Riding Spider

  • I left Carlsbad, New Mexico after enjoying a great ride at the La Cueva trails. The next leg of my road trip involved driving across Texas almost all the way to Austin, Texas.
Spider Mountain is located about 65 miles northwest of Austin near the town of Burnet. I grabbed a room at the Thunderbird Lodge right at the base of the mountain and spent the morning setting up my e-bike for a big day on the hill.
You see, Spider Mountain is the only bike park in the USA, as of this video’s date, that operates year-round with a lift. There are plenty of other parks that can get you to the top of the mountain on a lift, but this is the only one that can get you there in the Winter time.
This hill has about 350 feet of vertical. That’s not a lot - especially for someone like me who grew up riding in Santa Cruz, the Sierras, and in the Rocky Mountains. But these guys make use of every inch of the elevation they have been given. The mountain’s trails twist and turn over all kinds of terrain and all around the mountain, creating a network of fast, technical, and fun trails for all ages and abilities.
    This place rocks!
