I don't think this video captured the main issue on why Sparta declined (as well as Athens, Corinth, Thebes, etc.) Macedon set the stage of the end of city-states. City-states just did not have the manpower and population to keep up with full Kingdoms made up of multiple cities. Macedon was a full Kingdom and not just a city-state. Macedon then acquired basically most the known world and fractured into other multiple Empires such as the Seleucids which used the same tactics as the Greek City-States plus Alexander's Cavalry tactics, War Elephants form India, and some of the best of Persian ideas but fielded armies 5x to 10x the size of the City-States. The only how for Greek City states was to band together into Alliances like the Achaean League. Even then, from manpower perspective, they could not compete with larger players like the Seleucid Empire, Ptolemiac Empire, Macedon, or Rome.
i remember watching that on 300. pretty sucky for king leonidas when xerxes cut off his head and threw it off a cliff. good thing there’s gonna be a third one tho when the athenians get payback eh?
Aristotle told us clearly why it fell, but apparently you and everyone else knows better. His answer is 'sexist' so you have to rewrite history to make it fit modern day propaganda.
I don't know what Aristotle said but Spartan hegemony lasted over 300 years. I'd say that was a pretty good run. Athens, obviously in important ways different politically and socially from Sparta, was not more dominant than Sparta. What do we attribute their fall to -- democracy and openness to the outside world? There are complex causes here and chance occurrences that could have altered Spartan, Athenian or Persian history. For just one example what if Cyrus the Younger's javelin had splintered the head of Artaxerxes II at Cunuxa in 401 BC instead of Cyrus being killed? It would have been a different world for Spartans well into the 4th century imo. Maybe even Macedon might not have become as powerful. History sometimes turns on chance events. Arguing for different political systems ought to be made on other grounds than simply retrospective winners and losers imo.
@@johnz8843 you don't even know what he said and instead of looking it up to become better informed and relate to my comment you just project your own opinions without that knowledge. narcissism much?
@@tomtaylor5623 Honestly you completely missed the point of my comment. I was saying that the video didn't capture the reason Sparta fell since other cities quite different from Sparta politically and socially didn't last as long. I thought one of the main points of the video was that Sparta's political and social organization led to its fall.

Spartans were a respectable courageous military society in ancient ages. They were maybe not good at administration, political and internal affairs. But one thing is for sure they were one of the top-ranking military factions in history.

"A few hundred of their allies" I think you will find it was a much great force than that. myths and legends more like.

Good video until the end. If slavery and authoritarianism lead to eventual downfall of societies then how do you explain Islam?

They always had societal and political problems due to conflicting political views and leadership.

We are doing that to America and many other Countries as we speak..only not military ruling elitist but elitist all the same
