OK, just STOP embarrassing Les Claypool, please! The man is a national TREASURE!
Don't suppose you've got the tabs for this? Pleeeeeeze!
Hey dude, great playing as always. I would love to hear you cover "Do hot girls like chords" by Knower. Their bass player Sam Wilkes writes some great bass riffs. Thanks!
awesome commercial segment!...nice delivery!
I don't suppose you have the tabs for this, please!
The fretless sound gives it a strong sense of mystery and curiosity. Absolutely great work as always
Thanks! Fretless is definitely one of the most mysterious instruments
@@CharlesBerthoud Certainly!
@@CharlesBerthoud and in my opinion, works really well for fade! 🖤
@@CharlesBerthoudYep. What my next note will be nobody knows, not even me.
Almost an East Indian vibe as well, which actually suits the melody funny enough.
Metallica goes Punjab
When that first verse kicked in and those harmonics... chills man...chills..
The lower register sounds uncannily similar to James’s voice 😳
full METAL jacket 4 you !!!!! Sargent: "How tall are you private Charles." Chales: "1,7 meter, sir" Sargent: "Since when it is it possible to Stagg (Amp) Shit so high???"@@CharlesBerthoud
@@CharlesBerthoudOMG… those first 8 bars of the verse really do have Papa Het’s tone behind them. Well played sir… well played!
The harmonics are spine tingling.
This guy is single-handedly changing what the bass guitar means as an instrument. It's awe-inspiring to see.
He uses both hands pretty well tbh
That fretless bass was one of the best investments you did on your instrument lineup...
Considering it probably cost the better part of $8k, it's a damn good thing it sounds as good as it does and gets as much time on his channel as it does.
It's an incredible bass, but... 💸💸💸
I'm always amazed by your technical ability. But what gets me the most is your musicality. The subtle slides, bends, and phrasings you employ are just gorgeous! Well done, as always Charles!
He plays so well only he knows if he ever makes a mistake.
(Inflections)
I absolutely love when you play fretless. So much feel in the tones. Amazing stuff Charles! Have a great weekend.
Thank you!
And i do not like it haha:)
Every tone sounds ducked up. Like ieeeeauuuuu (cat sound)
@@Xennox2 Well that is one of the great things about music. It is incredibly subjective and everybody can find something that they enjoy, even if not everybody has matching tastes. Have an excellent day, and thank you for sharing your viewpoint.
And yet, no one seems to able to quantify or properly explain when they say "feel". @@incognito7039
2:24 Now THIS is the real insanity!
Thank you for letting me test the accuracy of my computer speakers. I was thinking of buying new ones, but this music played so well and beautifully, I think I'll keep them.
Haha happy to help 🤣
I played it though a tin can and some string, it still sounded great.
In that case I'm going to start mixing songs using my cell phone. 😝
I think Lars would want to bury your bass further in the mix, as you can hear it way too well currently 😎
You never disappoint with your fret less compositions, well done!
True - he’d probably find a way to make the bass inaudible in a solo bass recording 🤯
@@CharlesBerthoud😂😂😂
You don't understand music production. The Bass is perfectly audible in Metallica. It's just doesn't have the high end loud so you can't hear all the clicks and rattle that's all over this.
@@redrick8900 And Justice For All?
@@redrick8900 🤦♂ Clearly the absurdity of burying the bass in the mix of a bass only cover is lost on you. Plus I had to post my comment on a song from ride the lightning which admittedly doesn’t make much sense, but everyone knows that it is scientifically impossible to play songs from …and justice for all on bass therefore Charles can never give me a better opportunity for hilarious commentary 🤷♂
Those harmonics are stunningly clear and beautiful.
I was thinking the same
The way you play the fretless, with tapping and BAR CHORDS?! Amazing.
Cliff would be proud
You never cease to push the boundaries of where the music can go, and you do it so well. Your love for it truly shows in the works you do.
