A Place to Relax Between Rides
SpokesmanMTB is a collection of rides, reviews, musings, and memories that I have compiled over the years to document my love of mountain biking and its culture. I rode my first bike in 1976, and my butt never left the saddle. From joy rides during my childhood to teenage escapism to transportation to awesome downhill madness, I grew up with the sport and I feel lucky to be able to share it with the world. I hope you enjoy your stay.

White Ranch
The weekend of October tenth found me leaving Durango. This six hour drive through the La Plata mountains and over Wolf Creek Pass revealed one of the more scenic drives in Colorado, and it was all my neighbor’s fault. This is Patrick. He invited me to attend the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, and who was I to say no?
We donned the traditional Oktoberfest lederhosen and poured beer with the rest of the crew at the Carver Brewing booth. We love Carver - they are my favorite Durango brewery and they never serve up anything less than a fantastic time. When we weren’t pouring, we wandered around the show floor and enjoyed amazing brews from all over the nation, and the world.
It kinda goes on forever!
The array of available beers at this show is staggering. Literally thousands of ales, sours, koelsch beers, lagers, pilsners, porters, pale ales, doppelbocks, ciders, and many others were featured on the show floor. I can’t imagine it’s possible to taste them all.
A sense of celebration persists throughout the show. Themes, costumes, music, and awards illuminate the show and fill the air with the happy results of a year’s worth of hard work and pride. And it isn;t just the show that celebrates all things beer; traveling to local breweries reveals a community of beer lovers who are more than happy to partake in the celebration.
On the drive home, I stopped in the beautiful city of Golden to ride a local trail system.

Bentonville was amazing! We rode some killer trails there and spent some time with great people. But it was time to move on to our next stop. We traveled along the highway and entered the rocky hills that Taos and Angelfire call home. It was a beautiful drive and a great end to a long day in the 4Runner. We settled in at the rented condo, enjoyed a beer, and prepared to ride the next day. Unfor...

Our last day in Bentonville. We rode Coler Preserve the day before and loved the challenging trails and jumps. It was a great day! After driving around a bit to see how the town was recovering from this year’s tornado, we drove to Slaughterpen and met up with Scott, from Gnarkansas. I met him at the Bike Fest in May and he rode with us all morning, acting as a bit of a guide and showing us arou...

Riding in Brevard, North Carolina was a lot of fun, but the clock was ticking and we had to get to our next stop. We loaded up the bikes and headed out for Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was a 4 ½ hour drive from Roanoke, Virginia to Brevard, North Carolina. Arriving a few weeks ahead of the hurricane devastation, the weather was humid, but almost perfect for riding. We hit up the Hub, visited a few shops, and drank a few pints. Patrick and I were on the road again. This time, we were in Roanoke, Virginia to check out the trails at Carvin’s Cove. Our only real problem was how wet it was. It had been raining pretty hard for the last 24 hours or so, and it wasn’t getting any cooler. The Carvin’s Cove Reservoir was dammed in the 1930s as a local water supply and stands today as Virginia’s largest conservation easement. It...

That looks super fun! Reminds me of Buena Vista trails. The bike alternates for stairs are genius 😊
@@beyond-x the climb reminded me that I'm not getting any younger. But the downhill were a freaking blast! I'd love to get to know them better so that I could ride them fast.

@ yes!!!!!!!!
What a great day! Thanks for coming out to ride with me!
Everything about these trips is a wonderful experience - especially being able to ride with friends!
Oh man you earned a Pliny that day brother!!
Riding is an excuse to drink beer (and a million other things...)
Is it illegal to hike there unless you bring a dog?

