At the time Hero At Large came out in the theaters in 1980, I was 11 years old and being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional household. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV and went to the movies as a way of providing myself with escape and comfort from my misery.
Back then I was going to the movies with my then best friend (same age as me). We were a couple of fanatics about the movies. We talked, read, ate, drank, and slept the movies. And we went to the movies together once a week, every week for a lot of years from the 1970s-1980s. We saw literally hundreds upon hundreds of movies together over the years.
We tried to see every new movie that came out regardless of plot, genre (he loved horror films, I preferred comedy), critics reviews, who was starring in it, etc. So there was no particular reason we went to see Hero At Large. It just happened to be a new movie that was just released. I don't recall my friends reaction to this movie, but I liked it alot. It made me feel really good.
Going to the movies with my best friend in the 1970s-1980s is among my most fondest, happiest memories of my entire life.

This movie has been in my collection since the 80’s seen in the theater at least twice back then ,I hav the movie poster and I was always fascinated w the Captain Avenger doll that was shown in the film and wish they would’ve produced one,so a few yrs back I finally sat down and customized my very own Captain Avenger 8” possible figure w box. Am I fan of this movie I’m 60 yrs now and the ending of this film still gives me goosebumps seeing John Ritter character answering the challenge to save that boy when no one else would

I saw this in the theatre and loved it. I have it on dvd and digital. I even own the novel from when the movie first came out. Here is a fun fact, did you know the guy who wrote the movie Hero at large, his name is A.J. Carothers also wrote the movie the secret of my success with Michael j fox.

I did not realize that it was the same writer for both of those films, and they are both favorites of mine. Thanks for sharing that additional information!

A.J. Carothers was also the co-creator of the early 1970s sitcom NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR.

I love her in this movie. She’s also great in “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger”. Thanks for watching!

Weird coincidence! No more than a month ago I pulled up the trailer on YT , I had also seen this at the theater. I think they ran it on network tv a few times, also. Thanks, keep up the good work, Steve !

Roger Ebert doesn't realize people can actually enjoy a movie that's not an oscar-winner.
We watched this movie on tv, and loved it! Obviously my family loved 3's Company, but we thought Hero at Large was a great role for J.Ritter.

I remember Ebert's tepid review, but even before I thought it would have been a better Made-for-TV movie. Never have seen it, though I'd like to, along with 'They All Laughed' which he made during the same period with Dorothy Stratten.

I’d never heard of “They All Laughed” until just now. Now I’m going to have to track it down.

Ebert was full of himself sometimes. For its time, the movie was fun, especially for John Ritter fans.
