For outstanding player managers check out Lou Boudreau, in 1948 he was the manager, he played 150 games at shortstop, hit .355, won the MVP and won the world series.
@@aarontelander Another bit of weird Twins trivia: Both Rocco's and Nelly's first HRs came off of the Twins - Rocco took Brad Radke deep in a 2004 contest that resulted in him setting a new record for hits by a rookie in April, and Nelly's first off of Willie Eyre during his year with the Twins in 2006.
First time coming across this series by mlb but this was pretty interesting and a little bit funny. I would love to see pinella trying to argue in a 3 piece suit haha! Looking forward to more videos and the playoffs starting! Stay safe everyone
Crew Chiefs wear similar uniforms to their pit crew members, they just may wear the shirt version instead of the fire suit. Some Crew Chiefs used to also be members of their own crew.
''In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager. And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do. If you'd ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform, you'd know the reason for this custom.'' - George Carlin
I thought so too. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that all persons on the field must be in uniform during regular play until the final out. It doesn't specify a type of uniform. Grounds keepers are in uniform, umps, even security and the local police. You don't see reporters on the field or even in the dugout until the game is called. I don't even recall camera people going past the bullpen gates when a pitcher comes out.
NFL head coaches are required to wear some sort of licensed merch of their team, like a hoodie, windbreaker, ski jacket, whatever, depending on location and weather. It's a deal made with the apparel manufacturer. So while they have SOME leeway, there's got to be at least a team logo visible on SOMETHING they wear, even if it's just a ball cap or beanie.
ehh, racing uniforms aren't much of a thing back then, they were basically just an in-house shirt/polo with sponsors. It wasn't until this decade when apparel brands saw how Puma striving since the '90s (due to them supplying firesuits for many teams) and started to enter the racing market (Castore, Kappa, Umbro).
Because it’s baseball. The only game that has players who always play out of bounds and the only sport where the defense controls the ball. And the skipper wears a uniform.
it’s pretty cool way to see it as them being a part of the team. i really only imagine them doing what they do now with hoodies now. maybe even sweats or athletic golf pants
Managers and coaches have some leeway in the exact parts of the uniform they wear. Many managers in the early 00s would wear one specific type of zip up, fleece lined jacket overtop their jersey. Most managers today wear sleeveless or short sleeve hoodies and base layer shirts. All of this is part of the same kit that players have access to.
Earl weaver getting a shout-out for his secret cigarette pocket is just 🤌 for me. Tiny little factoid you expect nobody outside of Baltimore to know. Gotta love it.
This doesn’t address base coaches, who also wear uniforms. Not sure if all coaches wear them, but trainers and non-coach personnel usually wear a team branded pullover shirt and/or jacket and business slacks. It’s in part a perk, as after the game your uniform gets laundered with the rest of the team’s gear so you’re not putting wear and tear on your personal clothing. Players get to sell their worn out gear to memorabilia vendors, so guessing managers and coaches do as well if they’re popular enough.
beyond the on-field duties of managers (kicking dirt and all), dugouts are no place for nice shoes and suit pants. Back in the day, spitting chewing tobacco right onto the dugout floor was commonplace and would stain any clothing, and nowadays, sunflower seeds, drink spills, snacks etc can often litter the dugout floor. I always thought the manager uniform was a practical accommodation for the workplace cleanliness (or lackthereof) of a typical baseball dugout
Great video, but I think you guys missed the biggest reason: managers are expected to conduct on-field exercises before the game. It’s not very inspiring for players to see their managers avoid the physical aspects of the game.
Easy. Because many Managers were also players on the team. Pete Rose was the last one. I was hoping David Ross would try it. He could’ve pinch hit once in a while.
My father once told me (and like being on Wikipedia, that means it must be true) that no one not wearing a uniform is allowed on the field in an official capacuty during a game). He said that that is why Connie Mack in his suit never went to the mound to change pitchers, but always sent someone else. According to this video, though, that is not correct.
Wasn't it only recently Managers had to be in full uniform? I could've sworn I remember someone getting in trouble for having the sweatshirt on but no uniform top. Then a season or two later the MLB relaxed the dress code or something?
I find it just as interesting (perhaps even more interesting) that this holds true even in the lower levels of the sport. Most high school and college baseball coaches I have seen wear uniforms. In Little League, though, coaches generally do not.
Not really a big baseball fan but I’ve always loved how the managers suit up with the players 😂😂 I think it’s awesome. It has to be the only sport like that ?

It's not out of the question with managers being younger they could their last year or two as managers, especially now pandemic teams are looking to recoup their losses!!!
Baseball is the only sport where the manager/coaches are actually allowed onto the playing area during a game, so it makes sense for them to be in some sort of team attire.
The new policy involving players not being able to promote themselves on their social media is bogus. As a fan suffering from the blackouts and cannot watch their home team play due to not having cable, stuff like this is pushing me away even more from consuming the MLB product. If it weren’t for you guys showing my teams highlights from the game from the night before I wouldn’t even subscribe to your UA-cam channel

Didn't there used to be a rule where you couldn't step on the playing field unless you were in uniform. Connie Mack had a coach make pitching changes.

If I recall, Art Howe had intended to wear the suit during the game and was told no by the mlb, which is why he only wore it for pregame.