Nice! Didn’t know about this one. Thanks for sharing.
Ah bringing back memories! That place is just FUN!
Half the trees are gone!!
I stumbled across this vid as I just bought a new trek fuel ex 9.8 and I'm really trying to decide if I like the integrated bar/stem that came on it. It's hard to go from 2018 to 2024 geometry. Lots of muscle memory there. Just wanted to complement you on the quality of the content that you produce. It's hard for me to believe your not in at least the 5 figure amount of subs dude.
Thanks very much! I love making the videos, but I guess I don't make the kind of content that UA-cam "loves" to share. That's OK, it's still a blast to get out and ride and to share it with others!
@@SpokesmanMTB I guess that my channel is in the same boat as yours! When I make a video that I feel really good about, I'll end up with less than a 1000 impressions every time!
If you ever go back to Spearfish, ride the Tinton Trail. It’s 40+ miles with some stunning views. That’s Dakota Five 0 course. HLMP is in my backyard. Awesome training ground. Lost Cabin brewery is right across Omaha St next to Black Hills Bikes.
@@rosswunderlich5299 I definitely want to return. That entire area has more to offer than I had realized!
Love that area. Hopefully they recover quickly.
Yea Maryland!
Hahaha I LOVE the rain slider! 😂
Born and raised in Maryland and that was awesome to see trails at my home. I've never ridden there so thanks for this vid!
not bad, thanks for the video. ill check this out
Wheres the trail?! HAHA! Not bad for being in a huge city!
I tell ya... it was a surprise! I wish they have been maintained and cleared, they could have rolled a lot faster!
Too bad the trails aren't better maintained. It looks like it would be pretty cool if they were more rideable.
@@_drawkward_ honestly, it really was a pretty cool place to ride, even if it was a little bit small. And yes, if the trails were better maintained then they would be a whole lot more fun. It was a pretty gross place to ride a bike.
@@SpokesmanMTB it's still cool to see trails and forest in Manhattan. Hope you and the "package" have fun.

@@TheActiveLife20 I know, right??!!
What a fun and playful looking trail system! So much fun to watch! Youre killin it brother!
Such an isolated part of the country! America is BIG!!!
Awesome ride and video. My kind of Mtb trails where you keep both wheels on the ground. We have several trails like this in South Georgia. Are you using Industry Nine hubs? If so how do you like them?
@garyharmon5386 the i9 hubs are smooth and engage well. Still not sure if they are worth the cost, but they really are very high-quality. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for tuning in!
When do you anticipate being in the Brevard NC area?
@@walkerswild already come and gone. I'm back home in Colorado. (sorry!!)
@@SpokesmanMTB Gotcha- so that video is still to come?
@@walkerswild yes, in a few more weeks. I'm not making videos about a few of the places I stopped because the rides were not good enough to document. For instance, my ride in State College Pennsylvania was very very short and filled with rain. Things should pick up a little bit in a week. after that, I'm going to be refocusing my efforts on quality and watchability. Stay tuned!
Good call not doing the Emma Carlin side. The other side is brutal... Every steep climb results in a straight downhill instead of making good use of the elevation lol JT's comment on classic and raw is very apt
Super jealous! One of these days...
I'll go with you!
The ride was great, I'm still impressed by your performance at Kettle, but the whole weekend was such a great time. Stoked we got to hang out and you got to meet most of my crew!

@@TheMediocreMountainBiker you are going to love it! The drive there is kind of long, but it's so beautiful! Such amazing country! Remember to make a reservation at a restaurant earlier rather than later.
Great video Steve! What month were you there?
@@tylermarshall3251 July 2024
Looks like the bottom of Overflow was closed (past the big drop) when you were there. I think it's open again, so next time you'll have to hit it. It's a double black but most of it is rollable. Hit Danimal from the very top too (off of Raptor Ridge). The top is super fun, but there is one sport that leads you into a pretty techy drop (the ride around is hard to see at trail speed). Also didn't see you ride the Red Trail (a must ride in Copper Harbor). And East Bluff is amazing (just drive out there and lap it). Also, also riding out to the point via the Keewenaw Point trail is better than the drive. 25+ miles round trip from town, but it's a pretty easy 25 miles (especially if you're from Colorado and used to altitude). Beers at night at the Brickside Brewery is a must. They have root beer if you don't drink booze. Great place to meet fellow riders after a long day. ...and I hope you hit up Marquette when you were up there. I like it better than Copper Harbor.
Copper Harbor was a real treat! I hit most of what you mentioned, with the exception of Flying Squirrel and most of Overflow. the point is gorgeous! I was pressed for time, so we drove the 4Runner. Worth the trip!
I'm still waiting for people to find this amazing channel, keep it up!
The East Bluff is definitely worth going to. Flo'Rion is one of my favorite blue trails.
I'm wishing I took the time to ride East Bluff.
Again, great video! Humidity...sums up my life! HA!
@@MTBQandA I honestly don't know how you do it.
Just beautiful terrain! And look out for the chunk on you left...and right...and in front...and everywhere! HA!
@@MTBQandA yeah, every trail there seemed to be one notch "more difficult" than it would be anywhere else. A blue in this system would be a green anywhere else.
Awesome video! Spearfish has a great trail called Tinton and they have a race every labor day weekend called the Dakota 50. UA-cam has some videos about it.👍
That Minnesota chunk is real! Glad you got to check that place out. It’s pretty fun and challenging. Nice riding. Can’t wait to see what you think about Copper Harbor. That place is beautiful.
Chunky! Love places that make the most of a small area.
