by Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof , a young man who lived in Białystok (currently in Poland, at the time the Russian Empire). In Białystok, many peoples lived and many languages were spoken, which made it difficult to understand, even in the most everyday situations, which motivated him to create a neutral auxiliary language, in order to solve the problem.
As a young man - 19 years old - he created the first version of the "lingwe universala" (universal language) a kind of archaic Esperanto which he presented at school and started working on it with his coleagues. His father, however, made him promise to stop working in his language to dedicate himself to his studies. Zamenhof then went to Moscow to study medicine. On one of his visits to his homeland, he discovered that his father had burned all the manuscripts in his language. as he thought the son was no longer interested on them. Yet , Zamenhof then began to rewrite everything, adding improvements and making the language evolve.
The first Esperanto book was released on July 26, 1887, in Russian, containing the 16 grammatical rules, pronunciation, some exercises and a small vocabulary, the fFirst edition of Unua Libro, in Russian.