Been a life long Metallica fan 30+ years and have probably listened to Fade to Black a million times and can say that this brought so much more depth of feelings to the melody of the song that it visibly stunned me. Great job ❤
Love that you finally got a signature! I love this arrangement so much...hauntingly beautiful
The sponsorship part at the end was absolutely nuts. Unreal skills.
Finally a comment on that. This dude is actually insane
Love the quick harmonic lick and the strummed chord sections.
Man I love the fretless sound. The sound may not be as clean but the semi tones you get sound so organic and just reminds me of nature
It sounds a bit like apocalyptica, which is incredible to me. Great work 👏
Love Apocalyptica 🔥
@@CharlesBerthoud me too😊
Saw them open for Rammstein once at Wulheide in Berlin. The whole show was proceeded by a thunderstorm and then they joined Rammstein on stage for Ohne Dich. Majestic.
As a cellist, I wholeheartedly agree
The verse riff and the verse plus vocal lines riff were well played. I've never seen the verse riff played in that position. Excellent interpretation.
That was the very best ad I've seen a youtuber do in my life!!!
The opening solo was fantastic, but when that verse bit kicked after gave me a warm fuzzy feeling
Another beautiful arrangement (not to mention performance, production, etc.). Thank you!
Your musicality is amazing as is your technical ability, but I'm stunned at just how good your intonation is on the fretless. You just keep improving and inspiring the bass world, as well as all musicians in general. Thank you!
This guy is an absolute class act. Gets right into the music, puts the ad at the END of the video and always delivers on great content. Appreciate you charles! Keep dominating!
Frog Leap does too.
You just made this 50 year old man's eyes sweat... Amazing! You are amazing! Thanks for sharing this with us!
This is musical perfection, Charles! Bravo!!! 🎉
Got to be my favorite cover youve ever done Charles!
great as always charles ! one of my fave tracks ! good job
Dude that's sick! Nice job on this one!
the first ever solo that i've learned to play back when i was 13 years old, this gives me chills, so nostalgic and calm this song means alot to me. Thank you for this lovely work!. i still play the guitar but unfortunately they cut the electricity here 20 hours a day... well maybe sometime somewhere in this life i could be able to play my guitar and have a good time with some good people.. i didn't explode yet, im still being patient
Goosebumps. Thank you Charles.
Man, great to see you doing so well, your playing is just next level. This is awesome!
Charles, there so many youtubers doing incredible work which captivate my very eclectic mind that it makes me feel guilty I can't watch and like all my subscriptions. But this was so beautiful I had to like and subscribe. A bass lover all my long life, I'm awed by your taste and talent. I play your videos for people who aren't bass lovers and they always comment favorably. Thank you for the inspiration and moments of enchantment. Oh yeah, and elevating corny humor to always bring a smile along with the cringes. 👍🙏
What a great cover. It’s sounds beautiful!
Love the little multitasking segment at the end. Definitely the most engaging sponsor message I've ever seen. Not easy to do! Cheers from Sydney - Dave
That one was one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Bravo my good sir and keep the tunes coming! 🎉🎉🎉
Fretless bass is my favorite instrument ever. I absolutely love when you're playing it !!!
Hey Man, love that fretless sound! Thank you for sharing your gift with us all. :)
That was beautiful. Thank you for that 2 minutes of bliss!
Dude we need a full cover of this now
I wish this song was so much longer
fade to black is by far my favourite song ever made, thank you so much for making this vid!
It’s a really good song!
amazing arrangement, fretless! omg. Thanks Charles!
This is so beautiful. I've told my loved ones I want FTB played at my funeral, and I think I may need to request yours to be an addition to that request. Excellent, as always.
Your playing is on a completely different level.
Was I the only one singing along in my head with this? Amazing as always, one of my favorite Metallica songs.
I'm not crying, you are 😢
God bless you dear Mr. Charles Berthoud!
Seeing the word "FRETLESS" on a new CB video is ALWAYS a treat. You do so many things so incredibly well, but something extra special always comes out when that fretless is in your hands.
This is amazing! Even better than your regular awesomeness.
As a rookie composer, I always want to use a bunch of instruments that I can't get/play in my pieces. Your style of bass playing is definitely on top of that list. Great work!
