I love the granny square blocking board! Are you steaming them before you put them on the board? Or soaking? The one you took off the board looks nice and crisp so I can’t imagine you’re just putting it on dry but it might be.

With Japanese crochet books, instructions are shown in crochet symbol charts instead of abbreviations. You can also use the Google Translate app on your phone and turn on camera. It does a good job at translating.😊