Could you upload a song to your channel? I would like to hear your composition😮
A tear comes to my eye… great job
Those slides sound heavenly.... one of the most beautiful and emotional things I heard on this channel
Ok, this is my new ringtone now. Thanks ❤
Metallica right?
This comment section has become "what band is this wrong answers only". I love it
No, it's the Bee Gees.
Impaled Northern Moonforest
Actually Megadeth
Dream Theater
Yes
That was amazingly beautiful... Thank you for this !
I would love to see a full-length cover of that song!
This is going to put Metallica on the map. You deserve half their earnings.
Вау это замечательно спасибо за мотивацию
You gave me chills G! Mad respect! ❤
My bro, a bassist, introed me to you a while back with “Hardest song Back in Black.”
I keep seeing snippets, and we watch your stuff on weekends together.
Wanted to take a sec and say: you are an absolute master of that instrument, and even though Ive heard the original song about a thousand times:
This is goddamned beautiful.
Well done, Charles, and dont ever stop. Bad. Ass.
Who else thinks Charles has made the fretless bass iconic?✋
Only to younger viewers ... so many jazz, rock and metal bands have iconic fretless bass. Primus, early P J Harvey, Death, so many to name, but Jaco!
So heavenly, loved that harmonic trill and the finger work after into the power cords very cool! Thanks!
We all know Charles is just a (double) master of the bass and his compositions of new and cover music are flat out amazing!!! As a singing bassist some of my fans (musical and non-musical alike) were sometimes MORE impressed that I could play a song, lean out and talk to them as if I were just standing there without missing any bass parts. To watch Charles play that riff and talk about Nord was much more impressive than most of the folks watching this video will ever understand!! Hats off to you sir RESPECT!!!
Шикарный звук. 👍🤪
I've always loved this song. Well played!
Need an hour or so long track of you playing songs like this that fade into different songs. I'd pay for that especially for falling asleep
Today is the 2nd time I heard this beautiful piece! I can hear this over and over and never get enough! Beautifully played, thank you!!!!
Man, you never fail to amaze. That was beautiful.
I've listened to more bass than I can remember. Brother, you are the best there is. I hope you never get tired of what you do.
Thank you for this, mate. Beautiful stuff as usual
Absolutely Amazing & Beautiful sounding! As a guitar & bass player + drummer...I couldn't imagine playing a fretless guitar/bass. Especially when two-hand tapping. Well done, as usual 🤘🏻
What a great idea! Loved it. 🔥
Superb taste, well done Charles
There are few things in the world as beautiful as Charles Berthoud playing bass. I really mean that. I almost tear up ever time.
I enjoyed every second of this video.
Amazing.
Thank you!
Sent shivers down my spine as always! Love your music.
Love this song, your rendition is awesome.
Love the Wooten at the end too. 🤟🤟
I need a full version of this
Absolutely fantastic Charles! This brings a whole new outlook to this song, while staying true to it
The harmonics on this one are insane. What a performance!
Absolutely insane.. hats off to you brother.. showing this to my 8yr old son whom I’m teaching bass too.. keep up the great work.
Well done man. Those harmonics are so on point
Beautiful!!!❤ I have tears in my eyes ❤
Absolutely phenomenal, what a sound
Spectacular as always
that was awesome my dude. almost brought a tear to my eye.
This is an entire vibe. Love it even more on the bass.
You left me speechless... god bless you!
I love this. The "glissandos" sound so great on the fretless.
Sounds beautiful, and so wonderfully played, too!
Beautiful job. I'd love to see a video of you teaching this to yourself and figuring out how to tackle each section.
This is amazing dude, seriously enjoyed this
Extraordinarily talented musician. You are one of a kind.
CB, THAT WAS FANTASTIC!!!!
Charles, this is awesome!! You are an amazing musician!
Absolutely Beautiful... Well played!
Absolutely mesmerizing. Thank you
One of the most beautiful songs of all time, brought to a whole new level
Beautifully performed!
